View Full Version : Stringer Database: It's been long overdue...
DinkAlot 10-16-2009, 08:57 PM ...Panda is putting together a database of approved stringers, worldwide. This way, you can find a local stringer that you can trust.
I will put the name, location, contact information on an excel spreadsheet, save it and continually update it as I get additional info.
Definition of an approved stringer: is a person who can consistently string badminton rackets safely, accurately, without damaging rackets. This does not necessarily mean an approved stringer is an elite or best stringer. It simply means the stringer can do a good, safe string job.
To be an approved stringer is not difficult, you have to score 80/100 points which is very easy for an experienced stringer. An experienced stringer should actually score 90/100 easily and if they take the time, 95/100 with no problem.
There are a few ways to be an approved stringer:
1) Easiest way is by referral. Below is a list of stringers that I know, have seen, personally string and/or have personal experience with their stringing. If any of these people recommend others, I will put them on the list as I know they know. In turn, if the people recommended know others, I will also add them to the list:
USA
Sean Chang, Irvine, CA USA
John Chen, San Diego, CA
Dan Chien, Orange County, CA
Halim Haryanto Ho, OCBC, Orange, CA
Alex Liang, SGVBC, El Monte, CA
Eric Lin, SGVBC, El Monte, CA
Andy Tran, SGVBC, El Monte, CA
Don Van, Orange County, CA USA
Tommy Wang, Los Angeles, CA USA
Steven Wu, Chicago, IL USA
Elliot Woo, San Francisco, CA USA
Canada
Pete Lai, Vancouver, British Columbia
Netherlands
Jerry Nantenstedt
United Kingdom
Mark Appleton
2) The hard way to qualify is to send me a racket strung at 28lbs. and I will inspect it. Also, I will ask you a set of badminton stringing specific questions and you should be able to answer all of them relatively easily. Once approved, I add you to the list.
My goal is to have hundreds, if not thousands of approved, good stringers worldwide so badminton players can find a good stringer and not have to worry about their string job.
I hope this helps. :D
Best regards and God bless,

...
..wow, i can't believe it. The only stringer, from the list, i've tried so far is Dan.
I think i need to try and ask the other (local) stringers on the list to do my stringing job next time.
Dan, how about the reg. Yonex tournament stringer from NorCal? i forgot his name, the Japanese fella..Kakinami??..
Also, how about Wayne Lau from Wayne Racket Sport (he strung my rackets a couple of times).
are you an eurasian, dan?:)
..our Panda is an Amer-asian panda..:)

singnflip4life 11-15-2009, 10:47 PM Sir Dink, is that really your name? I have a hard time believing that your grandparents named you "German female unicorn," not to insult your name or anything.
plus, I thought my name took a while to write, but yours owns mine in terms of strokes.
too bad i don't have a spare racket to send you strung at 28lbs. I use an M140 and there is still the slightest bit of warping when I strung my friend's Tantrum 200 at 27 pounds with MicroLegend
DinkAlot 11-15-2009, 11:37 PM Sir Dink, is that really your name? I have a hard time believing that your grandparents named you "German female unicorn," not to insult your name or anything.
Sir, are you, for lack of a better term, that uninformed? What did you use? Google's Translator? :p If you are unsure, do not speculate, you just look silly. :o...:D:D:D
That is my Chinese name which is pronounced, "qián (http://www.mandarintools.com/sounds/qian2.aif) dé (http://www.mandarintools.com/sounds/de2.aif) lin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qilin)" in pinyin and the closest American pronunciation is "Chien Duh Ling". The direct translation is "Money", "Virtue", "Kirin".
錢 = My Last Name/Family Name
德麟= My Surname
Back on topic, I'm withdrawing from doing the Stinger Database because of lack of interest.
singnflip4life 11-16-2009, 12:11 AM Maybe uninformed.
I live with a canto friend, and i asked her and she doesn't know what the last one was. I recognize your family name, and i recognized the first part of your surname, de, from de guo (germany), and then I went to yellow bridge (as recommended by my chinese teacher when I come across a character I don't know) and lin came up as "female unicorn."
I apologize for my transgression in insulting your family and your name.
My chinese name is zhan1 jian4 feng1
詹健豐

Thanks for the props!!!
kakinami 11-17-2009, 12:22 PM I forgot too in the Cupertino/ Sunnyvale area Monica Ku from Racket Supply is an Excelent stringer, she usually strings at the Davis, and Berkeley tournaments
Vtec101 11-17-2009, 01:02 PM I'd vouch for Alan Kakinami any day. He's one of the best and most consistent stringer I've used so far. Along with Sir Dinky of course.
illusionistpro 11-17-2009, 01:29 PM Ill also give a +1 to both monica and alan. They're both good people and great stringers, I always try to stop by to say hi when I see them :D i think alan is currently stringing on whatever the newest machine yonex has out es5pro and monica uses the victor equivalent, both machines are great and both stringers are qualified in my opinion.
cooler 11-17-2009, 01:51 PM hope yonex and some USRSA members were able to read some of the deleted posts of alan, a true display of his professionalism as a 'pro' stringer, NOT.

Oooo that's where they went. I thought this thread was missing a few posts.
So should I start making that excel file?

So should I start making that excel file?yes, you should. MS word would be better tho.
singnflip4life 11-17-2009, 02:12 PM Okie dokes I'll get on that tonight after classes.
kakinami 11-17-2009, 02:28 PM Kevin Yamaguchi from Asby Sports in San Jose, Mike Walker from San Diego Badminton Supply, Sattawat Pongnirat from OCBC are also good stringers Approved by Alan. I would trust these guys with stringing rackets. I thought this thread was to help find good stringers and not hate on them.

are they USRSA certified?
who's hating stringers? i was just checking the cubic inches under the hood but found the mods were just some headers and low restriction muffler.

Dear Master Cooler,
I would say you give USRSA certification a little more credential than it should. Even I was certified 4 yrs ago but stop paying dues for 2 years now, I find the instructions/lectures/seminars too heavy on Tennis (some racquet ball and only one in badminton). Majority (I feel 90%) of USRSA members never strung a badminton racquet in their life.
Sorry for disagreeing on this one. If you are making fun of the USRSA, I think I missed it. I actually will find making fun of them is more appropriate.

at the request of the OP. this thread is now locked and will be removed in the future.
i think while it is a good idea to have a database of "good" stringers, it appears that with current wisdom, stringing quality is non-scientific (at least not rigorously so) and subjective, it will (and has) generate a bit of contention to define the list.
if you disagree with my statement above, please contribute to this thread:
