Well, we've done racquets, strings & shoes already. What about grips? what do you guys use? I use prince. Which prince grip? i have to go home and check.

I also use Prince grips, albeit tennis racquet grips. They are very tacky, work well when sweaty, last a long time and are reasonably priced. They are a bit long, so I have to cut some off the end, but that takes only an extra 30 seconds or so.
yeah, i use Prince grip as well. they are also branded as Fleet grip. as least, the Prince and Fleet grips i've bought looks and feels exactly the same. i even got the same type of allergic reaction from them... :)
i started using Alpha grips lately. it is also a "leather" type grip. less shiny and a little bit thinner than the Prince ones.
anyone use towel grip? i used them back when i was in high school, but they get dirty very easily and they are not as easily changable like the leather grips.
I use karakal extra tacky grips and wilson cusion-aire over grips. I personally like the karakal grip because I only have to wrap 1 layer as oppose to many wilson overgrips to achieve a very comfortable size. I also use karakal for squash which makes the transition from badminton to squash less troublesome.

I like the Yonex Super Grap Model A440. This grip provides good cushion, abosorbent and tackiness. However, you have to change the grip often because it loose tackiness very fast.

I use grips from Mizuno. They have much better feeling than Yonex however they are not durable. There are Japan made and PRC/Taiwan made version of Mizuno grips, and both of them are very difficult to find in Hong Kong (again, Luxis has them). I found that both version are similar except the Japan made version is more expensive and having more variations (in color, style, etc.).
I use towel grip, and have done so for a number of years now. I belive I have tried every brand and model around and still the good ol´ towel is the only one that does it for me. Wy? Simply because it helps me keep a loose grip instead of a firm. That give me a better feel for the shuttle. As for lastability I´d say its not as good as most other types of grips, but they are reasonably cheap. I also use yonex carbonex series, so I guess I´m old school in many senses.

I use mostly Ashaway grips. I use the Ashaway Super Grip. Its really cheap and sticky but its only down side is that it isn't very durable. Needs to be changed about once every month.
I also use towel grip. I agree that they get dirty very easily and are not as easily to change, but for anyone who's palms sweat alot. They are indeed better.
I was curious to see how sanitary my equipment was and was suprised at the results. My regular tacky grips and bacterial fungus growing on it, but enough to cause any danger unless you basically licked it. Then I took a look at my towel grip and boy was it horrible, there was some sort of fungus that was growing on the grip. Apparently this fungus was giving off spores, and well you can figure out the rest. I've since switched fully to tacky grips and will never touch another towel grip again. I've also seen towel grips with some sort of white fungus growing on it, after a few days.
Bleh - that really makes you think... And how about your wrist bands? Come on, SURELY you don't wash that after every session, do you guys? Well, I don't. I wonder what lives there. No, please, I don't wanna know!

I got a few of these recently from Luxis (where else).
Previously, I tried the Fleet tacky grip. OK initially but after a few sessions with the very hot and humid conditions, out went Fleet.
Then I tried a yonex grip (thick type), Has a ridge running along it with holes in the ridge. Actually, the tactile feel was excellent...in the beginning. Again, after a few sessions ---> into the bin.
So back to the Mizuno grip. It is a thin grip with a thin strip of sponge that runs down the centre of the wholelength on the underside (rather like a monorail). When wrapped around the grip of the racquet, it produces a slightly irregular surface good for tactile sensation. The grip seems to last better than the Yonex or Fleet grip. Not sure if that sponge absorbs some of the perspiration. I have an ordinary thin grip wrapped around the wood of my racquet and then this Mizuno grip on top of this.
So far so good. But it is expensive. I think it's a direct import from japan.
I was wondering what brand of grips you're using. Right now I'm using Yonex's super grap and I'm considering changing to the Yonex Towel Grip but I heard so many bad complains about it, especially the amount of sweat it absorbs over time. Is there any grip that feels like a sponge but won't add much weight to a racket???
Thanks!

