RedShuttle 08-10-2009, 06:24 PM The most significant event today may be CHN's decision to stay or to go. That decision is due today.

yes, agree. Even yesterday night I try to get some news from the players, they said they don't know yet, have to wait for the announcement by tomorrow(this) morning. If they change their mind to leave, this WC will be meaningless. :(

Meaningless for CHN fans, but not for others for sure :)
Well, in that case it does represent a good chance for Lee Chong Wei or Sony Dwi Kuncoro or Peter Gade or Park Sung Hwan to win their first World Championships title though :)
Most importantly for INA WD, it will also be a "great blessing" if CHN indeed withdraws as it does mean that both Nitya/Grace and Mel/Shendy will be spared an early exit.
We shall see.....

but without chinese players like Lin Dan, sure there is less excitement for this WC. People always want to see other non-chinese players to break through China's wall, if they really decided to leave, then we could not watch a perfect WC for this year as China and England have pulled out. Another news is that Denmark and Netherland might pull out also depending on how serious the problem is in Hyderabad. But yesterday one of the chinese players told me, the terrorist attack is aiming against three countries (China, USA, and England). But I don't know how true it is.
yourbestfriend 08-10-2009, 08:26 PM But yesterday one of the chinese players told me, the terrorist attack is aiming against three countries (China, USA, and England). But I don't know how true it is.
if that is even 1% true, if i were china or usa then i'd be on the first plane back home.
it would be a total disaster for not only the sport of badminton but the indian sports association as well if china were to pull out.
aZn_Popcorn 08-10-2009, 08:30 PM I would assume if their was a terrorist attack, they would be aiming for USA, England, and Canada. I don't see China in their radar. France could as well be in there.
yan_brot 08-10-2009, 09:02 PM if i were the china official, i would decide not to continue this WC under the unsecure situation. it will also can effect the athlete's concentration...
better go home early than being killed by a bomb
just let the othar country grab the title, like malaysia, a big badminton country but very long time drought the WC title.

yaya. Even WYH's mother is worried about her daughter also, she rather want the team to leave Hyderabad. As WC is held once a year, come back next year in Paris.
PoLLuX 08-10-2009, 09:22 PM several interesting matches
Howard Bach/Tony Gunawan [USA] Vs [MAS] Tan Fook Choong/Wan Wah Lee [12]
The MAS uncles versus form3r world champion, but hope Tony/Bach show their WC level again!!
Kenichi Tago [JPN] Vs [DEN] Joachim Persson [7]
expect another upset, but in his facebook, JP mention that he well prepared for this WC, but I bet Tago could win in tight rubber game
vpsingh 08-10-2009, 11:19 PM It will be most unfortunate if China pulls out:crying:, but it is their decision. It is rarely you see high level badminton tournaments in India.
I can't see what more can Indian security agencies do unless the players and their staff want to stay inside an army barrack now. You can't make anybody feel secure, if fear has already taken over somebody's mind.
Never mind, keeping this aside, apart from the Indian players, I have decided to cheer for the Israeli pair of Misha-Svetlana (go Misha!!!:)) and as usual any Indonesian player (provided they are not competing against Indians:D)
PIGGYGANONE 08-10-2009, 11:42 PM ASTRO is showing a repeat of day 1 mathces.(COURT 3) from 11.30PM-3.30pm.
DAY 2 mathes AUG11 from 3.30pm-11.30pm
PIGGYGANONE 08-11-2009, 12:02 AM CHINA TEAM may withdraw????
Instead of withdrawing the entire team why not leave behind those players who wanted to stay and compete or send some second team player to replace the current STARS.
Maybe allow one player/pair for each discipline.
With CHINA depth in talent, they can easily relace WORLD CLASS players if any unfortunate incident occur.
Further more the presence of a few CHINESE player can still induce excitement.
etudiant 08-11-2009, 12:25 AM When will the official statement from Chn's official be ruled out.....before or after today's matches....??
vpsingh 08-11-2009, 12:46 AM This tournament seems jinxed for reason unknown.

