As I expected, because they don't even have the ranking pts to compete in the INA SS anyway.

Now, the Auckland Int Series will represent these players' first chance of winning WR points. High hopes are placed esp on Ulin/Berry, Ulin/Jenna and Jenna/Oliv.

I agree. Ullin-Berry and Ullin-Jenna has the best chance of getting anything here from INA... On the WS side, I think Pipin and Febby can go pretty far... I hope Febby can get another International Challenge title under her belt [after her 2008 Malaysian Challenge win]... That way she can be quite well seeded at the Asian Junior or World Junior [if PBSI allow her to play]... In the last few months, Febby has shown that she is mentally very tough and can beat many good players older than her...

Given the lack of other ASEAN competitors here, I think INA can win:
3 titles (70% chance); in MD, XD, and WS
4 titles (40% chance); in MD, XD, WS, and WD
5 titles (10% chance); in MD, XD, WS, WD, and MS
:p

That's right... :D I suppose the other countries think the distance [thus the travelling expense] is not worth it. Except for Rosaria 'Pipin' Pungkasari, all the INA players are 19 years or younger. This event is mainly used to gain international experience for the INA Juniors...

I still think INA has a good chance in WS, MD, and XD... I don't know who Joe Wu, Dean Nuttall, Bjorn Seguin, and James Eunson are... Are any of these 4 seeded MS New Zealanders good? I wonder whether Gifar or Riyanto can defeat them... :p

Bjorn Wins Third Title in a Row

http://www-static.sportingpulse.com/pics/00/00/38/00/380095_1_M.jpg (http://www-static.sportingpulse.com/pics/00/00/38/00/380095_1_O.jpg)

Waikato badminton player Bjorn Seguin, 19 celebrated his third tournament win in succession after having a straight set victory in the final of the North Island and Northland championships in Whangarei over the weekend.
To add to his recent triumphs at the New Zealand U23, the North Harbour Open and the latest in Northland the talented teenager also won the doubles title at the event, teaming with fellow Waikato player, Michael Fowke to defeat Southland's James Eunson and Ashraf Dhoray(Auckland).
The victory in doubles proved how strong the Waikato region has become in the sport in recent times firstly under the guidance of TJ Weistra and now current coach Luiz Suarez from Mexico.
American-born Seguin is not yet available for New Zealand under Badminton World Federation criteria . He can play Whyte Trophy for his adopted nation but is still ineligible for the Commonwealth Games.
It was a tough event for Southland's Eunson, 19 who made three finals and lost all three. In the singles he was beaten by Seguin 21-14 21-17. The doubles was also straight games while the mixed went three games as Malaysian-born, Wellington-resident Jian de Chew celebrated his 29th birthday by teaming with Southland's Anna Rankin to defeat Eunson and Auckland Stephanie Cheng.
The women's singles was a reverse of the New Zealand U23 final with Auckland's Clare Chapple showing plenty of resolve to come from a game down to defeat Rankin 14-21 21-18 21-18.
Emma Chapple and Stephanie Cheng took three games to overcome the young pair of Kritteka Gregory and Mary O'Connor from Waitakere for the women's doubles title.
------------------------------------------
Let's see how Bjorn fairs against Gifar... :D INA's #1 BS in... the Under-16 category... :p They should meet in the quarterfinals... ;)

& thanks for putting that article up Krisna. I was hoping someone who had seen these boys play recently would reply. (& I've never seen James or Bjorn play singles) But all 4 of these guys are very fit. Bjorn would probably be on the NZ squad if he was a NZ citizen. James & Joe are on the squad. Dean was on various development squads over the years. I'm assuming he still works for badminton North Harbour which would give him heaps of time to practice!

I was wondering - does anyone known if John Moody & Craig Cooper have retired? They aren't listed as being on the National team any more.

Riyanto and Gifar are also very fit [for their age, 16 and 15]... They are, after all, pupils of Coach Fang Kaixiang, who said, "Obtaining physical fitness is the most brainless thing one can do in badminton. Other players may beat you in technique or playing style or intelligence, but you may never be beaten in terms of physical fitness."

Gifar is through to the next round after a very easy 1st round win just now...

It was not a good night for Australian James Paybody, ranked 303 he was beaten in the first round by young Asher Richardson (16) from Canterbury. This was a good win for Richardson, ranked 548 who earlier this year won the June Bevan under 17 boys singles title. Paybody then continued his bad run as he and his partner Spoorti Rattan, seeded 3/4 lost the first round of the mixed doubles to the New Zealand pairing of Michael Fowke and Susannah Leydon-Davis both from Waikato.
Waikato teenager Bjorn Seguin will play his first match of the tournament on day two and is aiming to push his unbeaten run in New Zealand to five consecutive events after titles at the North Harbour Open, New Zealand U23 tournament, North Island Championships and Counties Manukau Open. Other top seeds still to get on court are fellow Kiwis Joe Wu, Dean Nuttall and James Eunson from Southland.
Women’s singles top seed, Indonesian Rosaria Pungkasari at 53 in the world and second seed is Kristina Ludikova(Czech Republic) ranked at 62 will also play their first match on Thursday.
Seeded Kiwis Rachel Hindley and Michelle Chan both won their first round matches in straight games but Southland’s Anna Rankin was beaten by Indonesia Ana Rovita 21-13 21-14.

