*WARNING* motto does not apply to over 50s as a serious injury could be sustained :p

This is the toughest to live by, but clearly the wisest. You will always play someone who will make you look like an idiot, so the only way to gauge your play is against yourself. I know it's tough, but if you played your best and lost 21-11 you should not be disappointed.

This frame of mind is also single-handedly responsible for my modest amount of success. Too often we hear the "failure is not an option" speech from figures of authority. Fact is, if you throw two people together in a match on a badminton court (or in any other conflict, for that matter) then someone has to come out on top. The sooner we all come to accept this, the better off we'll all be.

My boy's coach has a very good and simple motto "FOCUS". I think it is very apt for players who wants to improve their badminton game. FOCUS.
F for Fighting Spirit, be Fearless, be FOCUS.
O for taking the Opportunity to learn/improve/train or to kill off the opponent during the game.
C = Creativity, about creating chances to win
U = Understanding the skills and strategy
S = Success will come eventually.
If in trouble, just remember FOCUS!!!

On the court:
After losing the rally...
... Boy, do I feel old! (hee hee but I got you running 4 times further than me)
After winning the rally...
... YES! (old fart trick shot #3, 28 remaining)
Off the court:
"An empty badminton court is a terrible thing to waste!"
Cheers!

In light of the rally point system, my motto nowadays should be this:
"Just keep the bloody shuttle in play!"
It's kinda strange but we get more unforced errors than before when we're playing 15 points.

I like to think so - It's my personal adaptation of "bushido." Bushido is the concept that Peter Rasmussen gave credit to for his unlikely 1997 world championship. Do a wikipedia search on it, you might find it interesting. Here's another motto that I personalized a little:

"Faster, harder, stronger."
that's a bit of a mantra I have for myself to put the extra effort in, dive that much further, make the returns harder for the opponent. I also tend to say "boom, headshot!" when people get hit in the head. Sometimes inappropriately.

My own personal mantra is "hit it downwards".
Others I've heard include the ever-popular "hit it where they aren't", "hit it where they least want it" and, probably my favourite, "don't pat it - T**T IT!" (which will probably only make sense to the Brits;)).
A couple of anti-mottos (i.e. phrases to decry bad play) have surfaced at our club as well - "poor standard", "weak", and, the ultimate putdown, "not good enough at this level".

love all means both teams have 0

so love mean the person has 0 points

The origin of the use of "love" for zero is also disputed; it is possible that it derives from the French word for the egg (l'œuf) because an egg looks like the number zero. "Love" is also said to derive from "l'heure" or "the hour" (more likely to be translated as "the time") in French. Another possibility of the origin comes from the Dutch "iets voor lof doen," which means to do something for nothing. The word 'lof' (nothing) has changed over time to 'love'

Here it is:
"Beat the people that are better than me (i.e. 4 people in my age group for my club), beat the people that are worse than me, and beat/surpass my coaches and my dad. Never hold back against anyone in my league."
I am not actually likely to beat either my coaches, my dad or more than 2 of my current superiors (as the last 2 are absolute monsters, for want of a better word), but there's nothing wrong with trying, is there?

for next times my name is Dory...
just an little story how i got that motto:
it was the first stage in the Israeli national tournament U17
i was vs some guy that even my couch didn't come to see me playing...
few moments before it i ate some food...so i was in 100% done (dead lol)
first point. im serving...
my first thought was "lets show everyone how you do it"
and in 10-5 for me. no one was playing on the other courts.
just looking on my game
and i won the first set..
in the second i was a bit confused "how the hell i did that?"
so i started to play easy and saved some strength for the 3th set
i lost in the second on 19
3 set was the best one... 21-13
for me...
from that day it is the only thought in the head when im playing
the sad thing was that i lost in the other game
cuz i was dead cant move at all