PIGGYGANONE 08-11-2009, 12:52 AM To minimise and dispell more fear about the impending TERRORIST ATTACK,
the officials may have to organise free admission to students to build a scenario of trouble free with adequate security.
The officials than can cite this situation that even local parents have no fear to allow
their children to be presnt at the tournament.
Chibot 08-11-2009, 12:56 AM Hope all the best for all Indonesian players today.
Jimmy_Goh 08-11-2009, 01:12 AM Its quite meaningless for a World Championship to be without its top players. If China does decide to pullout for safety reason, there will be a hollow winning feeling for the eventual winner, and gossips of "what if . . . " will always be tagged to this year's Champion.

If security were a concern, CHN should have packed up like ENG without even playing a match.
If they leave now, LYB knows it's because he can't see CHN doing well.
It would be conceding defeat in the most cowardly manner as only LYB knows how.

Before the matches get started, the problems are not so serious. So, LYB told the media, they were to stay in Hyderabad, this of course please all the chinese supporters. However, LYB was informed by the CBA on yesterday that the problems are getting more serious and they might have to leave Hyderabad. Whether China can do well or not, let's wait and see. Anything can happen before the final day. :)

it's cowardly to leave a tournament one day in because you fear for the safety of your players? i can't even believe you said that.
you obviously hate lyb and it totally shows. at the end of the day, it's just a game. nobodies life is worth a world championship gold medal.
you really need to do some serious thinking man

Yup2, I think even the number of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia outnumber those in Malaysia ;)
At least there are 3-4% of Indonesian people who are ethnic Chinese (let's say 3.5% of 240 mio Indonesians = around 8.5 mio, and most of them are Hokkien, Hakka, and Teochew I think), while 25% of ethnic Chinese in Malaysia (25% of 25 mio Malaysians = 6.25 mio).
I have so many friends whose surname is Tan :)
PIGGYGANONE 08-11-2009, 02:05 AM TAN can be a HAINANESE too,
besides HOKKIEN AND TEOCHEW.
Thats why the surname TAN or CHEN in CHINESE character has the largest population.

Actually Chinese Indonesians are about over 10 millions..( roughly 5%) more than MAS and Singapore....;)

Another popular surname is LIN(CHINA AND TAIWAN), LIM(HOKKIEN<TEOCHEW,HAINANESE,HENG HWAect) and LAM(CANTONESE)
CHINESE character is the same.
If i am mistaken there are also JAPANESE LIM.(HAYASHI) which is onr of the most poular JAPANES FAMILY NAME)
So LIN DAN must have lots of Family clan fans in MAL,INA, TPE and JAPAN
K14N2 08-11-2009, 02:20 AM Actually Chinese Indonesians are about over 10 millions..( roughly 5%) more than MAS and Singapore....;)
Yeah, I agree with you :)... But our BPS census never mention that ethnic Chinese is one of the largest ethnicities in Indonesia. 5% of 240 mio is about 12 million people, and that will make Chinese as the 3rd largest ethnic groups in Indonesia after Javanese (42%) and Sundanese (15%) ;)
OK OK, back to the world championship topic, hehe :D

..my gut feeling tells me CHN squad will stay and fight on!!..
If CHN squad leaves, after completing 1 day of action, then this yr's WC is definitely going to go down as one of, if not, the most dubious World Championships in BWF history...
yaya. Even WYH's mother is worried about her daughter also, she rather want the team to leave Hyderabad. As WC is held once a year, come back next year in Paris.
..the thing is, what if the same terrorist threat happens next yr in Paris?? or the following yr in London?? Will the same exact scenario, of team(s) leaving, happen again??..

