2009 All England
Taufik Hidayat is seeded 7 in this tournament.
Round of 32: He will be facing Hsieh Yu Hsin [TPE].
Round of 16: Chetan Anand [IND] or Andrew Smith [ENG]
Since Taufik cut himself loose from the Indonesian Badminton Association to become an independent professional player, everyone is asking this question:
Can Taufik Hidayat win the Mens Singles title this time?
All the Best to Taufik Hidayat as an independent professional player.
:):):)

I would be happy if he can win LCW during me semis if they meet each other. And if he win over LCW in the semis.. i would root for him to win AE.

I'd give my vote to him if LCW wasn't there.
But to get real, Taufik is unpredictable.I hope he'd prove something to us.

I see that TH's tough match will start from the QF, where he will face PG or SS.
.
Man to watch this tournament is TH. Not Lindan or LCW.. as many wants him to win. LCW would also want to win his 1st AE title.

This would be a most interesting match: TH versus LCW at the Semi-Finals.

But LCW and LD are there so, it may be just a dream for TH... or he may persevere and win... my prediction will depend on how TH perform in the first few matches... His match to defeat PG should be an interesting one... If he indeed beat PG, I may give a vote for him :D

It's not just Taufik Hidayat or Lee Chong Wei.
Everyone, from Henri Hurskainen to Lin Dan, wants to win it.
The question is: Who among them has what it takes to win the title?

Win every game, Lee Chong Wei.
2 sets all to finals.

In term of sheer technique skill, taufik is better than LCW with his net play, power smash and deception. Question is whether he actually trained all the way for the past 3 month. If he somehow manage to get to 90% of peak physical fitness, I think he can beat both LCW and lindan. But the thing is, nobody ever knows when it comes to the laid back taufik. May turn out to be a disappointment as well, losing tamely to Peter.

not always last year AE08, Taufik had to face LCW in the quarter... TH really wanted to win that match but his condition is not good as this period of time. after MO'08 Taufik really become different player... and he is more motivated.... and of course he got confidence since he played to final before and even got a first place once last year....
Old TH is hardly get to QF and because of that you can see his play on Thomas Cup'08 when he had to play...eh,,, I forgot in the semi when Indonesia lost he should be the one who save Indonesia because at that time the score is 2-0.... he played totally bad , nervous and etc... this is because he do not play that high after AG'06 and never feel the pressure until he got one in TC'08
I'm sorry if you guys can't understand this....
TH now is different... let's hope he shows us who he is actually !!!

He...he...he...You all will see a totally different TH in just two days...
Round 32, you will see the power TH had when he was only 13 years
Round 16, you will see the style of his play when he was only 14 years
Round 8, you will see his techniques he employed when he was only 15
Round 4, you will him play with half of his real power
Final: You will FINALLY see the real TH with his 7 newly acquired techniques I mentioned earlier in another thread.

Yes, if the AE crowd supports him all the way like the FO08 crowd. But of course, the AE crowd's the most boring( or most 'civilised') of all ,so no,even if TH packs in an eighth trick.
Plus LD's draw is so easy he can play at 50% of his level and win the title.Tonight Super Dan only has to play at 10% of his level to beat AS.Even the organisers are merciful.Scheduling the match till the last to give AS maximum rest and recovery so there is some badminton in the match.
TH can wait for next year. That's when the daughter's old enough to ask him why he's been losing to LD since AG and what's he gonna do about it so she can be proud of his badminton. They say child(esp daughter) pressure is the biggest motivator.

So what do you guys think after his match with HYH. Was he holding back or training not up to par yet. I mean on one end, it took Taufik 3 game to beat a "not exactly top player" but at the same time he point just took off at the last leg of game 3.

Taufik seemed quite distracted during the match. He was watching the INA doubles beside him more than he was paying attention to the match.
On his performance in the match:
Lifted to middle court far too often. This was pretty much the only way HYH was getting points; that, and Taufik messing up net shots. He also was returning it almost solely to his opponent's forehand.
I'm sure Taufik had some logic behind what he was doing, but it wasn't working as well as it should have been..
Still, I'm happy that he won and I'll be back cheering him on tomorrow.

..however, the prestige of the Asian Games titles is often times debated/argued (main reason is it only involves Asian players; just like the opposite Commonwealth Games); also, it hasn't been a IBF/BWF sanctioned-event..
OTOH, the other 3 "major" titles are no doubt prestigious.
WC probably ranks last in the "top 3" list as yes, it has gone to an annual event.

