View Full Version : Sun Jun
stephenli 11-22-2002, 07:28 AM What has happened to Sun Jun? I last heard of him winning the 1998 All England.
Why is he not playing now? ...Injury? Age?
I reckon he is one of the greatest players ever produced...agree?
Tezta.com 11-22-2002, 08:26 AM Sun Jun had a number of injuries. I read that his back and knees troubled him a lot. Yes he was one of the greatest players in the world of badminton.
Didn't he play in the 2000 olympics?
Cheung 11-22-2002, 11:09 AM Lost to Hendrawan in the 2000 Olympics in the Q/f stage.
Surprised you didn't hear of him winning the 1999 World Champs.
The only men's singles player to win two consecutive WGPF titles.
'Retired' from International badminton after Sydney.
Won the very prestigious All China Games in 2001 with his wife in mixed doubles (there are big financial rewards for any winners from their home province) and got to the s/finals of the men's doubles.
going to be a father soon?
Sun Jun surely is one of the greatest players.
He lost to Peter Rasmussen in 97 world Championships Final
because of injury. He lost to Fung Permadi in 96 WGP Final
due to injury too. And he won 97 , 98 WGP and 99 World
Championships titles. I is now a coach of Jiangsu Province, and
he is going to have a baby.

interesting, I was thinking the same thing when I read that. :D but then the next line is "he is going to have a baby." back to third person. Could be a typo, even better if it is the real Sun Jun. :D

Don't bet on it. I think it is highly unlikely given the probable level of English of Chinese players who have been training in badminton most of the time from young.
TOmike 11-22-2002, 06:24 PM if what cheung is saying is correct, and his english is poor, then how could he have found out how to post on this forum??
Cheung 11-22-2002, 06:31 PM "probably" poor english.
I never met the guy so I don't know.
Maybe Kwun can update us from gossip on chinabadminton.com
not much gossip about Sun lately. i think he is now enjoying family life. good for him, i think he deserves some rest after all those hardwork in the national team.
oh, other than that little snippet about him playing with Liu Yong for the Jiangsu province team in MD.
I am sorry for the mistake. I mean "He" not "I".
It seems that I should improve my english ablility.
Sorry for all guys who care about Sun Jun. In fact,
I am one of his fans. It is not a gossip that he is
a coach. I am from China. I know that he is the
men's single's coach of Jiangsu province. He said
that he loves this game and can not give up. And
he would like to teach his experience to the young
players.
TOmike 11-22-2002, 09:58 PM there is no problem, we are all his fans, i guess we just made a big deal out of a small error.

I do not think he is playing MD now. The main match now in China is 2002 Club Team's Final. And he is not in the player's list. As a fact, he is not playing since the 9th national game of China (held in Nov,2001) where he got the gold medal of XD with his wife Ge Fei. He announced retirement after that. I think it is the best way of farewell for him. I think it is very difficult for him to compete with the younger ones now because of injury and stamina.

After Sun Jun and Ge Fei won the mxd doubles in the All China games, they embraced each other on court for ages. I think it was very touching. Did a lot of people in China think that as well?
After they received their medals , they ran to the crowd and threw their flowers to the people. I thought it was a great gesture........
If not for that 97 defeat in the WC, he would be regarded as the greatest Men's singles player of the modern era.

At least I think it was touching! I am happy for him. He was very exctied after
winning the match. He also threw his racket with which he just won the gold medal to the people.
He is my favorite player. I think he has played many wonderful matches. 97' defeat is not his fault, he was injured badly and exhausted in the deciding game, he even can not move. Every one knows that he can not win, but he just did not give up, and can you believe it, he got 10 points in the deciding game! I am moved by his spirit of never giving up. I am proud of him! In fact, in 96's WGT final against Fung, he was injured in the right knee, and I believe that it is difficult to say who will win if he were not injured. And he refused to retire and keep fghting. I think the result was not so important at that moment. I think a lot of people like him not only because of his skill bu his fighting spirit.
TOmike 11-23-2002, 10:48 PM i have only seen him play once.. and that is the match against Rasmussen. I was proud and touched by his play and composure, even an amateur like me knows a real good player/person when i see one. i just wish i could get more footage of him.
Cheung 11-23-2002, 10:52 PM Agree!!
His fighting spirit is amazing even when the opponent seems to have all the advantages.
The only other match I have seen that might be close to fighting spirit is 87 World Champs when Morten Frost has played Yang Yang in Beijing. Frost has to fight against the the whole chinese audience. Only in that one Frost didn't get injured......
