Malaysia’s Lee not optimistic about retaining title at S’pore Open Channel NewsAsia - Tuesday, June 9
SINGAPORE: He is the current world number one and defending champion of the Aviva Singapore Badminton Open, but Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei is not optimistic about retaining his title.
He is, instead, setting his sights on the World Championship in August.
Last year, some top players — including then world number one Lin Dan from China — gave the Aviva Singapore Badminton Open a miss as they were preparing for the Beijing Olympics.
Lee took advantage of that and went on to win the event against Indonesia’s Simon Santosa.
Now, despite being ranked number one in the world, he is not upbeat about his prospects at the Singapore Open due to his tight schedule and short preparation time.
One player who is hoping to do well at the Singapore Open is crowd favourite, Denmark’s Peter Gade. The 32—year—old current world number two plans to retire next year and is hoping for a win in Singapore.
China’s Lin is again giving the event a miss, but China will still have a strong presence at the tournament which begins on Wednesday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The withdrawal from Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng is due to the waist injury that Cai Yun suffered during the training session on last Friday.
