View Full Version : 2009 Indonesia Open: Will we get a Lee Chong Wei - Lin Dan semifinal?
chris-ccc 06-04-2009, 12:54 PM .
Greetings,
News received saying that both LCW and LD will participate in the 2009 Indonesia Open.
In the latest World Rankings, LCW is still No.1, but LD has dropped to No.3. This means that they will be in the same half of the draw.
Will we get to watch a LCW-vs-LD match at the semi-finals?

A Lee Chong Wei - Lin Dan semi-final on the cards this time
By LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: A possible showdown in the semi-finals between world No.1 Lee Chong Wei and Olympic champion Lin Dan sets the stage for a thrilling Indonesian Open badminton championships in Jakarta from June 16-21.
Both players skipped the Indonesian Open last year to concentrate on preparing for the Beijing Olympics but this time, they have committed themselves to the event, which will be held back-to-back to the Singapore Open from June 9-14.
Their presence in the Indonesian Open is no surprise because it is the last Super Series tournament offering ranking points to the World Championships in Hyderabad from Aug 10-16.
...........
BAM national chief coach Rashid Sidek said that it would be a very interesting Indonesian Open this year.
“Lin Dan has been selective of tournaments he plays in and he surely wants to do well in the Indonesian Open to get back into second place in the rankings,” he said.
“It will be a tough Indonesian Open to win as all the top players will be present in their bid to improve on their rankings to get a better seeding for the world championships."

Owh, for those who said LIn Dan can't play in 'southeast asia' , shut them up, Lin Dan! though i hope LCW can stop you in semifinal, just be there and play, mr. dan.

Anyway, i got another confirmation from an article in badzine.info (another thread). I guess, for now, we'll see if LinDan truly follows up and participates..

.
If Lin Dan doesn't follow up and participates in the 2009 Indonesia Open, could he be dropped to No.4 in the World Rankings?, therefore could it be a LCW-vs-LD match at the Finals of the 2009 WC?

The door to the Ina SS is wide open....welcome to Jakarta!!
limsy 06-05-2009, 07:59 AM haha,i will say yes if lindan come:p
extremenanopowe 06-05-2009, 09:46 AM Lindan will sure come next year to singapore. Am sure he wants to go to Universal Studios with XXF. ;)
Krisna 06-05-2009, 12:41 PM The door to the Ina SS is wide open....welcome to Jakarta!!
Yeah! Come to Jakarta so we can witness Taufik defeat you one more time, Lin Dan... ;) Taufik needs to be victorious in order to further promote his THL clothing line... ;) So he is very well motivated to become the 7 time INA Open champ...

Sound like a little boy got lost in the jungle and when darkness comes, he got real scared, wetting his pants, but thump his chest and yell out loud "I am not afraid of anyone hiding out there so come on out right now and face me!!!"...:p:D
Now, jokes aside, looking at the draw, if TH hopes to win, this is the chance...first only one CJ/BCL/LD/LCW/PSH/SS will emerge from the other half and the top gun in TH half is also an aging PG:)
blckknght 06-05-2009, 07:51 PM I wonder if Peter Gade will reach some of his best badminton towards the very end of his career, just like Poul Erik Hoyer Larsen. aside from the weird toe/rib injuries and viruses, he seems to be moving steadily higher in terms of his play.
apu4life 06-05-2009, 10:26 PM Its exciting to know about the LCW vs LD SF in INA open. I do hope that LCW will be in form and hungry for a victory against him, seeing that he will be abit tired with SIN open. Another matchup is Taufik Vs Gade in QF that should be interesting aswell. Will Peter take his revenge from this years AE tournament, or will Taufik have his number once again :D
I predict TAUFIK VS LD FINALS hehe

I agree with this...

Hi apu4life ,
You and Krisna are more daring than me in our predictions... predicting the MS FINAL :p:p:p
The best I can predict is for the Semi-Finals. IMHO, we could find LCW, PG, LD and TH all there.

No...the final will be: TH vs LCW
It will be very very difficult for LD to defeat LCW in Jakarta.
As for LCW, playing in Jakarta is like a cat eating a fish...[nyam...nyam...nyam]
As for LD, playing in Jakarta is like a cat being forced to eat vegetable....

