Seems not many ppl from New York, US (even east coast US) are in this Forum.

I would like to set a local club somewhere near my neighborhood, and I want to do this survey for so long, your participation is very welcome:

If you live in 50 miles within New York City, US (use zip code 11365 as center, since I live close there ^___^ ), please answer the following questions:

1. Where do u live? - Please use zip code, easy to check online :D

2. Where do u play - Please provide local club/college/high school name (u can put more than 1 answer)

3. What kinda racket u use? - brand, model

4. Where did u get ur racket - shop on line (website, plz)? local store? shop in another nation?

5. How many hrs u usually play for a week?

6. If I set a club about within 10 miles (use zip code 11365 as center), are u willing to participate? Sorry, under progress, contacting different local school gym for now. So, no detail address is available yet.

7. How much u can afford for member fee? - pay by each visit? pay by a yearly member fee?

Even though, I don't expect too many ppl to answer the questions, but let me get a try, see how "poplular" badminton is in NY.

Thanks, everyone.

umm. have you heard about nycbadminton.com - i play in manhattan 3 times a week. i know there are clubs in brooklyn and queens as well. At the manhattan club you can get coaching as well. The rates are pretty stiff though - but they give you shuttles. Also, the people there are auth. yonex resellers. you can get all the yonex racquets, shoes, clothing, bags etc. and members get it a little cheaper than online.

the standard in the manhattan club is pretty diverse. some people are very good, others are beginners and lots of people in between. Friday is crowded, Sunday and tuesday is good. the club also meets on wednesdays but that venue is closed right now.

If you're interested, just show up - people will explain the fees and everything to you and it's pretty easy to find people to play with.

I heard about NYCBadminton before. However, their schedule kinda conflict with my current club schedule. Therefore, can't really participate in that club.

You said u know some clubs in Brooklyn and Queens? Coool... I live in Queens, if u can provide more information on clubs in these 2 places, that will be really really helpful for me.

Thnx for all ur information.

Cole's sportscenter at Greenwich Village.

It belongs to NYU. Corner of Broadway and East 3rd as I recall.

I used to play there for a while every Friday something like 5 years ago when I lived in NY.

Isn't that still a possibility?

To klaphat: that Greenwich village place you talked about, can you tell me the direction (by subway preferably) and the fee? At the moment nycbadminton is the only place i know where i can play badmin in New York, but i can't really afford the fee.

To Lazzy Buddy, here to answer your survey:

-I live in Roosevelt island, zip 10044
-Currently i'm playing about one and a half hour a week at Humanities High School
-I'm using a Genji Force Ti1200S, got it from a private seller on ebay
-So long that your club is reachable by subway in NYC , with a rate that i can afford, then i'm gonna participate
-I'm an international college student, so i can't afford very much really. About $100 yearly member is as much as i can set aside to play badmin.
Since there is so few place to play here, i really hope your club goes well.

Trungasa,

Here are 3 clubs I currently have access, which could be in "reachable" distance from your home:

1. John Dewey H.S: 9:30am - 3:30pm Sat. zip code: 11223; $100 (student, otherwise $175) per half a year. 4- courts, long term membership request (currently filled up, need to be on the waiting list)

2. Lafayette H.S: 1:30pm - 6:30pm Sat. zip code: 11223; $8/visit (if attend regularly, might qualified for some discount); 4-courts, dropin is ok.

3. Friendly Badminton Club: 7-10pm Wed, 6-10pm Sat. zip code: ??? (close to Queens Center shopping mall). $5 per visit, or $25 per month. 2- courts, but some really good players.

i think there is a club in greenwich village at Coles Sportscenter for cheap cost but it's only for NYU students, alums and affiliates

who knows where to buy badminton equipment in NYC? is there a legit badminton supplies specialist/dealership in NYC?

LazyBuddy

Local dealer: www.nycbadminton.com (authorized dealer for Yonex and Gosen). I don't think they sell equipment through internet, but u can request ur price quote through phone or email.

NYCB membership: I believe the drop in is $21 per session. If u purchase membership fee (various depend on terms, i.e. $80 for 6 months), then, the price per session is around $13-14, i think. You can contact Veronica (manager) for detail information.

Looking forward to meet you in NYCB, if u r interested. ;)

well.. this IS manhattan afterall. any type of recreation here is somewhat expensive due to the lack of space.

i doubt it's this expensive in the suburbs, or in smaller cities on the east coast.

and there doesn't seem to be as much serious badminton players on the east coast comparing to the west. you would think a big city like new york would have tons of badminton clubs and stores to choose from.

