USA Women's Badminton Team to Compete in the 2009 Fajr International Badminton Tournament, Feb. 5-8 in Tehran, Iran
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Eight female athletes representing USA Badminton (USAB), including 2008 U.S. Olympians Eva Lee (Orange, Calif.) and Mesinee "May" Mangkalakiri (Garden Grove, Calif.) will travel to Tehran, Iran to compete in the Fajr International Badminton Tournament, February 5-8, 2009, at the invitation of the Iranian Badminton Federation.
In conjunction with the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) a delegation of 12 Americans, made up of players, coaches and officials, will travel to Tehran for the tournament from February 3- 9, 2009. The Fajr Tournament is a respected international badminton event and an opportunity to compete against a talented Iranian team and other international talent. Last year teams representing 23 countries competed in the Iranian tournament which celebrated its 19th year. The event is sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and results will count toward each player's international ranking.
USA Badminton Athletes competing in the event include:
Eva Lee (Orange, Calif.) - 2008 U.S. Olympian Mesinee "May" Mangkalakiri (Garden Grove, Calif.) - 2008 U.S. Olympian Kimberly Kramer (Bethesda, Md.) Tina-Rose Cavazos (San Antonio, Texas) Rachel Liao (Potomac, Md.) Tiffanie Kimura (Glenview, Ill.) Rena Wang (Arcadia, Calif.) Becky Neumann (Manhattan Beach, Calif.)
Also in the travelling delegation are:
Ms. Wendy Carter (Gig Harbor, Wash.) - Head Coach Ms. Rita Cardenas-Gamez (San Antonio, Texas) - Team Manager Mr. Paisan Rangsikitpho (Long Beach, Calif.) - USAB Official and BWF Council Member Mr. Dan Cloppas, USA Badminton Chief Executive Officer/Secretary General
ECA and USA Badminton look forward to hosting the Iranian Badminton Federation later this year when they will come to the USA for the 2009 Yonex/OCBC U.S. Open Grand Prix Championships, July 7-12 in Orange, Calif.
In addition to being a tremendous international competitive opportunity for USA Badminton athletes, this Iran exchange is in response to the U.S. government's call for expanded people-to-people exchanges with Iran. The State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) is including Iranians in a broad range of traditional educational, professional, and cultural exchange programs for the first time since 1979. Over the past two years over 250 Iranians, including artists, athletes, and medical professionals have participated in exchange programs in the United States. Through its Sports United program, ECA has brought the Iranian National Teams for Basketball, Water Polo, Weightlifting and members of the men's and women's National Table Tennis team to the United States. The State Department also sent 20 members of USA Wrestling to Iran to compete in the prestigious Takhti Cup in January 2007.

Iran Denies Visas for U.S. Women's Badminton Team
By Thomas Erdbrink
Washington Post Foreign Service
Thursday, February 5, 2009; Page A14
TEHRAN, Feb. 4 -- Iran did not issue visas for a group of U.S. female badminton players it had invited to compete in the country in events starting Friday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday, citing the "time-consuming process" of handling such applications.
"They will not participate in the competition," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi said during his weekly news conference.
The Iranian Badminton Federation, a part of Iran's Physical Education Organization, which is headed by Vice President Mohammad Aliabadi, had invited the eight players, along with four coaches and managers, to participate in a tournament during celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution.
"We are disappointed and hope the Americans will forgive us," said Zahra Tayyebin, head of the Badminton Federation's public relations office. "They should know that the Badminton Federation did all the necessary follow-ups for the visas."
Thirteen other foreign teams, including squads from Malaysia, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq, will take part in the tournament.
The Obama administration said it was mystified by the visa refusal, especially because the president and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton have expressed a willingness to engage with Tehran. The badminton team's visit would have been the first cultural exchange under the new administration, but it was arranged as part of a concerted effort by the Bush administration since 2006 to promote cultural, medical and athletic contacts between two countries that have not had diplomatic relations for three decades.
The United States cut ties with Tehran during the 1979-1981 hostage crisis, in which a group of radical students held 52 Americans captive for 444 days after storming the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.
"This is a very unfortunate situation," State Department spokesman Robert A. Wood said Wednesday.
"You know, as the secretary and others have said, when the Iranians unclench that fist, there will be a hand waiting to greet them," Wood added.
"We are very interested in trying to improve relations between the American people and the Iranian people, and this is not a good step forward in terms of trying to promote people-to-people exchanges."
On Monday, the U.S. State Department had said it hoped to reciprocate the Iranian Badminton Federation's invitation by inviting Iran's national team to the United States in July.
Since January 2007, more than 75 Iranian athletes have taken part in wrestling, weightlifting, water polo and table tennis competitions in the United States, while 32 American athletes, including 20 wrestlers, have visited Iran, the Ettemaad newspaper, which is critical of the government, wrote Wednesday.
A total of 250 Iranian artists, athletes and doctors have visited the United States since the program started, according to the State Department.
Staff writer Glenn Kessler in Washington contributed to this report.

