A second earthquake has hit Sumatra, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale. This follows a massive 7.6 quake 24 hours earlier.

Are any of our BC members affected? Updates please. I read the death toll is expected to be upwards of 1,000.

A horribly tragic week following the Typhoons in Philippines and Vietnam, and the Tsunami in American Samoa.

Wishing all affected health and safety.

..approaching the same no. of casualties as the one in 2005 (1,300 casualties).
I think a lot of the casualties and damages are because the type of construction/structures used in that region toppled (mostly used concrete, brick, mortar, stone instead of a more earthquake-resistant type of construction). But then, they can't really use wood construction (as used in a lot of construction in N. America) as it's humid in that whole region. So, they have to either use concrete (or similar materials) or steel..

Anyway, hope no BCers are affected in that region and the casualties will be minimal.

Can I just pass on my sympathies to any BC members, or their family/friends, caught up in the terrible quake and typhoon hitting the Asia-Pacific region.

I hope for your safety, and for all in your region.

From Badminton fans in the UK and Poland.
