Hello everyone, I'm not here as often now since I'm quite busy from school, work, sports, and badminton, but don't worry, I haven't left BF. :)

Anyways, on to my question. Does anyone have any information on the very old World Championships, like around 1945 or so. My badminton club hosts an annual tournament which goes under the name of a now-deceased badminton player. I was reading a newspaper article in March about this player and apparently he was a World Champion in 1945! I think that was the year quoted. Anyways, I searched on the internet and the world championships didn't start until later than the year stated

Now what I want to know is if the information was really true, then there was a former world champion who played at my badminton club. Can anyone confirm a Canadian World Champion winner in any recorded history for me? It sounds unlikely, but I just want to know for sure. Perhaps he just won Canadian Championships and the article writer miswrote it as World Championship. The player's name is Doug Grant.

The All England used to be regarded as the unofficial world championships before the offical inception of the WC.

The only N American male I can recall (off hand) as winning was Dave Freeman. Apparently he was a neurosurgeon.

Judy Devlin Hashman was another very famous player from America

Who was the American?

The All-England was the unofficial world championship before the advent of the World Championships. From the US, Dave Freeman won the All-England once and Judy Devlin won the All-England several times. The US was a badminton power in those days. With TV and TV sports, badminton became less popular in the US.

Here is a URL with the All-England champions (in Danish)

Go to http://www.badminton.ca/

Under News, select Champions. Then select Canadian National Champions.

He was your MS Champion in '33, '34, '36.

TOMike:

Yes, the player, Doug Grant is now deceased. Thus our annual Doug Grant Tournament is now called the Doug Grant Memorial Tournament.

Californian:

Thanks very much for finding this information and clarifying for me. I guess the writer did mistake Canadian National Championships for Worlds. Oh well, at least I can say a previous (very previous) National Champion played at my club. :D
