Gade in Denmark Squad as England prepare for Euro bid

TEAM ENGLAND today learned that they will have to overcome Denmark at their strongest if they are to win the European Team Badminton Championship at the Echo Arena Liverpool from February 10-15.

With just under two weeks to go to the start of the Championship, all 32 competing nations submitted their squads to Badminton Europe today.

And after weeks of speculation about the Denmark line-up, former BADMINTON England Performance Director Finn Traerup Hansen, who is now Denmark’s head coach, has relented and named his strongest possible squad – including singles stars Peter Gade and Tine Rasmussen.

Gade is the man in form having just won the Korean Open Super Series men’s singles title while Rasmussen is the 2008 Yonex All England women’s singles champion as well as this month’s Korea Open winner. The Danish team, who are holders, 12-times winners and top seeds, have named 18 players in their squad although Traerup may well hold back his big guns until the knockout stages.

Team England were among the first to name their squad at the start of this month and team manager Ian Wright can draw on the experience of new European mixed doubles champions Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg as well as the men’s doubles partnership of Clark and Nathan Robertson, who reached the Malaysian Open semi-finals in early January. Those three players have nearly more than 250 international appearances between them.

In contrast Liverpool’s Helen Davies is the rookie in the team, having been selected after making a winning debut against Poland in Warsaw in December.

Fourth seeds Poland or fifth seeds Holland are Team England’s likely semi-final opponents if the second seeds and former champions (1978 and 1984) come through Group 8 to earn their place in the knockout quarter-finals. There they are expected to face eighth seeds Ukraine.

Poland have named world No.9 Przemyslaw Wacha and doubles specialists Michel Logosz, Robert Mateusiak and Kamila Augustyn in their line-up while the Dutch have also named their strongest squad with Eric Pang and Dicky Palyama for men’s singles and 2002 European champion Yao Jie and Judith Meulendijks for women’s singles.

Third seeds Germany are Denmark’s likely semi-final opponents and their strength lies in the women’s events where they can call on 2006 and 2008 European champion Xu Huaiwen or Juliane Schenk to play both singles and doubles if necessary.

England start their campaign in the evening session (6pm) on Tuesday, February 10 against the Czech Republic before facing Wales on the Wednesday and Scotland on the Thursday evening.

The Scotland squad includes Jillie Cooper, who recently won the Bank of Scotland International and Yonex Welsh International women’s doubles titles with England squad member Mariana Agathangelou while Super Series Masters mixed doubles finalists Imogen Bankier and Edinburgh-born England player Robert Blair are also in opposing camps

When Wales and Scotland meet on the opening night it will bring Andrew Bowman up against Martyn Lewis in the doubles. The pair won the Welsh International men’s doubles together in November.

A total of 410 players representing a total of 32 nations were confirmed today and can be viewed on www.europeanbadminton.com

BADMINTON England Chief Executive Adrian Christy said: “It’s great for the fans that Denmark have named players like Peter Gade in their squad and I am delighted to see such a top-quality entry for the Team Championship. It will whet the appetite for the Individual Championship when it comes to Manchester in April next year.

“But first we want to get behind Team England. The home fans can play a vital part if England are to end that 25-year wait for another team title.”

The groups competing over the first three days of the European Team Championship (with seeding in brackets) are:

GROUP 1 GROUP 2 GROUP 3 GROUP 4

Denmark (1) France (7) Germany (3) Russia (6)
Spain Cyprus Slovakia Latvia
Slovenia Portugal Estonia Norway
Ireland Switzerland Sweden Belarus

GROUP 5 GROUP 6 GROUP 7 GROUP 8

Netherlands (5) Poland (4) Ukraine (8) England (2)
Austria Finland Italy Czech Republic
Israel Lithuania Hungary Wales
Belgium Bulgaria Iceland Scotland

Final positions in the 2008 European Team Championship:

1 Denmark, 2 England, 3 Poland, 4 Netherlands, 5 Germany, 6 Russia, 7 France, 8 Ukraine, 9 Scotland, 10 Bulgaria,11 Sweden, 12 Czech Republic, 13 Iceland, 14 Finland, 15 Ireland, 16 Estonia.