I personally don't like towel grips, i tried it only once before and i really hated it.
I'm currently using a Yonex Kush Tec grip. Not the longest of lasting grips but its good enough for me.....

i have tried only a couple of grips over the past 14 yrs.
yonex towel, grap, tournagrip, kush tec, prince, and some no name.
the towel was only good for a very short while. most ppl who wanted to use towel is because they have a lot of sweat, like me. in general, if you have lot of persperation, grips will not last long for you. the towel grip has the lowest durability of all! probably 2 night's of play! i don't like it.
the grap was ok, as i am still using them. it does has some spongyness to it to absorb minor shock which the towel doesn't.
tournagrip is really great for heavy sweaters. they are light weight as well. their price is virtually the same as graps, may be a buck more. it really absorbs persperation well, but it doesn't last all that long. may be 2-4 months . this is the best grip for sweaty hands i find so far. the best thing is that it DOES NOT SLIP in sweaty palms.
the prince also has grip that is similar to the tournagrip. but i forgot it's name. i m going to try it next as my tournagrip is finished.
kush tec is very nice and spongy. it's a nice grip if you love thick grip. i only tried this grip for a night's play long time ago, so i can't remember now.

Tournagrip. Pkg of 3 grips is $4 US, does not slip, as Avatar said, and is available in the sports dept. of big chain stores. Also, tournagrip is thin and doe not change the size of the handle very much. I tried thicker grips a few times, cush types, but could not adjust to the feel of the racquet in my hand.
I agree with Avatar's comments also.
Have any of u guys tried what a Grip! Man i really liked it a lot!
I am currently using the Prince Duraperf Contour overgrip. I actually use it for my tennis racquet but I also like it on my badminton racquet. It's a little big but it still feels nice.
Has anyone used this grip? My friend just bought one, and it seems to be really high quality, and it's only $8 CDN.
Clive

Out of the box it is the tackiest, best grip I have used. When you sweat on it for long enough that tack goes but it's still OK. I have it on my squash racket and one of my baddy rackets. The ribbed version is the one I preferred at the time.
I also tried a tacky Slazenger grip and found that was less tacky to start with but stayed tacky for longer.
When I bought my MP100, however, I gave up on tacky grip replacements and started using cushioned overgrips instead. I obviously have to change them more often, but I prefer the softer feel and they seem to give me finer control over the balance of the racket. I use the ProKennex cushion grips because they are very cheap.
In a perfect world I would like the cushioning and the tackiness, but I can't be bothered buying every overgrip on the market until I find the perfect one. Any recommendations from anyone?
Clive.

Yonex tower grips after a while feels sticky.. dpends on how much your palms sweat... but mine after 4 times of play (2-3 hrs each) they become sticky and kind of rough... and also... they are pretty heavy (they feel like they are about one third of my racket's weight)... so if your racket is head heavy... and you put the towek grip on it... u'll even out the weight a bit... so smashes are slower and they tend to be less accurate... (at least on my MP100 it's that way) so... i changed it back to the grip the racket came with... I'll test out the power on the smashes next week... n I guess I'll "report" back? ^^
This is a tennis grip! But I think It is very very good! So pls try it! I guess u would not mind spending 3USD!

I'm not too keen on towel grips. I sweat a lot, but I found that I prefer a sticky grip over a towel grip... and a wrist band to act as a "stopper".
I really like the Prince Dura-Tred overgrips. They're sticky yet absorbant, and they keep their stickiness for much longer than any other overgrips I've tried.

The Shvabrah grip is the best by far. All professionals use it. It absorbs different amounts of sweat and releases when thirsty. Agree with karakal with reasonable lasting, RSL is even better but more expensive.
Prince Dura-Tred (it's an overgrip). Lasting, tacky, absorbant. I've been through at least 10 brands. Nothing beats the Dura-Tred. It's actually a tennis grip, so it should be easy to find.

Yep. Prince DURATRED is great stuff. Yonex Grap is garbage, shreds to quickly. Wilson Cushionaire is not bad either.
the very best grip (by far) that i have ever used is Mizuno Xyst.
it is very sticky (if you like sticky), lasts very long, the stickiness stays after more than 8 months of use, and it stays sticky when moist/wet. the feel is also very good. it is a little soft, but not too soft to be mushy.
the only down side is it is expensive. HK$50 per grip.
i found it in Luxis in Hong Kong. i have never seen it sold anywhere else...
i have used so many other types, Yonex, Prince, Alpha, Fleet, you name it. none of which is as good as Mizuno.
Thanks for the input kwun, and badrad...

I'll second Kwun.
Some of those Mizuno grips are amazingly long lasting.
Using other brands is a problem because then I have to grip more tightly and then racquet manoevrebility is reduced. I got really sweaty hands.

