Tommy are you returning to this part of the world for a change? :p

Surely you need not rely on FedEx to transport you over? Maybe BA can give a special concession to all British supporters. :)

I suppose Andrew Smith will take part and you should support him all the way to Singapore! :p BTW AS seems to be quite a frequent visitor to Asia and you should keep up with him! ;)

I was at the Esplanade Theatre last night to watch the opening of the Broadway musical "Cats" and took the opportunity to buy an Early Bird Premium Season ticket for a total of $53. It is Free Seating within Blk A11 - A17, not a specific seat number.

The match schedule in June 2009 is as follows:

Wed 10 - Preliminary 9 am
Thu 11 - Preliminary 2 pm
Fri 12 - Quarter Finals 3 pm
Sat 13 - Semi Finals 2 pm
Sun 14 - Finals 1 pm

I suppose the Qualifications will be held on Tues 9 and is normally free of charge.

The Premium Seats are close to the courts and last year, the VIP pass holders also occupy these seats.

I hope most of the world class field will be here. Tournaments in June/July timeframe normally don't get full top class field following the euphoria of the Thomas/Uber/Sudirman Cups and the "hibernation period" before World Championships/Olympic Games.

if you do not wish to stay in geylang, there are budget hotels (hotel81/fragrance) at eunos/lavender area. you could take public transport from these areas to the singapore indoor stadium.

There are now many clean, well designed ,well located backpacker style places, with easy internet access, in Spore.Try www.g4station.com (http://www.g4station.com) .They quoted S$206 for a 7-day stay but it's 8-bed dorm sharing. It's 5 mins from the MRT station and many bus options to the stadium.Check others. You are now spoilt for choice.

Geylang in Singapore is such a popular place that they even have a song
specially written in its honour:

Geylang Sipaku Geylang

Geylang, sipaku Geylang, Geylang, si rama rama.
Pulang, marilah pulang, marilah pulang bersama-sama.
Mari pulang, marilah pulang, marilah pulang bersama-sama.

Kalu ada si jarom di patah, janganlah simpan di dalam peti.
Kalu ada silap dan salah, janganlah simpan di dalam peti.
Kalu ada silap dan salah, janganlah simpan di dalam peti.

Geylang, sipaku Geylang (Geylang!), Geylang, si rama rama.
Pulang, marilah pulang, marilah pulang bersama-sama.
Mari pulang, marilah pulang, marilah pulang bersama-sama.

Kalu ada sumor di ladang, boleh kita bertumpang mandi.
Kalu ada umur yang panjang, bolehlah kita berjumpa lagi.
Kalu ada umur yang panjang, bolehlah kita berjumpa lagi.

Geylang, sipaku Geylang (Geylang!), Geylang, si rama rama.
Pulang, marilah pulang, marilah pulang bersama-sama.
Mari Pulang, marilah pulang, marilah pulang bersama-sama

Maybe someone can do a translation of the above Malay version. :)

BTW is there a meaning for 'si'?

Now how do we associate nails and ferns with Geylang?

yes indeed paku is nail ....well to make it short it's about butterfly, return to home...hmmm...........well Indonesia uses Bahasa Baku which is 1 type of malay just like Bahasa Melayu but in Malaysia , the Malay we use for e.g..., kau dah makan? kecoh la lu & etc...while the proper way to speak is Awak sudah Makan...

Rudy is right. The right word for the song is "gelang", nothing to do with Geylang.

Hey they should play this song in 'the Little Nonya' instead of the Burung kakak tua song. :D Too bad the venue was in Malacca instead of Geylang, Singapore.

From peranakan.org.sg

For the bolded refrain:

Geylang like nail
Geylang the butterfly
Go home, lets go home..
Lets go home together
Go home, lets go home..
Lets go home together

Thanks for the translation. :D

I just wonder why the composer should equate "Geylang like nails", instead of
"like ferns" since butterfly and ferns are better suited for each other.
Indeed Geyland is full of Lady Butterflies. Nails are too sharp, cold and hard! Or could it be that Lady Butterflies have to face the harsh realities of Geylang for a living? :(

"Butterfly, go home...
Go home to the ferns
Lets all go home together..." :p

To ALL OUR DEAR FRIENDS from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Australia and overseas, especially one Rudy from US, we welcome you to the Aviva Open Singapore this June.

And it seems China's best players, who were absent last year to prepare for the Beijing Olympics will not miss this Singapore Open.

And if Lin Dan comes to challenge LCW et all, it will be a spectacle not to be missed!