kakinami 02-07-2009, 03:34 AM Out of curiosity why wasn't 2008 US Open womens singles champion and 2009 US team member Lili Zhou there? I have never seen 3 of the members on the team Tina, rachael and Kim, who are they and where did they come from? Is USA badminton selecting favorites and passing over people who should be representing? Shannon Pohl is another top player from the USA who is missing She had the top womens singles ranking in the world (83 in the World badminton federation)
kakinami 02-07-2009, 03:40 AM I got some good e-mails!!!
kakinami 02-07-2009, 03:41 AM Here is another example of how USABad never seems to get fixed with
the help of the USOC, or rather with the lack of action by the USOC. They
have the Board of Directors resign only to continue with the status quo.
As you read this, (if you do) keep in mind that no one can enter any tournament
on the world tour unless the entry is done by USAB. They know of every move by every US player. They have to. Also there have been problems with what Dr. Fogarty refers to as the "GANG" or "Gangsters" for 10 years now and that is what led the USOC to cut the funding of USAB. If this was a TV show it would have to be fiction/farce. Years and thousands of $$ wasted trying to inspire the USOC to get USAB to abide by actual rules/laws instead of indicts.
It would be nice if some news outfit decided to look into this. Now we have the USA Federal Government involved in the wasting of funds because they relied on the USAB/USOC, who based on Shannon's letter picked a team and admin's who did not belong based on world rankings or international experience. You have to get visas in advance for any trip let alone Iran. It is not like going into Cuba where you pay at the gate!
Anyway, enjoy!
D
kakinami 02-07-2009, 03:41 AM Here is the latest thread regarding USAB and the USOC methods of denying athletes the right to compete. The USOC's has actually conspired with USAB to deny Shannon Pohl her right to qualify or attempt to qualify for the 2009 World Championships.
Shannon is the #2 ranked USA Player from the United States.
However Dan Cloppas at USABadminton, in colusion with the USOC selected athletes to compete in a World Championship qualifying event. The USOC colludes/conspires with USAB due to force USAB to comply with USOC Bylaw.
We have always known USAB is run by Gangsters. I just everyone to see that the USOC has conspired with USAB to deny Shannon her right to attempt to qualify for the 2009 WOrld Championships. It is more apparent than ever that the USOC is part of the gang(they call it the "status quo"). Imagine living in the delusional world of the USOC and getting paid to be delusional.
Warm regards,
M
kakinami 02-07-2009, 03:42 AM Not only that but Dan had the nerve to call me up and ask for help with the planning after not inviting me. I was happy to help but obviously devistated that I wasn't invited as I could really use the poitns towards World Championship qualification. When I pressed Dan about the selection process (with the State Department on the line) he told me only the Female Olympians and the top 3 finishers at jr. nationals were invited. Then I found out that this was a complete lie as Tiffanie Kimura and another girl who are too old for Juniors were selected. Never mind the fact that Tiffanie Kimura has a stress fracture and was " too injured" to even play the Indiana Open or singles at the Mayor Daley's Sports Festival and that she has no international ranking (like many the girls invited). Not to mention that Paisan and Dan signed up for the "free trip" to the tournament despite the fact that they will not be allowed into the facility at any point when any of the women are competing. It is illegal in Iran for men to watch women play sports and all officials, coaches, and spectators have to be women with no cameras, videos, or cell phones allowed. Apparently, it's more important that Dan goes on another free vacation (like his trip to the Chicago 2016 Mayor Daley's Sports Festival which he had no purpose at) than to fund athletes that actually deserve the funding to get valuable points towards World Championship qualification. (Many of these girls being sent have no chance to qualify as they have no international ranking to speak of.) Dan knew that men weren't allowed into the facility in advance as I told them in a conference call with the State Department where they grilled me with questions about laws, how to get a visa, treatment, the tournament, etc. I also told Dan and the State Department about the difficulties to get visas to Iran. Dan was surprised to learn that a "baseball cap" wouldn't be appropriate as a head covering in iran. Dan also claimed that "yeah you're right shannon it would ahve been a good idea to invite you we didn't think of it and didn't know you went last year". Uh huh? Who do you think entered me into the tournament last year? USA Badminton! Dan conveniently waited to get my help with their logistics until it was too late to enter the tournament and add me to the list of participants. Dan also claimed that he thought i was retired despite the fact that we had just had a lengthy conversation at Mayor Daley's Sports Festival in Chicago about how I want to keep playign as much as I can but it depends on funding (as I am $93,000 in debt from my Olympic quest) but i'd like to try to make the world championships. I also reminded him that I have never submitted any letter of resignation and furthermore I recently got 3rd at the Pan Am Championships this season.
As USA and Iran have no diplomatic relations, one must get a visa in a foreign country at an Iranian embassy(maybe they were trynig to get it in Dubai? I'm not sure). I got my visa in Copenhagen. I find it hard to believe though that they would get on a plane to the middle east without sending a representative to another country to get the visas in hand first. I'm not sure. I'm sure we'll find out more but here is the latest news story from the front page of MSNBC: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29010526