Due to my massively sweaty hands, I had to switch to towel grips. My experience with even expensive Yonex grips hasn't been good. They wear out too fast due to low thread count and feel so thin. I can't find good synthetic grips that absorb the kinda sweat I have :). Anybody faced similar problems?
First and foremost i have to ask u this! Does ur sweat run down from ur wrist and hands on to ur palm or Ur pam itself sweats in spite of wearing a wrist band! In case u hate to wear a wrist band then The Next best solution is Towel Grip!
Incase u hate Towel grip then The next Best solution is something called WHAT A GRIP! Try it!
Best of luck!
okay...
I said i'd have a review for some grips...but so far i've only tried 2 types
YONEX WRAP
...Its good for the first 4hours of play... and then it shreds down to nothing!!!
Price duratred overgrip
This is the same size as the yonex crap...but its more durable, and more rubbery...
I find that combining the use of yonex crap as the first layer....and then duratred as the second layer...gives a very nice comfortable cushiony long lasting grip !!!

There are other brand name of grips that are cheaper yet good. I find that my palm is sweaty after the beginning of a game. Then I used those liquid/cream that dries up your hand (forgot the name) and they work very well. I personally don't like those tower grips so I stick to those sythetic grip, which I change quite often.
Cheung

Mizuno grips. They are thin grips so another underlayer of a thin grip seems sufficient for me.
I also use Yogi's suggestion.
I consider my hands a very decent test of grips. Most grips are good new but the real test is how long for?
GregorPI

I bought the PACIFIC towel grip. It comes in one long towel stripe (cca. 5 grips long). You must cut the length at your own need, which is cool cause you can make the grip thinner or thicker that way. It only costs as 2 Yonex towel grips but must remind you that you actually get 5 grips length.
The towel grip tends to harden when it dries out. That is manly because of salt, so I try to wipe the grip with wet (not soaked) sponge or towel, then let it dry and afterwards I use a hard brush (the one for hand-washing) to brush a grip.
It's not like new but is 70% better. Try it out. This is a trick I figured out recently. My palms sweat A LOT and the only grip that does for me is towel grip and this 'technique' keeps it in shape, so you don't need to change it that many times and u don’t get blisters either.
Good luck,
Gregor

Karakal are well known for making the best grips, for example the 'Kushy Grip' or the standard PU grip, both are these are very good and durable. I tend to use the Ashaway Super Grip, mainly because i get sweaty hands and these become more 'Grippy' (good word!) as your hand sweats. If your hand does sweat, then towel grips maybe a possibility, Yonex towel grips for example. But if you want a good frip then get the Karakal PU grip, it all goes down to preference...

Hi all,
Sean: What grip have you got at the moment and what do you mean wet, as in slippy?
Jay: I think it's quite close between Yonex and Karakal, but i think Karakal have the grip expertise and Yonex have the racquet expertise. Don't get me wrong, Yonex are good for grips, but i don't think you can beat Karakal.

Yonex grips arn't durable... I haven't really used towel grip much but I don't think those are durable either...
Karakal ones feel pretty good although I only had a chance to use it when using friend's racquet.

personally, i like the think cloth ones, because they have a nice feel... but unfortunately, i wear them down too fast.... so now i usually use the yonex ones... cuz they're quite durable... unless someone wants to recommend a durable cloth one...
For me, a grip usually lasts about 2 months (6 hrs play /wk) as my hand don't perspire much.
I prefer the Yonex Grap though I've tried other tacky-feeled grips without any noticeable differences. As to durability, you can always reuse the grap by unrolling and re-rolling from the other end. Though at less than $2/grap, I usually re-wrap with a fresh roll.

Sean,
Well there are many good towel grips out on the market at the moment, for example the Yonex and Ashaway towel grips. But if you want a good grip which is super absorbant then i would get the Yonex towel grips.
Go to www.centralsports.co.uk I feel these are the best suppliers and they dispatch the product the same day as the recieve the order. The Yonex towel grips come in at £2.00, where as Ashaway do a long roll (20 meters) for £19.99 (red only). The choice is up to you, but it's up to you which ones. Also, the Ashaway grip powder would be good also.
Hope this helps
Matt
My current favorite is the Babolat "Pro Team", which has a dry, spongy feel. They also make a "VS", which is thinner and a little less spongy. That comes is a charcoal gray color which goes so well with the MP77!!

Hi all,
It all goes on preference really and how your hand is. If you have a small hand, it's not worth having a chunk as thing on the racquet handle. The best thing is, sweaty palms go for spongy or towel grips, Yonex, Ashaway and Karakal just to name a few. Get a bunch and try em....

