Just to announce a discovery.
Compared to previous years, the venue is all spruced up and more organised.
There's plenty to buy. Yonex souvenir shirts of past tournaments. The harimau (tiger) motif of this tournament is tempting.
Had a chat with Rexy. There's too much to talk but not enough time for it.
By the way, to prevent misleading, the teh tarik this year is terrible. Different vendor. Food is still good but be warned;my standard's questionable.
The matches are worth coming by. More to look out for new talents and realise there's hope for the future of badminton. Some will make it; some will not. Who would have known five years ago that LCW will be World No 1 today?

..yeah, who would've thought, 6 yrs ago, LYD would be one the top men's doubles players today, if not arguably the best?..;)

the crowd in the JB Stadium is fantastic and they supported the Malaysian Players whether they win or lose. Of course the crowd hero is our Dato Lee Chong Wei. Lee Chong Wei is humble despite his fame and no wonder he is popular.

The Yonex shop selling the T shirts are reasonably prices but the tickets to the stadium is expensive with the 1st round u have to pay $10 for morning session and $10 for the afternoon. Tomorrow will be $20 for morning and $20 for the nite. Season ticket are price at $70, if can watch till final then it is worthwhile buying season ticket.

Meet up with alot of players. The Chinese players are well sized and they are tall and well built. Saina is also a humble girl and she is intelligent and she knows what she wants. She will be popular with the fans.

I would say, LYD, it was obvious as early as 5 years ago,he would be a star because of his movement and his court intelligence.
But with LCW,it wasn't obvious to me at all. He had to deal with so many non-badminton problems before he finally showed great badminton. The greatest thing about LCW is how he has been able to surmount all the odds to become and stay on as WR1. Better yet, even playing at his present level, he's still improving and with lots of room to do so.
Sorry, no pics. Jennifer is gonna take a long time to produce them, what with her zero IT skills and my email-only skills.
Loh would be the best person, with his gift of photography and caption details.

Agree with Gemini12 the crowd has been fantastic.
CL is gonna have a chance here because fans here are appreciative of good badminton, regardless of nationality. Actually because of his 'rookie' status,CL got applauded when he played very well yesterday.
Even with 'recession-insensitive' prices, the crowd size was good for Round 1.So expect it to grow. There's enough excellent matches in store to be worth the trip. Plus, of course, the attractive Yonex deals. What you save on Yonex will more than pay for the tickets!

..5 yrs ago LYD was only 15 yrs young. A year removed when he first played in the 2003 U.S. Open. I don't recall anything of significant from him other than him sitting down with his buddies & watching Tony G. play in the MD Final. Did you see him play 5 yrs ago??..
LCW, i remember the first time i saw him play, abt 3 yrs ago, if i recall. I thought he had the movements and court intelligence. Just not as consistent.

It must be when LYD was 16 plus 1 years old,so when he was 17, being fast tracked by coach TKH. Now i know why i failed history. So that must be 3 years ago.
It's like CHN's Ma Jin. She's just so uncanny in her opponent reading. Most of the time she gets it so right, she earns the privilege of being a minimum-effort winner.
Oh, LCW was so inconsistent 3 years ago;life was so hard for him for he had to play against a team. Now the team's not so consistently linked, maybe that's why he's more consistent. That tough period turned out to be good training for him.

How can we compare LYD and LCW of five years ago? Five years ago, LCW was above 20 while LYD was only in his mid-teens.

Having said that, LYD emerged very early. He already got attention when he first won his World Junior title, and that was when he was still eligible for the next World Juniors.

- Yes, LYD was a teeny-bopper (and probably was singing & dancing to the beat of 50 Cents, Clay Aiken and Gwen Stefani) and LCW was beginning his international rise, 5 yrs ago. But i think, the point of bringing them up is to see how far both players have arrived to where they are today; which really, no one expected, at least 5 yrs ago.
- Yes, LYD probably had that "look" and "attention" back then. But at the same time, who would've thought he would win an OG Gold title so quickly, even before he reached 19 yrs of age. An age where most "juniors" would still be competing in the WJC or just passed the WJC level. There are other WJC winners back then, but where are some of them now?? if they're still around, what have they accomplished??

Lee Yong Dae was born on Sep 11, 1988. So, technically, he won the Olympics Gold Medal before he reached 20 years of age ;)

I would say that Lee Yong Dae is an exceptional case as he was already playing in senior tourneys since 2006. Even WJC winners from CHN do not have that much exposure to major tourneys given the fact that there are so many seniors ahead of them.