Denmark have won the last seven European titles and 12 in all since the competition began in 1972. England have been the champion nation five times but have not struck gold since the 1984 Europeans in Preston – the last time the event was staged in England.

Sweden are the only other nation to have been champions (1992 and 1994) and they are in Group 3 with third seeds Germany, Slovakia and Estonia.

It is the first time the European Team Championship has not been played concurrently with the European Individual Championships. Instead, Manchester’s MEN Arena will host the European Individual Championship in April 2010.

It is nice to see badminton thriving in Europe with so many countries participating. It also gives us in Asia a chance to get acquainted with some of the players' names, especially those that have not been seen in tournaments here in the East. It would even be nicer if some of our European BCers can post some pics here to enable us associate the face with the name. :)

The Mixed Team Championships has completed its second day with another four days remaining. So far, some of the better known badminton countries did not disappoint although some players created upsets, notablythe defeat of Joachim Persson of Denmark by Pablo Abian of Spain in MS. It is good that unknown players can shine as underdogs.

The following countries remain undefeated after 2 days, with varying results, except those highlighted which made perfect scores:

1. Belarus beat Norway 5-0 and Latvia 5-0.
2. Belgium beat Israel 5-0 and Austria 4-1
3. Bulgaria beat Lithuania 4-1 and Finland 4-1.
4. England beat Czech Republic 5-0 and Wales 5-0.
5. France beat Cyprus 5-0 and Portugal 4-1.
6. Germany beat Slovakia 5-0 and Estonia 5-0.
7. Iceland beat Hungary 3-2 and Italy 3-2.
8. Netherlands beat Austria 5-0 and Israel 4-1.
9. Poland beat Lithuania 4-1 and Finland 4-1.
10. Russia beat Latvia 5-0 and Norway 5-0.
11. Scotland beat Czech Republic 4-1 and Wales 4-1.
12. Sweden beat Estonia 3-2 and Slovakia 5-0.
13. Switzerland beat Portugal 3-2 and Cyprus 5-0.
14. Ukraine beat Italy 5-0 and Hungary 5-0.

It would seem from the above that Cyprus, Latvia, Norway and Slovakia are the weaker teams.

Some players contributed more points for their respective countries.

FOR the first time Setanta are to screen top-class badminton in England when they screen the European Team Championships final from the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

After Joachim Persson's unexpected loss to Spain's Pablo Abian, Denmark redeemed themselves by securing two perfect 5-0 scores against Slovenia and Ireland and remain in good contention to win the title.

Other notable perfect winners include Russia (v Belarus), Netherlands (v Belgium) and surprisingly, Finland (v Lithuania).

But some of yesterday's perfectionists had to give away a match (4-1) against more worthy opponents and they include:

1. England (v Scotland)

Commonwealth Games Champion Susan Hughes was not to be denied and won a well-deserved point for Scotland against presumably the younger Elizabeth Cann, albeit in three games.

Even Scotland's lesser known pair of Andrew Bowman/Watson Briggs managed to snatch the second game from the more illustrious Anthony Clark/ Nathan Robertson, 21-13, 22-24, 21-7.

2. Germany (v Sweden)

Sweden's point came from their WD of Emma Wengberg/Emelie Lennartsson who beat Birgit Overzier/Sandra Marinello, 19-21, 21-16, 21-16.

3. Ukraine (v Iceland)

Iceland secured a sole point from their XD.

And Belarus which completely knocked out Latvia and Norway the day before were on the receiving end yesterday when Russia gave them not much of a chance with a 5-0 demolition. Now will Russia be the dark horse of the tournament?

Not forgetting Poland which continued their march steadily with another decisive win over strong Bulgaria 4-1, a scoreline which Poland had managed for all their three matches so far.

Bulgaria's WS Linda Zechiri was too strong for Poland's Anna Narel when she won 21-11, 21-14 in 26 min.

Poland continued to secure points from the more reliable MS Przemyslaw Wacha and MD Michal Logosz/Robert Mateusiak who had not lost any of their three matches so far, with RM also featuring in XD.

