UPSETS ALL OVER

The AVIVA SINGAPORE SUPER SERIES 2009 tournament has to be the most unpredictable of the Super Series tournaments todate.

In the MS, the following happened:-
No 1 lost to an unseeded player
No 2 lost to a qualifier
No 3 lost to an unseeded player
No 4 lost to an unseeded player
The final was contested between 2 unseeded players with BCL winning.

In the WS, the following happened:-
No 1 beat No 3 & 8 according to seeding for ZM who won the title
No 2 lost to an unseeded player
No 4 lost to an unseeded player.

The MD produced the following results:-
No 1 lost to an unseeded pair AC/NR in the final
No 2 lost to an unseeded pair
No 3 lost to an unseeded pair
No 4 lost to No 1 according to form.

The WD had the following results:-
No 1 lost to unseeded; this unseeded pair went on to contest the final
No 2 lost to No 5
No 3 lost to No 5
No 4 lost to unseeded
No 5 went on to win the title beating the unseeded pair.

The results of the XD are as follows:-
No 1 lost to No 6
No2 lost to No 5
No 3 lost to No 6
No 4 lost to No 5
The No 5 pair ZB/MJ won the final.

The results go to show that seedings may count for nothing as on their good days the unseeded players or qualifiers can beat the best ranked players.
This was particularly embarrassing for MK/HS who lost badly and in quick time to AC/NR.
It behoves the top-seeded players to be on their toes at all times and not to take the unseeded players and qualifiers for granted.

Hopefully, the DJARUM INDONESIA SUPER SERIES 2009 tournament seedings go according to form.

She's a smart girl. She saw it coming that's why she quickly retired.
I didn't know the Spore crowd can do such damage to higher seeds by just being fair to the underdogs.
This goes to show that crowd support, even with just appreciative applause for great play, motivates even unfancied players to great heights.Most of the time top players get top support that's why they win;unheralded players hardly get support that's why they play miserable and lose.

In Singapore, the underdogs may actually get more support than their higher ranked opponents. In fact, the European MDs played rather well and it's good to have Europe win the MD title and how they won! A most unlikely ENG MD outfoxing and thrashing top class INA MD.(But any MD who defeats KKK/TBH usually gotta be pretty good so Rexy's standard can be the gold standard!)

We have probably the best SS to date in terms of quality matches. Many matches went to rubber and were closely fought. The Spore crowd earned it because it supported players on both sides. I remember MAS MD GTC/TBH trailing badly, then someone in the crowd cheered for them and they went on a roll. It was incredible. One fan making his support known and that energised and motivated the players to put in more effort and not give up.

As fans we can make the biggest difference to how well they can play.So make yourself count in tournaments.

Actually, BWF now have changed the WR format to pdf files, more troublesome than last time, retire better. :D:D
The full list of lower rank beat higher rank is much longer, imagine, sure headache do. I still do it, not a complete one with full names, scores & all, only a draft with lots of shortforms here & there, for my own viewing pleasure only. :p

ZM's age is definitely a factor and it is very taxing to compete in two consecutive SS tournaments especially so soon after ZM's 3-set final in the Aviva Singapore SS on Sunday 14/6/09.
It's sad but always a possibility that one could be a hero in one tournament and a zero in the next.