It's true that in NYC, with high labor rate and facility cost, it's harder to establish a program. However, there are still quite a few clubs (as I listed above) here and there. If ur schedule is flexible and have a car to drive around, I am sure u can still get way enough action everyday. Of course, cost might be another factor, as the public system (i.e. public schools) seems does not support us as much as on the West coast.

Serious players? Well, I can't agree on that issue. Come to NYCB (and of course, other clubs as well), u will be surprised to see how many good players we have. I am talking about ex international player(s), regional champions, local champions, etc. Usually, local school/college clubs's overall standard are not as high as these badminton clubs. ;)

Hi LazyBuddy,

After attending the club I just joined at the Lost Battalion in Queens for the second time, I am certain that this place is impossible to play a regular game without interruption. The place is just too crowded. I am looking for another venue to play and I was thinking of registering at NYCBadminton. It is kind of expensive though. Do you have any plan to organize a group thing in Queens? Count me in if you do. I lived in 11374 zipcode and work in Manhattan.

Here are the 3 clubs I currently participate:

1. NYCB: Very wide range of skill lvls, from newbie to local champ. Manager doing a great job of arrange games, so, u get chance to play with all kinda players, and most the games are relatively close in skill lvl. Club open on Tues, Wed, Fri and Sun, 3 differents sites in Manhattan. For detail, check www.nycbadminton.com.

2. John Dewey HS: Zip code 11223 (brooklyn). Recently management change, we got 8 courts on Sat, from 10:30 - 3:30 (open on 9:30 though). Membership is $150 per 3 months (12-14 sessions). Several really good players (local tourny winner), but most are decent club lvl players.

3. Friendly Club: This one is really close to ur club. We play in a church at the corner of Seaburry St. (right next to Queens Blvd) and 54th Ave. Only have 2 courts, and low ceiling. A lot of good players and very freindly. Most time are not very crowded though. Sat: 6-10pm, $5 per visit.

I think it's ok to bring ur daughter, as long as u make sure she knows to stay off court during other ppl's rally = safety issue.

The club runs between 6-10pm, and generally kinda "busy" between 7-9. If you want to teach ur daugter basic strokes, come early or leave late. During "peak time", u might consider use the off court area to hit around (others might also use it as warm up area). Ppl are very friendly over there, but we only have 2 courts. ;)

No problem, buddy. Just look for a "fat" chinese guy, 20s, with a big blue HiQua bag. Usually black shorts and white BF shirt.

The entrance is on Seaburry street, really close to 54ave. Pass through a small gate (black), and there's the entrance for the church (usually unlocked). Walk to the 2nd floor, and u will surely hear the screaming and "bang" sounds. ;)

That friendly place in queens....

Bring your own shuttle, and each person "contribute" once a while. In general, I went throught about 3-5 shuttles per session, depend on the number of games and quality of shuttles.

If you don't have shuttle with you, you can purchase from the club for $1/shuttle (America 2).

Hey Lazy Buddy, wus up,
I am in Westchester, NY. I've been playing for 10 years and I am really really good at it. I would love to find people in this are to play with. I can coach pretty well too. NYC is pretty far from here but if you want we can work something out. Let me know. Thanks.

If you want coaching (1 on 1, or group), NYCB is the place to go. If you prefer tons of practice time (assume you have the basic strokes and want more game time), I think NYCB might be a bit pricy and crowded. I prefer the Brooklyn club (John Dewey H.S) one, as they have 8 courts for 6 hrs.

Dealing with my knee injury now, and will check 2 newly opend gym (both in city) within the next several weeks. Heard one of them have 7 courts... I will post up more information after my visit, my god damn knee... :crying:

wow, NY is an expensive place to play.

In Columbus, OH, even if you purchase the membership, it is only $80 USD for 3 months, and the badminton session is every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, about 4 hours for each session.
(However, they have loose doors....so you don't have to buy the membership card to get in.... :p)

I guess I need to stay away from NY then :D

Sounds great! Sorry to hear about your long commute though. Just make sure check NYCB's page, as their sunday session (best one) won't resume until 9/19. It will surely give me several more weeks to heal my god damn knee.

I do use AIM and MSN, but AIM sometimes gives me a bit problem. I will add you on, and see if you are willing to switch to ICQ or MSN something later on. :D

1. NYCB is the best choice if you:

1.1: Prefer high skill lvl competitive games, as they have some really good players among tri-state area.

1.2: Would like to attend either group or individual training session(s).

Otherwise, I think the price might be a bit too expensive, if you just come for social purpose, or don't want to wait quite a bit time to get court time.