So the remaining 8 worthy teams which had survived this far and will compete for a place in tomorrow's semi finals (I presume) are not much of a surprise except perhaps Ukraine:

1. Denmark v France
2. Germany v Russia
3. Netherlands v Poland
4. Ukraine v England

My prediction for the winners is as highlighted. The match between Netherlands and Poland could go either way. And my gamble on Russia may be off-target too. :D

What is yours? :)

The Tournament software website is a disappointment as not all the results were not updated for yesterday's matches. Only the match that Denmark won 3-1 against France was shown.

However, I got a detailed report from European Badminton Championships website as follows:

14th February 2009

Team England through to European semi-finals

By Daniel Smith, Samuel Van Gelder and Gill Lake

Team England booked their place in tomorrow’s European Team Championship semi-final after a largely dominating performance against eighth seeds Ukraine.

The English pairing of Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork got the hosts off to a great start in the mixed doubles at Liverpool's Echo Arena.

With Wallwork dominating at the net and Robertson showing his lethal side throughout with his trademark overhead smashes, the result was never in doubt. Robertson hit one smash at a staggering 299kph in a comfortable first game, which England took 21-9 in just 10 minutes.

The second game was not as comfortable, but Wallwork continued to defend well at the net to ensure England’s first point of the match after a 21-9 21-14victory.

It was a much more even affair in the second match as World Number 21 Andrew Smith came from a game down to defeat Ukraine's Dmytro Zavadskyy 17-21 21-15 21-18 in 52 minutes. Smith showed his fighting spirit to overcome the stubborn Zavadskyy, who is ranked 90th in the world.

Ukraine’s only point of the match came as Larisa Griga beat a brave Elizabeth Cann. Griga, who is ranked 12 places above Cann at No 22 in the world rankings, won 21-15 21-19 in an entertaining match.

However, any thoughts of a Ukrainian revival were put to bed as Chris Adcock and Robert Blair secured the third and decisive point for Team England after their 21-14 21-12 victory against the Ukrainian pair Valery Atrashchenkov and Vladislav Druzchenko in the men’s doubles.

Victorious Blair, winning his 49th cap, was pleased with his team’s performance and sees no reason why they can’t progress to the final. He said: “We worked hard and came through tonight. I think we will be too strong for Poland tomorrow but they have some good male players.”

England will now face Poland in tomorrow’s semi-final, which takes place at 2pm. It will be a rematch of last year's semi-final in which England won 3-0. Poland recorded a 3-1 victory over fifth seeds Netherlands.

Although Poland’s Robert Mateusiak and Kamila Augustyn secured a 21-14 21-9 win, the Dutch duo of Jorrit De Ruiter and Ilse Vaessen were left to rue a string of unforced errors that ultimately cost them the match in the mixed doubles.

However, in the men’s singles Poland did not have it all their way as Przemyslaw Wacha had to fight hard to defeat Eric Pang. Wacha, ranked ninth in the world, combined superb smashes and delicate drop shots in the third game which ultimately won him the match as he ran out 21-15 10-21 21-13 winner.

Netherlands were not to be outdone though as Judith Meulendijks notched up their only victory in the match. The world number 27 was the comprehensive winner against Natalia Pocztowiak as she sealed a 21-9 21-12 win.

Robert Mateusiak took to the court for the second time in the night in the men’s doubles with partner Michal Logosz. Mateusiak was in a devastating mood and Ruud Bosch felt full force of one of his smashes in the face.

Poland rushed ahead in the opening game but the Dutch duo of Bosch and Koen Riddler responded with eight unanswered points. But it was business as usual in the second game as Poland closed play with a 21-15 21-12 win securing their place in tomorrow’s semi-finals.

Russia 3 Germany 2

The Russian mixed doubles pair of Alexander Nikolaenko and Valeri Sorokina took the first game comfortably against Germany’s Johannes Schoettler and Birgit Overzier, who played more consistently in the second game but never threatened their opponents allowing Russia to take the lead 21-11 21-13.

In the singles Mark Zwiebler levelled the match for Germany with a business- like win over Vladimir Malkov 21-9 21-13. Juliane Schenk had to work hard to overcome Russia’s Ella Diehl but eventually came out on top 21-14 21-19 to give Germany the advantage.