I found these two grips very similar.
Even in extremely sweaty conditions, the grips are still effective.
The Kimony grip is cheaper.
They are both thin grips. I have G4 grips (without the leather grip) with an ordinary thin grip over the wood and then the Mizuno/Kimony grip.
These grips are starting to become popular in HK. I've seen two friends also use the same grip.

Generally, most pple (including internationals) will use a smaller grip. Not too small of course! If the grip is too thick, it may lock your wrist or cause some immobility. Also, having a thick grip may not enable you to switch from backhand grip to forehand grip (vise versa) properly or fast enough.

I suppose your hand doesn't sweat that much, that's why. :)
Cheung,
I am surprised to see that ur rackets have Grips over the cone as well.I rarely see singles players do it! None of my singles rackets(Slim 10's) have this. It was surprising as I know that u are majorly singles player.
I would agree with Modious abt Toalson. They are very good and i love their repalcement grip.U could try wilson Champsport(R) or Pacific Over grip.If u want u could try WHAT A GRip for the feel and not for the durability.
But i woudl still say that Towel is the best and U can change it every 2 days if u prac regularly. All u need to do is buy a big towel of ur choice and some Glue. I would advise u to remove the Orginal grip which comes with teh racket and then add wiremesh bandage made of cotton which is used by doctors for dressing wounds.
after u carefully roll a small piece of it then U can stick ur Towel Grip with decent Glue on to the racket. Thsi way The racket will maintain balance as well give u the most Comfortable grip.
I always strip My racket handle naked and then use a Torno and then a towel grip.
Dont buy Towel Grips. U shoudl make them and it hardly takes 2 mins to get one done. With ur own towel u get the best choice of length and material that u want. Here the Big TURKEY TOWEL(as it is called) costs abt Rs 100/- and the Towel Grip is too pricey.I can make abt 40 Grips from a Towel and they will last me for abt 40 days for 2 rackets if i prac real hard.
U couls also wear a good Wrist band that will stop the flow of sweat from Ur forearm to ur wrist and then onto ur palms. I knwo very few plp actually sweat in their palms. so u try out a wrist band and then see whether u still sweat in ur palm. If u sweat a lot then u need more thab 2 WB ofcourse.
Have fun and best of Luck for the search of teh most suited grip.

Yogi,
I do play doubles sometimes:)
Although I keep a lot of racquets, it's inconvenient to take five racquets to a session. So I just take three and use them for doubles. Wrapping the grip up to the cone doesn't seem to make much difference..
I find Toalson Extra Dry and Tack (spelling?) to be a little disappointing. Colouring from extra dry comes off and extra tack seems to slip after a short time. My hands do sweat a lot and I find extra tacky grips to have that slipping problem (eg Pacific Over Tack). It may be me but I find tacky grips to be less absorbent.
Tourna, I have not used for years but it used to give me blisters (at least initially). Its a thin grip.
I generally prefer thinner grips and I like the Pacific Le Grip and Ashaway (made in japan) which has cushioning for the last 2 fingers.

You're going to have to tell us what you're like to suggest an overgrip.
I hardly sweat at all, however I play with a very loose grip and the handle moves around a lot in my hand during my shots (to get the extra finger punch ;)). As suchky grips give me blisters like crazy (and stick to my fingers so impede the last bit of acceleration through my hand ;P).
I started with a cheapy Pro Kennex overgrip, which was fan-bloody-tastic, however before I could buy them out of stock they stopped making them :P. I moved onto the Wilson Champ overgrip, which was tacky and sucked. Next Puma Duragrip, also didn't like. Found the Wilson H2Over grip which was really nice and incredibly smooth (also supposedly absorbs sweat well, butI wouldn't know). However IMO overgrips once applied over another rubbery grip should not move! This thing was nearly as slippery on the back as it was the front! Have to reapply every couple of hours play, eventually glued it, which is really a waste of a perfectly good grip underneath :P.
Now I agree with the other guy who said he like the Babolat Pro Teams, these ROCK! Not quite as slippery as an H2Over, but pretty close, just a slight bit of tack, and they don't move much on the handle. However they don't seem to last long :( I rotate between four raquets (well three now that I broke my TI SA) and the over grip on one is already quite worn, probably hasn't been used for more than about 20 hours.

I was wondering what sort of good OVERGRIPs there are out there. Lately, i've been using some pro kennex grip but over the past half year, i've just been experimenting.

Yonex Japan Towel Grips (AC402 and AC404) are better than the normal Yonex Towel Grips....
I'm also using Pacific Towel Grips, not bad... but doesn't last long as well.
Towel Grips don't last. One way to slow the process is to use wrist bands. This way ALOT less sweat gets onto the towel grip IMO. I'm quite sure the towel grips will last 2 times longer at least!

