I came across this article on badders.com

http://www.badders.com/news.fmi?seshid=&nid=99

It's a copy of the Star paper (Malaysian paper) on the thinking of the Asia Badminton Confederation (ABC) on some changes that they are looking at.

I am interested in the change in court size. Make it bigger so that you could have 3 players per side ??? :D

interesting.

IMHO, there are things that cannot be changed. the size of the court and the height of the net is one of them. there are tens of thousands of court installed all over the world. it would create chaos and confusion if they decided to change that. as a result, the speed of the birdie cannot be changed without the court changing.

the grand-slam series proposal and the league series sounds good. the league series seems tougher as the players are so geographically divserse.

how's the grand-slam different from the current system?

Tennis is a good model to follow as there are similarities between that and badminton, namely individual competitors who are geographically spreadout.

Maybe we need not change the scoring format but have a player serve from the baseline. Maybe we can bring back the S-service used by the Sidek brothers which was banned by the IBF.

can someone explain what is " s-service" ?

Thanks

I doubt that they will actually change the dimensions of the court but the other thing about serving from the baseline (like tennis) so if that happen, you should be able to chuck the shuttle up in the air and do a smash serve :D

As for SS query, if you do a search for S-serve or Sidek or spinning serve.

I was brought up believing that the Sidek brothers (who played in the 80's) was the first to use the serve (which has since been deemed illegal because it was damm difficult to return the serve). The rules now states that the racquet has to contact the shuttle (on a serve) cork first. In the S-serve, the racquet contact the feathers first.

My coach used to play with the Sidek brothers and he used to use the S-serve until it was banned. I had him do it the other day. It is an amazing serve. He also has a variation on that where he would struck the cork first and still have the same swerve! So technically that would be legal.
