View Full Version : Ticket Pricing for WBC (August 10-16) in Hyderabad
baddylover28 08-02-2009, 05:10 AM hi,
what does the badminton fraternity/forum think about the following:
1. the ticket pricing for the forthcoming WBC. dont u think its' high price (Gold Class:INR 6,000/-, Silver Class:INR 4,000/-) considering the venue location, accessibility to the venue, commute to the venue. Most of my friends including me, badminton fraternity have expressed dismay over this exorbitant ticket pricing and decided to stay away from it. Be happy to watch it on TV (Total Sports Asia - TV Rights sold to them). Wonder which channel is that??? What do BAI or the organizers or deciding authorities think of, are they expecting audiences/spectators to buy the tickets??? I dont think so atleast from my point of view, I can't afford as my pocket doesnt' permit me to do so....especially with the global recession, its all the more hurting. Looks like the organizers have decided to keep the event a closed door affair, hence the exorbitant prices.

Is BAI planning to recover all that has been spent on hosting the c'ships?
2. views about certain international players pulling out from the championships...though I do not know most of the players who pulled out, as they are of insignificance in my view(please correct me if i'm wrong)
3. where do our indian men players stand in the championship?
4. is saina nehwal capable of pulling out a victory with the bout of health setbacks?? her fitness regimen and training is going to start tomorrow(monday 3 aug, 09). will she be able to regain fitness?? within a short(1 week) span of time for the c'ship?
please share ur views and opinions on the above.....
Cheers,
Sai
abedeng 08-02-2009, 07:17 PM I suppose that if you are talking from the Indian point of view, then yes, the prices are quite high. What was surprising to me was that there was no option to purchase daily or session-based tickets, all sales are based on seasonal or half-seasonal tickets. This is in contrast to the last World Championships in KL, where tickets are sold based on daily/session-based.
baddylover28 08-02-2009, 07:45 PM yes I did mention in INR (INdian Rupee), so it is from Indian Point of View. yes ur right there is no daily or session based ticket as of now. I think its like if you buy a season ticket then u r compelled to come and watch as u paid for the ticket, that way ensuring the audience is forced to come to watch the play.

- Is the INR 6000 (US$125) and INR 4000 (US$83) for the season pass or half-season pass?? If i recall, correctly if i'm wrong, the 2007 WC ticket price for the Finals Rd. alone was between US$20 to US $35 per person. And that's only for regular seating. If it's for the whole season pass, then IMO, it's a bit high but not really a killer. You could opt for the Silver deal, which IMO, is not too bad esp. for this caliber of baddy event.
- So far, we've only received news/infos on a few players withdrawing, no more than 5.
- For the IND men, they surely can spring a surprise here and there. In the MS, of course, you got Anup Shridnar. Then the other veteran players. In the MD, IMO, only 1 pair stands out. Of course, some pressure will be there as they are the hosts.
- Depends on her health. If she is fully, i mean 100%, recovered and doesn't show any further signs of her illness, then yes, she will give it a go. However, besides her fitness & loss of training time, IMO, her biggest challenge will be the pressure of performing in front of her homecrowd. I think if she does indeed participate, i wouldn't be surprised to see her reach the QF Rd. and that's when the fun really starts.

abedeng 08-03-2009, 07:19 PM Ticket pricing is also reflective of the stadium capacity (30% of Putra Stadium in WC07) and popularity of the sport. The pricing for WC09 is closer to the Super Series Finals in Kota Kinabalu (a stadium with equivalent capacity as Gachibowli Stadium), which was quite steep for a 4-day event.
For the Singapore Open Super Series 2009 in May, where most of the world's top class players were present, the Season early bird Prime tickets (closest to the courts for all the five days' events) cost only SING$50 (US$32). The season tickets for other categories were even much cheaper for students and senior citizens, priced at below SING$20. And daily tickets can be bought for all 5 days, with the finals costing the most at SIN$20 for adults, I think.
But the venue, the Singapore Indoor Stadium, has a capacity of well over 10,000 seats, closer to 15,000 seats. I think the attendance then must be around 8,000 during the peak days like the semifinals and finals despite the fact that no Singapore shuttlers were in contention. :D
The bulk of the cost is borne by the sponsors. Keeping the ticket prices low and affordable can only promote the game further. It is a real pity that now that badminton is becoming more popular in India, in part due to the exploits of Saina Nehwal, Chetan Anand, Anup Sridhar, Diju and Jwala Gutta, et all, the the BAI is not taking the opportunity to capitalize on this interest with free or lower-priced tickets.
The World Championships is no ordinary event and will only return to India after some years.