Good achievement by Asher Richardson - although I had never heard of james Paybody. Paybody's mixed doubles partner Spoorti Rattan was also beaten in the first round by Clare Chapple - Rattan is on the Austalian National Squad.

All of PB Djarum boys and girls are through the QF. They will face some tricky matches today, esp in the Singles. INA might take 3 out of 4 places in XD SF, 2 in WD SF as well as MD SF.

Didit/Yayu beat the top-seed in XD yesterday; while Jenna/Oliv and Yayu/Delis beat the fourth and the second-seed in WD respectively

Bjorn Seguin lost to 15-year-old Gifar 16-21, 17-21...
James Eunson [3/4] will take on unseeded 16-year-old Riyanto tomorrow...
Top seeded MD Michael Fowke-Bjorn Seguin lost to Ullin-Berry 9-21, 13-21 in 25 minutes...
INA lost 2 XD today, but still have their best XD, Ullin-Jenna in the fray... There is still a chance that INA might sweep the 5 titles in Auckland...

Woowww...congratulation for Indonesian juniors who grab 4 titles in Auckland Internasional Series. I really hope with them to show their performance at world tournaments since their age 17-18 y.o. Especially for Berry/Ulinnuha and Didit/Seiko serta Jenna/Rufika, I think they must participate in many tournaments this year, so next year they can start in GP tournaments.
I don't know about Febby Angguni, is she still in Pelatnas? If she is not, I think better if she can participate in many International Series like Febe, to raise up her world rank.

All in all, yet another overseas tourney where most of the PB Djarum representatives came home with a title. If PBSI is to groom its youngsters, they should really be very selective in terms tourney participation and ensure that some of the players can really have a chance of winning the title.

The Auckland International Series 2009 represents Febby Angguni's second title after she won the more prestigious and competitive Malaysia International Series 2008. She did beat a couple of KOR players like Kim Moon Hi and Bae Seung Hee enroute to the title, underlying her potential.

Yeah, Mohd Ulinnuha/Jenna Gozali should have probably done better...but well, both are also playing in MD and WD respectively and won the titles. So, cannot expect more from them really :)

They were using Flypower rackets, as the juniors are no longer with YY anymore (not sure about the main squad)

About Ulin/Jenna, I think their performance (including the rest of the team) was heavily affected by the sudden temperature drop compared to INA. Even the locals mentioned about how cold it was inside the hall.

The Auckland International Series 2009 represents Febby Angguni's second title after she won the more prestigious and competitive Malaysia International Series 2008. She did beat a couple of KOR players like Kim Moon Hi and Bae Seung Hee enroute to the title, underlying her potential.

Wasn't it the 2008 Malaysian International Challenge?

Sorry for late reply :) I think I have a picture of it at http://soon.smugmug.com/gallery/8637864_BussA#P-6-20

It's down the far end of the picture. The area at the top is directly next to court one.

yup, that's pretty much right.. Ulin's smashes are very strong and sharp, because of his high jump and him being a relatively tall boy (for his age). I saw his cross court smashes and it was like really awesome, just like single players' smash.

Berry himself is quick in the front court, especially intercepting half court shots (bola setengah lapangan). And him being tall as well is also an advantage if he's in the front.

Krisna
06-22-2009, 06:20 AM
Somehow we see these types of MD pairs more often these days... The taller LYD is the front court player, while the much shorter JJS is the slammer in the back-court. The taller Hendra Setiawan also often act as a playmaker in the front while Kido is his slammer with many jumping smash action... :p

Young Indonesian's Dominate Auckland International

There were no Kiwi winners on the finals day of the US$5,000 Auckland Badminton International as some unheralded Indonesians dominated four out of the five finals.

Although not Indonesia's top players the mainly teenage competitors from the badminton crazy nation won everything bar the mixed doubles title, which had two Australian combinations playing off for the trophy.

New Zealand No1 Joe Wu came close to a win in the men’s singles but the two hour-long semifinal clashes in singles and doubles the previous night appeared to take its toll against the talented 16-year-old Indonesia Riyanto Subagja. Wu took the first game 14-21 in an entertaining contest before the Indonesian came back to claim the second 21-16 and then the final game with an array of winners to seal the match 21-10 in the final game.

The other final featuring Kiwis was the women’s match where Michelle Chan and Rachel Hindley faced the Indonesia pair of Jenna Gozali and Rufika Olivta. The New Zealand combination held a solid lead in the first game but the visitors came back with some subtle touches to take it 21-16 and the second game 21-11.

In the all-Australian mixed final the more experienced pair of Glenn Warfe and Renuga Veeran beat Chad Whitehead and Eugenia Tanaka.