I agree with this... :cool:lucky again for TH, just like in the 04 Athen OG, easy path for TH, only have to deal with PG. Look at both draws, TH faces no chinese or dark horse players. Elevator journey to the final for TH. However, this time around, LD is no shon mo.
bradmyster 06-08-2009, 09:11 PM Lin Dan will be a bit tired after taking down Chen Jin, then maybe taking down Lee Chong Wei.

Man I hate this, so unsportsmanlike :( I hope LCW thrashes him so bad so he will know how LCW feels when he goes up to the final stage and plays Lin Dan. Its really unfair to see a fit Lin Dan getting "pass-bye's" comparing to other players that played the best badminton they have in order to get into finals... Teach him a lesson pls LCW/TH :D

Things like this happened many, many times and most of them were committed by the Chinese team. That's why personally I have never admitted the true / real power/supremacy of Chinese MS players individually. They are not as strong as you think.

Why doesnt the BWF do somethign about it? No proofs? I know this happened many times, but im just wondering as to why haven't anyone sanctionned the teams that do this?
koo_fan 06-08-2009, 11:30 PM Why doesnt the BWF do somethign about it? No proofs?
I think, it is 'legal'. Like it or not, it is. Unethical? Maybe. I'd like to see other countries to have more players and fight this. I think the best defense is the best offence. Don't judge China, Judge your team.
george@chongwei 06-08-2009, 11:56 PM the chances are pretty high tho:p

Hi george@chongwei ...That's not a nice thing to say against Lin Dan. :(:(:(
Lin Dan still holds better winning records against most opponents, although he has never performed well in Indonesia.
IMHO, Lin Dan should make it to the Semi-Finals at this 2009 Indonesia Open.

george@chongwei 06-17-2009, 01:57 AM that's why bolehians alway feel dejected, they fantasize too much.
what has this got to do with bolehians?
i thought this is suppose to be between china jia you fans and ina fans?;)
OneToughBirdie 06-17-2009, 10:25 AM Yes,..LD all the way.....because he is the 'God of Badminton'...........;)
The reason for LD to wanna win IO09 is obvious and here is why...IO is one title LD does not have...the stadium/fans will favour INA players but should not affect LD much when there is a gap between LD and the rest, maybe LCW or a big maybe TH, may have a chance to beat LD in INA if the crowd is behind LCW and only if LCW can make it to MSSF (not easy to get past PSH/Simon) and hit top form to meet LD. Whenever the critics say LD is 'afraid' of playing in INA, it spurs/motivates LD to play harder to win the one title that eludes him, I think LD wanna win IO09 to shut the critics up once and for all, and if I am betting with real $$$, not with heart and cheap talk, it would be foolish not to bet on LD to win. Also, LD is rested and ready...and something to ponder, LD may meet CJ, will there be an arranged outcome? I hope not cos CJ today could not beat LD even if CJ play all out...for LD to lose one day and not favour to win OG12, we need a super player to come out from CHN or elsewhere (there is none now) and the age factor to erode LD of his trademark speed, fitness and power. Look at TH in 05, fantastic confident player and now, 'one step slower' and not the same 05 player.

You worry too much, who can stop these two players storming into semi final, just like who can stop Lin Dan from winning to IO title? Lin Dan came prepare and eagerly proof he can win those illusive SE Asia titles and I think he will succeed.

I'm only hoping that we can have a 'LCW-vs-LD' match at this 2009 Indonesia Open.
LD should be the one to beat. But it should be interesting to see how LCW would tackle LD here
From what I see, here at Badminton Central, LCW could be getting lots of support from the Indonesian crowd.
It is a 'LCW (with Indonesian supporters) versus LD' match. Therefore, we should find ourselves an interesting match here. ;););)

As badminton fans, what match-up does anyone hope to see...for me, it will be LD-LCW, most times entertaining and exciting, except for a few recent meetings that are uneventful. As for LCW getting into SF, facing either PSH/SS is not gonna be easy, especially SS in INA.