I always use wrist band, for both of my wrists. One for preventing sweat dripping down onto my grip and the other is to for wipping sweat off of my forehead. I have seen people of the long wrist band that cover about half of the forearms. If you sweat a lot, you will need it.
You don't want your racquet to fly in mid air during a smash.

I sweat excessively that it's just pointless using towel grip, since I'll have to change it pretty much every match. Right now I am using a racquet ball glove on my racquet hand and that helps a lot, help me with better gripping and the glove also has decent wrist support and feels quite comfortable.
I haven't really tried Towel grip myself... but only use it if your hands sweat...
if they don't you racket flys out of your hand...
I,myself, don't use towel grip because my hands barely sweat.. but I don't think towel grip is very effiencent because you have to change it fairly quickly..

Can anyone who reads this thread please tell me what grip they are using and what you think is the best grip???;)
I use to use yonex super grap however i found that do not suit my purposes. At the moment i use Karakal PU super grip. They last for a fair amount of time and is very tacky even in the later stages of the grip life. I play once a day everyday and sometimes even twice a day and the PU super grip lasts me a lil over a month however keep in mind that the PU super grip is a replacement grip and isn't an overgrip like Yonex. IF you can get a hold of mizuno i've heard good things about them. Kwun should be able to give you more info about mizuno or better yet do a Search on Grips in the equipment forum. Hope this helps.
Merry Christmas,
Nick
i use kwista towel grip...
quality is only decent..
but it's cheap!!!
i can afford to change it after every session!
but it usually last me ard 2 weeks, which is around 6 sessions i guess

well..i've asked this question b4...and answers i've gotten have been
-you gotta try them out and see which ones you like.
I know where you're getting..you'd like ppl to name a few so you can try them out? well, my advice is, once you find one you really like..don't bother trying other ones...stick with the one you like.
Well, i could suggest...
Pro kennex...not sure which one..but one of those in that line is pretty good

I think it's best if you try out different ones yourself to see what characteristics suits you. I love my Black Knight competition grip because it's smooth and and hard. Most people would rather have soft and gel-like grippy. Also consider how well it absorbs sweat (BK competition is horrendous at this).
My ultimate grip has to be the Prokennex Soft Plus....
It is really tacky, lasts a long time and suprisingly, its thin and soft/cushy at the same time......
but the best part of it is, is that it comes in a pack of three for the cost of $5 Australian which is around $2.50 US

BK Ultra grip is pretty nice.. its pretty sticky at first, and it gradually decreases.. i don't sweat much so i couldn't tell you the sweat factor.. durability is good, it is not wearing off too much, been using it for about 2 months.. 7 hours a week. :D

I've used alot of grips and the only one I really liked so far is the Black Knight Competition Grip... I just put a new grip on yesterday: Yonex Super Grap - Synthetic Grip Wrap and I'm waiting to test that today. It feels pretty good.
yonex super grap is pretty nice, but it wears out fast for most of my friends using. overall it is pretty good though. because of sweaty palm situation, I am using victor's towel grip and so far it is working out great. love the feel and the price isn't too bad if you buy them in roll which can wrap like 12+ times.

personally i like to stick with the old fashion style grips like the alpha sticky grip...its juss a normal synthetic grip...taht worsk fine cuz when i play my hands sweat alot and the grip tends to keep in contact still and not slip..i find that twoel grips r good but they wear out pretty fast...:p

whats it called, anyone know??
i think its great, especially when it comes right out of the dryer (when u wash it)
its comfy but the only down side is u have to wash it and when u wash it, it becomes thinner, after all, it is fabric..

ohh man, that sounds good...usually the towel grips i encounter have that sticky thing on the back that allows it to stay/stick on the other grip or the handle? well, preferably, i would not want that...but from what how i understand it, ur towel grip doesn't have that sticky sticker thing? if i'm not mistaken? too bad you don't know the name..

For performance, BK Competition grip is hard to beat (if they can make it more sweat-absorbant.) For comfort, Wilson Aire does a great job.
after trying so many different types of grips, Yonex Grap, Yonex dunno what, alpha, Fleet, Kimony and a few i don't remember what they are anymore, the one i like best is still the Mizuno. soft, tacky, long lasting, good wet gripping.
it doesn't absorb sweat perfectly. so really sweaty palm or on very sweaty and hot days, they do get slippery. but that's rare and i usually just keep another racket around so one of them can sit on the court side to dry.
they last so long i have a few Mizuno grips that i switch from rackets to rackets when the first racket break! :)

Used it for 2 weeks and I have 3 overgrips on each racquet. That is just a start but when I change I just keep the other 2 grips which are a base and then I just change the top.
The stock grip with my racquet felt like crap. So slippery.