...
...concur. I even mentioned in one of the threads that perhaps those players (who feel insecure abt their safety) should just pack up their belongings from the hotel and move and stay in the stadium. With that many security personnel, the stadium is perhaps the safest venue in Hyderabad..:(
badMania 08-11-2009, 02:27 AM oic, lol. I thought "Tan" is only used by MAS hokkien :o:D Now I know it :D

Actually Chinese Indonesians are about over 10 millions..( roughly 5%) more than MAS and Singapore....;)
True, but sadly I think only the older Chinese and a relatively small percentage of the younger generation can speak their dialect or mother tongue (like Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka, Hainanese, etc) although I believe Mandarin should be more common among them now. Not sure whether the learning of Chinese or Mandarin is now allowed in the government schools, though.

What I read about the swine flu is that one can easily catch it. It is in the air that's why flu patients are told to wear a mask so that when they cough or sneeze, the germs will be contained hopefully and not fly about wild.
The flu can easily attack someone who is not strong or unwell especially in crowded places. So anyone. even Misbun, can be a victim.

Extreme security arrangements taking its toll actually.
While players are being offered so much security, fans have to bear its pain.
Frisking, displaying each and every object in your pockets/bags etc. will mean queueing in sun for hours. Tickets are also quite costly (by Indian standards, I meant) and nobody in stadium tells you where do they sell them.

PIGGYGANONE 08-11-2009, 03:54 AM The Indian press are not trustworthy.
Why should they play up the flu issue.
Such news with wrong identity should never be published, at this highly sensitive moment.
INDIAN security should warn the INDIAN press to be more careful
MISBUN SIDEK's name is definitely more popular than JEREMY GAN.
Perhaps MISBUN should request INDIAN PRESS for compensation to his family
I suspect INDIAN PRESS is playing this issue with a plan to increase press circulation.
qczhao 08-11-2009, 03:55 AM JP on court now.
shouldnt be too hard for him this round. but whenever i think of him now i can't help but remember the thrashing LD gave him at the All England.

Misbun should certainly demand comensation.

On the contrary, I think JP will struggle against Tago. His recent form hasn't been anything to write home about
madbad 08-11-2009, 03:58 AM What's happening with Tony/Howard. Getting hammered in kind now. Perhaps the drift is a factor?

avataar 08-11-2009, 04:12 AM right throughout there has been more side news than news on court, though one must confess none of the action witnessed so far has warranted news to transfer to the action on court.

qczhao 08-11-2009, 04:16 AM JP takes first game 21-16.
PIGGYGANONE 08-11-2009, 04:17 AM NEVER underestimate BP capability. Perhaps he knows his superiority.
So he can leisurely chase from behind. BP tried this trick to impress his home crowd supporters with this strtegy. But somehow it backfired.
BP will be paying a high price with the same strategy that he employ in Thailand, if he loses this time again and his plan backfired again.

PIGGYGANONE 08-11-2009, 04:42 AM This MD result of victory for USA, may change the badminton.
On the optimistic point of view, The US public may be more keen to watch badminton
tournament.
I understand the wealthiest man in the world BILL GATES is a also a ardent badmiston fan.
Unfortunately there isnt US badminton player or pair to cheer for.
Just imagine what will be the PRIZE money for badminton tournament if MICROSOFT start to sponsor.
The increase prize money will definitely garner more interest among the WESTERN
global player.
In short Badminton may gradually follow the footstep of Soccer, as US has slowly showed signs as a SOCCER power nation.
vpsingh 08-11-2009, 04:42 AM Patipat Chalardchaleam/Nuttaphon Narkthong from Thailand have withdrawn it seems.

Make that 11-5 at the interval. Perhaps the heat has sapped JP of his energy, which, on the other hand, I think the youthful KT has in abundance

Its working here Jason..... tell me which one u wanna know
twobeer 08-11-2009, 05:37 AM Kenichi Tago eliminated Joachim Persson 21-13 in the rubber. I think a matter of a younger Asian player outlasting an European player in the heat.
Personally I think Tago simply is a better player than JP :-(
