Newby celebrates 100th birthday
Newby Boocock had an extra reason to celebrate over Christmas – he was 100 years old.
The centenarian reached the milestone yesterday.
Newby, a popular High Barnes resident, puts his long life down to an active mind and active body.
Friend and neighbour Margaret Corbett, 66, said: "He joined a badminton team when he was 15 and played until he was 82. He was also a big fan of walking in the Lakes. For 100 years old, he's marvellous."
Newby was born in 1908 and lived with his parents at Primrose Crescent, Fulwell.
He then lived at Belle Vue Crescent, Ashbrooke, until he married Nancy Grey. His wife became ill in the late 50s and died.
Newby worked at Sunderland's Marine Technical College until he was 70 and has been a keen member of Ewesley Road Methodist Church for almost 90 years.
A party was thrown to mark Newby's milestone at Age Concern's day club at St Gabriel's Church, Chester Road, Sunderland.