3 layers of grip? Why not just get a lager grip size racket back then???

It is not as thick as you would think.
Having removed the stock base grip, I had to add many layers to make up for that especially when the Yonex is rather thin and my handle is rather long.
Since there's wood under it, having one would not be grip, it would just add blisters to my play ;) I had to add 2 more to get that good feeling. Plus I added a knob too. :)

I found a grip at Sports Authority called "What a grip". They have them in 2 varieties....Tennis and Squash. It is a one peice "sock" that slips over the racket handle with the aide of a plastic bag. It is super thin, very absorbant but best of all(for me at least) it is super tacky. Gives great control for touch shots and net play. Relatively cheap too at around USD$3.00 each. It comes in a variety of colors for those who care to be color coordinated with clothes etc...

The only reason i ever regrip racquets now is to see if i can make one grips stretch to two racquets - i prefer to feel my racquet - not the cushiness of the grip - i seem to lose control.

Can someone explain something to me:
What exactly is the Yonex GrAp? Is it the normal grip or is it some sort of special grip? I saw it on the website but I have never seen this kind of grip before, those that looked like cellophane tapes.
Most of those that we get here in Malaysia are 'folded'. Is the Yonex Duraplus, VibraTec, AeroTec etc a Grap? (my guess is that, it's not)
A few years ago, I did use DUNLOP, not sure if you guys have heard of it before but it was good. The racquet practically 'sticks' to your hands! :D
Haven't seen any Dunlops for the past few years, I wonder if they've stopped manufacturing them?

I don't know what kind of definition you're looking for but Grap is just a name. It is a super long grip made for tennis as well and it's very sticky and tacky at first. But as you play alot, it wears off and you can burn through the grip easily because it is really thin.

I have very sweaty hands, the grip that suits me very well is the Toalson Tournament or the Pete Sampras from Wilson. The Toalson is a little bit thicker so more durable.
But the grip is perfect, the wetter it gets the more tackier it gets!

I still use Yonex Towel Grip on one of my rackets :-)
To keep it clean, I wash my hand before playing, keep my hand clean (ie. no McDonalds, no Dunkin Donuts :D) during break-time and I dry the grip (using hair dryer) after playing. Then I cover the grip with a small plastic bag.
Marc
Towel grips are good for players who don't sweat much. When wet they add 10++ grams of weight to the racquet and they stink when they dry up. You can minimize the wetness by using a wristband.
I use Prince 'tackier when wet'.....up to the conical tip of the handle. For tournaments I add a whiff of tack powder.
carbonex21

I strip the grip down to the wood then put on a blue plastic sleeve which shrinks when heated. This plastic sleeve is good for three reasons - it builds the grip size, it maintains the edges, and it lets you scrape of any bits of old grip. In other words you can have a really consistent grip. Over this I put a Karakal pu super grip. I've done this on all of my g4 Cab21.
Where do you get the plastic sleeve?
Is it a hockey type grip like those used on hockey sticks and cricket bats??
carbonex21
10-18-2003, 01:11 PM
The ones I have are specifically for badminton but I suppose you can get it for tennis etc. I was given about 20 but I'm not sure of the supplier. The name is Tubex - grip enlarger. It's blue plastic and shrinks down really tight.
check out the link -
http://www.r-a-b.com/Pages/Tubex%20Grip%20Enlarger%20Page.html
Thanks, I have sent an e-mail to them for price etc.
The biggest problem for myself and many other players is that when you add grip to your racket you loose the ridges or faces, I have slimmed down to 3 layers of grap instead of 2 layers of Karakal PU being topped with a Wilson Cusion air. I now remove the original grip and use 3 layers of grap, but even then you still loose the faces after the second layer of grap.
carbonex21
10-18-2003, 03:34 PM
Previously I was using 2 tubex sleeves and one yonex grap. It gave great feel and angled edges but grap just isn't tacky enough. When I switched one Tubex sleeve and a Karakal my power shot up and the touch is still pretty good.
I see a lot of people building up their grip until it becomes almost round but they must be losing a lot of feel. I mean, you need those edges to adjust your grip for all the different shots.
other
10-18-2003, 04:43 PM
Do you really need the edges? Surely the holding position is all relative to the racquet face. I mean, obviously backhands
are played with the thumb along one of the thicker faces......but we all know where the "thick" face is, whether you can feel the edges or not?
carbonex21
10-18-2003, 05:16 PM
It's a matter of degree. If your grip is totally round then your fingers would not be able to sense the exact postion of the racket face. Of course you don't need absolutely sharp edges, but it helps.
You can change you grip for all sorts of overhead shots, not just backhand. Cross-court backhand requires a special grip, slice smash/drop also. Even when you're stretching for a net shot you can shuffle your grip down the handle to gain a couple of inches reach. I'm constantly shifting my grip. A grip with edges just lets you do it better. Similarly a big fat grip reduces the touch because you can't easily adjust it with your fingers
I'll give you an example. Some guy who plays at my club puts a karakal grip on first and then another grip on top of that, resulting in a total roundness. He has never been able to develop delicate shots or good control because his racket may as well be a frying pan.
Imagine you could only have two hand positions - forehand or backhand but nothing else. I think it would be very difficult to play well.

