Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen in Gao Ling/Wei Yili

So they retire from the China national team just so that they can compete independently? That gives a new meaning to retirement.

Unorthodox? Yes

New? Hardly, see Chen Hong, LWW/CTF, Wang Chen, Zhou Mi et al.

Zhang Jiewen / Yang Wei

Look at Prof Players section. CTF/LWW retired from the national team end of Oct 2008, now sign under Victor for another 2 years, just like CCM/CCE. Wong Choong Hann retired too, to go independent.

Everyone is responsible for their own funds [for now]. But there is a possibility that PBSI might just be organized [just in time] to fund them... ;)

Apparently, CTF's girlfriend will officially retire from competitive playing sometime next year, so he cant get married till then. ;)

The news of their retirement/quitting national team + their signing up with Victor was discussed here :

I was just informed that PBSI will most likely finance the INA players [who are going to be in the national team] by January... By that, I mean Sony, Simon, Lily-Nova, Kido-Hendra etc. Probably not Andre and Alamsyah... :p

Anytime there's a full turnout by INA, it's gonna be a superb tournament! INA's the real badminton giant. It hasn't been able to flex its muscle because building muscle requires money. That's the key difference between CHN and INA.CHN has unlimited money while INA's still trying to find limited money.
I love INA.It's the team with the passion for badminton.
Lucky MO09.

I wonder if the Badminton Masters Cup in Kota Kinabalu is still on - heard China withdrew their team. The tournament can still be held, but I think it would be less exciting if some top seeds are not playing.

TH would not miss this SSF..
he try hard in the last SS (especially europe SS) to get him qualified to play in SSF..
so there was no point in withdrawing (unless he want to miss quite the big prize money) i think his injury is not that serious..he can endure it.

i'm sorry if my post is kinda out of topic..

Taufik’s gamble pays off as he reaches semi-finals

KOTA KINABALU (DEC 19 2008): Indonesian ace Taufik Hidayat took a big risk as he defied doctor’s order, to play in the US$500,000 Yonex-Sunrise BWF World Super Series Masters Finals.
Taufik revealed that he was strongly told by the doctor “to stay away from the Super Series” for fear of aggravating his back injury which played up a week before the tournament.
“I did not train for one week. But when the BWF and my sponsors made an appeal, I decided to come after I finished a rigorous work out without feeling any ill effects,” said Taufik after his 21-8, 2-17 win over England’s Andrew Smith in a Group B men’s singles match at the Likas Sports Complex today.

http://www.worldsuperseriesmasters.com/news_26.htm
The win assured Taufik a place in the semi-finals and he will meet world number one and top seed Datuk Lee Chong Wei for a place in the final.
“It’s scary as I am taking a big risk. Should anything happen, I am solely responsible … I won’t blame anyone if my injury gets worse.
“My fingers are crossed that nothing untoward happens here. All my three matches have gone to the distance but I am not complaining.”
Taufik, a former Olympic and world champion, has set his sights on winning the prestigious All England title which has yet to win.
Asked if he will play in the Malaysian Open next month, Taufik replied: “Of course I will be there playing in the Malaysian Open. I still have two weeks to recover and work on my shortcomings.”
