which is your priority? badminton or course of study? :p
What if the college that has badminton doesn't have the course that you want to major in? :D

If you cannot find a college with badminton, you can still play at the near by community center or fitness center.

Both Harvard and MIT have very active badminton clubs. May be you should consider the East coast.

You might want to check into the following:

University of California, Davis
UC Berkeley
Stanford
Cal State University, Fresno
CSU Chico
San Jose State University

These schools are in Northern California. Some of them are members of the Northern California Intercollegiate Badminton League (NCIBL).

I have no personal experience with these schools or their programs. Some of our Bay Area members may be able to give you first-hand information.

yes. in East coast, Harvard, MIT, Penn, UMD are the more popular places.

in SF area, Berkeley and Stanford have the best badminton teams.

good luck. and don't go to Brown or CMU. you will not find badminton in those places.

Basically, any college with a high number of students from the orient will most likely have badminton clubs. In addition, any large city with a high oriental population will also be likely to have clubs or groups of players meeting regularly. Don't choose a college by the quality of their badminton courts though!

The SF area school with the strongest players is San Jose State University,
but their badminton club is not very well-organized in terms of training.
They are trying to develop a badminton centre though, so that might
change soon. Stanford and UC Berkeley both have clubs with well-organized
training sessions and coaches. If you are just interested in playing,
most colleges in the SF area have badminton classes. Foothill College,
De Anza College, Meritt College, Skyline College, California State University at Hayward and Univesity of San Francisco are a few examples of these type
of schools with clubs where there are no organized training sessions but lots of playing.

First of all thousand thanks for all the information.

what I actually want is of course study :)
However, I would also like to play badminton, play in tournaments if possible.
So, I am looking for some community colleges with a good badminton team and training too.
I don't intend to go straight to University, I will spend the first two-years at the college.

The only junior college I know of in that area that has a team is Solano Community College. I believe they are part of the NCIBL.

You were born too late. In the 70s, virtually every community college had a team. We played other schools in a league and had a huge tournament at the end of the season. I'm not sure what ended those programs--lack of funds, maybe.

Badminton competition has been reinstated at some CCs, but only for ladies.:(

The Californian is correct; some community colleges in the area have teams, but these teams are primarily for women.

De Anza College (in Cupertino, south SF bay area) has a "team practice" class in the Winter & Spring quarters that is open to both males & females. This class usually ends up being about 70% males even tho' it's a women's team. Training is offered in this class, but the focus of the training is directed more toward the female team members during the Spring quarter (since most of their league season takes place during this time). Altho' the male members of the class do not play intercollegiate league matches, they can play 4 (optional) tournaments. I'm not sure, but they may be sponsered by the De Anza in these tournaments. The "active" coach for the past 2 seasons has been a former international player, Rose Lei, who was a member of the Chinese national team (primarily during the 70s?). I believe that she will return next Winter to coach again.

De Anza also offers several other badminton classes year round including a competitive "Tournament Badminton" class. However, most of these classes focus on play & offer only minimal training.

Skyline College in San Bruno (east bay area) has a VERY strong women's team. Mission College in Santa Clara (south bay area) has some excellent coaching. I'm not at all sure what is available closer to & in SF itself.

I don't know if any of these other teams encourage or allow males to practice with the women's team. However, you might try what I did. I offered my services to Rose Lei at De Anza to assist in coaching & drilling with the members of the team. In addition to training the girls, I also benefitted by drilling & learning some badminton techniques from a former world class player.

There are also a number of tournaments available outside of the collegiate arena in the SF bay area as well as futher up north in the Sacramento & Davis area. There are some badminton camps (for both competitive & recreational players) usually during the summer months. Rose Lei runs some of these. San Jose State Univeristy currently has a 3 week camp that some high level coaching, including Ling-Wei Li, former world women champion (dominant during the 80s) and former head coach of the women's singles Chinese national team (during much of the 90s).

You might also try to contact Dick Ng thru the South San Francisco Badminton Club (Telephone: (650) 742-2209, (650) 827-9353). He was a top singles & doubles player in the U.S. for quite a few years, coached at Stanford University for 2 years, named coach of the year by the US Olympic committee.

He currently is involved heavily with junior development in the SF bay area. I believe that he currently teaches/trains groups, either thru So. SF Badm Club or thru Parks & Recreation (So. SF?). Dont know if he trains all ages or only juniors at this time. You can check out some training vids of his at the SportsID.com web site.

Greg, I sent you a private message on this thread. Just in case you
don't notice it. Please let me know if you don't receive it.

I'm looking for excuses to try out new features on this site ;)

Greg,

I think I sent it last night. If you go to the bottom of this (current) web page,
you'd see "Jump" selection. Choose "Private message" in the pull-down menu.
This would bring you to your private mail box.

The system tells me it has delivered you the message. Also, your hotmail account seem to have a problem.

Hey Yudhi...I am an Indonesian studying at the US right now...and I would suggest that you try to attend one of the many community colleges in southern california...
that is the LA area....mt. san antonio college, pasadena city college and santa monica college are all good community colleges....

the great thing about staying in LA is that you will be able to play at san gabriel valley badminton club...that club open 24 hours a day provided you have a membership card...because you need to scan your card to the reader to keep the lights on....you can come everyday and you will find people to play with....from the really beginner players to the more advanced players...and there are alot of Indonesians like me playing there too....some are really advanced like Trisna Gunadi...he plays for the US...so you will feel more homely in a sense...and the great thing is...you will be able to mingle with them...

you can also go to the orange county badminton club..which is also in LA...but they are more expensive...and they close at 10 at night..which sucks...but all the national players train there..including the young ones...

personally, i think there is no use to play in college...as most the colleges here don't really have a solid program for badminton....

i would say the place is LA...if you want to study and play badminton at the same time...trust me...hope this helps...