I don't use towel grips but my wife has sweaty hands so she uses them. I found a novel solution to the stinky towel grips you all hate. They're SOCK-TYPE towel grips from Carlton. As you might have guesed, they slip on the racket grip from the bottom end just like a sock and they're held on the grip by elasticity. Of course, it would help if the grip under the sock is as tacky as possible to avoid having the racket twist under the the towel-grip-sock. After every game, we just take of the sock and dump it in the washing machine with our clothes. Presto, a clean and sweet smelling towel gripi ready for use the next day. The towel material isn't too thick so you can still feel the "faces" of the grip under teh towel. We usually have several towel-grip-socks ready since a particularly hot day will necesitate changing the grip several times during the game.
For those of you who don't want towel grips(like myself), I like the wilson champ overgrips and the TOALSON "Wet" type overgrips and replacement grips.

It's actually quite decent. No more problem with sweaty grip since I started using more finger power. Just a little wear in the middle of the handle.
So, I have gone from stock grips to Yonex Super Grap to BK T.U.F. RE-Grip to BK Competition RE-Grip to Yonex Super Grap. Things certainly get simpler and cheaper as time goes on:D.

for ppl in hong kong looking for decent grips at a reasonable price, they sell very good stuff at the store at the shatin sports academy (where the HK team trains)
the one i like is a black hi-qua replacement grip which is thick :D (which i like, i stuck two on one racket) tacky:D which i like and quite soft:D which i like. It is not v.longlasting but they only cost 9 or 10 dollars HK (7 for me, i havea special card)
so you can get 5 or 6 for the price of 1 yonex replacement grip.
btw there is also a grey version with ratheramusing shuttlecock patterns on and ismore durable but less soft and tacky

I couldn't find Yonex Super GRAP anywhere on sale, so I switched to HEAD Pro Grip... it's a cheap and thin PU overgrip. Recently bought two packages (3 rolls in one pack) for $6 each at Sport Mart. Only problem is... it shifts very easily, so now I increased overlapping from 1/5th to 2/5th with enough length left to wrap the cap as well.
Present Grip Configuration: Racquet handle wrapped with electric tape followed by a few overwraps of masking tape (only at the end of the handle to enlarge the butt) and one HEAD Pro grip overgrip.

I believe in their search for the ultimate grip, many players drastically change the balance point of the racquet without realizing it. I have been stringing racquets that are G5 (circumference 80mm) but wrapped with grip that is closer to G2 (circumference 95mm) or even G1. I have seen AT700 that have their balance changed from head-heavy to handle-heavy. The balance point for the AT700 is somewhere near the '7', but some of them have been shifted by 12mm! It is no wonder they blame the racquet, especially the AT700.
usually i use towel grip. Yesterday i tried Prince Overgrip called microzorb. Its tacky and stik to your hand. Even if you sweat. No worries if your racket will fly away. I think this grip is good.