If it weren't prestigious, Lindan wouldn't have moan and groan after his defeat to Taufik. Limsy, what I heard was Taufik beat Lee Hyun Ill in a very bias line call game for the 2002 AG title. The match was played in Korea of course.

Don't tell me those AG is harder to get than Opens because it is the opposite.

Still, I'm happy that he won and I'll be back cheering him on tomorrow.
.
Perhaps Hidayat was more worried for the INA Doubles than for his own match. It appeared that as soon as Dasuki/Sukmawan lost their match next court, he returned with concentration and moved up one gear to finish his match quickly.
Destricto_Ense ... TH-HYH match 21-19, 15-21, 21-14 was in 1 hour 2 mins; Did TH show any sign of extreme tiredness during the match?

But I can see where you are going through all your post........... sucking up to Lindan. Its too bad that you are so blinded in defending your idol that you fail to realize no one is denying Lindan's achievement.
Unlike Taufik, Lindan work his ass off during training and I can respect him for his commitment. But that doesn't change the fact that winning back to back AG is far harder than an annual WC or All England.

2009 All England
Taufik Hidayat is seeded 7 in this tournament.
Round of 32: He will be facing Hsieh Yu Hsin [TPE]
Round of 16: Chetan Anand [IND] or Andrew Smith [ENG]
.
So, in Round of 16, Taufik will face Andrew Smith [ENG] today, Thursday 5-Mar-2009. And many think that TH will win this round too.
The next round will be the Quarter-Finals, where either Peter Gade [DEN] or Ng Wei [HKG] will be waiting for him.
Many are hoping to watch a TH-PG match there.

Taufik ain't gonna win the All England playing like he did today, I'm afraid. He's a notoriously slow starter, but even in the latter two sets he didn't seem in the game. He was hardly doing any smashes at all, which I thought was surprising.
I really hope he ups his game for playing Gade tomorrow, but two 3-set matches might have taken it out of him.
Still, it was nice to see him beat the home-boy. I was the only person in the crowd shouting "GO TAUFIK!!" :P

So... Today, Friday 6-Mar-2009, at the Quarter-Finals, Taufik will face Peter Gade.
wow after reading this thread, i really want to see TH vs LD in the final....:D
Taufik still has to defeat PG and then LCW/Ville Lang first, before he gets to challenge LD.

I was the only person in the crowd shouting "GO TAUFIK!!" :PTH is saving his best for last (i.e. LD). :D I hope he remember that he has to reach there first:p

Taufik Coach (Mulyo) said that he won in 3 sets because there was something wrong with his legs:
"Pelatih Taufik, Mulyo Handoyo menyatakan, Taufik kehilangan set pertama karena kondisi kakinya kurang fit sebelum pertandingan. "Sehingga tadi dia bermain agak berat," kata Mulyo, Kamis (5/3) malam waktu Birmingham, usai mendampingi Taufik. " (KOMPAS - http://olahraga.kompas.com/read/xml/2009/03/06/0236478/taufik.dan.bonaahsan.ke.perempat.final..)

for me both TH and LD are one of the best players in the modern era..
on his TH prime years, LD could be easily beaten by TH.. now, TH's quality has been decreasing so it is just okay if LD could defeat TH..
remember, on TH's prime years, he is the king while LD still climbing on the tree to be the best.

I think it remains to be seen who will win if the clash of both at peak happens. TH is full of finesse but LD is raw speed and power. The game will be very very mental. TH will be pulling LD into a net battle but the danger with a speedy LD is that TH will have much less margin for error.

Yet he still won?! Maybe he realised from FO08 that winning in 3 games suit him better.Use G1 as warm up and make opponent feel after G1, the only way for them is down.
But PG with MF is a potent formula.
TH will require maximum support from you to keep him INTERESTED.The key is to keep him motivated. He may just do it for one big fan.He has shown he can last 60+ mins at a stretch now. Please consistently cheer for him between points. That's how he lasted in FO08. Constant refuelling from the crowd. "Taufik Magic!" they cheered.
The reason TH has won so far must be your constant support. It's the quality and consistency, not quantity of the cheer that counts. All the best to you and TH.

