..she wouldn't feel she's the oldest player out there. There are 2 other older players/gentlemen and WC regulars, Matt Fogarty and Dean Schoppe from the U.S.

The Unlikely Badminton Mixed Double Pairing
Posted on 12/08/2009, 09:20, by admin, under Uncategorized.
A mixed double pairing formed by mother and son? This is the 1st time I heard of such pairing, interesting……
HYDERABAD: Mom is the word at the Badminton World Championship this year for Misha Zilberman. And son is what Svetlana Zilberman will swear by when this Israeli duo begins its mixed doubles campaign in Hyderabad.
There have been instances of siblings and couples pairing in tournaments, but this unique mother
-son partnership will probably be a first on a world stage.
The Zilbermans, ranked 107 in the world, form the two-member Israeli squad.
Misha will also feature in the men’s singles. His first round opponent is two-time World Champion and Olympic gold medallist Lin Dan.
“It is a tough match,” said Misha, 19. In the mixed doubles first round, the Zilbermans meet 11th seeds Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg of England. “It’s a tough match,” said Svetlana, 45.
The expectations are realistic, but the duo is happy at making it to the Worlds. “We never expected to qualify.
But we got a chance and we are here. I’m happy to be in my first-ever World Championship but not happy with the draw,” said Misha. It’s also the first Worlds for Svetlana. She represented the erstwhile Soviet Union in Uber Cup.
But how did this pair come together and become fairly successful? “My mother was a good singles and doubles player during her career. As I came closer to the game, I lacked a good sparring partner.
This is when my mother stepped on to the court for the second time after retirement.
She has been of great help,” said Misha. Svetlana said she was forced to come out of retirement because of the dearth of good girls doubles players. From 2005 on, they have been playing together.
Misha said his mother scolded him when he made mistakes on the court. “On court, she is my coach and at home she is my mother, very caring.” Svetlana said she had a very good understanding with her son. “He is able to learn from mistakes and we jell very well on the court.
He does all the running from the back court,” she said.

Misha looks to learn tricks of success with mother's recipe
Mon, Aug 10 07:05 PM
Mothers yearn for an ideal partner for their sons. Svetlana Zilberman was also on the lookout for a suitable partner for her badminton-playing son, Misha, to play mixed doubles.
But the failure to find a right candidate forced her to come out of retirement in 2005. Four year later, Svetlana (45) and Misha (20) have become the first mother-son pair to qualify for the BWF World Championship that begins here on Monday.
Svetlana, a European Championship bronze medallist for the erstwhile USSR, and Misha will be representing Israel in the flagship event and will take on England's 11th seeded Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg in the first round. "You won't believe but this also my first World Championship in an individual event," said Svetlana, who represented the USSR in Sudirman Cup and Uber Cup.
Svetlana, then Svetlana Beliasova, retired from international badminton in 1991 and moved to Israel after marriage. But she kept in touch by playing in the national championship.
Under her tutelage, Misha has dominated the junior national circuit but needed a partner to play mixed doubles and get more court time on the international senior circuit. "First, it is difficult to find girls who play badminton in Israel.
Then to find someone who was good to partner him was tougher. So I decided to step in," said Svetlana, who also doubles up as Misha's coach.
Initially, the 107th-ranked pair rarely made a mark but the combination surprised when they bagged a rubber against The Netherlands in the European team championship earlier this year. "No one expected us to win.
But that victory did a lot of good to my confidence," said Misha, who wants to make a career in singles.