huangkwokhau 06-18-2009, 07:52 PM sure, why not? TH got a elevator ride to the IO final.
If Sony and TH get to SF, I think Sony may win over TH..anyway...INA is not like CHN to fix the game especially TH is independent....he wants to show that he is better than Sony.....
I could not wait to see LCW vs LD in semi...I think this time, LD will get more support from INA crowd due to recent incidents which they may boo LCW ( for some reasons, INA crowd has not booed LCW yet but cheering for LD so far)
pjswift 06-18-2009, 08:29 PM and suprisely he beat hh in 3 set:eek:
LCW's just being kind to HH, not wanting to make him look bad by gifting him G2 with many unforced errors. Even in poor form it's unlikely LCW can be behind HH all the way in a game.
But LCW's under no pressure to beat LD. He will probably play his normal predictable game and do a favour to TH by working LD to the hilt.
Ferrerkiko 06-18-2009, 08:38 PM This is not an important tournament, i think Lin dan will again entertain his fans, give away the game to Lee chong wei. Look at this year Swiss open 2009, did Lin dan give his best, i dont think so !

In LD vs CJ match-ups, as far as I recall CJ already had 2 back injury retirements (and then next tourney the next week no back injury) :p:D. So this time, play until finish lah at least. Anyway, I think LD can beat CJ one, even when CJ good form.

pjswift 06-19-2009, 06:12 AM Maybe, but i don't think so. If LCW vs LD happen, LD will have a lot of support from indonesian crowd. Just See it :D
Agree. It's not just INA crowd.
CHN fans are louder and everywhere.
In SO MSF of BCL vs BP, it was CHN fans vs local fans.

LD got warm up, but CJ more 'warmed up" this time ;). Cos to the disappointment of many fans, there will be no LD vs LCW.
It will be CJ vs LCW or PSH. And CJ won the rubber at 21-4 :eek:

maybe lyb confident that even cj can slay lcw after nguyen tm victory:)
george@chongwei 06-19-2009, 08:30 AM so no ld and lcw clash in the semi final..so the crowd will cheer for chen jin tomorrow..to be honest, chen jin game has been improving day by day..i will not be surprise if chong wei lost to him tommorow though.
koo_fan 06-19-2009, 08:37 AM I've been waiting for the ld and lcw's showdown la.
This Chen Jin is such a killjoy. haha
Good luck for both. Make it a good semifinal.
jasonmarc 06-19-2009, 08:39 AM Wow..Thats unbelievable...!
3 possibilities.....

3) CJ is really on fire....and totally out play LD in the rubber.....(if this is the one,...LCW is in trouble tomorrow)

Perhaps it is a strategy to let Chen Jin play LCW in the semis. They both last met was in the AE'08 semis(correct me if I'm wrong),which already a year ago. From the perspective of China coaching staff, this is a good opportunity to see which level Chen Jin stand now,to the build-up of the upcoming World Championships.
LYB: Chen Jin got nothing to lose against the world#1 afterall. If Chen Jin lose this time,it's fine...let the horse come,I still got Lin Dan,BCL...

yah, i'm wrong this time... it's LD to warm up CJ for playing LCW this time :D:D:D
but seriously speaking, this could be another team strategy from LYB prior to WC, to test how CJ could deal with LCW... or a further vision, to build CJ up in the forthcoming 2-3 years for the next OG... like it or not, China is the only team that would do such as they always regard national honour as a overwhelming priority over personal honour...
personaly, I would like to see CJ be really strong, and TH / PG have their goodies back, so there could be 5 top forces instead of only LD/LCW rivalry. If this happens, we could have a better badminton world.

:eek::eek: What a shocker: CJ defeated LD 21-4 in the rubber.:eek::eek:
Someone must have told LYB about this thread. So LYB wanted to play tricks on us here at Badminton Central.:confused::confused:
Seriously though: I just came back from playing Badminton myself, so I didn't know what actually happened. Was LD injured, or CJ was playing exceptionally well?
Shall now go and read our Quarter-Finals thread.

Now I see your previous concern about the highly anticipated Lin Dan meeting Chong Wei in SF not coming thru ... Is not that bad either to have Chong Wei vs Chen Jin, may not have the drama but should be a solid and refreshing battle. Anyway, for Chong Wei is a lose-lose situation if he meets with lin Dan. If he wins then critics would say this SS is not the essential tournament and if he lose then he chokes again!
The only unfortunately thing is the match between CW vs CJ is not on TV court.
Took 65 minutes to overcame Lin Dan so I would have to say the fight is quite really, I think Lin Dan didn't want to push far in game 3 as he realized he might not win anyway, not on that day!
Taufik vs Soni on TV court, even a die hard like me find hard to generate interest.

