MEN'S SINGLES
Hsieh Yu-Hsin [4] vs Tommy Sugiarto [5] -- the real match for Tommy Sugiarto, after 2 warm-up matches. Hsieh has a slight edge, esp considering that he has beaten Andre a few weeks ago. It will be a major achievement if Tommy is to win the title this week.

MEN'S DOUBLES
Fernando Kurniawan/Lingga Lie [1] vs John Gordon/Daniel Shirley -- a major test for Edo/Lingga, facing the veteran NZL pair. I hope they can rely on their speed and power game to beat the home pair.

Chew Jian Dee/Brent Miller vs Wifqi Windarto/Afiat Yuris Wirawan [2] -- I think the home pair shouldn't pose a problem for Wifqi/Afiat.

I will be very dissapointed if these INA MD cannot at least reach the semifinals... :(
As for Tommy, mmm... a bit difficult... maybe a 40% chance of winning... :p

Don't worry, Wifqi/Afiat won't let you down :D Edo/Lingga should also win their matches....but they are not that convincing today (esp second set).

I would agree on Tommy.

Zhou Mi looked like she didn't even have a warm-up today... just winning the first game 21-17 and she looked like she didn't want to move throughout this game. However, she picked it up and showed her class in the second game though winning effortlessly 21-5.

I'll try and take some pictures in the next 2 days.

Tommy started off really well in his match against Hsieh, out manoeuvering his opponent with some lovely touches, especially on defence. But his inexperience and lack of stamina showed in the next game where Hsieh took control of the net and attaching more and more since Tommy's game became a lot more predictable. By the 3rd game, Tommy looked spent and Hsieh was just thundering down his big smashes any chance he got.

Quite a lot of long good rallies in the first 2 games though, more so than in any other matches I have seen so far in this tournament.

As expected, Tommy failed yet again in the match that matters. I just don't get it..it has been 2 years since he's in Pelatnas and he still has stamina problems when the match lasted in 3-sets?? I watched him losing to a Malaysian junior in the Singapore Satellite exactly for the very same reason....he basically looked spent in the last set

After 2 easy matches, Wifqi Windarto/Afiat Yuris Wirawan will face a stern test against the TPE pair of Chen Hung-Ling/Lin Yu-Lang. In terms of experience, Wifqi/Afiat definitely are inferior to their opponents.

As for Fernando Kurniawan/Lingga Lie, they clear their first hurdle in the veteran NZL pair, up next will be the MAS uncle-pair of Cheah Soon Kit/Ong Beng Tiong. I think the INA pair will need to impose their authority right from the very start.

Can we have an all-INA Final on Saturday? Very unlikely (esp for Wifqi/Afiat), but, let's just hope it turns out like that.

If the Kiwis can steal one set from them and the fact that they were forced to deuce twice yesterday, I think Edo/Lingga can beat the veteran MAS pair.

CSK/ OBT used to be Malaysia most lethal weapon in the late 80s...
OBT is an all round player, he can play singles too...
CSK is one of the most talented doubles player for Malaysia
he used to pair with Soo Beng Kiang and their combination
clinch the winning point for Malaysia in the 1992 Thomas Cup
final against Rexy Mainaky and Rick Subagja...
after that he moved to partnering Yap Kim Hock and won the 2000
Olympic Games silver medal loosing to Rexy/ Ricky...

both players add up the age is over 80 years old
if the INA pair cant win...then it will
be the biggest upset in NZ Open..
if MAS pair can drag to 3 sets, is
consider big achievement for them...

LOL, LOL, grand-uncles, LOL.

CSK = 40 this year, OBT as I recall is older (there's no DOB of Ong in Wikipedia), so 40++ y.o. coaches playing, :D:D:D.

And yes, CSK/Yap KH won the OG silver in 1996. They lost to Rexy/Ricky.

We shall see...anyway, Wifqi/Afiat are still pretty young, so, a long road for them before they can be contender for INA top MD pairs, with so many pairs ahead of them in the pecking order (including Edo/Lingga) ;) I won't worry much abt Wifqi/Afiat's future.....

Edo/Lingga will need to prove themselves by winning their first GP title and if they can achieve that in Auckland this week, they should try to achieve even better results next year, with more participation in the GP Golds and a couple of SS events (Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore).

Some players threw their racquets..

1) John Moody had the chance to continually attack Sairul Ayob.. then he tried killing by the net, and the shuttle went out.. so he threw his racquet up which nearly hit the ceiling.. it landed on the floor and suprisingly, it didn't break. Both Moody and Ayob had a laugh and a smile, then continued with their game.

2)CSK broke the strings on his racquet during the game.. he threw the racquet to Sairul Ayob who was sitting behind the court, and Ayob threw back a newly strung racquet and the uncles continued to play, winning the rally..

Mudukasan suprised the audience when she deceived Zhou Mi with a very tight cross-court net drop. On the next rally, Zhou Mi counter attacked using the very same move with a smile on her face.. it shows how much confidence she has, as the world #2 player.