2. If you are more like int. lvl, and just would like to get some games going, personally, I think Brooklyn club might be a better choice.

3. NYCB has different drop in / membership price (check their site to contact). If you want to participate in training, you need to pay extra and need to schedule a date with them.

4. They have 3 different sites. I believe all are school gyms.

5. How many hrs u usually play for a week?

6. If I set a club about within 10 miles (use zip code 11365 as center), are u willing to participate? Sorry, under progress, contacting different local school gym for now. So, no detail address is available yet.

Even though, I don't expect too many ppl to answer the questions, but let me get a try, see how "poplular" badminton is in NY.

Thanks, everyone.
I live in PA, 18328, but I can play in some parts of New York that aren't too far. Right now I work in Middletown, NY 10940. I commute there for work, so that drive isn't so far.

I am thinking of trying the Spring Valley Badminton Club, which is listed on the IBF website. I found out that it is on Mondays and Fridays at 7, and has all sorts of different levels.

I am looking for people to meet up with and play, that are perhaps a little closer than that, as that is over an hour away. I am hoping for Middletown, or cities closer to the PA border. But I don't have to have a club. That would be nice, but even if I knew of a school that had courts, I could start my own club, or meet someone to play privately if anyone knew of a place.

I moved here a couple years ago from Canada. In Canada I was a competitive tournament player, and attended an International Junior Training Camp, and was going for the Future Olympians development program, before I was injured and missed a lot of play time.

I have recently decided to try and get back into it, and am looking for places to get in some good play time. I use Carlton equipment, which was purchased at a store in Canada before moving down here.

Hopefully someone will read this and we can meet up or find a club or something...

Cory

Hey lazy and everyone else,

Guys I wanted to let you all know that www.badmintonalley.com (http://www.badmintonalley.com) has some awesome Badminton equipment. I bought a new racket and shuttles from them and it's top notch stuff! The racket I bought is Yonex Muscle Power 30. It's absolutely great! So I encourage all of you out there who are looking to buy Badminton equipment to check out this site.

Ok so Lazy, are you playing yet? I'll be in the city in about two weeks to check out the Club I was talking about so maybe I will stop by NYCB. Hey, NYCB, doesn't open on Sat at all?? Cause I am going to start playing at the other club on Sat. and I was thinking that it would be great if I could stop by NYCB and play there as well. Alright take care!

Hi there Lazy,

I just want to asked, if theres a badminton gym/badminton club(s)/court near in Sunnyside, L.I.C., NY. Because for about a month from now, Im going to migrate in New York. By the way I'm Lex, from Philippines. Im playing badminton for about 4 years from now and one of the varsity player in our univeristy. I'm confused if going to bring my rackets and badminton accessories.

I'm using Yonex Armortec 700 (imitation), Yonex MP (orig.) and MMOA 808. I recommend MMOA or Ashaway because they're good substitute for the expensive Yonex.

Thanx a lot

just e-mail me:

Lex,

I believe Sunnyside, LIC is on the west part of the Queens, right? To confirm, if you can give me the zip code of ur (future) location, that will be great.

If I am correct, you are not too far from my place, which means you can check out all the clubs I am currenting playing in, if you have a car. If you have to rely on public transportation (bus, subway, etc), then, you need to let me know which one u can easily get access with, once u arrived at your "new home".

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. :)

Yeah, I am 90% fine, and start to dive a bit again. :D

NYCB does not have sessions on Sat at all. However, next sunday, 10/17, we have tourny. Feel free to stop by. ;)

NYCB does not have club session on Sat. The 10/17 tourny is on NYCB's sunday site (56th street & 2nd ave). It should be from 8:30 - 8:30, therefore, plenty of games to watch. :)

Sure, everyone is welcome to stop by and watch the tourny. I will play both MD and XD, but guess will be chopped pretty badly, unless miracle happens. :D

I don't think there will be any spare court available for regular play/practice, as we only have 6 courts, and the tourny should last pretty long. If you want to talk, a big mouth like me will always be ready. :D

The tourny was a great success, as I got some really exciting games and lucky enough to win some. :D Enjoyed the games and was quite tired as I was in the gym from 7:30am to 10:30pm.

Did not see you though, as I was busy running around for my games, as well as helping the management staff. If you happened to stop by, guess it's my fault for did not get a chance to meet you.

Hey,
I got there around 1:30 and didn't know where to find ya! I figured you were busy doing exactly what you said, runing around. I stayed there for about an hour and a half and then left. It seemed fun. There were some good players there. I am hoping to go there next sunday and play. I'll try to get there early. What time do you get there? What's the best time? Are there that many people during regular practice days? That place was crowded whewwww!

