View Full Version : Ratchanok Inthanon - Thai rising star

After "witnessing" her success at the just concluded Ciputra Hanoi Vietnam International Challenge, I thought this Thai sensation deserves a thread.
Ratchanok Inthanon, at the tender year of 16 (I don't think she's 14 as some of us claimed) and ranked at 131th before the tournament, won her first international title in her senior tour without dropping a single game beating 4 Indonesians on her way to the title.
Major Achievements:
2007: Cheers Youth International (http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50890) - GS and GD winners (U-15)
2008: Yonex-Sunrise Badminton Asia Youth U-16 (http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58676) - GS winner
2009: Ciputra Hanoi Vietnam International Challenge (http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68318) - WS winner

I watched her play in the Cheers Youth 2007 and Asian Satellite 2008 tournaments held in Singapore. She has great fighting spirit and a 'never-say-die' attitude, qualities which I find lacking in our Singapore players.
Here are a few photos which I took of Ratchanok Inthanon in the Asian Satellite 2008 tournament:

actually i am not sure she is 14yearsold but anyhow it is immaterial as on record she is. Like most China JR they look older but they can still play bcoz records shows that they are that age.
Actually what counts is when they are much older-can they perform. As at now iam not sure she is the rising star yet.

Whether she will go on and make the grade and be a future champion is still a long way off. Yes, she won the WJ WS title but I still say the odds are against her. Physique wise, I hope she can add a couple more inches to her height. I dont know her exact height now, but if I look at her peers in the Chinese camp, I must say she is short.
Being young, her coaches/trainers have some time to work on her stamina and her technical side, but she needs the height or else she will be at a disadvantage.

At her age of only 14, the future looks bright for Ratchanok.

Ratchanok could (and should) win 5 titles in a row, which would be a record that no one would ever break.
Axelsen could win the WJC 2 more times, though he won't make it so easily as Ratchanok due to having more resistance in the BS.
Now if they were to get together and have a child in the future, that would be a born champion.;)

..imo, Ratchanok will be the one to watch, in her age group, for 2016 OG (she might spring a surprise in 2012 at 17 y.o. but don't think it's her time yet)..She'll be only 21 yrs old by 2016 and God only knows how good she'll be if she keeps on improving and be consistent; right now, for her age, she is so good, it's not even silly..I think her only weaknesses are, if i can categorize them, her stamina and lack of international matches against the world's top players. In her age group, no doubt she's da queen. Hopefully she doesn't burn out or reach a peak plateau before then..

As we have said about WZM we need to be cautious about young players, a quick look at players who have won multiple WJC........is patchy, and the vast majority of winners haven't translated WJC intoWC.

The difference between Ratchanok and Wang Zhengming is that the THA girl already has some experience of senior-year badminton in the past 2 years, while also playing in the junior circuit. On the other hand, Wang has hardly tasted senior badminton since his win at the 2008 WJC.

After "witnessing" her success at the just concluded Ciputra Hanoi Vietnam International Challenge, I thought this Thai sensation deserves a thread.
Wow, this thread was created 12 months ago.
At the age of 15, she has won 2 WJC singles champion in the span of 6 months (1/11/2009 to 25/4/2010) and she still has 2 more to go!
If she is qualified, she will be playing for her first OG at 17.

Hello,
I first look her play yesterday in Japan Open.
Vs LuLan , i think she fighted well. She looks like cute, and looks like playing happily.
but probably tired her footwork sometimes slowly and can not reach front.
because last day qualification she fighted long game defeated two Japanese.
Next time i can look at her, Next Japan Open she will be much stronger than this year.
I looking forward to see her again.

But let your heart not be troubled, as hopefully they'll have a chance to meet and beat each other up again in next yr's WJC; that time, it'll be held in TTY's hometurf (Taiwan)..