kakinami 02-07-2009, 03:43 AM http://www.onenewsnow.com/AP/Search/World/Default.aspx?id=408696
There is a lot of history behind this story.
1. Shannon Pohl - US badminton player successfully entered Iran last year and played in the Iran Open badminton tournament. It made headlines all over Iran and it gave them so much publicity that they wanted her to come back the next year.
2. Iran Badminton Assoc. contacted USA Badminton and asked them to send a team. The US state department found out about it and decided they were going to get involved because it would be great for relations with US and Iran. They decided to pick up the bill to send 8 US players and 4 officials.
3. USA Badminton has never sent 4 officials to any tournament ever!! they have no money. they saw a free opportunity to get a free trip to Iran and they all took advantage of the government and the government let them.
4. The USOC turned their head to how the US picked their team for Iran. The Iran Open is a qualification tournament for the World championships. Their are rules on how teams are picked to go to these tournaments. Shannon is the second highest ranked US badminton player in the world and was not picked to be on the team. Why??? Because USA Badminton and the USOC do not follow their own rules.
Why did the government allow USA Badminton to send 4 officials on the governments dime when USAB has never sent 4 officials to anything? Does the government have disposable income for badminton players?
If big bank CEO's are exposed for their lavish trips to Vegas, big airplanes and bonuses, why is the government sending badminton players on a joy ride?
I competed on the US badminton team for 15 years and was VP on the board of directors when I retired. I just recently quit all of my volunteer work with badminton because I believe that they are corrupt.
There is a lot more but I don't want to bore you.
I hope you can find some time on your news cast to report this.

LTKS4sis 02-07-2009, 12:13 PM It's hard to believe that people want to post so many scathing remarks about a situation when they haven't bothered to learn the facts. (1) There are good reasons to use a "friendship" tournament to help further the sport all people are supposed to enjoy. If badminton in the US is ever to improve as a national sport there needs to be some recognition of athletes trying their best from different parts of the country (just look at the geographical makeup of the team, duh), some support given to try to increase the numbers of women playing, and some exposure to international play for a broader range of players than the "same old same old" from California. All of the women on the team are young, from all over the country, and their exposure can filter out well into the future and to everyone they come into contact with. (2) The fact that the State Department funded the trip means that they set the goals for the makeup of the team in consultation with the USOC and USAB. None of the funds were from USAB. (3) When trying to navigate a trip in Iran as a US team, obvious risks are involved and there are currently no experienced US women aside from coaches who could take on the task of management and coordination and at the same time represent the National Governing Body. If there are good women out there who'd like to dedicate their careers in the governing of USAB that would be terrific, but for now we go with what we have. (4) The trip was a diplomatic effort which was always going to be tenuous, and the exposure in advance which competitive trials would entail would undercut the chances of successfully entering the tournament, which in any case is only level 4 and hardly attracts the kind of high cachet that say, the Taiwan or British Open might. All I can say to the whiners and paranoid conspiracy freaks out there is "get real and get into your sport, not your ego."