Unfortunately, Aviva has still not decided whether to continue to sponsor this SS tournament for next year...

First Asia, then the world. China's Li Ning Group plan to take badminton world by storm, one step at a time.

FEW will forget the sight of Li Ning "walking on air" at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Suspended by wires, the 1984 Olympic triple gold medallist lit the cauldron at the Bird's Nest Stadium to open the world's biggest multi-sports event.

Today, the man voted one of China's greatest athletes of the 20th century is chairman of the Li Ning Group, one of the leading sports brand enterprises in the country.

The company hope to go international, starting with South-east Asia, and Singapore. They have already made their first move.

For a start, Li Ning Sports Singapore have located their first regional office here and are now the equipment sponsors for the Aviva Open Singapore 2009, a badminton tournament that is part of the Super Series calendar.

The official launch of the tournament was held yesterday, and speaking at the event, Li Ning Sports Singapore's South-east Asia general manager, Vivien Lim, said: "In China, badminton is the No 3 most popular sport, and in Singapore, it's No 5. There's a big opportunity to grow the business and go out of China, and Singapore offers the stability and infrastructure in the region.

"We are also looking at a title sponsorship of $8 to $9 million for a three to four year deal for the Singapore Open, and are currently in discussions. Our focus is on badminton, and we are also sponsors for the Asian Satellite and Youth International this year."

Li Ning's one-year deal with the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) is estimated at between $100,000 to $200,000. Aviva's contract for title sponsorship of the tournament ends this year and Li Ning are keen to take over.

The Li Ning Group in China have over 6,000 directly-managed and franchise retail stores. The group revenue last year was 6.69 billion yuan ($1.45 billion), a 53.8-per-cent jump from 2007.

The Beijing-based company's expansion plan will focus on the group's licensing, distribution and franchising business. Li Ning are eyeing a retail store here and in Malaysia this year.

"South-east Asia is the right place to expand the business, and in five years' time, we want to expand to Europe and the United States," said Lim. "The forecast is to become one of the top five world sports brand by 2018."

TODAY understands that Li Ning are also in discussions with the Singapore Table Tennis Association to sponsor the national team's attire and equipment next year.

Paddlers like Li Jiawei and Feng Tianwei would join the company's stable of stars, which includes Olympic and world pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva, and the NBA's Shaquille O'Neal and Baron Davis.

Part of the Badminton World Federation's 12-leg Super Series tournament, the Aviva Open Singapore 2009 will be held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium from June 9 to 14.

Good one, Oldhand ...... :D No doubt you are partially right, on your age and white mouse vision part ......:p

I found that for the purpose of watching badminton, elevation is much more important than a hawk's eyes. Easier to spot "enhanced" line-judging and great shot angles not seen from an almost level position.

Olympic medalists and Super Series title-holders have confirmed their attendance at the Aviva Open Singapore 2009.

The best in the game of badminton will be arriving in Singapore from 9 to 14 June 2009 to play in one of the most important events in the badminton calendar.

Current reigning queen of women's badminton, Tine Rasmussen from Denmark, will also be arriving in Singapore for the event hoping to take home her third title in 2009 after winning the Malaysia Open and Korea Open. She will find competition from a familiar opponent Wang Yihan, the young player from China who beat her to take home the All England Super Series 2009 title. Zhou Mi from Hong Kong and Xie Xingfang from China will also be amongst the contenders for the women's singles title at the Aviva Open Singapore 2009.

World number one Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia has confirmed that he will be returning to Singapore to defend his men's singles title and he will face stiff competition from other prolific shuttlers such as Peter Gade from Denmark, Sony Dwi Kuncoro from Indonesia and Chen Jin from China.

A whole host of medalists from the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will also be competing at the Aviva Open Singapore 2009 in hopes of continuing their reign at the top of the sport. Men's doubles gold medalists Hendra Setiawan and Markis Kido will be joined by women's doubles gold medalists Du Jing and Yu Yang from China. The Korean mixed doubles gold medalists at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Lee Yong Dae and Lee Hyo Jung will be joined by the pair from Indonesia Nova Widianto and Lilyana Natsir.

Singapore will be sending its entire national team to try to qualify for the tournament including Derek Wong, Ashton Chen, Xing Aiying, Hendra Wijaya, Hendri Kurniawan Saputra, Shinta Mulia Sari, Yao Lei and Li Yujia. Xing Aiying was a quarter-finalist in the Aviva Open Singapore last year and will be returning this year to try and improve on her performance. Fresh off her World Junior triumph in women's doubles, Yao Lei will also be looking to put her best foot forward at the event. Men's doubles finalists at the Indian Open, Hendra and Hendri, will also join forces again at the Aviva Open Singapore 2009 and take on some of the world's most formidable duos.