The ticket price was reduced from RM20 to RM10 maybe due to complaint from the crowd. Once again the crowd came and cheer not only for the home players but also the international players.

Its is great atmostphere here and suddenly i felt that if the World Junior is held here, it seem more appropriate.

Considering that he was already regarded as a rare talent within the KOR team and reached the Final of the World Championships 2007 and All-England 2008 at the age of 19, surely, the expectation was for him to continue the good trend to the Beijing Olympics 2008.

I remember that Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae was the overwhelming favorite within BC to win the Men's Doubles Gold Medal, at 29.86%. So, there's a certain expectation from some of us (the list includes abedeng) that the KOR pair will deliver the Gold. Alas, they failed in the first round. The eventual Gold and Silver Medallists shared the second-spot at 20.50%.

Who is Candra's younger bro? Rendra?

But how abt 5-6 yrs ago, when LYD was still a chap singing and dancing to the beat of Clay Aiken and Gwen Stefani??..;)

Naaah, LYD got more Korean stars to sing and dance to beside them.. Hmm probably Rain. Or BoA. He doesn't look like he listens to Clay Aiken.. :p *way off topic*

Oh, thanks again for the lovely pics epileatheral!

Yup,the handsome young guy (hehe) partnering Candra ;). In press interview, Candra said he wants to guide & help his bro for a year bf he(Candra) retires as player.

Oh.. Rendra is Chandra's brother? I didn't know that. They don't look similar. Well, he still has a long way to go. I noticed Chandra got tad a bit frustrated by Rendra's performance. Hah.. reminds me of partnering my elder brother who's a better player than me, I get the lecturing all the time.

Well, Rendra Wijaya was partnering Fran Kurniawan for the majority of last year and they won quite a number of titles, including the Dutch Open GP. In fact, they managed to rise up to at least the top 20 in the World Ranking Table.

Candra decides to teach younger brother Rendra the ropes

JOHOR BARU: Brotherly love has prompted doubles specialist Candra Wijaya (pic) of Indonesia to make his first international appearance with the younger Rendra in the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold championships.
The 34-year-old Candra will partner Rendra for a year to give an additional push to his brother’s badminton career.

The 25-year-old Rendra has been without a partner since his two-year partnership with Fran Kurniawan ended last year.

The duo won five international titles last year — the tournaments in Austria, Finland and Spain, the Indonesia Challenge and the Dutch Open.

Candra hopes that his partnership with his brother would take flight, starting with the GP Gold tournament here.

“I have never partnered him before to play in an international tournament. For now, he is out of the national team and he needs my help. My time is limited as a player and I have to help him now,” said Candra.

“I hope to pass on my experience and knowledge of the game to him. Hopefully, after a year, he will get a new partner and he will be able to make a name for himself.”

In the GP Gold tournament here, Candra-Rendra will take on Malaysians Lim Khim Wah-Ong Jian Guo in the first round tomorrow. If they win, they are set to play against second seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong.

“It will be good if we can get a chance to play against Koo-Tan. It will give us a better indication of where we stand,” said Candra, who arrived here from Japan after participating in a professional badminton league.

“I have had a chance to train together with my brother in Jakarta before I left for Japan. We can combine well and hopefully we will get good results.”

I don't know much about cars. But on Sat, Koo/Tan drove off in a BMW coupe. On Sun, LCW drove off with the same.

I asked TCS about their training schedule because of LCW's comment that they put in 60 hours a week.
Well, it's 6.30 to 10.30am Mon to Sat and then 3 to 6pm Mon to Fri. That's not even 40 hours a week. Even if LCW bump up his training for certain tournaments, it won't even reach 60 hours. LCW must be having them on so LYB would panic and get CHN to put in 70 hours!

Hehe...yup, it is just like a 9 to5 job [abt 40 hr week], except they wield a racket instead of a pen.
Ya, either LCW couldn't count properly or he is trying to play mind games with the chinese ....:D

I asked Rexy why he broke up Hoon/Ong when they were showing signs of performing well in the long run. it seems they both claimed discomfort partnering when queried about poor finishing. Well,if that's not the real reason, then they are paying for it. Look how badly both have been doing with new partners.

At least you can how the food is prepared...in restaurant, you can't see them cook so you may think it is clean. When I think of MAS food, it is the hawker stuff...here in the west, it is the same old restaurant stuff, I rather cook at home myself even though my cooking sucks. Now, pass me a plate of satay, kangkung, grill chicken wings and ikan bakar and wash it all down with a young coconut and cendol...darn, can only dream about those stuff here:D:p
