.
We can see that both our World Singles No.1's, Wang Yihan and Lee Chong Wei, are getting tired towards the end of this year, 2009. However, many fans are still hoping for them to be able to participate in the 2009 Super Series Masters Finals.
Question: Will our World Singles No.1's be participating in the 2009 SS Masters Finals?:confused::confused:

:D:D:D Fans of WYH and LCW will definitely hope for them to participate.
IMHO, LCW would be there (just because it's held in Malaysia).
And, for WYH, many think she would skip this one.

LD should grab this title since it's one of the few titles he hasn't got. This should be on your check list LD!

From BWF site, it stated that LD will not play here.
*sigh relief* from other 7 competitors from MS. And I do not think he need to prove himself anymore. He already winning all the major title that is.
Super series Final where one country only allow to have two players to play in my opinion just not a major event in my book.
Example: In WS: cause China had 4 WS, Firdasari and Salakjit will replace two of them.
They are in because they play tons of SS events. Firda play 11 SS and Salakjit 9 SS. None of them had reachat least one SS semi final. Both had only reach QF three times. The rest are mostly lost in first or second round.
At least this year Firda beat Tine once in SS event. But Salakjit?
hcpoirot
11-22-2009, 05:46 PM
And what an absurd this SS Final event .
One country can only had 2 players in each category. But a player can collect a total of 12 SS events for the final SS rankings.
Example: Pi Hong Yan are number 2 in WS super series ranking cause she had total points from 12 SS events.
But the REAL world ranking only based on maximal of your best from ten events. Maybe it will be better if SS rankings also based on your best TEN SS events points.
Thats why we will have some not very best players/ pairs in some of the categories.

If the prize money become 5 million, its become more important that ONLY the best qualified to top 8 in each category. So we can see some amazing badminton.
With the 2 players pre country rules, we bound to get few consistent players but not as good as others in the mix and they will be white washed by top players like when LD play Jan Jorgensen.
But at least the depth in Men Doubles , we will see all top matches and not some one side matches like probably in MS, WS, and WD. (If lots of players decided not to play here)
Suprisingly, XD are very competitive now.

..the idea is how to spur more interest to this invitation tournament so the top 8 players/pairs (not replacement players/pairs) will attend, if that is the goal of BWF. But looks like they haven't done so. Why is that? Other than being injured, why the lack of commitment from the top 8 players/pairs to participate?
If it's schedule, they could do something with the schedule but where would they fit this event? Should they make it once every 2 yrs or 3 yrs?....or should they increase the prize money?..

Currently, it is not how Badminton players can be spurred by BWF. Most players (other than independent players) are still under the instructions from their National Associations.
This is one of the main differences between Badminton players compared to players of other sports.

Is the Badminton Super Series Masters Finals bringing recognition to individual players or to their National Associations?

Perhaps after this year, there won't be anymore Super Series Masters Finals (my bet). :(:(:(

Hope that this Super Series Masters Finals event will not be held in Malaysia all the time.
Perhaps, BWF and Yonex can get the Japan Badminton Association to stage it in Japan next year (in 2010).

You're right, it's totally ridiculous... And yeah... embarrassing... It's like the Masters Finals are an afterthought. Considering the prize money I thought it was supposed to be somewhat of a major event. Well I'm certainly not convinced! Seems unnecessary if this is the effort they're going to put into it. Would probably be better off just not having it at all...

We hope that our BCer in JB, nokh88, could give us more info (from what can be seen happening at that venue, supposedly to be staging this event).

...i think BWF should rename the tourney to simply "Super Series Year End Get Together Invitation Finals". They can get rid off the word "Masters" cos we ain't gonna see the real top 8 players/pairs in the world competing, again...Last yr they failed to showcase the top 8 players/pairs; this yr, same old story..:(:o

Where is the JB? Stadium name? same w Msia GP 2009...Bandaraya Stadium? Which hotel...to book if i come from KL?
Should be. There's only one indoor stadium in JB and all previous ABC tournaments were staged there. There are a few hotels nearby, namely New York, Grand Paragon, Crystal Crown which is @ RM100 plus per night. Players and officials have stayed here before. Thistle, Mutiara and Zon are also nearby but slightly dearer.