Next it was Russia’s turn to level the match when Alexander Nikolaenko and Vitaly Durkin beat Michael Fuchs and Ingo Kinderwater 21-17 21-19 in a fiercely contested men’s doubles.

It was left to the women's doubles to decide the match with the world No 13 pair of Sorokina and Nina Vislova proving too strong for the rare pairing of Birgit Overzier and Xu Huaiwen, beating them 21-10 21-8 to take Russia through to the semi finals.

Denmark 3 France 1

Holders and top seeds Denmark continued their march towards the medals with a 3-1 victory over France.

Jan Jorgensen of Denmark never looked under pressure in the opening game with a 21-13 21-14 victory over the Frenchman Brice Leverdez.

The women's singles followed with France squaring the match at 1-1 as Pi Hongyan easily overcame Nanna Brosolat Jensen 21-9 21-9.

Korean Open winners Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen took the men's doubles to make it 2-1 with succinct win over Baptiste Careme and Ronan Labar 21-16 21-11.

World no 1 Tine Rasmussen made another women's doubles appearance, partnering Marie Roepke to clinch the match for the 12-times champions with a 21-12 21-13 win over Laura Choinet and Weny Rahmawati.

So I got a perfect score for my prediction! ;):):D

1. England v Poland
2. Denmark v Russia

Who will win and in which events?

England have homecourt advantage, Denmark have always been a favourite, more so now as the title holders.

Both Poland and Russia have been fantastic to make it this far. Both of them are dark horses but will they be able to triumph over their more illustrious opponents?

England's weaker links could be their singles department. Could Poland take advantage and secure a point in the doubles as well? The MD may prove to be too difficult, but what of WD and XD?

Denmark is the Mount Everest, but still can be conquered with a little bit of luck and good weather for the Russians, whose forte seems to be in the doubles. But Denmark's Boe and Mogensen are not Korean Open winners for nothing and many even count them as extremely good candidates for the AE. Russia must win at least a singles match and this is not as insurmountable as even Joachim Persson was beaten by Spain's Pablo Abian, unless Denmark decide to field someone else. Let's hope Tine Rasmussen will not feature in WS, but this may be too much of a hope for Russia.

So all four teams will definitely go all out to secure a place in the final and will showcase their best players.

It will perhaps be the best entertainment for the entire Championships. How I wish I could watch it live! :p

England are receiving great resistance from Poland with the score tied at 2-2.
England won the XD and WS and Poland took the MS and MD.

Poland's MD of Michal Logosz/Robert Mateusiak did well to beat Nathan Robertson/Anthony Clark 21-18, 21-12. So did Przemyslaw Wacha who also won a point against Andrew Smith 21-11, 22-20.

Thankfully England scored through WS Elizabeth Cann against Kamila Augustyn 11-21, 21-4, 21-9. I think Elizabeth had not performed as well before.

Now the important decider is the WD, and England's Donna Kellogg/Jennifer Wallwork are leading Kamila Augustyn/Malgorzata Kurdelska by 21-12, 14-19 ...
Will Poland be able to win the second game and force the match to a thrilling finish? Donna as well as Kamila had both played a match earlier in XD and WS respectively.

Yes the Polish girls had taken the second game 21-17 to extend the match to a rubber. Maybe they now have a slight edge and England must be on tenterhooks now despite playing at home.

So far, the English girls scored heavily on smashes but might have lost quite a bit on unforced errors as the Polish girls seemed to have gained many points on "others", presumably from the mistakes of their English opponents.

England are now leading quite comfortably at 13-8 and if they kept up the pressure with their attacking smashes, I'm afraid Poland may have to succumb.

Poland need to change strategy from defence to attack if they hope to win!

At this time and place Poland WAS CONCENTRATED on the WS. In the tie vs ENG in Polish line-up first time during these championships appeared Kamila Augustyn. She has been the best player in this team in singles and doubles.
Of course you are right that generally Poland has not enough concentrated on WS in the last period. They try to improve the situation in the future.
When speaking about MX and WD, do not forget the absence of Nadia Kostiuczyk, the best Polish female doubles player. She was operated because of a hip injury.

