well since there isn't a badminton team at the high school i'm going to, ill have to play on the tennis team, since my parents told me i should go. my question is, would playing tennis regulary everyday mess up my badminton? my mom said once i got all the movements and strokes figured out in tennis, ill be able to adjust back and forth. what do you guys think?

Two entirely different game. One does not improve the other. The only thing you could gain is increase fitness and stamina but that could be said of any sport that you choose to participate in. But is this question not a moot point since your school does not offer badminton anyway so what other choice have you got:(

Hey, you're in high school, just play lots of sports and have fun. Don't worry too much

just wanna let you know, if you're gonna do proper tennis strokes. you will find that if you play tennis for a while, you will end up 'running' on the badminton court instead of proper footwork.

tennis uses more of the 'arm' whereas badminton is 'wrist'. if you use wrist in tennis (like a few of my friends found out when we play socially) can hurt the wrist.

i play competitive badminton and tennis socially but differentiate my strokes/technique depending on what i'm playing. if your playing tennis for school, i think just focus on tennis. once you can play something its hard to forget. you can easily pick up badminton again afterwards. unless you can revert from one to another, i would recommend not put the two together.

why not go to a school with badminton? you might regret not playing your favourite sport during your precious years at high school. :)

I play both tennis, badminton and table tennis competitivly on a regular basis and as long as you know the correct technique for each sport and you don't start switching techniques, you should be fine. Badminton is my main sport:) but it isn't affected by table tennis or tennis.

Another thought, why not start a badminton team?

Yeah, I play badminton, tennis and squash to a reasonable standard and as long as you don't start trying to play badminton shots in tennis or the other way round, you'll be fine. Use proper techniques in both sports so you don't get hurt.

The starting a club idea is great. If some of your friends play badminton, go and find a PE teacher and ask why there is no badminton club. Maybe make a petition for potential players to sign.

Agree

Not necessarily. In tennis you may see a huge arm swing but the power generated is related to the wrist follow through at the end of the stroke. Try it and you'll notice the difference. All good tennis players have that "wrist snap".

WhiteRice94, it might work out better that you concentrate on tennis during the tennis season (at school) and once that is over, amp up your badminton training. Me personally, I have never found tennis and badminton to mix. Squash and badminton are compatible. Good luck :)

I see myself as a badminton player *not* a tennis player. But as it is summer here there isn't a lot of badminton going on at the moment. So I've been playing tennis most days of the week for the past few weeks, and attending coaching sessions. I play badminton once a week currently, and I can safely say that it hasn't affected my badminton technique one bit. As long as you mentally seperate the two I think you should be fine. They're different enough that you shouldn't really bring anything from one to the other, so that way, one shouldn't affect the other.

I also see myself as a badminton player, and a good one.

but I'd like to say everybody here doesn't know what they're talking about until they'll have tried racketlon. Racketlon is the sport where you play consecutively table tennis (ping pong), badminton, squash, tennis.

And I can say you, the sports help each other (develop coordination and reflexes). Of course you won't beat people who train badminton exclusively, but you'll learn at a much faster pace.

lol know how to play badminton at a high level has helped me learn tennis a lot easier. Backhand slice was simple to me, as was serving and footwork (specifically the split step). In fact i felt quite full of myself in a newbies tennis lesson since i had already mastered those techniques thanks to my badminton (the look on those guys faces when i pulled of a few full power serves in a row was priceless).

I havent found the newbie tennis games/practices ive done to have any impact posative or negative on my badminton though.

this is much depending on individual. some can, some cant, to play tennis and badminton.
myself and few BC members are playing tennis and badminton as well. pick-up the badminton racket, auto switch to badminton mode, footwork, grip styles and etc. pick-up the tennis racket, auto switch to tennis mode.
simple advice, if you cant go together with 2 sports, just drop one. :)

1 hour - table tennis, direct to tennis for 2 hours. then 1-2 hrs later, to badminton session. nowadays maybe my old body cant take it...:p:D