The women’s singles saw another rising star from Indonesia Febby Angguni, 18, the women’s top seed defeat fellow Indonesian Rosaria Pungkasari in straight games while Berry Angriawan and Muhammad Ulinnuha put on a powerful display to account for their countrymen Indrianto and Kusdianto in straight games in from of a small but enthusiastic crowd at Gillies Ave.

Many of the players will return to Auckland for the US$50,000 New Zealand International Grand Prix tournament in late July which is expected to confirm a naming right sponsor within the next week.

Results:
Men’s doubles:
Berry Angriawan/Muhammad Ulinnuha(Indonesia) Didit Juang Indrianto/Seiko Wahyu Kusdianto(Indonesia) 21-14 21-19

Mixed final:
Glenn Warfe/Renuga Veeran(Australia) bt Chad Whitehead/Eugenia Tanaka(Australia) 21-12 21-15.

Women’s singles final:
Febby Angguni(Indonesia) bt Rosaria Yusfin Pungkasari(Indonesia) 21-15 21-16.

Men’s singles:
Riyanto Subagja(Indonesia) bt Joe Wu(New Zealand) 14-21 21-16 21-10.

Women’s doubles:
Jenna Gozali/Rufika Olivta(Indonesia) bt Michelle Chan/Rachel Hindley(New Zealand) 21-16 21-11

Riyanto is very handsome. The look of joy on those first 2 photos in lovely!

I guess with Joe the coaches will have to decide if they want him to do 2 events or increase his chances of winning( in Oceania anyway) by having him concentrate on just 1.

Great photos Jim. Any commentary on what you saw? Other than Joe, which of the other NZers looked competitive?

& was the event poorly attended on all days? (other than the finals I can't see many spectators in your shots). I'll bet it was freezing in the hall!

Btw, if they want to play in warmer weather, come to the U.S. Open, next time. Krisna should push for that idea and we'd welcome the Djarum squad..:)

All badminton halls in NZ are cold in the winter. Waikato & Wellington halls are the coldest I have ever been inside a building. People go stand outside to warm up!:D & in summer they are like saunas.

I was going to go to the semis but I just knew it would be miserable inside.

North Harbour where the NZ Grand Prix is going to be played has a lovely warm upstairs area to sit in.

There weren't a lot of spectators for this one on all days certainly more in the weekend. The parking didn't help - I was given a carparking pass :) but there were no allocated carparks .

Overall, I think there was a lot of support for Indonesia - sometimes more than local . Atmosphere took a while to build up but there was good support for both sides.

I think Henry Tam and Joe Wu had some good potential, especially after taking out the Aussies on Friday and almost getting the indonesians in the Semis. Should be good to see what happens in a month's time.

It was definitely cold there, a lot of the volunteers had gloves and jerseys under their jackets. I myself was wearing a fleece vest under a woolen jacket...

Last year I was playing at Waikato and eek!oh! is right: it's warmer standing outside. Personally I think the coldest I've done is Christchurch... I don't think you can find any badminton hall in New Zealand with any insulation in it, which is probably why they hire out an event hall for the NZ Open rather than getting a badminton hall proper :p

eek!oh!

I can't remember whether it was the same inside the hall (perhaps not), but Invercargill must have been the coldest place I've played... I remember being so cold it hurt (not in the main stadium)!

I usually wear two shirts (or more) when playing in Christchurch..

It blows my mind to imagine how players who seem totally unstoppable when they play down here in the South Island can get wiped off the court by these INA players who are even a few years younger than them!?

It makes me feel so small :).

Hi Ctjad, yep with 30D. Thanks for suggestion, will try to take more on the face.
By the way, I notice when trying to take photo from the opposite court (to take face) the net almost always cover the face :( If I go low, the fence blocking the view and if I go high place the net blocking the face :(

..yes, i totally understand & can imagine your situation. Unfortunately, that's the way it goes. If you notice or see other baddy photos, most of the pics taken are away from the net/nettings; either above or @ the side the net or even below the nettings. There are instances where pics would be taken at net level or through the nettings. In those cases, it'll depend on how fast of a lens one has to focus through those nettings; the DOF (Depth of Field) plays a factor as well. Those situations, along with taking pics of players on the fly/moving, are the challenging ones. But they can be done and if achieved, they could turn into some great pics (i notice the 1st one and the one with Rachel Hindley, they're not too bad; the 2nd one, with the shuttle/net in focus, i guess that was taken at random??).

Thanks Ctjcad for the tips. I try to prefocus at certain place on the court and waiting for the player to get there but from time to time alot of action happened somewhere else so I try to quickly re-focus and as you guess, it focuses on the net >.<

I miss getting some of that height and shooting across the net. It's not an easy shot given the lighting in the hall  When you're on the same level as the players you have to watch out for the net tape being close to the eye level of the players  If you find the net to be a problem for focusing, then I would suggest (like many of the wise other photographers on this forum before me) that you aim at their feet :D