First LD has 3 AEs (04, 06, 07). Second if you want to compare LD and TH, you should use the argument 1 WC + 3 AE >> 2 AG as TH also has one WC.
I just read from Kompas.com, actually when LD won AE (04, 06 and 07), TH was absent, he did not participate in AE from 2005-2007...
So, actually LD can only won 1 (where TH participated in AE).... :)
"Taufik, finalis All England pada 1999 dan 2000, yang berharap dapat memenangi gelar juara turnamen tertua tersebut, termasuk tahun ini setelah absen pada 2005-2007. Tahun lalu, Taufik tersingkir di perempatfinal setelah kalah dari pemain Malaysia Lee Chong Wei."

Scarce titles for Taufik. Last "significant one" (in terms big prize money) was the 2006 Indonesia Open, a tourney which LinDan has avoided like a plague (i believe since 2005)..

Heck, as a matter of fact, Taufik had missed quite a few tourneys where LinDan had won. Should we discount those titles won by LinDan, as well??
Again, the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games are debatable "big tourneys" (i've already given the reasons). The only 3 "big ones" that really count are the:
1. All England
2. Olympics
3. World Championships
4. Maybe the Grand Prix Final (which occurred prior to 2000). Last yr's version of the Super Series Masters Finale.

I think TH missed 2005 AE due to injury, so this one is no one's fault. He got married in 2006 and argued with PBSI in 2007, so these two are arguably TH's faults.
Also, in fact, TH won quite a few titles beating LD along the way: 2004 Indonesia MSSF TH 2:1 LD, 2005 Singapore MSSF TH 2:0 LD, 2005 WC MSF TH 2:0 LD, 2006 AG MSF TH 2:0 LD. I am not sure whether there are other tournaments in which TH won but LD was beaten by some other player.

Who plays in the Commonwealth Games? Lee Chong Wei? Yeah that's about it... Who doesn't play in the Asian Games (and would have a realistic chance)? I can only think of Peter Gade ;) (sorry if I'm missing someone obvious). So it's not really just the fact that it's every four years is it? There's really no right or wrong. There are clearly many ways of seeing it. It's endlessly debatable :).coz for TH fans, that's the only edge they have on LD now. Wow, what an edge, lol. If that make u feel warm and fuzzy, go ahead, clung onto your AG medal. I'll take an AE or any other open title anyday.

..we only take into consideration the top 3 "major" tourneys as "prestigious", and not the AG or Commonwealth Games, because of 2 reasons (besides other reasons):
1. All players are involved and
2. They are all BWF sanctioned events.
Those 3 events are "no doubters"..
Now, if BWF were to change their mind and
1. Sanction the AG and Commonwealth Games as well as
2. Allow all players to compete, then we can consider them as "prestigious". But then again, what is the realistic chance of that happening, esp. to the latter possibility??..;)

Little doubt about the top 3. But it doesn't mean anything "less" than that has no prestige.

Top 3 events have little or no doubt(s) on their prestige..
AG and Commonwealth Games have more doubts on their prestige..Those 2 reasons given should be enough, don't they??..
Which one would you choose/consider??..

There are of course other reasons which make those top 3 events more "prestigious" than the others..

u said i suck up to LD
i said i presented facts on LD
in case u missed the facts
LD can not beat someone ranked higher coz he is at the top
It is normal for top player to lose to someone ranked close to him.
LD beat TH twice already in the same week of Dec 2006 AG
LD had won more titles and more opens than TH
TH only edge on LD is the debateable prestige of AG's
Where are your facts??

I agree, that is why I said it's just a matter of opinion. Personally I think the AG has a certain amount of prestige. But hey that's just me :) (and others, but not everyone - and that's fair enough). I'm not going to go into "why" for yet another thread. That will only lead to people telling me why I'm "wrong". And I can't really be bothered with that. Commonwealth? Clearly not... But who really DOES consider the Commonwealth Games prestigious :p...

Would you consider a tournament "prestigious" without the presence of Gade, T. Rasmussen and all the other European/Commonwealth players participating?
Would you consider a tournament "prestigious" without the presence of LinDan, Taufik, LCW and all the other Asian players (yes, i know they make up the majority of the top players) participating?
If the answer to both is other than a "Yes", then that's the whole point on the discussion on whether we should include the AG and Commonwealth Games along with the AE, WC and Olympics.

Tine Rasmussen doesn't play Mens Singles I'm afraid :). "All the others" doesn't cut it for me. Gade is the only one I'd bother mentioning as a title contender. Maybe I'm not being too clear. No I don't think it should be included alongside the AE, WC and OG. But I don't think it should be ignored as a major achievement.
Anyway the important thing is... I'm not trying to convince anyone to change their mind. There are those that do consider it to be a major tournament and those that don't. It's just the way I see it.