Mother and son keep going against all odds
Mon, Aug 10 03:56 PM
Hyderabad, Aug 10 (IANS) Mixed doubles draw at the World Badminton Championships here has a highly unlikely entry of a mother-son pair from Israel, Svetlana and Misha Zilberman and they are a big hit here.
Age shows no bearing on the 45-year-old, ever-smiling Svetlana as she keeps pace with her 19-year-old son Misha on the court. Hardly can one notice any perceptible age difference as they practice at the Pullela Gopichand Academy here, though it is palpably clear who calls the shots. Naturally Svetlana, after all she is also Misha's coach.
Misha, unfortunately for him, runs into reigning world champion Lin Dan of China in the first round.
They mother and son have combined remarkably well for the last five years at the national and international events.
'My son was looking for a partner to play in mixed doubles. And since I was his coach, we started playing together. We have fared pretty well and made the cut for the World Championship for the first time,' says a beaming Svetlana.
'We are the current national champions and won it for five consecutive years, she adds for good measure.'
And the mother works hard to match her son's fitness.
'I work hard on my fitness. I have to be in good physical condition. Then only I can play with my son.
'But it's not easy to play with your own son. There are times when I get angry, but I remind myself that I am his partner on the court, not a mother.'
For someone, who has been playing since she was 12 and has won nearly 50 national titles, age has not slowed down Svetlana. In fact, she has kept herself going against the odds.
'Badminton is not a popular sport in our country. We have only 3-4 clubs where we can practice once or twice a week. Also we do not have any sponsor, and have to shell out from our pockets for everything, even for our travel,' she says.
Svetlana is now determined to see Misha develop into a world-class player. And as for Misha, he is excited at the prospect of playing with his mother at the Worlds here.
'It's exciting for both of us. In a way it's easy because we understand each other very well, but on the court it's purely a professional relationship,' he says.
Asked whether he gets chided by his mother while playing, Misha says: 'No. In fact, I sometimes point our mistakes, and she readily agrees.'
So, how long is he planning to play with his mother? 'Till I find somebody younger and that's not easy in Israel as not many play the game.'
Misha is the only Israeli to be making an effort to play in every international event. He is among the 50 professionals out of some 700 badminton players playing badminton in the country.
Svetlana and Misha were to play 11th-seeded British pair Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg, but await their new opponents after England's pull out from the Championships Sunday.

How are you guys getting the pics? Are they allowing the cameras to be carried inside? Its mentioned on the ticket that "no flash photography permitted". Does that mean that I can click a pic without keeping the flash on? ;) I'll be in the stadium for the Semi and the finals.

I don't know abt the regulations but you can try bringing in your digicam.
Flash photography is definitely a NO-NO. Your digicam should have a setting for taking pics w/out a flash. Good luck!!

Avataar and I are, ahem, expected to win the BC World Championship 2009 badminton title by walkover, without even lifting the racquet. Based on BC tournament rules, other BC forummers didn't show up and this allows us to claim the title "in absentia", wakakaka. All we need to do is take pics at the rostrum.
So in the end, Malaysia and India won't return home without a "title".
Raphy, however, needs to drive out all that pent up energy and swing racquets with some fellow journalists tonite.

In the midst of, err, mosquito infestation while awaiting the airport shuttle, avataar and I discussed on the future of Indian badminton and new talents in the making.
From what I gather, the major issue here is seriousness to commit to long term planning, and scouting of talents from all over the country. One way is to have more domestic or lower grade international tournaments.
Players shortlisted for centralized training too must be willing to take the plunge all the way, and not just quit midway.
We also talked about Badzine India and the logistical requirements to keep the contents fresh and updated from all over India. Quite a big challenge because it isn't cheap for reporters to move about finding stories.

India is a cricket-mad country where every other sport takes a back seat. Even in sports journalism, this is reflected in journalists who specialize in only reporting cricket and those who report everything else.
However, as seen from the appreciative crowd in the last two days of the competition, the local crowd can appreciate the hard and tight battles. This is especially so in the MD final. I dare say most of the BWF/BAI guests attending the event aren't natural badminton followers, but they can be converted to fans of this beautiful game.

A victory that, I might add, may not have happened without the world championship winning "C'mon DENMARK!!!!" shouts of another BC member, pjswift. :D She was instrumental in carrying Lay and Juhl in the victories over Zheng Bo/Ma Jin and Lee Yong Dae/Lee Hyo Jung.

That's nothing, I could have bragged a lot more than that .......... I am the first Malaysian BC World Champion, remember. Where else are you willing to navigate on challenging roads on suicidal transports, just to "win a World title?":p:D

Talking about my, ahem, challenging path towards BC World Championship victory, I'll just let these pics do the talking ....... :p
1. The road leading to my "training base"
2. Where I walked past this cemetery, in the middle of the main road
3. All the way to this traffic police-manned junction
4 and 5. Over the obstacles and "water hazards"
6. Eventually to reach the battle area and the grand prize

Alternatively, the suicidal auto-rickshaws are a good complement to walking.
Here are some views of the challenges while navigating thru them:-

Donna Kellogg complained about no security in Gachibowli, obviously she hasn't seen this:-
1. Approaching road block at Gachibowli
2, 3 and 4. Manned "bunkers" within the Stadium Complex
5. Guards on the gate, this particular one remain closed until 90 minutes before the competition starts

I think it's good that there is so much security.
Maybe it's not good for the mood and it might be scary, but imagine what could happen when there really is an attack or something...