Oh how unlucky that Poland was unable to put up the best team. But these things do happen. I'm not sure whether Kamila has played in Southeast Asia before, but I have read of her name and is quite impressed with her performance in Europe. That's why I expected her to beat Elizabeth Cann, who did not perform so well in this tournament.

But Poland must have done well and exceeded their own expectations to become the last four. Congratulations! :)

On the other hand, Poland were third last year and may have to fight Russia today for retaining their position.

As for Russia, they were sixth last year and now they are at least fourth. Which means Russia are the team that have improved more than the others.

However, I'm not sure whether Poland and Russia will play to decide the 3rd and 4th positions as the tournament scores website does not indicate.

Now I hope England will have the entire Liverpool fans to come to the badminton court and cheer their countrymen for a change. :D

Then England, and even Andrew Smith will be inspired beyond belief and Denmark may be totally shocked before they realize it to make any sort of comeback. However to overcome Tine Rasmussen, Elizabeth Cann needs to surmon all her energies plus everything else and still may be found wanting.

I'd say England should take the important inspirational opening XD and 50/50%chances on MS, MD and WD.

Don't give up that easily England and for all you know, the Queen may grace the occasion with the Minister of Sports for that added motivation. Then, maybe even Elizabeth also can. ;)

This time there is no match for 3rd place. Anyway, I imagine POL vs RUS a chance 51:49: with WS and WD easy for RUS, MS and MD easy for POL and deciding MX, difficult but rather for POL:).
And you are absolutely right that <i>these things do happen</i>, speaking about the lack of one of best players. For example, last year in Herning Poland won bronze playing without Mateusiak.
One of the problems with Augustyn is that she has not chosen between doubles and singles. It means she was more practising for doubles (strong combination with Kostiuczyk - winner one time Denmark Open) but playing in OG in Beijing WS (looser in 1st round vs Jun Jae Youn, KOR, 15-21 5-21). I was even a bit surprised that she won 1st game vs Cann. But the level Augustyn and Cann is not very different so there was in fact a chance for POL to win WS as you expected.

The Danish coach is probably letting some of the second-stringers have a go. with Joachim Persson, Joachim Fischer-Nielsen/Christinna Pedersen, and Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen in the team for the Final matchup. Instead of having the usual lineup Peter Gade, Lars Paaske/Jonas Rasmussen, and Thomas Laybourn/Kamilla Rytter-Juhl. One of the factor could also be that Rytter-Juhl has to play in the decider, so, the coaches let the younger pair compete in the first match (which they eventually lost).

It's now 2-2 as Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen beat Nathan Robertson/Anthony Clark and the decider will be between Donna Kellogg/Jenny Wallwork and Marie Roepke/Kamilla Rytter-Juhl.

But from two matches and two points down, Denmark proved they are worthy and resilient champions when they caught up from behind to nip England. The turning point came from their star MD Boe and Mogensen when under tremendous pressure at England's playground, they took back the rubber game to enable Denmark to go on to win in the WD and the title as well.

Poor England must be hurting very badly as they were on the brink of victory in the MD and despite Anthony Clark playing his heart out after expending much energiy in the XD, his partner Robertson was not helping him very much with his unsporting behaviour again. :(

Used that stream but later found the espn stream (good tv coverage, good commentary). Used TV ants. It worked really well and I recorded it (using hidownload) until after 4pm when my isp slows my internet down and the stream was very jumpy so missed the last 3 matches...oh well England did loose all of them

My mate made the tv quite a few times as well :)

Cheers for the help guys. If I could perhaps find when the finals will be repeated on that channel, and if there repeated well before 4pm or well after I will be able to record the whole thing. Shall do some research espn tv guides.

Might watch badminton more often, enjoy the olympics and I enjoyed this (probably more so because I live in Liverpool, really should have gone and watched it).

EDIT: woo, that was quick http://telebisyon.net/programa/ESPN+Singapore/sports/

just watched the repeat telecast of polish girls playing against wallwork/kellog... wallwork played much better than kellog imho... and possess a strong smash... i thought kellog left a lot of gaps in her gameplay
