I think we can reasonably expect 'regular' participants from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, just like past New Zealand Opens... Last year [NZ Open was in October, I think] was a bit unpleasant for the Indonesians because the National Team was disbanded and INA players who want to go to NZ had to finance themselves...

this is a huge improvement compared to last year's line up (5 players only from INA)

hopefully other countries will send their players as well..

btw, do you guys think that KLRC will ask all of the sponsored players to come? that'd be awesome, cos we'd get Lars/Jonas, Andrew Smith, Zhou Mi, etc.. :)

It should be more fun for the NZ audience if not all of the seeded players are Asians... I actually prefer that NZ win one title... Badminton in NZ will grow better if there are local heroes... ;)

Yes for Indonesian men players but not for Msia:(. Malaysia men single, except for LCW and WCH, can not catch up with the progress shown by players from other countries. It it even more sad when we look back to the history book, M'sia players had won two and entered one final in the last three years in which Lee Tseung Seng were the two time winners. But this year, M'sia players are served as whipping boys to other countries than to challenge the title and LTS is not even played in order to avoid possible further embarassment before WC after the defeat to India player in Aust Open. But I don't think it will make any difference to his result in WC. On the other hand, it is envious to see so many Indonesian men players coming up the ranks. :o

I was just informed [from the INA contingent in NZ] that Hayom has early signs of the flu. His body is not at full strength right now... :( But I don't believe Hayom will make any statements that will make him sound like a sore-loser... :p

Ok, with Hayom out of the picture this week, it is time for Andre and Adit to shine! If Adit can defeat his IND competitor tomorrow, he can realistically go to the SF and face Chan Yan Kit in the top draw. In the bottom draw, I see an Andre Kurniawan vs. Andrew Smith SF coming up...

for andre, he has to beat andrew smith and keep his position in top 20.

It's a nice win for Fransiska Ratnasari as she beat the 6th seed Sekiya Mayu in straight-sets 21-18, 21-12. She will now face Aprilia Yuswandari for a place in the last 8. I think Nana can beat Aprilia.

Maria Febe Kusumastuti also continues her good form as she will face Rena Wang, again should be an easy match for her. She will be tested by Ayane Kurihara [8] tomorrow.

Lindaweni Fanetri will face the 3rd seed Sayako Sato in the next round.

All in all, I expect the 2 WS players from PB Djarum to progress to the QF.

As expected, ALL the Pelatnas WS players have been eliminated by R16. Only Yoga Pratama in MS still survives, but he faces a tough test later today from Aditya Prakash.

2 Japanese WS players will be the opponents for the 2 remaining Djarum WS players. Sayako Sato [3] will face Fransiska Ratnasari, while Ayane Kurihara [8] will face Maria Febe Kusumastuti [4]. 2 QF finishes from Nana marks a small step in the right direction and I do think her performance this year is much better than during her Pelatnas time.

Andre Kurniawan Tedjono will also have a tough Japanese opponent in Koichi Saeki.

Just back from watching the games...
i believe i have prob seen the most unbelieveable thing in badminton

Changing a racquet in the middle of the match

and it also happened 2X!!!!

1st game: MD
Kumar and Thomas [1] IND vs Windarto and Wirawan IND
In the 2nd or 3rd game, one of the indo pair rushed in to change his racquet in the middle of the rally while his partner covered 4 him.. tho they lost that point

2nd game: MD
Gan Teik Chai and Tan Bin Shen [3] MAS vs Mccarthy and Veeran
In the 2nd game, i think 13th or 14th point 4 the malaysians, teik chai rushed to his racquet bag, tossed out his racquet and pulled a new racquet to use and went on to win the point.

BUT bad prob.. the racquet he tossed went all the way to the next court, almost going into the playing area.. and well, the service judge of dat game gave him a warning

Andre Kurniawan Tedjono is in the SF after defeating Yoga. One of my friends thought Andre cannot play well after his 82 minute marathon yesterday. But Andre proved him wrong... ;) Andre will play a rematch with Wong Wing Ki who defeated him last week in Melbourne. WWK was good enough to beat Andrew Smith in straight sets... He is very dangerous....

The Japanese players are doing well at this 2009 NZ Open GP.
My guesses of 'Who will make it into the Finals'?

Mens Singles:.
1. Chan Yan Kit [1]
2. Andre Kurniawan [2]
Both should be more prepared now, after having made earlier exits at the Australian Open GP last week.

Womens Singles:
1. Eriko Hirose [5]
2. Maria Febe Kusumastuti [4]
EH is looking fresh and in form. Unsure if MFK is now getting tired. Let's hope she can make it into another round; into the Finals.

Mens Doubles:
1. Gan Teik Chai / Tan Bin Shen [3]
2. Hirokatsu Hashimoto / Norijasu Hirata [4]
Looks like GTC/TBS are in great form recently. And HH/NH have been doing quite well in this tournament.

