Sudirman Cup 2009 Day 4: May 13

Greetings,

Yesterday, Day 3, Tuesday 12-May-2009, Korea defeated Denmark 4-1.

Surprisingly, PG who was suffering from an attack of migraine during his match still managed to win the only point for Denmark. It's reported that he is now admitted to a hospital in Guangzhou. Hope that he can participate in 2 days' time.

For Matches Overview on Day 4 from tournamentsoftware.com: click here (http://www.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/matches.aspx?id=991DFE99-023B-4853-8AF6-39255247D465&d=20090513)

Interesting matches on Day 4 could be coming from Group 2, namely;
* Thailand vs Chinese Taipei
* Germany vs France

IMHO, Chinese Taipei and Germany can win.

Cheers... chris-ccc

Hi bradmyster,

You must have missed following Australia, India and Scotland at the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne, Australia.

India and Scotland are much stronger that Australia. Therefore, the results were no surprises.

Ukraine is one of the nations rising up rather quickly.
Therefore, on Day 4, Ukraine would probably defeat Australia too. :crying::crying::crying:

Should have been XD, WS & MD to Singapore thus clinching 12 PAW points, but the unconventional way works for me as well :p.

Could anybody explain the rule of tie-breaker in group 3A? thanks in advance

Ranking order in the sub-groups
5.5.1 If two teams have won the same number of ties, the ranking will be decided by the result of the tie between them.

5.5.2 If three or more teams have won the same number of ties, ranking will be decided by the total number of matches won. If this leaves two teams equal, ranking will be decided by the result of the tie between them.

5.5.3 If three or more teams have won the same number of ties and the same number of matches, ranking will be decided by the difference between total games won and total games lost, with greater difference ranked higher. If this leaves two teams equal, ranking will be decided by the result of the tie between them.

5.5.4 If three or more teams have won the same number of ties and the same number of matches and have the same difference between total games won and total games lost, ranking will be decided by the difference between total points won and total points lost, with greater difference ranked higher. If this leaves two teams equal, ranking will be decided by the result of the tie between them.

5.5.5 If three or more teams have won the same number of ties and the same number of matches, have the same difference between total games won and total games lost, and have the same difference between total points won and total points lost, ranking will be decided by drawing lots.

If 2 teams have won same number of ties, ranking will be decided by the result of the tie between them (BWF statutes, Part III, Section 4, article 5.5.1)

Bulgaria and USA both won 2 ties, Bulgaria beat USA 3-2, that's why Bulgaria topped the group. Hope I'm not wrong...

15-21, 21-16, 21-17 in 49 min. :D

I must say Derek Wong did very well to defeat the more experienced Eric Pang in MS 12-21, 21-19, 21-15 in 45 min, and this must have certainly given a big boost to our WD.

If SIN can score another point from the last XD match, this will be an immense confidence booster to local born Vanessa Neo. This XD tie is between Hendri Kurniawan Saputra/Vanessa Neo and Jorrit De Ruiter/Ilse Vaessen of NED.

The order of play favors THA. THA might win the first 3 matches. The first match XD will set the tone of the match but the 2 singles from TPE might surprise the Thais. Well, if it goes down to the last 2 doubles, TPE will come up on top.

MS Boonsak Ponsana vs Hsueh Hsuan Yi - This could be another upset

WS Salakjit Ponsana vs Chiang Pei Hsin

Not neccesarily. They could end up second place if Denmark or Malaysia win big.

I think HKG will get 2 pts today from Chan Yan Kit and Wang Chen. The other pt will be hard to get.....

Even if KOR loses 2-3 today and MAS beat DEN 3-2:
KOR W2 L1 Ties Won 9 Lost 6
MAS W2 L1 Ties Won 9 Lost 6

I think KOR will still edge out MAS as group winners. The only way for MAS to possibly emerge as group winners (will need to double check on the rules) is to beat DEN 4-1 or 5-0 and hope for KOR to lose today.

Aha yeah I went yesterday, it was quite amazing. I was really close to the players just like 2 rows behind. Didn't see Lin/Chong but it was great nonetheless. I was surprised it wasn't sold out, not even half filled it seemed. I was on the Switzerland vs. Lithuania and the India vs. scotland side. It was great though.

India create history in badminton
Guangzhou: India created history by breaking into the Group 2 of the Sudirman Cup badminton championships for the first time since the tournament started in 1989 after thrashing Bulgaria 3-0 in Group 3 play-off here on Thursday.

India had topped Group 3B with emphatic wins over Australia (4-1), Ukraine (5-0) and Scotland (5-0) and on Thursday they rolled over Group 3A toppers Bulgaria to promote themselves to Group 2 of the world mixed team championships.

The men’s doubles pair of Sanave Thomas and Rupesh Kumar began India’s victory march, taking just 28 minutes to tame Vladimir Metodiev and Yulian Hristov 21-13, 21-11.

Saina Nehwal then continued her unbeaten run in the championships with a 21-14, 21-17 victory over Linda Zetchiri in 36 minutes.

Arvind Bhatt, however, had to fight it out against Krasimir Yankov before clinching the match 16-21, 21-16, 21-19 in 58 minutes to give the tie to India.

The 3-0 lead meant that the women’s doubles duo of Aparna Balan and the mixed doubles pair of V. Diju and Jwala Gutta did not take field.

In the last edition in 2007, a depleted India lost to France in a play-off to remain in Group 3 but this time the strong team led by Saina Nehwal made it to the Group 2. (PTI)