.
From past events, they have a big shuttlecock at the entrance and some wall posters on the stadium and that's about it. I will be in the vicinity later and will take a look from outside which I think won't be much 'cos the decorations only take a day to put and it's still too early. Will keep you posted if I see anything later. Tickets for ABC tourney used to be RM10.00 for first few days and RM20.00 for QF and RM30.00 for SF & Finals. No idea about this SS Masters Final though.

At least this will give Msian players more opportunity to win. Weather they will grab the opportunity and play their hearts out.. it is another matter.

Just another thought...
Hope that this Super Series Masters Finals event will not be held in Malaysia all the time.
Perhaps, BWF and Yonex can get the Japan Badminton Association to stage it in Japan next year (in 2010).

yup, agree with you. I don't understand why every time SS Final is held in Malaysia. :( I hope other nations get a chance to organize this SS Final, such as Korea, Japan, Denmark or England? :D

So unfortunate that CL is not ranked any higher in the SS Ranking. With LD and CJ skipping the SS Masters Finals, it's only BCL who can come (from CBA) for the MS event.

Basically, NO nation willing to host the game...
So MAS as the BWF office, must take it (shld say, forced to take it)... :)
(I got this info during WJC, chit-chat with 1 of the BAM guy after his phone call asking some1 to get prepared for SS masters final, decided in MAS) haha!

Somehow it's swapping... coz CBA thinks that EA games hold higher importance, mainly due to 4 years once, and held at CHI (maybe suetyan can describe further if it's true) :)

..prestige or prize money being awarded?..
I just feel a lot of the national bodies/players don't really care about this event. After all, it is an invitation only event without any major repercussions should a player decide not to attend (no ranking pts awarded). Its only enticement & reward is the bigger prize money.
Now, imagine this scenario. What if the SSMF is held in China? Will CBA allow all of their qualified players to participate?..

I don't find the meaning to held this SS Final. To win the big money? Or to increase the burden of the players? As you know many qualified players have played many tournaments in a year in order to qualify for this SS Final. Won't they get exhausted?

... SS Final is simply waste money, waste time, waste players' physical strength.
..and also a waste of space in this forum??..
I don't find the meaning to held this SS Final. To win the big money? Or to increase the burden of the players? As you know many qualified players have played many tournaments in a year in order to qualify for this SS Final. Won't they get exhausted?
Well, from what i understand, according to BWF, the sole purpose of holding this SSMF is to expose the sport of badminton through its top 8 players/pairs while at the same time reward those players/pairs with a, let's call it, yr end bonus prize money.
And I quip from BWF website:
"The BWF introduced the Super Series format to showcase badminton at a higher level of competitiveness, to increase television coverage for the sport and to increase the star quality and popularity of the top players in the world through a wider television audience.
The BWF Super Series Masters Finals ends the series for the year and the best eight men’s and women’s singles and doubles players, as well as mixed doubles players are invited to battle it out for top prize money."
Unfortunately, the way i see it, both BWF and the other national bodies/players are not in sync/on the same boat with BWF's intended purpose.
IMO, the former goal has failed while the latter goal can probably be beneficial to a few independent players.
Maybe not enough incentive to go through another tourney??(no ranking pts given? not enough monetary rewards?)
If BWF can't even get the 8 top ranked players/pairs to compete, let alone the top ranked player/pair in each event, I think BWF needs to go back and review their intended goal/purpose of holding this event.
Btw, no WYH, afterall...maybe she changed her mind after chatting with you and your lack of desire to go to JB??..;)

