leanooi 03-11-2009, 10:59 PM Why would GWJ defeat of sho be on the upset list? GWJ beat Sho in the recent German Open by straight sets 21-15, 21-18.

Its only depends on their World Ranking..................;)..:)

eaglehelang 03-12-2009, 04:15 AM Why would GWJ defeat of sho be on the upset list? GWJ beat Sho in the recent German Open by straight sets 21-15, 21-18.
WR# 58 beat WR# 30, difference of 28 WR, Gong is also a qualifier who advanced to main draw of Swiss.
hcyong 03-12-2009, 05:56 AM 1)Round 1 : China’s XU Chen/Zhao Yunlei (WR# 38) beat Taiwan’s CHENG Wen Hsing/FANG Chieh Min (WR# 21), 21-19 21-15
Xu/Zhao has notional points of 46800 (use http://www.badmintoninternational.net/notionalcalculator/notcalculator.aspx to calculate) while Cheng/Fang has 31050 (http://www.internationalbadminton.org/ranking_ms.asp?id=5) WR points. If based purely on WR, then yes, it is an upset. But I can argue that Xu/Zhao has a very high notional rank, so it was not an upset.
It's like KKK/Fairuz has no WR at all, but a very high notional rank, which is much more realistic.
eaglehelang 03-12-2009, 06:24 AM 1)Round 1 : China’s XU Chen/Zhao Yunlei (WR# 38) beat Taiwan’s CHENG Wen Hsing/FANG Chieh Min (WR# 21), 21-19 21-15

Xu Chen/Zaho Yunlei arent exactly a new pair. They won a GP Gold title in 2008 (either Macau or Taiwan I forgot). Does the notional points take into account the latest tourneys, as of last week?
Notional points for just "unranked" pairs or new partnerships would perhaps be better.
In any case, if you want to do the notional points, by all means - can do for the MD, WD, XD dept & post. :D:p

It's under "Others", look at no 3 ;).
suetyan 03-13-2009, 05:22 AM It's predicted...
it is not predicted, because it is a 50-50 match. Moreover, WYH's ranking is much more lower than WL.
eaglehelang 03-13-2009, 05:26 AM Added 1 more for XD :
XD
1)Round 1 : China’s XU Chen/Zhao Yunlei (WR# 30) beat Taiwan’s CHENG Wen Hsing/FANG Chieh Min (WR# 21), 21-19 21-15
2)Round 1 : Taiwan’s CHIEN Yu Chin/HSIEH Yu Hsin (WR# 19) beat Scotland/England’s BANKIER Imogen/BLAIR ~ Robert (WR# 9, 6th seed), 19-21 22-20 21-13

4)Round 2 : China’s XU Chen/Zhao Yunlei (WR# 30) beat England’s CLARK Anthony /KELLOGG Donna (WR# 4, 4th seed), 21-7 21-13
5)Round 2 : Msia’s Mohd Fairuzizuan/Wong Pei Tty (unranked, new partnership) beat Taiwan’s CHIEN Yu Chin/HSIEH Yu Hsin (WR# 19), 21-19 12-21 21-15
eaglehelang 03-13-2009, 05:27 AM it is not predicted, because it is a 50-50 match. Moreover, WYH's ranking is much more lower than WL.
Look again, WR# 11 beat WR# 7, only 4 WR difference. Remember W Yihan won AE last week.
robin7 03-13-2009, 11:33 AM Looks like there is another confusion here:
Since the WR is updated on every Thursday, results on round 1 (Wed) is based on the old WR but round 2 onwards (Thu-Sun) is according to the latest WR.
The argument will be: The same WR (the ones before Thu) should be used.
Therefore, WYH was ranked #17 before Mar 12th (Thu) and #11 after Mar 12th.
Since the draw is made based on the old WR, the old WR should be used throughout the entire tournament.
Another solution is to ask BWF to update the WR on every Monday. I have written to the BWF regarding to this issue a few months ago and their reply was that they are not working on weekends and they need a few days to update the WR. **Fainted**
Note: WR=World Rankings
jutawin 03-13-2009, 11:40 AM Upset of the day should be NW/LN lost
robin7 03-13-2009, 11:53 AM Another expected upset should be Yihan WANG http://static.tournamentsoftware.com/images/flags/CHN.gif over http://static.tournamentsoftware.com/images/flags/HKG.gif Mi ZHOU [2] :p

Errrr, I already updated the whole list according to latest WR, including Round 1 results. That's what we've doing all the while for every tourney, since last year.
;)
Haha, maybe BCers should apply to be in charge of the WR.

chris-ccc 03-15-2009, 03:38 AM .
After reading our Upset Lists over the last 3 tournaments (thanking eaglehelang and limsy for compiling them), it is evident that China’s Wang Yihan (WR#11) and Gong Weijie (WR# 49) should continue to cause more upsets from now on, until they have made their way into the Top 8 World Rankings.
Well Done WYH and GWJ !!! :):):)
"Giants Killers": I would call them.

haha, She also shocked that her WR has shot up to 11, she said so fast become 11?? she said it is not easy for her to climb up to 11:D hope she can become world no 1 in the future :D
robin7 03-15-2009, 05:31 AM It is evident that China’s Wang Yihan (WR#11) and Gong Weijie (WR# 49) should continue to cause more upsets from now on, until they have made their way into the Top 8 World Rankings.
Well Done WYH and GWJ !!! :):):)
"Giants Killers": I would call them.
Some players will cause some upsets but never win a title while some will go all the way. Obviously GWJ is the former and WYH is the latter. With LD, BCL & CJ still playing, GWJ will have to wait a "little" longer. WYH, on the other hand, will be CHN WS#1 by end of this year in my opinion.
chris-ccc 03-15-2009, 05:41 AM WYH, on the other hand, will be CHN WS#1 by end of this year in my opinion.
.
Totally agree... WYH has great potential to be the next CHN's WS No.1.
And suetyan would be most delighted when this happens. :):):)

XD had the most no of upsets, 4 from the eventual winners ZB/Ma Jin. Interestingly, the seeded pairs (WR# 1 to 5 especially) did not win this Swiss SS. ZB/Ma Jin came back strong from the meltdown last week.
Congrats to Wang Yi Han for winning back to back SS titles, a stronger signal of the new generation of China’s WS to take over from the likes of XXF, Lu Lan, Zhu Lin.
Upsets of WR difference above 5, this time is from main draw, Round 1 onwards :
MS = 4
WS = 7
MD = 5
WD = 0
XD = 10, total of 27 upsets
Others = 7
Since Limsy says he wants to retire from this task :p, the next round of upset lists will be done as & went I have time. So, GP Gold events are a maybe, Cherios.

LCW = WR#1, LD = WR#2, so technically not upset or even "others" category ;)

Yes technically not but still a lot of people still considered LD was always better than LCW :)

koo_fan 03-15-2009, 01:27 PM Let's just say no exact judgement on whether it's upset or not.
Choose - stick to Rankings or Expectations?
