Personally i've aspired to be an International player. I'm not going to give up. Although i am 20 years of age. As long as i have the heart and as long as i am given the oppurtunity i will practice and play my heart out. Never give up on your dreams.

Aim for the moon if you miss you'll be among the stars.

Cheers,
Nick

If you do aspire to be a very good player, it is all the more important that you get the right training from a coach at an early stage.

There are many players in US, UK, Australia who do not have access to facilities that are available in S'pore (coaches, classes, venues). These people always wish they could have started the game at an earlier stage with the right direction.

True! It is like learning Grammer in english. Never rule out the Idea of a coach. It is easier to mould a younger person than an Old guy. When i mean a coach i am talking abt a certified decent one or someone with decent abilities and Knowledge of teh game.

SO if u are young 10-12 yrs and want to start go see a coach now and shift coaches if u believe u are outgrowing ur coach as well...

Best of luck. Prac makes perfection. Work hard and U will get it. The game is all abt Movement at the Initial stages. It will take a lot of time to get good movement..

Yes, I agree that we need to start at very young age to be able to be a GOOD player.. guess those international palyers starts from very young.. around 7-8 years old... Parents' support is needed too..

Sigh.

If only I had started even two years earlier than I did. I started when I was 15, I am now 16. I have, in my mind rapidly improved, beating people in tournaments that have played years longer than I have. But no matter how well I do, I know in the back of my mind that it's too late to excel as a junior. I may do well in, say, ten years in tournaments, but not now as a junior. The good kids just have more experience and real coaching.

I have to move up to the next age category this coming season, so it will be very hard to prove my worth even in provincial competition. The fact that there is no professional coaching in my area does not help.

Grammer heheheheheh, I beleive its grammar. Anyway..

I would love to become better at badminton and compete with the best. Though I just started 2 years ago and I beleive I am at intermediate level I think that if I begin player more ofter (Now playing on a weekly basis and soon twice a week) I can get better with experience.

When i lived in Malaysia i started at the age of 7 but when i moved to Canada i stopped for about 4 years and only picked up competitive badminton when i was 16. Alot of years lost. But my motto is it's never too late. It just depends how determined you are. Badminton is my passion and i'll do whatever i can to do well.

i wonder why your parent do not allow u to play badminton? I guess they have their own reason too? iszit because that u r over addicted that u need to play everyday and neglect your study or iszit because your mother dun like u to go out and always want u to stay at home?

Badminton is also a very low paying pro sport.

Its true... but actually if u have passion for it.. money doesnt really matter... But... sometimes we need to think about it... We need money to live right?? its a fact!!

I would rather have a low paying sport. A passion in life is very hard to find. It's even harder to find a career that you're passionate about. So far i have not had a job i am willing to take up at 4 in the morning however with badminton i'm willing to get up in the morning to train and prepare. It all depends on your perspective.
Good luck guys.

I will disagree with this.
If that's the case, then International Players don't need the ranking system.... but players do rise and fall don't they??

Of course, you can be extremely difficult to beat if you've:

Good Footwork ( Fast and Stable)
Great Stamina
Good Racket Skills
Great Determination
Great Mentality (Mental Toughness)
Consistency (Accuracy)
Good court awareness
Tatical Knowledge and Applying it in game
Not Injury Prone or having the ability to quickly recover skills and prerequisites if took long break due to injury or for any other reason.
Intelligence in terms of :
1: Ability to quickly identify opponent’s strength, weakness, style and be able to modify game accordingly.
2: Ability to identify own mistakes and be able to quickly fix it.
3: Ability to plan and execute a clear effective strategy against opponent.

And it also helps if you've THAT natural talent!

Yup.. I agree with u.. some players just have the natural talent to be ONE!!!

Whatever the talent of an individual, every top player has had a coach to learn the skills be they physical, mental, tactical.

If you look at examples of other sports, it is only those relatively "newly developed" sports which innovation and natural talent have more potential to shine through.

I started playing badminton at 5, I went for training at 7, I stop training cuz of my exams at 10, and I'm gonna start my training again in September. I'm 11. I've enjoyed playing badminton since I first knew how to play. I'm learning to smash now on my own from the back of the court. I've always been too short before this, I hope I can do it. It's still going into the net though.

You can smash from the back od the court? Cool! I'm able to do backhands and picking up the shuttle with my racket. The picking up shuttles was taught by my mum, she was a player once.

One message I got out of all the threads I read on this Forum is that,
if you want to be a top accomplished player, you pretty much need to
start young, have good coaching and practise hard.

At that young age, really the decision probably is made by the parents,
because there'd be some long term consequences/trade-off one need to
consider - e.g. earning a good living, deviating from the traditional route of
going to good school and have good scores etc. Plus the young player
would need emotional and perhaps more importantly financial supports.

Are there any parents here in this forum that have thought about this
topic? What're the views here? As for me, I've a 3+ years old daughter.
I'm thinking of finding her good coach and things. But in my mind, her
priority would still be schooling. Badminton could be her biggest hobby,
but I can't see her picking it up as a life time career.

Even if I'm willing to send her to China for long term training, the space
at that level seems too crowded. Just too difficult to earn a good living.
And then she has to endure lots of phyiscal injuries as part of the journey.

That's why I stopped training, I had exams and I'm still having them. After this exam, I'm going to continue training. Oh man, if I don't get straight A's for this exam I'm sooo dead.

I'm not a mum, a bit of an international player myself now.
I started when I was 6 years old.. ButI didn't had a good coach then .. it was just for fun..
playing other games than badminton too. I started thinking about 'getting better' when
I quit the other sport i was doing, at bout 10 or so. Then I got a better coach and it worked
fine for me starting to train more..

I think you just have to let the child decide first if badminton is what he/she likes best,
and than help him/her finding a good coach and all. I guess otherwise the child will feel
pushed And my experience says that those players stop playing at an early stage..

Jep, I am in the national team..I am doubles and mixed player. I just didn't want you to think I am like a 'star' player, because I am not ( yet) I hope to be one in the future but then some work has to be done! It's just my second year in the national team now and I was very lucky to be selected for the Uber-cup, although I didn't play! But at the moment my goal for the future is to improve my play to that level, that they want me to play in the Uber-cup in 2004! The only problem is that If I want to beome a real star-player ( like Olympic level)I have to train fulltime and therefore quit my studies..And I wouldn't know if I would eventually make ik to that level... but I already talked about that matter I guess..

Hihi... well I am not THAT good. I just was a reserve player there. Normally I just play EBU tournaments and I haven't managed to get a really good result yet. :( But it was really cool to go to Guangzhou and train and be among the great players.. Once I was training there and on the court next to me was Camilla Martin. Another time we were training at the same time as the Malaysian and the Indonesian Thomascup teams..pretty cool hugh?! But when I was there I didn't really realised what was happening to me..

Im sure Eva's just being modest. They don't bring you along as a reserve if you can't fill the shoes of an injured or sick player.

I think getting your parents support is very important to be an acomplished player. You need their backing and support all the way.
I used to be very good player without formal coaching till around 15/16. I had one of the best coaches in Malaysia at that time. Unfortunately had to give up because of studies and my parents wouldn't let me go further with my badminton.

For all you young players out there, I would advise you to train hard and enjoy the game. To succeed internationally, you also have to have the mental strength and the 'killer instinct'.

For kids like Joanne and Eva, I sincerely wish you all the best and hope that you will succeed in the international arena. Never give up.

:D Just recently started playing again after an 8 year lay off. It feeld good to be playing again. Never know, might be playing competitive again soon;) (at my age, i have not lost my speed, agility and power. but stamina is an issue)