Again based on all the participants here, what a failure SS Year End 2009 except for MD and XD.
Even last week China Open had better top players than this event.
Most of top players from Indonesia and China did not participate here.
Lets review from the best category to the worst category.
Men Double:
Even without MK/HS and Cai/Fu, this top 8 are very good pairs and had some top results this year. All eight of them deserve to be here.
Mixed Double:
Again, this field lack of Indonesia and China pair. But some of the pairs here had done very good this year. 5 of the pair had at leat win one SS title.
Diju/Gutta and Ha/Ko not qute deserving the spots. Though they are in the top 8 of SS rankings, but that just cause they play many SS events. D/G 10 events with only 1 SF and 1 QF. Korean pair play 9 SS events, 1 runner up and 2 QF.
Hendra/Vita are much better than them. too pity they only play 5 SS events. But they reach 1 runner up and 2 SF from 5 events.
And the world Champions Kamila/Thomas not even close in the ranking.
But overall six pairs still very good.
hcpoirot
11-25-2009, 03:23 PM
Men Singles:
Then Men Single still quite competitive. At least China sent BCL and Indonesia had Taufik. But Hsieh from Taipei? Come on! From 9 SS events, only 1 SF and 1 QF.
But we still had three players who win SS titles this year. Good.
Women Doubles:
Just a nightmare without any China pair or at least Indonesia pair. The Danes pair Kamila/Lena already split. And probably 2 of the Korean pair and The Chinese Taipei pair too. But with WPt/TEH, these 5 pairs still quite strong .
But the rest of the three just a JOKE in the top 8 ranking.
Jenny/Gabrielle from England. 10 SS events with only 2 QF. SEVEN of them lost in FIRST ROUNDS. But thanks to BWF ranking points they ranked 10 in SS ranking.
Duang/Kunchala. Ranked 12 in SS ranking. Play 9 SS events. Only reach ONE QF. FOUR of them lost in first round. 4 of them lost in second round.
But the worst of all had to be Nicole/Charmaine. They ranked 14 in SS ranking just because they play 10 SS events. Their results? Terrible. EIGHT time lost in first round. And only TWO times reach second round.
And they are best of the eight???
Okay so the Chinese and Indonesia won't send any pairs. But BWF can give wild card to the fav fans pair of Japan Maeda/Suetsuna.
They only play 4 SS events, but they reach a Runner Up and QF once. Very good compare to the above three pairs.
hcpoirot
11-25-2009, 03:44 PM
But the worst of it all had to be Women Singles field where so many top players absent.
Women Singles:
Only 4 players deserved to be in the top 8.
Lu Lan the world champion holder. Saina who win SS titles. And the ever consistent Pi Hong Yan. And yao Jie who although not as good as 2-3 yeas ago but still managed to reach SF of SS events twice this year.
The rest of the four just so so players. (Salakjit, Nicole, Julianne and Kim)
Between the four of them, they play total 33 SS events but they only reach a total of 6 QF. Rest of them were just first or second round lost.
BWF at least can give one wild card to Eriko Hirose from Japan. Yes , she only ranked 22 . But she only play FIVE SS events and reach semifinal TWICE from five events. That mcuh much better than the four above player combine.
Bottom line is: If BWF cannot lobbying all the best TOP EIGHT players to play in this supposedly the TOP event of the year, maybe they can start by having a better ranking points. So player who play less events but had much better results can play here, instead of players who qualified just because he/she play so many events with ordinary results.
How on earth the loser of a first round SS event got 2200 points. It is 23% of the winner points. (Winner got 9200 points) That just too much.
Lets say player A play one SS and reach semifinal. He got 6420 points. Player B play 3 SS and lost all 3 in first round. He got a total of 6600 points by just losing in first round and his ranking will be better than player A. Just ABSURD!
hcpoirot
11-25-2009, 03:56 PM
If BWF did not want to change the ranking points, the least they can do is give a wild card for much more deserving player/pair in each category like I suggested.