When I first saw Inthanon Ratchanok demolish Lydia Cheah Li Ya in the SEA Games final last year, I knew that she was going to be different from the rest. It is unfathomable to think that she cannot surpass the likes of Pi Hongyan, Eriko Hirose, Yao Jie or Julianne Schenk within two years. But I think true glory can only be achieved if she can break through to the top 3 or 4 in the world (namely the 3 Wangs and Jiang Yanjiao), as there seems to be a huge gap between the those few and the rest of the top 10. No offence to Tina Baun or Saina Nehwal. I hope she can grow taller within the next few years. Imagine a 1.79 m Inthanon Ratchanok! It will surely strike terror in the hearts of her opponents

And both Thailand's Women and Men's Teams have achieved success at the recent Guangzhou Asian Games as reported in Bangkok Post:
http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/206549/badminton-players-slam-their-way-to-medal-glory
GUANGZHOU : Thailand's badminton players put aside a simmering row with their sport's leaders and worked towards the common goal of winning medals for the country at the Asian Games yesterday.
The Thai women's badminton team took silver after losing to China 3-0 in the final of the team event yesterday, while their male compatriots took bronze a day earlier in the men's team event.
While the two squads failed to win gold, their achievements are a huge success for Thai badminton.
The women's team reached the final for the first time in 44 years, while the men knocked out Malaysia, (Boonsak bt LCW 9-21, 21-10, 21-19 in Team event) featuring world number one Lee Chong Wei, in the quarter-finals.
The shuttlers achieved the feat after burying the hatchetwith Thailand's badminton bosses over sponsorship and financial issues.
Several national team players, led by siblings Boonsak and Salakjit Ponsana, were in conflict with Charoen Wattanasin, president of the Badmintion Association of Thailand, earlier this year which had cast a pall over Thailand's preparations.
Coach Somphol Kukasemkit gave credit to Khunying Patthama Leesawattrakul, who was appointed team manager just before the Asiad, for helping to mend fences between the players and the association.
"She has played a vital role in our success," said Somphol.
And Ratchanok was in the Guangzhou AG team as reported in People's Daily Online:

"Another Thai badminton rising star is 15-year-old Ratchanok Inthanon. Ratchanok won the Badminton World Federation World Junior Championships two years in a row for women's singles and became the youngest-ever champion -- 14 years old last year -- at the world junior tournament last.
Participating in the Asian Games for the first time, Ratchanok said for now she was not 100 percent ready for the Games as her physical condition is not yet perfect -- She still carries some injuries, which, however, failed to weaken her confidence.
"If I can recover on time, I will try my best to win a gold medal."
The teenager rising star added that it would be her first time to China, so if she lost in the first several rounds, she would take the rest of her time in China to travel across the country. But she is seen to have a big chance to get to the final round."

I think Inthanon is a complete player. She is powerful, has a repertoire of match-winning shots, her selection of shots is good, and she disguises her shots well. It is as if she decides what shot to play right at the last minute, just before hitting the shuttle. I suppose her opponent cannot read her body language if she herself does not know what she is going to do. So there is less time for her opponent to react. It probably helps that she has a strong wrist, so she is able to change a dropshot to a lob without needing much follow through. I'm surprised that she lost rather tamely to Wang Shixian today. Maybe it is a lack of confidence, or she may be taking things slowly. But she appeared to be sick. In my opinion, her court coverage isn't inferior to Wang Shixian, and she has got more power. Your avatar looks really familiar. You pretending to be someone :)?

...
..Ratchanok is still raw & full of talent. But, imo, Ratchanok's current play is at least 1 level below WSX (or maybe even Saina) and really it's not a surprise considering her age and level of experience. It's a combo of things that is putting Ratchanok behind the ball and in this case, she seemed to lose tamely to WSX. As a comparison, it took Saina a couple or so yrs to finally able to challenge and beat a player the caliber of WSX.

I agree that Inthanon is a complete player. Right now, it's only her lack of experience in participating in SS tournaments that she needs to acquire.

I just realised that her surname is Inthanon, and not Ratchanok. Anyway, I don't think she will want to miss all the fun. There are altogether 59 Thais in this large contingent. Haha, I join Bruce in thanking you for bringing back some happy memories. :)
RI somehow did not strike me then as so "powerful" as she turns out to be now. She was indeed very "tiny" and of course that was some three years ago when she was 12 years old! :p
That's one reason why I would try to turn up to see her in action and perhaps take a photo with her. Hope its all right with limsy. ;)
BTW the venue then was the old and historical SBA Hall at Guillimard Rd where most of the local tournaments were held, but now it is unavailable and leased out as a food court, I think. Hopefully, the new indoor stadium at the new Kallang Sports Hub now being built will be the next badminton venue.