Really? I guess 1:30pm was about the time I was fighting to death in the MD game. Glad to know that at least you got to watch some good players playing.

On Sunday, the group training runs between 11:30 - 1pm, but you need to pay extra to participate. Between 1 - 1:30pm (sometimes, the gym opens a bit late), regular session will start, and it will last until 5:45 - 6pm. If you want to come, I think come right after 1 will give you a bit extra time to get warm up and 1 or even 2 extra games, as a lot of ppl won't show up for the 1st 30 min or so.

I usually help them for the group training, therefore, I should be there no later than 11:30. Looking forward to meet you next sunday then. Give me a call when you get there. :)

However, you plan to come by 11? The group training will start @ 11:30, and you need to register and pay for that. Even though the BBC website is still under construction, you can still get location, schedule and contact info from it. This is a very friendly club with
a good mix of players (beginner to advanced).
http://free.hostdepartment.com/b/brooklynbadminton/main.html (http://free.hostdepartment.com/b/brooklynbadminton/main.html)

There's NO more "1st time free walk in" in Brooklyn club. The walk in price is $12. You need to bring in ur own shuttles to contribute to the games.

I am trying to fix my computer and update the website right now. Sorry for some earlier confusion between the management staff and new comers.

I'm so glad I found this thread! I've been wanting to play badminton since moving here in NY but didn't and still don't know where to start.

Do you know a gym that offers badminton lessons? I just want a refresher course coz I haven't played in a while. I know NYC Badminton offers lessons on Sundays but it's such a hassle for me to go to the city on weekends. It's like going to work 6 days a week. I don't mind playing in the city on weekdays after work. Could any of you guys recommend a nice place in Queens that's open late?

I hope you could help me.

Thanks. :)

I think you can consider the following 3 choices:

1. NYC Badminotn (www.nycbadminton.com): They have sessions on Tues, Wed, Fri and Sun. Check for location and schedule from their site. If you aiming for lessons, I guess this is your best choice.

2. Friendly Club: Right next to Queens Center shopping mall, in a church. We open on Wed (7-10) and Sat (5-10). The environment is very friendly, and many good skill ppl. However, the facility is poor, as we only have 2 courts, low ceiling and poor light.

3. Brooklyn Badminton Club (http://free.hostdepartment.com/b/brooklynbadminton/main.html): We open on Sat from 9-4pm, 8 courts. Walk in price is $12, and bring in your own shuttle. Skill various from beginner to advance, most ppl are nice.

Hey, sorry that I took so long to respond, been really busy:rolleyes: and I usually don't post in this thread. I post in another thread that I started, it's called "Interested In Starting A Club...." So do check that as well. As for the place I used to go to, well all the players there were guys. I was the only girl. They were really good players and all but I don't know, it just wasn't fun enough for me. So I stopped going there. If you read the other thread, I have posted some info there about attempting to find places in westchester, preferrably in Yonkers. If you can help and make phone calls etc to gyms, schools etc in westchester area that would be great. White plains, valhalla, hastings, dobbs ferry aren't that far from Yonkers. So those places would be fine too. I know, that ymca or was it ywca, is asking for like $150/hr. If we have enough ppl, $150 is nothing really! Email me if you would like at robina1981@yahoo.com. Look forward to hearing from ya!:D

$150 per hr??? How big is the gym? To me, unless u can set up at least 10-12 courts there, it would be very expensive. However, 10 courts means u need at least 60-80+ members to get the club running smoothly.

well, lets see, I have no idea how big the gym is or anything, someone told me about it. You are right, we would need a lot of people to run it smoothly. Usually, we don't arrange games. This way, everyone has some chance to play with everyone else. Feel free to join the games, and very soon, u will find out which particular group more likely fits for ur lvl. But again, don't worry too much about the skill stuff, we are all friends. ;)

In the past you used to play at Northport and Commack HS during the weekdays. Do they still have it and do you still go there. Also how is the Brooklyn Badminton Club doing nowadays with the increased lease on the space. Do you welcome new members or is the place pretty much packed. How much is it for the membership. Is it still $90 for three months. Also i played badminton for a very long time but i'm still trying to improve and correct my mistakes. I live in Flushing,Queens and eventhough we have like a million Chinese/Hong Kong/Taiwanese people living in heavily concentrated areas like Flushing and Chinatown,Manhattan how come its so hard to find more badminton clubs. There might be around here somewhere but somebody's not making it public so we can all know :( . Hmm i wonder if the Koreans have a place to play in Bayside. If anyone who lives in the NYC area and is part of the asian community could you please let me know. I'll be happy to pay the fee.

