Sudirman Cup 2009 Day 5: May 14
Greetings,
Yesterday, Day 4, Wednesday 13-May-2009, was rather a quiet day.
But there were some unexpected results. Congratulations to these happy winners:
* Germany defeating France, 5-0
* Singapore defeating the Netherlands 4-1
* Portugal defeating Lithuania 3-2
Today, Day 5, there will be some great matches to follow: click here (http://www.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/matches.aspx?id=991DFE99-023B-4853-8AF6-39255247D465&d=20090514)
The stronger nations, China, Denmark, Indonesia and Malaysia, will all be on show.
Also, Play Offs will be commencing in Group 3. India will certainly be expected to top this group.

Yes, unfortunately I have to attend to my Badminton club session when the big matches are to be scheduled.
This thread is expected to be a long, long thread to read when I get home. ;););)

ctjcad 05-13-2009, 01:54 PM ..to see the INA squad empty their benches and play their younger players, knowing well they've secured a SF berth..
On the other hand, both DEN and MAS would want to play their top players in order to clinch a SF appearance..Literally, all five events could go either way and depending on the order of play, it could be decided by the last match..
Prepare the fireworks!!..

The only question for team Malaysia is how are they going to field the XD? I think it may be better to be conservative and let KKK and WPT play single event, that's MD and WD as these 2 events have good chance to bring in 1 to 2 points. Putting KKK and WPT in 2 events backfired before and should be avoided. Let the opponent beat us and don't beat ourself is my philosophy. Not sure I have the strength to stay up whole night for the MAS vs DEN.
limsy 05-13-2009, 03:36 PM well, looking forward the heavy weight match up:cool:
we will rock this thread:p
oh boy. 4am PDT. do i really need to be at work tomorrow?
hcpoirot 05-13-2009, 04:01 PM Malaysia-Denmark will be the one to watch. Its like do or die matches.
And Indonesia-China will be more relax.
jasonmarc 05-13-2009, 07:19 PM Its depends on if Tine could make it or not.........If Tine could not make it to GZ.....MAS have better chance to qualified to SF..cause mas MD and WD are not themselves in this tournament...........other wise...!!.....
As for the Migraine of PG.......It will make PG stronger and more determine to win against LCW....
badMania 05-13-2009, 07:36 PM As Chris mentioned, INA vs CHN will be an exhibition match (from INA's perspective). The strategy is to play all the remaining players brought to Guangzhou and thereby allowing them to earn valuable ranking pts for seeding purposes at the WC despite losing (esp for Rian/Yoke and Devin/Lita).
Likely lineup:
MD: Hendra Setiawan/Mohd Ahsan or Rian Sukmawan/Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki vs Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun -- this will be an interesting spectable if Hendra/Ahsan are fielded.
WS: Adriyanti Firdasari vs any player CHN field.
MS: Simon Santoso vs Chen Jin or Bao Chunlai
WD: Nitya Krishinda/Greysia Polii vs Du Jing/Yu Yang
XD: Devin Lahardi/Lita Nurlita vs Zheng Bo/Ma Jin or Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen
Except for the first match, all the other ties should be won by CHN.

Tine won't be there for sure from what I've read. Not even sure yet Gade will play. Chances are Jan Ø might have to step in but he says he's ready to go http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif:D.
samuel882 05-13-2009, 07:53 PM Knowing that INA won't be at their full force, CHN might as well rested their top guns too tonight.
BTW, Luis Pongoh did mentioned they will fielded their strongest line-ups and try to beat China to top the group and avoids KOREA in SF:D

This is very true. CHN has great confidence to defeat DEN, MAS or KOR at the SF.
Therefore, the result/outcome of today's CHN-INA match is of no importance to CHN, IMHO.