Chairman of the Aviva Open Singapore's Organizing Committee, Mr Ng Yoke Weng, said, "This year we have the cream of the crop playing against each other at the event with medalists from the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games competing in every category. I am sure this will be a great tournament and everyone will have a fantastic time catching the world class action at the Singapore Indoor Stadium."

Mr Ng, who is also the Vice-President of the Singapore Badminton Association, added, "The Aviva Open Singapore 2009 is a very significant event on the local badminton calendar because it is a platform for our local players to gain invaluable experience playing against the top players in the world. Watching the best shuttlers pit their skills against each other will also inspire the team of budding players who will be working hard for the Youth Olympic Games in 2010."

Aviva's CEO Mr Shaun Meadows also expressed his excitement in welcoming the international shuttlers to the event, "Aviva is dedicated to making the event a great one for all those involved. Having stars of the badminton world playing at the Aviva Open Singapore 2009 will promise exhilarating action displaying speed, precision and agility, which are values Aviva stand by. We hope that everyone from the players to the spectators will have a magnificent time and soak in the great atmosphere at the Aviva Open Singapore."

To date, more than 220 top international shuttlers from about 26 countries have signed up to take part in the tournament across five categories including, Men's Singles, Women's Singles, Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Besides the lucrative prize money, the shuttlers will also be playing to gather precious points in the Super Series event that will count towards their world rankings. The Aviva Open Singapore is organised by the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA), sponsored by Aviva and sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

If LD does not come to Singapore....it corroborates my "theory" that LD is afraid of playing in countries of tropical countries (SIngapore, Malaysia, Ina) - especially Southeast Asia.

No Lin Dan and Chong Wei title showdown in Lion City

KUANTAN: Badminton fans can forget about another title showdown between world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei and China’s Lin Dan in the men’s singles event at the Singapore Open from June 9-14.

Lin Dan, who is selective of his tournaments, has chosen to skip the Super Series event.

Just two weeks ago, Lin Dan showed that he was still better than Chong Wei by beating the Malaysian in the semi-final tie of the Sudirman Cup in Guangzhou.

Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat is also missing from the cast for the Singapore Open based on the qualifiers’ list released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

In the absence of these two players, Chong Wei will have to fend off challenges of a select few – Peter Gade-Christensen of Denmark; China’s Chen Jin and Bao Chunlai; Indonesia’s Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Simon Santoso; and South Korea Park Sung-hwan – as he seeks to defend the title.

The other events have attracted the world’s best players.

So, are we going to see Li Ning booths instead of Yonex ones this year?

But I won't dare to buy Li Ning shirts, after looking at the Chinese players' accumulated sweat in Guangzhou.

I'll buy only if it's <S$10. From the looks of it, very very unlikely :p:p. Do they usually have a lelong lelong closing sale like the pasar malam?

Must use cane and whip them lah.

Once complacency sets in it'll take years to rebuild. I notice the they are heavy also. ;)
A good excuse not to retain the title perhaps. ;)

ZAKRY Latif was supposed to hit the gym after last week's Pahang Open but fitness has taken a back seat as he is busy representing the Negri Sembilan Foundation in the ongoing Inter-Foundation Games in Kuantan.
This has got national doubles coach Rexy Mainaky worried as he feels Zakry will not have enough time to shape up for the Indonesia Open on June 16-21.

Zakry and partner Tazary Fairuzizuan, the World No 5 pair, are hoping to retain their Indonesia Open title in Jakarta.

"I wanted Zakry to work on his fitness after the Pahang Open. However, I can't do anything about it but wait for his return from Kuantan on Friday," said Rexy yesterday.

"I couldn't do much but to let him play in the Games as he has commitments with the Negri Foundation. I want him to train harder when he returns."

Rexy has not been happy with Zakry's form since the All England and Swiss Open in March.

The pair's slump started when they lost to South Korea's Han Sang Hoon-Hwang Ji Man in the quarter-finals of the All England, and a week later, were shown the exit in the first round of the Swiss Open by Japan's Shuichi Sakamoto-Shintaro Ikeda.

Those defeats prompted Rexy to issue an ultimatum to the pair to either shape up or risk being dropped from future tournaments.

The rumour is that Zakry has not been attending fitness training which forced the BA of Malaysia (BAM), two weeks ago, to drop the duo from defending their Singapore Open title next week.