Hi can you tell me more information about the Stuyvesant HS that you play at in Manhattan. I went to that site and it didn't mention Badminton. How many courts do they have, what days and times do they play, on a regular night how many people go there, what is the fee, and is it open to the public or do you have to be a student, alumni, faculty of the school in order to play there. Also i go to the NYC Badminton on fridays, can you tell me if the Alfred E. Smith recreational center is a good place to play or the people there are too few and not competitive.

Yikes i'm afraid you found out who i am. Lets keep this to ourselves hehe...Today is monday and no i did not stay home sunday to recover from the ten plus hours of badminton crammed into a day and a half. I went to play badminton at the Thai place with Apitat. If the last game had gone on for another two more points Apitat was about to collapse from pure exhaustion. Perhaps the badminton weekend tour of duty had caught up to him. It so happens that sunday was also someone's birthday and badminton was interupted in the middle of the session for a good half hour or so. Too bad for me and Apitat we were intentionally sabotaged by our competitors with extra helpings of cake and ice cream. I don't know how you managed to keep this weekend lifestyle but i guess i already know the answer because i still look foward till the next badminton day eventhough everytime i walk around i feel like i'm walking on bone instead of the fatty cushion under my feet. So do you play on fridays to sundays or do you also play on tuesdays at NYCB and/or wednesdays at the church. Too bad Wu is leaving the area soon. We made a really good doubles team winning every game except one. Hey i just thought of an idea. We should try to carpool more often and maybe print t-shirts that say "Team No Hope" or "Lazybuddies". What do you think? I like the idea.

In general, I play in Garden city on Tues, but this week (today) I think I will stop by NYCB if I don't have to stay for OT.

1. Originally when i put up this site, I used very very fundamental HTML and front page. Once others taking over (2-3 months ago?), they did a much better job in the layout. Of course, the main contents are similar, but with more pics.

2. Errrr.... don't want to say too much to get this thread locked... :D Just for your information, most of them are HS students, who used to attend regularly on Sat. Not sure why most of them did not show up lately, maybe due to final coming up, or the weather is too good to stay inside. ;)

Thank you for complimenting the site. It took quite a while to get all those little things in place.
About the size of the pictures, I was requested to make it smaller so that it can be downloaded faster.
If you think there's anything i can improve on the site, let me know. I will try my best to get them there.

Keep up with the good work, and might consider update the pictures once we get more events/tournies going on. One suggestion is to get a link for pictures on the homepage banner. ;)

Hi i live in Flushing,Queens and i play badminton so much that i injured myself haha. What is your level of play and how long have you been playing? Are you a girl because i'm looking for a mixed doubles partner for an upcoming tournament haha. You should try Queens Borough Community College in Bayside www.qcc.cuny.edu (http://www.qcc.cuny.edu) on wednesdays 1-3pm at the gym (you can try to walk in and play since they don't check ID's that much), www.friendlybadminton.com (http://www.friendlybadminton.com) offers play at a church near Queens Center Mall on wednesday and saturday nights. The Brooklyn Badminton Club is very far away near Coney Island. Try going there if you have a car or want to take an hour long subway ride but the place has eight courts.

If you have to limit ur choice in queens, as EastcoastAZN suggested, www.friendlybadminton.com is the choice. In August, the church gym (next to queens center) is the only place to be open. After Sept 10th, their Jamaica HS site will be re open, which is a much better facility. ;)

Personally, I never went to QCC. I heard it's only open for students / faculties / staff of QCC. The contact info on line was way out of dated, and only a fax machine "trying" to pick up the calls. :(

If you have car access, highly recommand brooklyn club or friendly club (Jamaica H.S. after sept 10). Both club have all lvls of players, and you should be able to find ur own comfortable group easily.

Hi there is no badminton at QCC in the summer but there will be starting in september when the school is in the fall session. I have played there before many times and i helped the professor run the badminton class there also. I know very well since i took chinese mandarin class over there as a student for enrichment and i participated in their badminton and dance classes. They have a beginner badminton class that teaches you the basics in both the fall and spring semesters. The teacher is Korean and the classes are very popular over there. It is always packed and there's a good mix of people from all nationalities. However that instructional class is in the daytime so i doubt anybody with a day job will be able to attend it. Also there are open recreational badminton club hours every week on wednesdays from 1-3pm. Usually there are few people there and you can practice all you want. Whenever there are people that show up for the club hours it's usually chinese and indians. Many people that play basketball and volleyball over there like to watch the shuttle fly back and forth really fast. They never knew backyard badminton could be this exciting. Most of the Chinese people there are in the gym lobby playing ping pong. Whenever i have a day off on tuesdays or wednesdays i may stop by QCC in the fall but go in at your own risk because sometimes they check school ID. Students there can borrow racquets and plastic shuttles.