Tourney software puts the order of play as : MS, WS, MD, WD, XD
With WD playing just before XD, dont they'll field WPT. And MD as usual as 3rd match, too tiring also for KKK.
Unless they change the order with MD playing 1st, then KKK/NHL will be the combo for XD. If not, it'll have to be Fairuz/NHL.
X Ball 05-13-2009, 10:11 PM These players will win it for Malaysia today:
Winners:
1. LCW
2. WMC
3. EE Hui/WPT
I may be wrong but I am almost always right. :D
koo_fan 05-13-2009, 10:16 PM I'd be like it if kkk/tbh is added to the list and make it a win for Malaysia.
X Ball 05-13-2009, 10:20 PM I'd be like it if kkk/tbh is added to the list and make it a win for Malaysia.
I think their current form is not good enough to beat the Danes.
vching 05-13-2009, 10:20 PM I'd be like it if kkk/tbh is added to the list and make it a win for Malaysia.
Pfft... KKK/TBH...
pauline 05-13-2009, 10:40 PM The order of play is quite important la....especially the 3rd match.
vching 05-13-2009, 10:48 PM I don't know how the order of play is determined but during the last Sudirman Cup, they were drawn out of a hat (I think only for the finals). But if KKK or WPT are playing XD, I think the organisers would accomodate that.
ctjcad 05-13-2009, 10:56 PM As Chris mentioned, INA vs CHN will be an exhibition match (from INA's perspective).
...
..no, i did not mention it will be an exhibition tie (i mentioned "i won't be surprised if they field their younger players")..:p...But if you say so, okay then..;)
...
BTW, Luis Pongoh did mentioned they will fielded their strongest line-ups and try to beat China to top the group and avoids KOREA in SF:D
..if that really happens, there's no guarantee either for INA to win their SF tie against either MAS or KOR..;)
These players will win it for Malaysia today:
Winners:
1. LCW
2. WMC
3. EE Hui/WPT
I may be wrong but I am almost always right. :D
..IMO, if fielded, those players/pair are their best shot & chance for upending the Danes..good luck!

I don't know how the order of play is determined but during the last Sudirman Cup, they were drawn out of a hat (I think only for the finals). But if KKK or WPT are playing XD, I think the organisers would accomodate that.
..order of play is usually determined if there are players involved in other/multiple events..
ctjcad 05-13-2009, 11:12 PM .....if that really happens, there's no guarantee either for INA to win their SF tie against either MAS or KOR..;)

..meant to write "..either MAS or DEN.."
badMania 05-13-2009, 11:36 PM Krisna also just wrote to me that INA is going to field their strongest lineup  Quite surprising really......
In that case:
XD: Nova Widianto/Liliyana Natsir vs He Hanbin/Yu Yang (since Yu Yang has to play WD) -- Nova/Butet have yet to lose to He/Yu last year, so, I will think they have a slight slight advantage.
WS: Maria Kristin Yulianti vs CHN's any WS player -- now, this is the crucial one...I will give the pt to CHN.
MS: Sony Dwi Kuncoro vs Lin Dan -- again, Lin Dan should take this one.
WD: Nitya Krishinda Maheswari/Greysia Polii vs Du Jing/Yu Yang -- now, this is also a crucial tie. Depending on how Yu Yang's stamina, the INA pair could sneak a surprise win. Remember, this pair has beaten Cheng Shu/Zhao Yunlei before. Nevertheless, the CHN pair holds an edge.
MD: Hendra Setiawan/Mohd Ahsan vs Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun -- if the score is tied at 2-2, then, Hendra/Ahsan could play an important role by winning this match. Considering Hendra Setiawan's cool and composed mind whenever he plays Fu/Cai (never lost to them since the China Masters SS Final 2007), I will think the INA MD pair holds a slight edge.
I still think CHN will take it 3-2 or 4-1.
vching 05-13-2009, 11:39 PM ..meant to write "..either MAS or DEN.."
MAS or DEN are easier opponents than KOR.
A full blown match is what we want! :D:D