Zakry-Fairuzizuan, however, answered their critics with a near-perfect performance to bag last week's Pahang Open doubles title.

"I initially did not name them for Singapore because of their form and fitness. Though they have improved slightly, it's still not good enough," Rexy added.

The squad leave for Singapore on Saturday.

Indonesia's female badminton players are shouldering high expectations of improving their performance from last year when they take part in this year's Singaporean Open, starting next Tuesday.

Women's doubles pairs Shendy Puspa Irawati/Meiliana Jauhari and Greysia Polii/Nitya Krishinda had to be content with a quarterfinal finish in last year's event.

Coach Aryono Miranat blamed the poor performance on the players' lack of international experience.

"I have to admit our senior women's doubles players have limited tournament experience, so their game hasn't matured yet," he told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

"The more tournaments a shuttler joins, the more mature their performance will be. That is what our women's doubles players lack; but hopefully they can improve in the Singapore Open."

Maturity in playing entails their ability to create strategies when countering opponents; scoring points in critical situations, as well as minimizing errors, said Aryono.

He said these were the improvements he expected of his two pairs.

World No. 7 Shendy/Meiliana and world No. 19 Greysia/Nitya will part of the Indonesian contingent heading to Singapore and looking to recover from their failure in last month's Sudirman Cup.

"Regardless of the tough target, we must go for it," Aryono said.

Indonesia also has an outside chance in the women's singles, with coach Marleve Mainaky expecting at least a semifinal finish for Adriyanti Firdasari. Mixed doubles coach Ri chard Mainaky is making the tournament, which runs from June 9 to 14, as a tryout for the country's top-ranked mixed doubles pair Nova Widianto and Liliyana Natsir.

The world No. 1 pair is focusing on the defense of the world championship in India on Aug. 10-16.

"The Singapore Open and the Indonesian Open *from June 14-21* will be testing grounds for them to create a whole new playing pattern," Richard said recently.

He added if the Beijing Olympic Games silver medalists did not do well before the World Championship, they might not continue as a pair in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

The mixed doubles second-stringers Devin Lahardi/Lita Nurlita, champions in last year's Taiwan Open Gold Grand Prix, will be the second mixed pair in Singapore.

Indonesia will also send Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan, Rian Sukmawan/Yonatan Suryatama and Bona Septano/Muhammad Ahsan in the men's doubles; and last year's finalist Simon Santoso and Sony Dwi Kuncoro in the men's singles.

I am not an insider in this kind of things but I would think that one of the "perks" of being a tournament sponsor is the right to setup booth selling merchandise.

I know from chatting with the badminton shops that Lining stuff will be available in Singapore and that conversation happened a few weeks ago.

From a business perspective, this is a great time to launch their product. Most badminton enthusiast will be going for the event and you have a large captive audience.

Given their extraordinary (and I'd say, ridiculous) pricing, Li Ning is unlikely to make off with too many captives from Singapore :o

And, of course, it won't be of much use to them if at least one of their mascots don't make it to the title ;)

There's Lining booth at the indoor stadium. However the stuff there are very expensive. Racquets range from $99 - $329 and that's for the professional series. The ones that are used by the China national team cost more than $400 with the model used by Lin Dan costing $489 !

The shuttlecocks are really too expensive, it cost S$57 ! I think the shoes on the other hand is at least more acceptable, I saw one that goes for S$99 and it is very light. My Victor cost me S$90 and I wouldn't mind paying S$9 for the Lining.

I repeat my argument that this is just a overpriced China product pretending to be a global brand. They appear to believe that starting off with 'expensive' price-tags will earn them a spot alongside the dollar-brands like Nike, Reebok and Converse.

Such pricing is unlikely to result in booming sales.
But, perhaps, they don't want booming sales rightaway.

With government-aided deep pockets, Li Ning can afford to do this.
The question is: for how long?

The 22 year-old two-time national champion failed to drop a game in his two group matches before twice coming from behind to beat Estonia's Raul Must, the world No 48, in the final 21-19, 22-20.

Ouseph, a former European junior champion now regarded as one of Badminton England's leading hopes for London 2012, won the Volant D'Or in Toulouse last weekend, adding to his Open victories in Scotland, Ireland and Canada since the end of November

Ouseph's purple patch has also seen him rise to a career best world No 30, as he bids to break into the top 20 in the build-up to the Olympics and overtake compatriot Andrew Smith, the current world No 22.

Ouseph joins England’s world No 22 Andrew Smith in the first round line-up in Singapore - but once again the luck of the draw has deserted the Malaysian-based Hampshire man as he has landed world No 1 and top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the first round.