Now i recommend www.brooklynbadminton.com (http://www.brooklynbadminton.com) www.friendlybadminton.com (http://www.friendlybadminton.com) www.nycbadminton.com (http://www.nycbadminton.com) You can find both me and Lazybuddy at all these places and we'll sign autographs but no pictures please :p. Oh yea Cardozo HS has open courts for badminton too...i asked my friend's younger cousin who goes there and she said that the security guard doesn't check at all and he doesn't care...so if you have a young looking face and a racquet. You can try to go in from the back door and ask the kids where is the gym after 3pm. I think their badminton open courts go from 3pm(after school) to 530pm.;)

Wow! Contributing to the forums at almost 2am? You really can string racquets very fast. Its either you have free time now after finishing all your stringing jobs or you're just taking a break and my racquet will eventually give you about one hour of sleep:D

are there really not that much places to play here in the NY/NJ area?

im moving to New Jersey and scouring places to play and really not finding that much luck. :(

i guess the sports hasn't picked up yet here in the east not unlike in the west.

anyways, my possible places to stay will be @ Jersey City and/or Ridgewood if there's anybody who can point me out on some of the places to play that's near those places please let me know.

thanks

Check the threads for places in New Jersey. Or send a email to jackkau@yahoo.com. There are several locations under CJSC. I just went to Union last Sunday. It's not great but it's fine and I am expecting more better players than those shown up.

Friendly club (Jamaica H.S.) location will be re-opened on 10/1. I believe the training is from 9:30-11:30, and regular play is from 11:30 - 3:30 (or 11 to 3:30). Their staff came up with some new membership choices, which you can contact them through www.friendlybadminton.com

For the regular session membership, I believe u have 4 choices:

1. $90 for 3 months membership

2. $35 for monthly membership

3. $50 for 5 guest pass (expire every 3 months)

4. $12 per walk in

There will be NO badminton in Friendly (Jamaica HS) location on Sat 10/1, due to school problem (they used the gym for storage). If you want to play, you can still stop by the church gym at night, or brooklyn club at day time.

Hope not too many ppl will make a false trip due to school's late infor.... :(

LazyBuddy

I don't think they have regulars as young as 12, but they do have quite a few HS students there as well. The good thing about BBC is that they have 8 courts, and players lvl range from newbies to local champion lvl. Therefore, it's quite easy to get enough court time to either practice on ur own, or get into some competitive games.

You can contact them via www.brooklynbadminton.com, if you need to ask any more questions. :)

1. Where do u live? I live in Babylon, about a half mile from the train station. (11702)

2. Where do u play - I grew up playing in Miller Place, I'm going to try to go to the Stony Brook university club now. Oh, also did a stint at RPI badminton club while I was attending school there.

3. What kinda racket u use? - HL-8800

4. Where did u get ur racket - My former coach used to sell raquets, so I got it from him.

5. How many hrs u usually play for a week? Recently, none. Hoping to change that though.

6. If I set a club about within 10 miles (use zip code 11365 as center), are u willing to participate? Largely depends on location, time, and cost but if things work out, sure.

7. How much u can afford for member fee? - yearly is more convenient, and I can afford a pretty decent sized member fee.

Sorry to hear this. I can be considred as a regular, but won't be there for the next 1-2 weeks, due to my friends' wedding.

The entrance we use, is not on Ave X. The entrance is on Stillwell Ave, about 20-30 yards away from the intersection of Stillwell and Harway. About 50 yards away from Bay50th subway station. There are 2 large steel fence gate, right under the "curve" of subway bridge... Once u come in the gate, just go straight down, u will see some parking space along the right side, then, a small parking lot at the end, right before the football field. The gym we use, is on the left hand corner of the small parking lot.

Hope my direction is clear enough. Please check "direction" in www.brooklynbadminton.com for detail.