Forgive me if I'm a bit behind time, but there was once a time where Natsir/Marrissa was INA's top WD pair. Where di Vita go?
INA will have to pray for a point from Sony or Maria. Maria has a bigger possibility of an upset.
badMania 05-13-2009, 11:47 PM MAS vs DEN possible lineup:
XD: Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazary/Wong Pei Tty vs Thomas Laybourn/Kamilla Rytter-Juhl -- the DEN pair holds an edge, but, I am not surprised either if the MAS pair can steal the first tie.
WS: Wong Mew Choo vs Nana Brosolat Jensen -- absolutely no question abt this one, Wong has to win!
MS: Lee Chong Wei vs Peter Gade -- ditto for LCW. He holds a slight edge over Peter.
MD: Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong vs Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen -- if LCW happen to lose to Peter, then, this tie is absolutely crucial for MAS and a must-win! Likewise for DEN, if the score is 2-1 in their favor, Boe/Mogensen will have extra incentive to beat Koo/Tan. A 50-50 game, but recent encounters do favor the MAS pair.
WD: Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui vs Lena Frier-Kristensen/Kamilla Rytter-Juhl -- I think MAS will have won the tie by now, but, if the score is poised at 2-2, this ultimate decider will be hell of a game! Both pairs each have a player who will be playing in XD. The MAS pair has a slight edge.
Overall, I think MAS will be able to edge out DEN 3-2 or 4-1. God forbids if they lose as chaos might strike BC yet again with lots of "see...I told u so" postings ;)
tommy_bun 05-13-2009, 11:48 PM I think these will be China's line-ups
Zheng/Ma
Lin dan
Wang Lin/Yihan
Fu/Cai
Du/Yu

Vita Marissa has left the National team and become an independent player.

INA will have to pray for a point from Sony or Maria. Maria has a bigger possibility of an upset.
Vita has left national training camp and become independent player following Taufik, Flandy, Alvent, etc, since february '09, if i'm not wrong...
samuel882 05-13-2009, 11:52 PM The Danes might field LP/JR in place of Boe/Morgensen since the season campaigner holding a slightly advantages over KKK/TBH and the later was not in form in GZ..

If INA field their strongest team, could it be a warm up match before they meet again on the grand final ? :p And it will be an interesting match to be watched. Unfortunately, I can't watch it since I have something to do tonight.

..it could be a bluff. But then again, i think they know their best chance to reach the Final Rd. is to beat CHN & win the Group...They could also use this opportunity to gauge their match temperament if in case they should advance to the Final Rd and meet up with CHN..Hope nothing drastic or a freak accident happens to one of INA top players..
MAS or DEN are easier opponents than KOR.
A full blown match is what we want! :D:D
..IMO, out of the 2, MAS could prove to be the tougher foes..
Good luck to team INA..
badMania 05-14-2009, 12:03 AM True....INA can steal pts in WS, MD, WD, and XD if they face DEN in the SF.
Whereas, chances are, if INA is facing MAS, then the only discipline INA has an advantage will be XD. MAS also has a clear advantage only in MS. The others: MD, WS, and WD will be hard fights.
jasonmarc 05-14-2009, 12:06 AM I think tie between Chn and INA is going to be tough, as both team want to avoids KOR in SF.........MAS or Den are relatively easier opponent compared to KOR......

WS : Maria Kristin
WS : Nitya / Polii

george@chongwei 05-14-2009, 02:37 AM These players will win it for Malaysia today:
Winners:
1. LCW
2. WMC
3. EE Hui/WPT
I may be wrong but I am almost always right. :D
Half agree:p, but on the other hand, i think either ceh/wpt or kkk/tbh will end up as a winner today:) based on the latest team line up updated on tournamentsoftware;)
george@chongwei 05-14-2009, 02:42 AM it looks like Peter Gade migraine problem is a real news, not mind games as thought earlier, or maybe denmark thinks jan o jorgensen can play against lcw(remember swiss open semi final??) On the other hand, i saw somewhere in the forum that boe is injured, maybe boe is really injured and the vaterans, and the more experience pair, LP/JR had to be field in to replace them, or it could be denmark is depending on this pair's experience.
Anyway, by looking at the line up, mas team does have a slight advantage i could say, it just seems like xd department is a problem for Malaysia in my opinion.
I hope mas players won't take things forgranted. The outcome of this match will just depends on the players themself this time!:)
camon MALAYSIA!:):)
I'm now back to take a look. And I got another pleasant surprise. Not only did Singapore gain two points from the MD & WS, I just saw from the live scores that young Ashton Chen has clawed back from about 4 to 5 points down to beat Wacha 23-21 in the first game! What an impressive fightback.
Keep it up Singapore! :D
Well Ashton did give Wacha a good fight in 3 games, before losing.
We still have a chance to win with two more matches to go. By beating Poland will give Singapore a chance to fight for promotion to Group 1, since Poland has beaten Russia. :)
Will Yao Lei and Shinta secure us the honour?