WOW... poor organizing to the extreme of not showing LCW vs CJ. Could have easily take out a WS or WD match from the TV court.:(
I wonder if they would have the same plan if it would have been Lin Dan vs LCW.

Tuafik basically is untouchable and you have to "give face" to other events(WD,WS,XD), is a tough decision for the organizer. Should have done like Swiss Open separated into 2 sessions and broadcast every semi final match, sell more tickets that way :D

ctjcad 06-19-2009, 04:57 PM ..this one, pitting 2 of the same countrymen, i would call a calculated move..

ctjcad 06-19-2009, 07:39 PM - Do you really think he could have lost by a margin of 17 pts??..
- When was the last time LinDan lost by that margin?? or close to that??..
LinDan knew, if he wins his match, he would be facing LCW, who's probably waiting for him in the Semifinals Rd. And if by chance LinDan wins over LCW, either Taufik or Sony, along with indra & the rest of the boisterous and rumpus INA crowd will be waiting for him in the Final Rd.
Unfortunately, if LinDan wants to keep his edge for the upcoming WC in India, he should've competed in last week's S'pore Open and probably could've win it.
sysoh 06-19-2009, 07:43 PM This is obviously match-fixing. China would like to have LD and Chen Jin as 3rd and 4th seed for WC so that they won't meet too early at QF and SF. China always treat individual event like team event. I hate LYB and it is a shame for us being a Chinese. Without such match-fixings, China is still the strongest team on the earth. Do they need to do such things so often?
huangkwokhau 06-19-2009, 08:00 PM There is no smashes from LD during the whole match..basically all rallies and it seems that CHN wanted to have CJ to test LCW instead of LD...very dissapointed that we cn not have LD vs LCW in SF.....at one point..at the end of 2nd set, people thought CJ was injured...and would not continue to 3rd set..he did but LD hardly smashed and gave away the match......

sysoh 06-19-2009, 08:09 PM 1 stone kills 2 birds.
First bird: To have LD and CJ as 3rd and 4th seed.
2nd bird: To test the improved CJ against LCW.
Smart move but also a shameful move.

I also like CJ, actually more than LD or BCL. Would rather see him really fight it out to his full potential than those 'back injury retirements' :D.
Taufik & uncle PG not many years left to play, esp PG, already 33. So, I suppose the 'uncle' is giving us his best baddy before he calls it quits.
After those 2 retire, more boring.
Anyway, you dont count Sony K in the list? I suppose that's for another thread.;)

Actually, they could have split the court ratio to 6 and 4. The TV court gets 6 matches (maybe both MS). Something like how Malaysia and Singapore does it.
Running it ala Swiss Open will be too long, potentially 10 hours of matches.

this time he's wrong i think:D ld loses the title this year, because he got chinese helpers and also the chinese helper eventually whitewashed lin dan himself in the 3rd game.:p lin dan must be thinking, oh this chen jin, he's too much.. never give face at all to me.:D:D

I still think Lin Dan did not play as Lin Dan. Disappointed if it was intentional.
For the 21-4, I agree that Lin Dan had whitewashed himself. If he did it intentionally, then it's a shame for a champion. It'll discredit Chen Jin for the won.

dood1234 06-27-2009, 02:55 AM That's fair: aging Taufik vs. aging Peter... ;)
I agree with this...
NO your statement is unfair to Peter, Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei, and others.
If the information on Wikipedia is correct, then....
(1981-08-10)TH is 27 yrs old (August 10, 1981)
(1976-12-14)PG is 32 yrs old (December 14, 1976)

(1983-10-14)LD is 25 yrs old (October 14, 1983)
So as you can see Taufik is only 1 year older than Lee Chong Wei and 2 years older than Lin Dan while the age gaps between Peter Gade and LCW/LD are 6 and 7 years, respectively.
While Taufik is one of my favorite players along with Peter Gade and Chen Hong, I don't understand why people consider Taufik is aging. He should still be able to maintain high pace gameplay and still remain competitive - yet he cannot at the moment.

TH, LCW and LD are almost belonging in the same age group. It's only PG who is the much older brother.
It is believed that PG started playing Badminton much later than his younger 3 brothers.
Therefore, could we see them all retiring at about the same time, let's say at the 2012 Olympics?
