In any sport which is as international as badminton, it can often be seen that players from a particular country or region exhibit certain common characteristics in how they play the game. One example which comes to mind is soccer/football, where different countries play with contrasting styles. I particularly enjoy watching the Brazilians play their beautiful game.

In the US, we never get to see badminton, unless we download video from the internet, or borrow tapes from friends. But I have found from this small experience, and also my personal playing experience, that it seems as if the Indonesians play with a particular flair and style which is wonderful to watch. Their joy and passion for the game comes through in their creativity and court presence. In this regard I consider Indonesian badminton to be comparable to Brazilian soccer.

Since many of the members here have seen much more badminton than myself, I was wondering if others share this feeling, or have any other similar comments in this regard. Comments on past and present individual players/pairs are also welcome.

Thanks,
coupii

PS: I apologize if this is a repeat thread. I did a quick search but was unsuccessful in finding a hit.

Chinese - Singles

They would control the net and setup a lift from the opponents and and go for a smash whenever possible. Their net play are superb. Crossing and all, very tight..... meaning the opponents won't be able to tap the shuttle easily. Evidence..Yang Yang, Chen Hong..

Korean - Doubles especially Park Joo Bong

He won't let the birds pass by the T junction easily. He begin his attack from there whereby he would intercepts whenever possible.

Malaysian - Doubles

Very defensive in nature. The success of Sidek brothers has somewhat gives them a wrong perception on how to win.

Conclusion
.. however it is difficult to generalise the type of game of each country plays because badminton is quite an individual game. Therefore the game shall varies to each individual preference depending to the coach who coach them, their physical abilities...ect.

For example, Wong Choon Han sets up the shuttle at the net and go for the kill and yet Roslin Hashim which is from the same country (Malaysia) plays the outdated four corners rallying game !

Interesting subject. i can't say that i've seen many different teams play - due to the lack of TV coverage. but i reckon it can be compared to football and other sports. over in England we play a more power oriented sort of game, if you look at our best men's doubles players they are sheer power and have physical size coupled with it. if you check out the oriental players they are smaller and quicker - playing a fast but hard rally and run their opponents into the ground through long and clever rallies

i feel same way.Indonesians play with great racquet skills and creativity

eg.Rudy Hartono, Hendrawan,Taufik and all their mens doubles.etc.

Chinese players except for occasionally special talents like

Yang Yang,Zhao,Sun Jun, Chen Hong ,Lin Dan, play as though they

have just been mass produced from a factory,Esp their Men's Doubles.

Traditionally chinese players emphasise too much on Athletism, speed and power

and not on natural talent.
