View Full Version : Sounds like BS

I know this sounds like BS but my timing is really bad at some places where I play badminton, it gets better though if I start playing there regularly. I know the shuttle moves faster or slower depending on the humidity and temperature and I've noticed how I play better in warm gyms but I keep thinking that if you're really good you should be able to play well in any condition. I mean this would be especially bad during tournaments, not that I compete in any.
Well in any sports it is possible for a player not to do well in an unfamiliar place so it's not that odd that it would take you time to adjust. I don't think there is anything wrong with you, just need to play more and maybe shorten your adjustment period needed in case you ever do decide to play any tournament.

Maybe other factors u can also consider: light, wall color, material of floor, brand of bird u use (assume ur club provide bird), particular opponents' skill level/style.

Yes, the floor is one thing that I find myself becoming picky about eversince I played at the YMCA which has an abrasive rubber flooring. But I didn't think that has anything to do with timing, does it?

Surely it does.
Floor can seriously effect ur foot work as well as jump. Without proper foot work and jump timing, racket swing timing could be effected as well.
floor can affect your "feel" for the ground and affect your movement, speed, etc. Even if the material is the same, it could be a different color and that will mentally created an adjustment needed for you to play well.

Holy crap! So basically every little thing counts, given all these factors it's a wonder how people adapt fairly well in new environments.

Well... Here comes "experience"...
Usually, ppl who have more experience will adjust to a new environment much faster than rookies. That's why the pros can play fairly well everywhere, but ppl like us can get into some trouble while switching around gyms.
One of the biggest factors is wind or draft. If there is a slight draft, it will throw the timing off slightly but enough to miss hit or frame the bird.

The two things that affect me the most are perceptual: (1) background--how well does the shuttle stand out, and (2) space around the court--number of courts in the building, closeness of the walls, height of the ceiling. It takes me a few minutes to adjust, even if I'm familiar with the place.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned lighting yet.

I thought I did... ;)
Read my 1st post. I always believe light can really effect my play. If the light is too bright, it's going to kill my eyes when I look up. If that teams up with some shinny white bird, nightmare begins.
Got a pretty cool way to solve lighting problem. Different color birds. This one place I play at, the light is so bright that white birds can't be seen, and if you switch to yellow birds, well the walls are yellow so doesn't help there either. Just picked up some GREEN feather shuttles from Hi-Qua and they work great, now I just gotta get use to playing with green shuttles. :D

What about a combo like this, "bright light, yellow wall, with upper half coverd by green wall paper???"
heheheheeheh... Just make it up, don't know if ever such places exist. Maybe if yes, I have to paint my bird to be red or black something... :D
Imagine lighting that is very bright and a background of camouflage so that the bird is not easily discernable from the background (actually almost invisible). This will really make badminton challenging.

If you really want a challenge, try badminton blindfolded.