Thursday,Nov. 17, 2005 Chinese badminton coach criticizes new scoring rules
BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- A Chinese coach has expressed concern that the new scoring system to be adopted by the International Badminton Federation (IBF) would make the doubles events less spectacular."The change is designed to shorten the duration of the game so as to be friendly to the live broadcast, but it will bear great influence on the game, especially the doubles, "Li Yongbo, head coach of the Chinese national team, was quoted as saying on Monday's China Sports Daily. "The new rules would undermine the beauty of the doubles competition. It is unwise for the IBF to adopt the changes without adequate evaluation beforehand."Under the new system, each rally will be awarded a point, while the current system awards one point only to the serving player who wins a rally. The news rules also adopt a format of best-of-three games and a21-point system for all the events. Currently, a winner is decided after 15 points for men's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles with 11 points for women's singles. However, Li showed confidence in his squad to well adapt to the new rules, which will come into effect at the World Cup to be held in China next month. "Despite the new rules, China will keep their leading position in world badminton," he said.

Hello!!

I'm french student and I come in NY for 6 month. I play badminton for 8 years in Competition in France. I would like really to find a club where I can train. I don't know exactly the different conditions about the fee, I think it is not the same than in France. Are there private and public clubs?

I have had some information about NYbadminton club on the website. Is there another clubs in Manatthan?

I really want to find a club and to meet new partners.

Thanks

Krystenne

If you live in Manhattan, and don't have a car, I will say, NYCB might be the best choice so far. Of course, the price is not that cheap, but you will meet all kinda players throughout different levels. Sorry to hear that you made a trip for nothing. However, I did not receive any email notification regarding to closure for Jan. I did not go there last Sat, so I can't confirm.

What time did you go there? Usually, if you go between 10am-3:30pm, I am pretty sure the gym door should be opened. The gym is deep inside the gate, right at the corner of a small parking lot (right in front of the football field).

1. www.nycbadminton.com (Manhattan locations):

They play on Tues, Wed, Fri and Sunday in 3 different locations. Personally, I believe the Sunday one is the best, with the better gym and less ppl. Check their site for detail information. I believe drop in is around US$25 per session. Bring you racket, and shuttles are provided by the club.

2. www.queensbadminton.com (John Bowne HS, Flushing):
This is a sub-brance from NYCB, and they play on Tues, Thurs and Sat afternoon. Good gym, but attendance greatly varies. Sometimes, it could be packed, some times, not many ppl at all. Drop in is around $11, I think. Bring your own racket and shuttles.

3. www.friendlybadminton.com (Jamaica HS)
Sat 9:30 - 3:30. Accessable by F train (as you live in Forrest Hills). Contact them for detail schedule.

4. www.friendlybadminton.com (Hoboken, NJ)
Sounds far, but many ppl from NY carpool going over there. Quite a few members meet around Queens Center area, and carpool. Time is sunday afternoon (12:30-1:30 training, 1:30 - 5:30 practice)

5. www.brooklynbadminton.com

Per players' request, I believe they extend the time to 10:30pm now. So, 4 hrs of playing time, means more games and more fun.

I was there for the grand opening, the school was a bit confusing to find, but plenty of parking space (street parking). The height of the ceiling is alright, but the light was a bit annoying. However, if you usually play in HS gyms, you should be able to get use to it very fast. It turned out to be quite a lot of ppl showed on that night, so, quite a few games with the old buddies and new comers.

A good alternate choice to social and competitive games (overall level is pretty good) in Queens area. ;)

Went to the site on Tues night. The gym is huge with 8 courts (even though, courts a bit close to each other), and the floor is nice. Parking is very easy, with the parking lot and the almost emptied street at night. :D The main problem is the lighting is kinda bright, and one or 2 courts have basketball hoops right next by. Therefore, it's possible you might lose a shuttle to the net or basketball board. ;)

Overall, a nice alternate gym for the summer. About 30-40 ppl showed up on the 1st night, therefore, plenty of games for everyone. I expect a bit more ppl will show up in the near future.

I'm relatively new to the badminton scene in NY area so still trying get over the fact that it cost $25 for a single drop-in session in Manhattan.

Any advice on places to play in Manhattan for less than that? <<Besides AES ($50/yr membership) and YMCA ($15/drop-in)>>

The price in the city is just that high.

The alternate choices are:

1. Play in clubs in Queens or Brooklyn, as they are cheaper ($10-16 range), but you need to provide your own shuttles.

2. Join membership in NYCB (mahattan locations). You can pay $200 for 1 year, and each time will be $15 (shuttle provided by club). It's a better deal, if you come to play very often.

