2011 Sudirman Cup Playing System
1. STRUCTURE
1.1 "Division" System with 16 Teams in each of Divisions except the last Division.
1.2 The 1st Division is also the Championship Division.
1.3 In each of Divisions there will be 4 Groups of 4 Teams except the last Division.
1.4 The last Division will be comprised of all the rest of the teams divided in groups after the final entry is known, to maximize the number of matches played by each team
2. PLAYING SYSTEM
2.1 In each of Divisions except the last Division the playing system will be identical.
2.2 Each group of 4 Teams shall play a complete Round-Robin (3 matches per team).
2.3 SPECIAL CONSIDERATION: The order of play and the scheduling of the matches must be prepared in such a way as to avoid, whenever possible, the possibility of "pre-determining" results. All final round matches, as feasibly possible, must be significant for each competing team.
2.4 Following the complete Round Robin in each group, the winners of each group (4 teams) will move directly into the Quarter Finals round (they have a bye in the Round of 16 - See diagram) and seeded accordingly (Winner of Group "A" seeded 1st, winner of Group "B" seeded 2nd, winners of Groups "C" and "D" drawn in positions 3 and 4).
2.5 The teams finishing 2nd in their group will be drawn randomly into the Round of 16 first (see diagram).
2.6 The teams finishing 3rd in their group will be drawn randomly into the Round of 16 next (see diagram).
2.7 The teams finishing 4th in their group (4 teams) will be play-off for positions 13 to 16.
2.8 The play-off rounds (final draws) will be played according to the "progressive knock-out" system to determine all the final positions in order from 1 to 12 and from 13 to 16 (2nd Division: 17-28 and 29-32, 3rd Division: 33-44and 45-48 etc.).
2.9 In the last Division, depending on the total number of entered teams, the teams will be divided in groups (number of groups to be determined after the closing date for entry) in order to provide sufficient number of matches to each team. The teams would play first in groups and then a progressive knockout system to determine all the positions. Every effort will be made to provide as many matches as possible per team.
2.10 The World Champion team could play a maximum of 7 matches and a minimum of 6 matches.
2.11 In the 1st Divisions all teams are guaranteed at least 4 matches, but most teams will play 5or 6 matches. In the 2nd and 3rd etc. Divisions most teams will play 5-6 matches, only teams with a “Bye” in the round of 16 in the division may have 4-6 matches, 4th Teams in each group will play 4-5matches.
2.12 No. 1 overall (winner of 1st Division) shall be the World Champion.
2.13 In 1st Division the winning team shall receive gold medals, the losing finalist silver medals and the 2 losing semi-finalists bronze medals.
2.14 In 2nd and 3rd Divisions etc. winning teams (Division Champions No. 17 and 33 etc.) shall be given medals or awards.
2.15 A special award shall be given to the winning team of the last Division.
3. SEEDING and RANKING
