Beryno to take it easy

Kota Kinabalu: Shuttler Beryno Wong is taking a cautious approach and will not risk injury by over exerting himself at the Russia Open Grand Prix where he will be competing starting today (Thursday) in Vladivostok.

With the expected freezing temperature in the country, his coach Alan Tan hoped Beryno will take it easy in his first European competition of the year.

Alan told Express Sports after a training session on Tuesday that the former national back up player is still not fully fit after recovering from a nasty knee injury which has sidelined him for over a year.

"There is no more pain on his injured knee but because of the long lay-off it is still weak and affecting his speed on court," Tan said.

Although Beryno has competed in seven tournaments since his return from injury in June, Tan said his overall strokes still need more polishing up as he was away from training for far too long.

"As he was out of action for almost a year his strokes are still rusty but I believe he is slowly but surely on the right track to recapturing his old form judging by the performances he displayed since his return to the international scene in June."

Beryno started his come back at the June Malaysia Open GP Gold in Johor Bahru. He didn't make it to the main draw but since then he has played in the main draw of five more international competitions and even managed to win the Laos Open singles title in July.

Tan also disclosed that AST badminton club decided to send Beryno to compete in as many tournaments as possible in order to help him break into the top 100 ranking list by the end of the year.

"If he can make it, he stands a very good chance to compete in bigger prize money tournaments in the future and we are hoping he will achieve the target so that we can plan for his schedule next year", added Tan.

The 23-year-old left for Russia via Korea on Tuesday night. Due to limited budget he is alone on the trip and he is expected to come back next Tuesday.
