View Full Version : Which player(s)/pair(s) to watch in 2009??..
ctjcad 12-30-2008, 01:53 PM (i don't know why i skipped this yr's preview) but with the hectic 2008 BWF calendar year coming to an end just around the corner (filled with the Olympic Games excitement & the SS Masters Finale finally coming to fruition) and another hectic 2009 BWF calendar year coming up in about a week or so (with who-knows-what-surprises-will-show-up), which player(s)/pair(s) do you guys think will be the player(s)/pair(s) to watch next year??..
Will it be someone new for each of the field (MS, WS, MD, WD and XD), or will it be same old story and players??..

ctjcad 12-31-2008, 01:33 PM ..the only ones to watch in 2009?....Okay.
Fidget 12-31-2008, 02:58 PM ctjcad,
Well, who are your picks?:)
I don't know the up and comers....
...but I have a feeling that Chen Jin is going to do better than just be accused of being given LD's scraps. With no Olympics, there will be no talk of coachs fixing matches. With a little more assertiveness he might just be dominant.
It would be nice to see Tien Minh Nguyen and Kevin Cordon do well...( Canucks love folks from underdog countries).
Sadly for my hero Sony Dwi, I have a feeling, after a nice finish to the year, he may slink back into inconsistency.:crying:
Be pleased to learn more from more knowlegable fans.:)
Dreamzz 01-01-2009, 12:08 AM i think saina will make a charge this year, i'll be keenly following her progress.
also morgensen and boe, hopefully they will stay injury free ...
chris-ccc 01-01-2009, 12:51 AM .
Mens Singles
LD and LCW should still be expected to be the best 2.
Womens Singles
Hope that SN could do it for IND.
Mens Doubles
It's the arrival of the MAS's Fuzzy pair, I hope.
Womens Doubles
Could WPT/CEH continue with their momentum?
Mixed Doubles
NW/LN should be able to maintain their top position, I think.
.
djake 01-01-2009, 01:50 AM I totally agree that Saina Nehwal is the one to watch next year. Perhaps she and Marai Kristin will be the ones to challenge the Chinese girls consistently this year. Tine, Zhou Mi , WC , PHY and XHW are no spring chicken and will find it difficult to stay consistent. I expect LL, WYH and WL to lead the Chinese brigade in the World Championship.
LD and LCW will remain dominant. CJ and SDK are two good bets to threaten their dominance. Time for Taufik, Wong CH, Gade and BCL to fade into oblivion. Expect these new dragons to make breakthroughs- Tago, Gong WJ, JP and Hong JH. Too early for Chen Long, Tanongsak and Arif yet, i think.
In MD, Malaysia will have a very bright future if they get it right. With KKK, TBH, Teo Kok Siang, Mak Hee Chun, Ong Jianguo, Guo Weishern ..etc (all under 21 bar KKK). Nobody else in the world has such depth. China will rely on Xu Chen (possibly with Sun Jinjie or He hanbin) whilst Korea has Cho Gun Woo, Shin Baek Cheol and of course the incomparable Lee Yong Dae. Adcock (eng) is an interesting talent and I'm sure he'll be as good as Blair / Robertson / Archer etc. in the near future. Pity he doesn't have an equally good British partner to develop and mature together. Watch out for Boe / Mogensen to break into the top 5.
China will dominate WD as usual. Cheng Shu / Zhao yunlei and Pan Pan / Tian Qing will replace GL/ YW / ZJW / WYL eventually. If Lee KW retire, then I really couldn't see anyone else beating the Chinese this year. Maybe Ha Jung Eun / Irawati / Jauhari / Polii / Singapore pairs can make a breakthrough, but I don't expect top 5 material here.
In MXD, Lee Yong Dae should dominate with Lee HJ. Interesting new top 10talents are Xu Chen / Zhao Yunlei and Fischer / Pedersen (no idea how old the Danes are). KKK and Zheng Bo will do well once they decide which young talent they shall partner.
Oh well, sorry for rambling on. Just my point of view;)

Nahhhhh, that's old news. For MD : it's the new partnerships/youngsters/new batch who are the ones we're watching to see ;):p:p. For Indonesia, Bona/Ahsan is very promising.
MS : none outstanding that can challenge the current seniors as yet, me thinks. It'll be the usual suspects in tourneys.
WS: Saina N, Wang Yi Han, Wang Lin
XD : Marissa/Rijal
WD : Zhao YL/Su Cheng
I'm sure there'll be more new partnerships coming up next year since OG is over.

Thank you for spurring the other more knowledgeable BCers, as i also do not know much about the next baddy up & comers:(...Btw, we still haven't heard from badMania; he usually comes up with the names & projections..
badMania 01-03-2009, 09:09 AM For INA's MD:
I am hoping Wifqi Windarto/Afiat Yuris Wirawan show glimpses of their talent. They are only 19 and will be turning 20 this year and have huge potential in them.
And who says we don't have talents as deep as MAS MD? We still have:
Fernando Kurniawan/Lingga Lie, Rizky Yanu Kresnayadi/Albert Saputra, Adi Chrisna Wijaya/Syahmie Syarif Radhitian, the other few promising but untested Djarum pairs under Coach Sigit Budiarto like Mohd Ulinnuha/Berry Angriawan.
These pairs are typically not WJC winners like MAS or KOR pairs, but, they will only begin to show their true potential after their junior years.

etudiant 01-25-2009, 11:40 AM Fischer Nielsen/Pedersen, Mel/Shendy, Bona/Ahsan, Firda/Saina/Bae YJ, Boe/Mogensen, MS still the old guns.....
badMania 01-26-2009, 04:44 AM Men's Doubles
Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen -- the dark horse for the AE and WC this year for sure; and one pair that every pair wants to avoid in the early rounds.
Bona Septano/Mohd Ahsan -- has risen to all-time high of WR#11. But they still need more consistency and playing hours against the top pairs.
Cho Gun Woo/Yoo Yeon Seong -- WR#17 now and KOR's no 2 pair at the moment.
Fang Chieh-Min/Lee Sheng-Mu -- I have always liked this pair when I first started noticing them in late 2007. They are now WR#20 and have notched a shocking upset over the Olympics and World Champions in the KOR SS.
Women's Doubles
Chien Yu-Chin/Cheng Wen-Hsing -- the TPE pair is back with a vengeance and is now World no 1 after 2 solid tourneys.
Meiliana Jauhari/Shendy Puspa Irawati -- has risen to WR#10.
Cheng Shu/Zhao Yunlei -- they will be CHN's top pair in the near future.
Yao Lei/Shinta Mulia Sari -- Eng Hian's protege is rising up the ranking table almost unnoticed....they are now WR#15. With more match experiences against the top pairs, they should rise at least to top 8.
Mixed Doubles
Fran Kurniawan/Shendy Puspa Irawati -- has risen to WR#11.
Joachim Fischer-Nielsen/Christinna Pedersen -- has risen to WR#6, getting increasingly hard to beat and will be able successor to Thomas Laybourn/Kamilla Rytter-Juhl.
Songphon Anugritayawon/Kunchala Voravichitchaikul -- has risen to WR#10...and should be taking over Sudket Prakamapol/Saralee Thoungthongkam as Thai's no 1 pair soon.
Xu Chen/Zhao Yunlei -- quite possibly, this will be one of CHN's future top XD pair alongside He Hanbin/Yu Yang.