Womens Doubles:
1. Chan Tsz Ka / Tse Ying Suet [1]
2. Anneka Feinya Agustine / Anisa Wahyuni [2]
Looks like the top 2 seeds will make it into the Finals.

Mixed Doubles:
1. Yohan Hadikusumo / Chau Hoi Wah [1]
2. Yogendran Krishnan / Anita Raj Kaur
It looks like this HKG pair is getting better and better. Perhaps, the MAS pair could upset the 7th seed (Kurniawan / Zebadiah).

I didn't see Noluckjim yesterday.
Andre's match was very exciting, from set 1 to set 3 the point are very close and alot of time, same point and just increasing 1 by 1 from both side.

Hi. I was wondering if you saw Erica Pong playing. The Australians must be feeling encouraged by her good form.

Some positives for NZ - some of the mixed doubles & Michelle Chan & Rachel Hindley doing well in the women's doubles. When I said earlier that I was surprised by some of the seeding, I would have expected this duo to get seeding ahead of Gregory/O'Connor. I guess the ranking systems will always produce some odd results. :)

Good photos Jim- I felt like I was there.

my prediction for final.. (very tricky)

MS
After got beaten last week, i think it's time for these two to give their A game and progress to final
CYK vs Andre

WS
This one is pretty hard to tell, but Febe is likely to win her match tonight.
Febe vs Sayaka

MD
The MAS pair will definitely progress, but 50:50 for the other match
Tan/Gan vs Edo/Lingga

WD
This one is pretty obvious
Anneke/Anisa vs Chan/Tse

XD
I heard that Tantowi/Richi beat Yohan before, so might be rooting for them.
For the other match, again, 50:50, but I'll go for Fran and Pia

I think, at this time, it's better for her to stay in Djarum. Djarum will send her in so many tourneys depends on her performance. And it's very good for her to gain her experience and winning mentality.

If she has been ready to break super series tourneys, I think, that's the best time for her to enter Pelatnas...

Hayom Rumbaka also takes this way. Pelatnas had called him for 3 times. But, he always denied after seeing at the condition of Nugroho Andi. He stays in Djarum until now rather than Pelatnas, so he can gain more international matches experiences.

There seems to be a marked improvement in the standard of play for Hong Kong's men single. Tedjono also defeated in straight sets by Wong Wing Kee. Judging from the spelling of the name, it should be a local player rather than "import" from China. I am sure there weren't many times that a local player from Hong Kong defeated Indonesia player in the past let alone having two players in the final. Just curious what has caused the sudden surge in their standards?

Yip Pui Yin, Wong Wing Ki and Chan Yan Kit are locals. The head coach of HKBA is Mr. Chan Chi Choy, whom I believe was one-time living in Indonesia as well. That's why a number of ex-Pelatnas players from Indonesia got the chance to play for HKG, such as: the now retired Agus Hariyanto, Albertus Susanto Njoto, and Yohan Wiratama Hadikusumo.

Yohan is currently on a rise, partnering Chau Hoi Wah in XD and is now ranked among the top 10 pairs in the World.

HKG team was split into halves. One half went west (for theThailand Open), and the other south (Australia and NZ Opens).

IMHO, this is a very sensible way of sending teammates out to play. Why send all teammates to go west or to go south, and for them ending up to compete against teammates in the same tournament(s)? ;););)

I must say that I too am impressed with their (HK player's) improvement; especially Wong Wing Ki. He played a very smart match against Andre Tedjono by taking away his biggest weapon, his smash. Hopefully Andre can bounce back and regain some of the form I know he's capable of.

Got to give credit to the HK crowd at the hall yesterday too though. They definitely carried the HK mix double pair against their young Indonesian opponents who looked very good after the first game but were completely outplayed in the next two.

Chau came over to acknowledge the crowd after the match which was very nice I thought.

Seems like what badmania implied is that the influx of Indonesia players have helped lifted up the standard of HK players. Interesting:rolleyes:

Both are correct. HK Badminton has never been stronger due to the influx of 'former' INA and CHN players.

As I suspected, Febe is no match to Sayaka. Maybe I am wrong as the match hasn't finished yet. I agree Febe is the No 3 rank player for Indonesia but I doubt even the first two singles of Indonesia can contest Sayaka.

Anisa has one very interesting smash block toward body.. she bend her leg just like going to sit down and return the smash instead of moving her hand.
One of the coach did mention this to us when we are on the side of the court watching her game..

India is still atleast 20 years away from becoming any potent force.
China is way above and deserve a separate listing in itself. Though, IMO, this is dangerous to the sport. I don't know if anybody apart from Chinese play table tennis any more . I respect the Chinese power and passion for the sport, but I love badminton even more. I won't like seeing badminton going the table-tennis way. The more the merrier.