Different percentages of a winner's ranking points have been tried (not just for Badminton).
This is the simplest, but the harshest one for losers:
Winner ................... 100.0000%

US$40K for MS win and get to keep them all, no splitting...that is >RM150K for 5 days of badminton, not bad, a lot more than plenty professional engineers made in a whole year in MAS...do you think Dato is sad or disaapointed with LD out....with LD and CJ out, and playing at home, LCW has enhanced his winning chances like last year...Dato should sent a thank-you card and commission to LD/CJ and most importantly, to LYB (yes, must be this Li guy again for manipulating the game) some big-time commission $$ for brokering the deal keeping both in CHN...for WD, WPT-CEH could win again like last year, make as much as both can with CHN out. LL playing solo could win the whole thingie and she is 'expected' to split the loot with her teammates back home....;):D:p

Even for the Doubles events, the winning pairs will get $21,000 for each player. So, if LYD wins both the XD and MD events, he could net more than a winner in the Singles events ($42k). Of course, he might have to give up some to the national body.

About WD with the Korean pairs withdrawal: Total disaster! Really horrible. Alongside WS, will be the most boring categories due to lack of top players here. And lack of competition.

Yes, after 3 years of trying, our SS Masters Finals event is still going nowhere.
BWF has to rethink. IMHO, our Badminton Masters Finals event cannot become BIG unless;
(1) Our Badminton players become independent professionals (not controlled by their National Associations)
We cannot compare Badminton players with professional players in Tennis, Golf, Basketball, Soccer, etc...
and/or,
(2) More National Badminton Associations support this event
IMHO, National Associations care more for glory to their national teams' standing/ranking than to their individual players' achievements. For them, it's the total team spirit/glory that counts.

I saw the ATP Tour Finals. It was such fun to see the best play each other as a final tournament of year. I don't think they pay more money than a Grand Slam or an ATP Tour Finals is any near to repute than a Grand Slam. But the players were there and they played class matches.:)
Compare this to SSM Finals. The tournament is a joke and players are making fun of limited number of badminton fans.
Perhaps, the World Badminton body should actually reduce number of tournaments to get better participations.
Hardly anything left in this tournament to watch, when every known player is opting out.

* BWF must make SS final a 'must attend event'
From what I see, the SS Masters Finals was planned by BWF to showcase our best Badminton players. And also to reward our best players.
Unfortunately, currently most Badminton players are subjects of their National Associations. Our players cannot choose what they wish to do.
Perhaps, it is better for BWF to plan to showcase the best Badminton nations/teams. But we already have them; the Thomas Cup, the Uber Cup and the Sudirman Cup.

Wow I just checked out the new version of the SS Finals participants. The WS and WD categorieshad sunk so low indeed.
Unbelievable.
So many players and pairs withdraws.
MS , MD and XD still very strong.
WS and WD had sunk like the Titanic indeed. Not only China and Indonesia players declined to play here. Also the Japanese and the Koreans. OMG!!
Lets see the replacement in details:
WS: (After PHY, Lu Lan , Kim Moon Hi and Judith M withdraws)
Porntip B : Play 9 SS. Seven times lost in first round and 2 times in second round.
Charmaine Reid : BReak the records of all time. How on earth a player who NEVER win in any first round of SS ranked number 27 in SS rankings?
Because she play 10 SS events. Yes. 10 SS events and all lost in first round.
Wong Mew Choo : Only play 6 SS events. 4 times lost in first round. 1 time in second round. 1 time is a QF.
From the above 3 , WMC is the most decent player to been a replacement. And she should ranked higher than the other two although she only play 6 SS events.
But thanks to the "UNFAIR" BWF ranking points , she ranked lower than players who never been in SS quarter finals.

Chou/Chia (Taipei) : Play 6 SS events. 1 QF. 3 second round. and 2 first round lost. Not that bad. They performed better than some pair above them.
Laura/Wenny (France) : Play 6 SS events. 4 times second round and 2 times first round lost. Just not good in top 8 at all.
Maybe BWF should just cut out WS and WD categories this year. The lines up just terrible for "The BEST EIGHT"

Maybe BWF can make better scheduling even if they did not want to cut out any events.
Look at 2009 scheduling as example:
March, April and May only had one event each month. But June had 4 events in a month. What??
BWF can put India open and Asia Badminton Championship in March. Then China or / and Hong KOng SS from Nov to April. Sudirman Cup in May.
Then NOvember should only have one or none SS events. Then they can put SS Master Finals in Nov intead of Dec.
Or they can just put two different events in same week like tennis. Like US Open and Thailand Open can play at the same time.
German Open and Dutch Open can also play at the same time as warm up before All England.