Who is this boy, uncle Loh? He got much support from the crowds for the spirit he showed during his match. He pushed Wacha to the limit, and Wacha showed good sportsmanship too by pat his back after the game.

Yup, Malaysia has bright chance to advance into semifinal with both Peter Gade and Tine Rasmussen absence.

Oh I envy you that you can see everything on TV. ;)
Ashton and Derek Wong are local lads of about the same age and standard.
They are currently Singapore's more promising locals after the retirement of both Ronald Susilo and Kendrick Lee.
Though young and inexperienced as with our WD pair of Yao Lei/Shinta, they have acquitted themselves quite well so far. I hope the Sudirman Cup will be the beginning of a much better performance for them in years to come. :D
george@chongwei 05-14-2009, 02:59 AM I predict Malaysia to win 3-2 or 4-1 this time:)

Anyone has the H2H record for the WDs? It could really boil down to this last match ! In my opinion, the 1st 2 matches cud be split between DEN (XD) and MAS (MS). MD and WS is 50:50 both KKK/TBH and WMC look unconvincing . So it boils down to WD as the decider. What a cracker this gonna be....!

Oh so you're the man in the right place! :D
I have to day kudos to SIN's young WD team for defeating the bigger-sized Polish ladies (they must be bigger right?) 21-18 and put SIN top of the Group to meet THA for promotion to Div 1 (like football).
Hope our XD pair can win to give SIN greater confidence in their next encounter. :p
copadh 05-14-2009, 03:30 AM Sweden, once was European giant, finally saves their place in Group 3, beat Australia 3-1.
Sweden played in Group 1 in 2005, relegated to play in Group 2 (2007), and again relegated to play in Group 3 this year. So happy they are not relegated again, three times in a row...
Just check the rules again, Singapore won't have a chance to take 1st place in Group 2B if Russia win against the Netherlands. Head to head between SIN and RUS come first, and Russia beat Singapore 3-2...
Wah, very sporting huh! :D
But, SIN beat NED 4-1 and RUS managed only 3-2 against them.
So we may yet be leaders!
And Poland beat Russia 3-2! But SIN beat POL already even if it is 3-2.
So how?
copadh 05-14-2009, 03:40 AM Wah, very sporting huh! :D
Well, I might be wrong :)
RUS already clinched their tie, win 3-2 against NED.
SIN XD still on the court. Let's see what the latest standing will be

I know u r kidding but Kido's knees are not fully recovered and he needs more rest than the rest. It would be the stupidest decision to let Kido playing singles.
copadh 05-14-2009, 03:44 AM Guangzhou Gymansium is so quiet.... POL XD lead in interval, 11-8, and the crowds were busy with themselves....no claps...
come on, this is a stadium or cemetery?
badMania 05-14-2009, 03:46 AM Hendra Setiawan/Mohd Ahsan are probably the fittest among the 6 MD players and they have been trained in case they are needed as a scratch pair (like tonight) against CHN and more importantly against KOR in the SF. A victory in the SF against the reigning All-England champion Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun will certainly boost their confidence ahead of the anticipated tie against Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae in the SF on Saturday.