Err, the Hotels had quite cheap buffets, you see, the kind you don't see in US or Singapore or Malaysia or China ...... it felt cruel, not taking advantage of them, wakakakaka.:p Thus a few lbs could only be lost during fasting month.
I stayed at a typical cheapskate Apartment initially. :p I don't normally travel extravagantly unless with family.
Only on my last day, I got to sleep at the Ista Hotel (courtesy of pjswift and Jen, TQ TQ):D. But the place is too far from the grocery stores, hence the importance of, you guessed it, cheap buffets ...... :p:D:p

- Wow, that's quite a distance from your apt. Was that pic taken near the stadium or half-way to the stadium? Did you actually try to walk to & from the apt?..:p
- How far away is the Ista Hotel to the stadium?
- Yeah, lucky. They went back to S'pore and left the room for you, eh??..;)

Chris, why can't you believe my extreme "walking prowess"? All those years of "bouncer and load bearer training" really pays off, I tell you, could even do this during the fasting month ...... :D
Ista to stadium is around 4 kms, same distance as my Apartment to stadium but the roads are the best in HITEC City. That's because of the main IT Hub nearby with Microsoft, CA Unicenter, Nvidia nearby.
Nope, no such thing as luck. Luck doesn't move people to World Championships, and PJ and Jen ran through "many obstacles" before they got here. Just that they were unable to secure a flight on the 17th because of the players returning home, that's why they got home early.

Which hotel, Ista or my apartment?
Ista is one of the newest 5-star hotels, equivalent to Novotel at HITEC City.
My Apartment is equivalent to 3-stars accommodation, with free breakfast (cheap but good) and 70+ channels of satellite LCD TV. The channels are superior than even ISTA (around 30+ channels), but the area is prone to routine load shedding. Electrical power is always off around 10:30 am, only to resume around 1 hour later.

- 4 Kms is not too bad, but it's still quite a walk...
- I meant their loss and your gain, lucky for you. Hmm, if Jen & pjswift had booked an earlier flight, why did they reserve the room til the 17th, assuming they were planning to stay til the 17th??..Or did you actually reserve a room for the last night??..
- The apt choice is not too bad considering they give free breakfast; plus it's the same distance from the Ista to the stadium. As long as it's safe and you're able to get some sleep.

4 kms is hardly considered a walk, took me only 38 minutes with notebook bag in tow, while taking some pics on camera phone. Now, a real walk is like Likas Indoor Stadium to Kota Kinabalu City after the Super Series Finals, a distance of 8-9 kms.
PJ and Jen tried to change their flight to the 17th. Problem with the return flight is that it departs at 12:05 am, so it was confusing when they initially booked their return trip online on the 16th. But they were out of seats because 17th flight is full (a number of players are returning home via Singapore).
Anyway, they gave me a treat at Ista by paying my board for 1 nite. Which is great (TQ again to PJ and Jen...... :D) All I need is to pay for food and minibar and stuff. Thus Badzine India (avataar and davey) and I shared that room and had quite a lengthy discussion. Some of the World Championship articles you read on Badzine, were written in the cool comforts of the room. :p:D
The apartment is safe, but as I said, daily electrical load shedding isn't convenient.:mad: All apartments had Gen Sets on standby but not all of them kick in during the electrical shutdown.
But it is a more pleasant walk from the apartment to stadium via the back roads (that is, as long as you can see what you are stepping on):p. At Ista the main road is kind of bare without any interesting sights, and you might as well take advantage of the shuttle service (with military escort). Besides, I can brag that I rode escort to a World Champion pair, Juhl/Laybourn. :D

I walked at nite during my first day, and also at my last visit during India Open. But the area isn't well lit so you need to be careful on what you are stepping on. A lot of "business" happens on Indian roads, remember ......:p
The rest of the days, I had company of avataar and sometimes davey.
Cancelling the room is possible without penalty, that shouldn't be a problem at the official hotel. Besides, the Ista had good business catering to Jen and pjswift's need. If they wanted to cancel and the hotel had rejected it, I would have been ready to do, ahem, serious bouncing duties against the hotel management. :p
But they didn't cancel, so let's just state the obvious, that Jen and pjswift are truly nice folks (which is more than 100% true). :D