For LCW, this is a dream comes through that LD and CJ are not in, chances improve bigtime winning 2nd SSF especially playing at own 'kampung' (village)...imagine hitting birdies for 5 days and winning the SSF USD$40K cheque worth approx. 2 yrs wage for an engineer in MAS and in time for X'mas shopping for gifts for stewardess GF and chinese new year...life's good..thanks LYB, LD and all the comrades:p:D

As for all these last minute withdrawals, i just thought, perhaps if BWF can't confirm or secure all of the "top 8 players/pairs" to compete, they might as well cancel this entire event. At the end, instead of getting a well received and well attended event by all the top 8 players/pairs, as what BWF envisioned, all we/they get is an event akin to a yr end players get-together exhibition.

Especially for WS and WD, provides a opportunity for those to earn so serious $$$ and who otherwise has no chance of winning SS anyway....yeah, some kind of year end weak players get-together exhibition with expensive entry tickets (if the same as last year price).

Yes. 10 SS events and all lost in first round.
.
We need to remember the SS Masters Finals events are for SS players ranked under the SS ranking points.
Let's look at Charmaine Reid ....... World Ranking = 55, SS Ranking = 27
Then, look at Anna Rice .............. World Ranking = 41, SS Ranking = 77

With no CHN WS/WD, much easier to contest, now who volunteer to face CHN WS/WD?...with CHN in both, no chance lah and bridesmaids as usual....group finisher gets $4250/$2500, heck, winning 3rd round in SS pays less, cannot even buy ticket to fly home:D....on paper and playing at home, LCW must be the favorite, no guarantee he won't lose, pretty Bao is good but he is ain't no LD, the single player that on paper and in real life is above our Dato and would be favorite to win if he plays. Now, does Dato wanna play LD, heck if I am LCW, I tell LD stay home and we can work out a deal:p:D

It used to be between RM10.00 to RM30.00 and free seating. Now they have level 1 & 2, with level 2 allocated with less seats and further away from the courts. With the withdrawals and high ticket prices, I won't be surprised that the earlier rounds on day sessions will be empty. Sad.....

Jealous, you got it wrong Georgie...just emphasize that without LD and CJ, LCW has a better than 50% chance of winning it all, and USD40K is >RM150K and that is far more $$$ than a typical professional worker makes in MAS in 2 years, and that is to play baddy for 5 days...the fact is LCW is so, so lucky to play for MAS who invest so heavily in baddy and see baddy as one sport that can bring her glory, LCW gets to keep 100% earnings, earn bonus, lifetime pension, endorsement, Datukship, etc. and attract stewardess (many of them lah..now, I am really jealous lah...hahaha!!), the point being for a high school dropout to make a fortune in a relatively short period of time, so what is there to complain about pressure, stress, etc. The real world is a lot worse and painful especially with the world economy in a tailspin. Sure LCW has tremendous talent but someone has to pay to groom that talent to be a world class player, and for that he should be thankful to the MAS government and MAS tax-payers.;)

What!!!!@@#!$ KKK/TBH lost!!!?? Aiyooooyooo, WR1 MD also can bunkus-ed playing at home and against a weakened field?? Ya lah, you 'complain' that tiredness is excuse mah.:p:D
HK was KKK/TBH's 3rd tourney. SEA is 6th tourney but two events = team & individual, KKK also playing XD in individual. If you want to separate as 2 also, total= 7 .
Nooo, not SEA Games goner.... figure it out yourself. :p
You've been following KKK/TBH matches for some time, should know the 'trends'.;)
You go by KKK/TBH should win this & that, I look at their past record, at their stamina level, their opponents, etc, etc. LYD/JJS stamina better than the other 3 MD pairs.
With your understanding about their trend, what do you think about their chances in this SSMF.........Helang! :p
