How about changing the name of the sport we know as badminton to change its weak image in some countries & increase its mass appeal worldwide? I'm sure that this idea has been entertained by the IBF, USAB or other badminton governing bodies in the past.
What are your suggestions for a new name? Let me start off with a few...
Smash
Shuttle Smash
Shuttle Kung Fu
Shuttle Tai-Chi
Shuttle Chi
Shuttle Tao
Shuttle Chess
Kinetic Chess
Bad-ass-minton (pardon my French)
Piano-Forte (a music reference to the shuttle speed's wide dynamic range)
Forte-Piano
Kill (or be killed)
Deception
Deceive & Destroy
Battledore
Battledore & Shuttlecock
Shuttlecock & Battledore
Poona

How about ..... Boundaryhunt

Badminton??? yuck, it sounds like a boring country house somewhere in England.
BoundaryHunt? hmmm, it has potential... how about "Pushing the Envelope" or "Perimeter Wars"?

Yes I agree with Matt and |r|s.
Whatever for change the name of a sport?!?!
If it changes now, what makes you think that it won't change again and again once pple "apparently" seem to get bored with the new name??
Concentrate on playing better badminton rather than thinking of changing the name which will have no effect whatsoever on you!! (No offence intended)

Well it looks like the Singapore crowd doesn't want to break with tradition. I think that you guys are missing the point of this exercise, however. A name change could have a very profound, positive effect in many countries on the sport as a whole .
Apparently, badminton does not suffer a lack of interest or a negative image in England or Singapore. In Denmark, England, China, Korea, India, & most of SE Asia, badminton flourishes; In the Americas, Africa, & much of Europe it does not.
Consider the kiwi fruit. I don't recall what its old name was in the U.S. but I believe that it was something rather boring, like breadfruit. Some 20 yrs ago or so, some woman in Los Angeles gave it the name Kiwi fruit and marketed it very successfully. this woman is now a multi-millionaire and the fruit has shed its former negative image & has become fairly popular in the States.
Badminton need to change with the times. If it hadnt done so in the past, we would still be calling it either Poona or Battledore & Shuttlecock. Badminton is hardly a sacred name, it is merely the name of some coutry estate in England. This game of ours had its origins in India & was spread across the world by the British Empire. It is time again to make it a worldwide sport in those countries where it does not enjoy the stature that it has in Singapore & England.
With that, I'm gonna suggest more name possibilities. Even if you dont want to see the name of the sport change, why not get into the spirit of exercise anyway?
How about:
Velocity
Velocities
Mach 5
Warp 10
Projectile
Hyper Tennis
Ultimate Racquets
Xtreme Rackets
Shuttle Xtreme

Hi,
Its not the name that is crap, it is the media coverage and attention. There is also another badminton, horseriding. You say the name is boring yet horseriding got THOUSANDS of people watching, so obviously, its not the name, or they would have gave this sport the cold shoulder.
It just needs media attention, and to be introduced elsewhere so people realise it, into schools etc.

r u trying to spoil my fun, Matt? Ok, "Badminton" as a name is not all that boring or uninteresting; but the sport really needs a boost or facelift here in the States & other parts of the globe. How do propose we get that media attention here? (Actually you should probably start another thread if you have any ideas on that subject). We get virtually ZERO media coverage here. We need exposure here. Perhaps a name & format change would be 2 ways to facilitate that goal.
However as I said above, other ways to garner media attention is another thread.
btw, i dont that that horseriding enjoys the same status in the States & some other parts of the world that it does in England. Hey, lets call it "Xtreme Equestrianism"!

Please, no Extreme. I either get shivers down my spine or laugh out loud whenever I see a new trend with the word Xtreme attached to it.
Everytime I see the word Extreme, or Xtreme, I think FAD.

Hi,
As i said its not the name that needs changing to get more publicity. Its the fact it has to be introduced in more areas, not only that, in a wider region too. Its not the name that people turn the shoulder to, it is the fact they dont have the understandin about badminton, the agility, the fact it can be concidered an art. We need to do a bit more to get badminton noticed, but at the end of the day its the lack of advertisements that gives badminton the downfall. You think, if badminton was on 4 times a week, badminton players would ROCKET because they would want to be like 'the one on TV''
So, change the name of badminton? Nah

JChen99- nice try again, but that one sounds like bestiality or cruelty to animals.
Matt- OK, you make some valid points & your points have been noted, but how about letting the rest of us have some fun with this name-a-sport thing. I can see where a Brit would tenaciously cling to the sacred name of badminton (for one, it sounds very British). It might seem sacreligious to some to suggest a name change, or at least a faux pas of the highest magnitude. But this idea did not start with me. It has actually been entertained by some badminton governing bodies. Whether the name changes or not, I'm just trying to have a bit of fun here & get some creative juices flowing.
Phil- granted, "Xtreme" is pretty trendy right now; but perhaps badminton needs to be perceived as an extreme sport. i can see that "Xtreme" will seem a bit dated in a decade or 2. just throwin' out some ideas to see what we can come up with...
so let's see those creative juices flow...

And whats this meant to mean? If your classing me as the upper-class snob then think again. I'm meerly saying a view, as this is a BADMINTON FORUM, or does everythin you say go? Have your fun, but i'm rasing some facts, sorry if us 'Brits' annoy you. Cling? Errrmmm.....no. I dont care if they change the name, i dont flippin cherish badminton like my own, but IBF have made a few harsh changes as it is, let alone change the name to one of your top class names like Piano-Forte.

You guys think too hard....! All your names are too long... and let's face it.. sucks compared to my idea....
BEHOLD... THE NEW NAME FOR WHAT WAS ONCE CALLED BADMINTON.
SHUTTLING!!!!
You use it like how you would use the word swim.
"I am going to go shuttle today"
"I like shuttling"
"My fave sport is shuttling"
BTW IF IBF DECIDES TO RENAME THE SPORT AND CALL IT "SHUTTLING" I WANT CREDIT FOR IT!

Hi,
What about changing badminton to 'Yonex'. I say this for many reasons.
1) They are dominant wise with equipment and sponsorship
2) They donate money into badminton
3) Without them, badminton wouldnt be where it is today.
So i feel it would be nice to name it after them.

Is badminton known by a different name in non-English speaking countries, or is it one of those words that transcends languages?

hey, why is all the name variations only using the the first part of the word shuttlecock? i suggest we start using only the second part....
so we could replace all the previous suggestions whereever the word 'shuttle' is used with the second part:
"I will be busy c***ing today'
"that was a nice smash you did on that c***"
"oh great, you just broke another c***"
"do you play with plastic c***'s?"
yeah, kwun is gonna shut me down for this one.... :D
Badrad: Brilliant! Why didn't I think of that! That would make it such a macho game!

Well, in Indonesia it's called "bulutangkis" which literally means
"feather defence/parry". The Chinese refer to it
as something that translates to "feather ball".
My little girl asked me why is it called "Bad"minton not "Good"minton.

I thought that to encourage longevity in one's ***k it shuld be stored somewhere cold. That prolongs it's rigidity when it is time to put it to use.
LOL.. come on guys. This is a civilized board.. not a play house... lol :). Yes, in Chinese(mandarin), the name of badminton actually has relevance to an aspect of the game. It is called "y¨¹ ma¨® qi¨²" or "bird feather game", referring to the material that the shuttle is made of.
Luckily, Kwun doesn't have internet access or else you guys woulda been toast!! Specially u Badrad..... :D

I see from the postings that it is only the guys who got into the spirit of "c***ing" around. :D
Ping pong is also known as table tennis because that is the best description in describing the sport to someone who is familiar with tennis. I am not suggesting that we do that but how about Xtreme tennis :D or Feather Tennis