However, in the city, getting average deal below $20 per session, is almost impossible. :o

shuttles are provided but they don't last at all .... i tried complaining or asking for another shuttle but i ended up bringing my own .... i see other people are doing it as well .... now i know why i meet a lot of people who are 'ex' NYCB members .... i guess i still go there because there are not that many clubs around our area .... i smile everytime i go to cali and pay $7-8 drop in fee

Hehehehehe... don't expect too much from the "free" ones.:p

Usually, you can ask for 2nd one, if not too many ppl showing up or they have some new stocks coming in. :o If a lot of ppl showing up, or they are low in stock, I understand what you mean then. Of course, the easiest way is to forget about the free ones, and get your own better ones. I know a lot of ppl who prefer better games, will use their own.

I haven't been for that long but totally agree with LazyBuddy. LOL!

Just curious, has anyone here actually done the math and see if it's worthwhile gathering a bunch of people and rent a gym in NYC?

I'm sure it's more complicated than that but it never hurts to challenge status quo once in a while! :D

The rent in NY is very high, therefore, rent a court for your own group is almost impossible. If you have just a few, chance to get a small gym with only 1 or 2 courts is hard (besides some church gyms). If you have a lot, then we are talking about hundreds of $$$ per night, too much investment and too much risk to manage.

I did heard there were a few small groups (mainly in long island area) did rent some church gyms or so. However, then your choices of games will be greatly limited. Therefore, most of them I believe just dead down, and a lot of such players joined open gym like us now. :o

If you plan to visit any sites of NYCB, check www.nycbadminton.com for updated schedule and location. Best way is to give them a call before leaving home, and ask for directions and fees. Their walk in fee is on the expensive side, consider become a member if you like the environment. Ask them for detail membership vs. walkin difference. Robert Wagner has only 4 courts, and 1 is used for training. Therefore, you might have to expect some waiting. I think their Tuesday location (18 street) have more courts, therefore, more games available.

If you live in brooklyn, you can also try www.brooklynbadminton.com, they play on Sat from 9:30 - 3:45, with 8 courts. Very easy to get there by car or subway (D train @ bay 50 street).

Both places have fairly large crowd, and players level various from beginner to ex-international level. Talk to the managers, and they should be able to arrange you some decent game around your level. Better have your own gears, especially shoes and racket. NYCB provides shuttles, while BBC not. You need to bring your own and contribute to the game, or purchase on the spot.

Overall, there should be some good games for you, if you join the right crowd. However, expect to pay some top $$$, as this is NY. ;)

There's always AES (Alfred E. Smith) that's open Mon & Fri evenings 6-9pm; Tue daytime. It gets a bit crowded at times but it's almost "free" relative to the other places. $50/year. BYOB(irdie). Mostly beginner to intermediate players.

Good luck! :)

Personally, I prefer Brooklyn Badminton club @ saturday. They open from 9:30 - 3:30, 8 courts. You need to bring your own rackets and shuttles, and walk in is $16, i believe.

They do have subway (D train @ Bay50st), but kinda far from your place. Top of my head, I think you can take 4,5,6 to grand central, then take 7 train for 1 stop to 42nd street, 5th ave (bryant park),then transfer D train (brooklyn direction) from there. I think if for weekend, the trip might be at least 1.5 hrs or so.

I will confirm my schedule later of this week. Looking forward to see you. :p

alright lazybuddy. where is the exact address of the court? i can ask directions from the port authority people. i'll see you this sat.

The address is 50 Ave X, but that's not the entrances we use for the gym. Once you come out of subway station (D train, Bay 50th street), look on your right (if facing school fence), and go to right about 20 yards or so, and you should see a metal fence gate (right under the curve of subway bridge). Just go all the way in, and the gym is on the left, right by the small parking lot.

So far, I should be available this saturday. I usually be there around 10am - 2pm. I will double confirm with you regarding my schedule, by later this week. ;)

I am no where near a top player, and single is definitely not my game for sure. :D

Even though, BBC does have 8 courts, but if you do want singles, you have to either come really early when they just open (9:30am), or stay late at the last minute (3:30). Base on my own experience, the 1st 2 hours (before 11:30) and last hour (2:30 and later) usually means non-stop playing time, and in between usually need some waiting time, as it's the peak. Usually, they don't allow you to play singles, unless there are quite a few empty courts.

I am a regular for brooklyn badminton club. However, the upcoming 1 to 2 weeks, I can't show up, as I am working in my new apartment right now. I should go back by mid June or so. Hopefully we can meet up and have a few games, if you don't mind about my low skill level. :p

BBC is a very friendly place, and we have 8 courts and players range from beginners to regional finalists. Therefore, it's not hard to find the group you feel comfortable with. When you 1st come, introduce yourself to Sunny (manager), and he should be able to pair you up with the right group.