Yup, Copadh is right, if two teams are on equal pts, head to head records come first and not the number of matches won and lost.
This was the same situation during Malaysia's victorious Thomas Cup campaign of 1992, they were 2nd in the group cos they lost to Korea despite superior win-loss match ratio.

Next time better, Uncle Loh, Singapore have a good squad of youngsters. But beware of Japan/Hongkong and India (Saina and gangs should win against Bulgaria and promoted to Group 2)

Nah, LArs/Jonas had beaten KKK/TBH before, convincingly too. They have better record vs KKK/TBH than Boe/Morgenson, I think.
This time around, it's up to the Msian gals - WS & WD to do the honours.

Now how come RUS can top when they beat NED only 3-2 and SIN did better with 4-1? All other match results are about the same.
Is it purely because RUS beat SIN? Hard Luck and THA is a tough team to crack. But you'll never know ... Fight on Singapore! :D

Denmark http://static.tournamentsoftware.com/images/flags/DEN.gif vs http://static.tournamentsoftware.com/images/flags/MAS.gif Malaysia
1 XD Thomas Laybourn / Kamilla Rytter Juhl vs Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari / Wong Pei Tty
* Danes advantage, close match...unless Fairuzizuan can show his true capability... 55-45 to the Danes
2 MS Jan O Jorgensen vs Lee Chong Wei
* Need not much saying....LCW all the way 90-10...unless food poisoning
3 MD Lars Paaske / Jonas Rasmussen vs Koo Kean Keat / Tan Boon Heong
*Unless KKK/TBH can show more serious side and not smilling the whole time..
if not the Danes will nail it.....55-45 to Danes
4 WS Nanna Brosolat Jensen vs Wong Mew Choo
* Choo-choo train to nail it...but wont be easy...Nanna is a hard nut to crack
60-40 to Choo-choo
5 WD Kamilla Rytter Juhl / Lena Frier Kristiansen vs Chin Eei Hui / Wong Pei Tty
*our gals should nail it.....60-40

CEH/WPT are now different from 2 years ago.
So sure it going to be HKG......maybe JPN......will face THA...........;)
That's why I say likely. Against JPN, HKG probably has WS (not guarantee) while JPN has MD & WD in the bag and MS & XD are 50:50.

badMania 05-14-2009, 06:24 AM Although I would very much like to see Hendra/Ahsan win, but, as long as they can stretch the CHN pair to rubber-set, I think they should be ok, considering that it's a scratch pairing.
copadh 05-14-2009, 06:25 AM Hendra tries to calm Ahsan. 10-9 for INA
arumdaun 05-14-2009, 06:26 AM Although I would very much like to see Hendra/Ahsan win, but, as long as they can stretch the CHN pair to rubber-set, I think they should be ok, considering that it's a scratch pairing.

copadh 05-14-2009, 06:38 AM Ahsan was faulted again. his 3rd fault of the match
badMania 05-14-2009, 06:38 AM Unexpectedly, trailing 17-19, the INA pair played brilliantly and snatched the second set 21-19 with 4 pts from Hendra's serves.
Hendra Setiawan is still better guarding the net, although Mohd Ahsan's smashes are not as deadly as Markis Kido.
The INA pair has performed up to expectation in stretching the All-England champion to rubber-set.

he should keep his cool if he wants to win against CY-FHF
narnia 05-14-2009, 06:46 AM Ahsan played quite well.
He always tried to make quick shots running around the court but they were not so effective as the CHN's defense was good enough.
He will need more experiences, especially need to attack effectively.
AFAIK, INA's style is not that fast-playing rather skillful way of managing the games.
All the best for the INA! :)

samuel882 05-14-2009, 06:53 AM AS expected. Danes clinch the 1st point. Despite the pressure on them to deliver, both Thomas / Kamilla still able to deliver it.

Megatop 05-14-2009, 06:56 AM could replace Kido if he improves other parts of his game.

Yeah, they will only get better as they learn from experiences. I think even the Chinese commentator was impressed, saying Ahsan reminded him of Fu when he was younger. The smashing.