Yes, back then it was not easy to predict that she will have made such an impact. I wonder if she knew, when she made the decision to participate, that the venue which holds memories of her childhood victories (I mean earlier childhood) no longer exists.

Compare the pics taken in December 2007 and those that I am presenting to you now on her action during the recent Li Ning S'pore Youth Int'l, you will observe that RI looks vastly different though she is merely 15 now.
Taller, prettier and stronger she now gives tips to her doubles partner and why not with her greater exposure to the international arena? :p
She will continue to impress us at the world stage and will be the darling of THAILAND badminton. With Saina Nehwal and possibly a few other girls, Ratchanok will be among the limited numbers who can punch a hole into the Great Wall of China. :D

Very impressive match last evening. She totally dominated SN. It's probably not SN's best game but all credits to RI for seizing the initiative early. I see RI using more power play, moves to take the shuttle very early and is not afraid to use the net area.

Inthanon just wants the good things in life for her parents
JAKARTA: A dream to provide a comfortable life for her parents has driven Thailand’s Inthanon Ratchanok to break all kinds of barriers in badminton.
The 16-year-old Inthanon created history in Taiwan last month when she became the first shuttler to win the world junior girls’ singles title three years in a row – and she is still eligible to play in two more championships. But right now, her focus is on becoming badminton’s youngest medallist at the next year’s Olympic Games in London.
Indonesia’s Mia Audina was the youngest to compete in the Olympics – at Atlanta 1996 when she was 16 years and 338 days old – but she did not win a medal.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2011/11/15/seagames/s_pg66inthanon.jpgCrucial win: Thailand’s Intanon Ratchanok clenching her fist after defeating Indonesia’s Adrianti Firdasari in the team final in Jakarta Monday.
With her strong will, anything is possible for Inthanon.
“I want my parents to have their own house and a car. I want to give them a better life. They have never owned anything. If I win a medal at the Olympics, I will be able to provide them with all these,” said Inthanon, who was introduced to badminton at a very young age.
This was only because her parents, working as helpers and cleaners at the Banthongyod Badminton School in Bangkok, would place her at one corner of the courts while they went about their business.
She basically grew up watching her parents toiling for a living and picked up what she knew best – badminton. She was a natural at it.
She was enrolled at the badminton school for free when she was just six years old so that her parents could keep an eye on her.
She immediately made them proud by winning her first junior title at seven and has never looked back.
Now, ranked 13th in the world, she has already beaten the likes of Tine Rasmussen, Saina Nehwal and Sung Ji-hyun – the top players of Denmark, India and South Korea respectively.
“It will be awesome to win a medal of any colour at the Olympic Games. It’s hard work but that is something I am used to,” she said.
Here, in Jakarta, Inthanon is again making heads turn.
Yesterday, the super fit Thai played brilliantly to beat 2007 SEA Games champion Adrianti Firdasari 20-22, 21-19, 21-19 in the second singles to inspire Thailand to a 3-1 win over fancied Indonesia in a four-and-a half-hour team final at the Istora Bung Karno Stadium.
Her crucial victory put Thailand 2-1 up.
Earlier, Porntip Buranaprasertsuk had drawn first blood with a 17-21, 21-11, 21-16 win over Linda Wenifanetri while Anneke Feinya Agustine-NityaKrishinda Maheswari levelled the score with a 22-20, 21-9 win over A. Duan-ganong-V. Kunchala.
Inthanon’s success spurred Amitrapai Savitree-T. Saralee to fight tooth-and-nail in a cliff-hanger of a match for a 19-21, 21-16, 24-22 win over Vita Marissa-Lilyana Natsir.
Thailand last won the team title at Manila 2005.

Unfortunate error here. Mia won silver in Atlanta, losing to Bang Soo Hyun in the final.
.
At that time (1996), Mia looked so strong physically. :):):)
Ratchanok, although having great skill, speed and stamina, will need to build up her physical strength (more muscles), in order to have a better chance to win a medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

:D:D:D You are going to the extreme.
Think of Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan - Have muscles, but not heavy-weight muscles. We know the heavy-weight muscles will slow a player down.
RI only need to do more push-ups, sit-ups, etc, etc ......
