this website says

http://badminton.hypermart.net/badminton.html

The shuttle must not touch the net on the way over. If the shuttle lands within the boundaries of the court, the call is a 'let' and the shuttle must be served again.

wtf?

didnt' they change that rule years ago?

did any of you read the scoring rules at that website? the author has been playing since he was 8? what was he playing - table tennis?

Men's singles, and men's, women's and mixed doubles: 1 game = 21 points, if 19-all option for first player to 19 to set to 5 points (scores go to love-all, first to 5). If 20-all option to set to 3. New Rule: 3 sets = 14 points each, if 14-all option to play to 17. Setting is no longer possible at 13 points all!

Women's singles: 1 game = 15 points, if 13-all option for first player to 13 to set to 5 points (scores go to love-all, first to 5). If 14-all option to set to 3. New Rule: 3 sets = 11 points each, if 10-all option to play to 13. Setting no longer possible at 9 all!

and if he was cut and paste - man, what sport was he cutting from? 3 sets - 14 points each?

Badrad,

The author mentions that the scoring was changed to our current scoring.

I think when the author says sets, he means games.

phil: regardless if he calls it set or games, the score is not to 14... and he does state this is a new rule...

also, if he is keeping up with current and new rules - mixed and womens doubles are to 11...

The scoring rules listed by Jonathan on the site are very old. Used to play to 21 points a long long time ago. But the site was listed as being updated in 2000 so he hasn't been keeping up to date and probably got the scoring rules from some old books.

The net serve also used to be a let but again, that was years and years ago. Sorry, my recollection gets pretty blurry once the time line goes past 10 years ago.

LOL. the author probably grabbed an old badminton book and copied the rules from there. :)

it is interesting to know how the "old" system works though.

----------------------

i thought the rules were made in england in like 1902 or some shiit..and that since then the rules have been basically the same

.. thats one of the reasons i was soo pissed about the 5x7 scoring

how can u change a sports scoring after like a hundred years.. .wtf is wrong w/these people

if they want more commercial breaks.. have the players change sides after 7 points played or won.. whatever

Hmm, I must have missed that he said games are to 14.

Although the rules written on the site are rather old as it seems, I still found the site very informative.

and one fine day in the not so distant future we will be telling our grandchildren how for a time there games were played to fifteen, and that confusion rained down when at 13 the first there got to choose 5, but not doing so first at 14 got to choose 3.... hahahah - OKAY THAT'S IT DAD - STOP SCARING THE KIDS!:D

Thanks everyone for your input

The site had not been updated for a *very* long time. Unfortunately it's not something I have time to maintain. It's simply there as an informative resource.

Anyway, I've since updated the site, check it out (http://badminton.hypermart.net/Beginner.html#L1Scoring) see what you think.

The bit about '3 games to 14' was a typo - apologies to anyone who was confused.
But personally, I think if the shuttle hits the net on service, it should be a let :p