Why send people to a tournament to lose? If we are to gain any recognition shouldnt we send players who would have a chance to win? I believe Pohl is from east coast and she does have a world ranking, why wasnt she invited? (Duh)
LTKS4sis 02-07-2009, 11:34 PM So we're given another instance of not checking things out before spouting off. Shannon Pohl is from the Midwest, not East Coast. (Anyway, everyone knows you can buy rankings if you sign up for enough tournaments--though this isn't to deny anyone respect for being determined and keen on the game.) The commenter has missed entirely the focus on the long-term growth of the sport and the reality that the people funding the effort had an important agenda of their own which is a far more serious matter than boasting that the US can win games at a particular event.
cooler 02-07-2009, 11:53 PM Kinda weird how nobody cares, just interested in scores....Many of those who posted here are from Malaysia. Can't blame them for not interested in US badminton politics.

Cant touch politics, threads have been closed before when the discussion escalated. So, now mostly just discuss the results, players, coaches.

Sandy 02-08-2009, 04:15 AM good progress Variella, won in WS & WD :)
(don't know if she played in XD too)
She has good potential, tall and attacking play but less accuracy.
Many time called as Pelatnas nominee but failed because of less achievements in some tournaments.

geebees90 02-13-2009, 02:19 AM I played in Fajr International as a player from Afghanistan, My Name is Syed Abdul Jalil Waiz, the Tournament has been very good, but Iranian Judiciary and technical officials are very cheaters, They would ignore faults of Irani players and give OUTS of Iranis IN in favor of their players. They did very injustice to almost all of the players. Malaysian Coach Choi Weng Sheng said that he will write to BAC about their Technical officials and the way they did hurt other players.
Alishah Hossieni of Iran played really well throughout the Tournament, Beat Wajid Ali of Pakistan, Gholam Reza, and then Kuan Kam Chung. Kuan Kam Chung is not a player of Mohd Arif's calibre, He doesn't have that speed and power...........I think Iranians will improve alot in the coming five or ten years, Because they have got a very big number of Backup and Junior Players and their Federation is working so Actively.

geebees90 02-13-2009, 02:38 AM Hmmmmmm ah by the way Turkey's team was very fit, they have improved almost 100%, Twice Stronger than they used to be last year, Their whole team was impressive, They played the best Badminton. And by the way there was the Badminton Asia Elections on the final day of the Tournament, I met Li Yongbo Representing CHINA in the Meeting, I took a pic with him ;).
Sandy 02-13-2009, 02:55 AM The results in xls file
badMania 02-13-2009, 03:07 AM It's a pity that Yoga Uki Kasah fails to establish himself in Pelatnas or in SIN. He's still so young, at 23 yo, the same age as Rian/Yoke.
geebees90 02-13-2009, 07:26 AM I saw YOGA during the tournament with Ali Kaya, YOGA seems to be a talented and skillfull player but makes alot of mistakes, I saw him making more than 20mistakes in the Men's doubles final, He hit very very very very easy shots in the net, even more than 10 Shots.........has he been in the Indonesian Team????Junior or Senior?
ctjcad 02-13-2009, 09:37 AM ..for your tidbit of info, geebees90 (Syed)! Hope you had a lot of fun playing in the tourney & best wishes for you in your baddy future..

Yoga was the partner of Yoke for about one year, while Rian was with Rendra back in Pelatnas around 2006-2007. These 4 players then "retired" from the National Team, with Rian partnering Yoke back in their club, and Rendra joined them later on. Meawhile, Yoga went to Singapore and partnered Hendra Wijaya and Chayut Trichayart for a short time too.