Heheh...
this is a very personal thing, and I'm sure if you've read the comments by your fellow badminton players, they all use different types of techniques for gripping...
Mine is more of a process...
I've noticed with the change in grip sizes, for Yonex grips, that I now purchase racquets for personal use, with only a G3 grip size.
After I get each racquet, I then use one of 2 types of grip, but very very similar textures...
They are Yonex's super grap, or Gosen's anna Kournikova special.
Essentially it's the same type of material, but I notice the Anna's special, being somewhat "fresher" from the package... this perception may simply be due to the fact that the grips I have purchased, were packaged individually. I believe that the Yonex super grap line, that is packaged individually will have the same type of "freshness" LOL
Anyways...
I wrap the single layer of grap/ak over top of the original grip of the racquet.
Next, I apply roughly about 20-30cm length of hockey tape to the butt end of the racquet.
just to make it hardened.
If I do not have hockey tape, I will cut up any old grip into a strip, and wrap it around the butt end.
I prefer hockey tape, just for the fact it's cheap, and it's super sticky.
The reason I do this, is to give me more leverage on the end of my racquet, when I am squeezing my fingers, during pronation of the swing...
Just make sure if you're going to do something similar... make sure to squeeze down the layer of hockey tape to make sure it is solid. Also make sure that the layer of hockey tape is not too wide, otherwise you will really have a fat bottomed racquet, and throw off the balance.
Next, I will wrap an additional layer of grap, or anna's over top of the hockey tape, and first layer of grap, this time, though, I ensure I stretch the grap further, and wrap it up around the cone of the racquet, then I use a little bit of electrical tape to finish off the top of the grip... I find that the adhesive tape that generally comes with grips, doesn't quite do it's job.
So basically I use 2 layers of grap/or anna's, and some hockey tape for my gripping needs LOL
I have experimented with other grips, such as prince's line, and found them to be very nice as well...
This is assuming your hands do not sweat like Don's or Cheungs :D
For those of you with super sweaty hands... i recommend either a towel grip, or something with a fuzzy texture...
If you're on a budget, victor, and fleet, have some awesome products similar to the major brand labels that should suit your budget perfectly, just without the name.
Other than that, it's all good stuff... as long as you're not holding a damp sponge by the time you're done playing lol
Oh one last tip...
For those who are using towel grips...
If you've read Don's post earlier, about amount of bacteria your grips can harbour...
Do yourselves a favor, and everyone around you, to change your towel grips every so often, because they really do start taking in moisture, and bacteria does build up.
Also wash your hands, and never go licking or putting your mouths on people's racquet handles LOL
If so you might as well lick the floor.

Woow nice collection Bluejeff,
I use karakal Pu super grip and it's so soft and confortable. However, it's so heavy, I put 1 layer of eclectrical tape+ thin layer of karakal PU super grip.
My original balance point with was 300mm but with the electrical tape and Karakal grip it makes it to 292-293mm and feel so much heavier than before.
292-293mm balance point= even balance or still head heavy?

It's even balance, but close to the head-heavy side :)
I would consider:
285< : head light
285-295: even

you can put a protective wrap before you add on anything that has a sticky-side tape.

To prevent the sticky tape from ruining your original grip, first wrap your grip with a thin layer of gauze, then tape that with a layer of scotch tape. the gauze and the tape combined will protect your original grip and is very thin and negligible. Then you can wrap your towel grips or whatever grip over the taped grip. The scotch tape will serve like a layer of protection and you can take off the grip with adhesive without damaging your original grip.
I learn this from my trainer in our club. ;) hope this helps

I came across a thin Babolat overgrip that's almost like Yonex Supergrap. Can't recall the name but it's tacky yet not so much as to induce rug-burn on my fingers like the Supergrap. However, it's messier since it leaves colour on the hand. Nonetheless, it worked well for me since I don't sweat much on my hand anyway (probably a little bit of genetics and gripping technique).

Can't seem to find Yonex Supergrap anyway in most of the shops I went to, but the PU Super of Karakal is quite common. Been using the PU Super for some time and I think I'll be using it as long as Karakal is in the business...

Hey, I'm new here, but I've enjoyed reading the discussions in the past. This is my first post. :)
I use a ribbed overgrip that I got from C.Y. Badminton in Seattle. It has a foam rib going through the middle that makes the racquet really easy to hold without squeezing too tightly. It also increases the overall size of the grip. The grip weighs 10 grams, which changes the balance point of the racquet, but I don't mind that. I guess any overgrip will alter the balance point. Does anyone take this into account?

Interesting thread...
am not really a towel grip kinda person....
Personally, I like grips that have a single solitary ridge underneath... helps with control.... currently using the Yonex Ti2000 ... someone told me its a replacement grip and not an overgrip... but it works for me ! downside :- it ruins the original grip with the sticky strips.
Also noticed that tacky grips don't really work for me... they get slippery when a wet...
My current fad is to use white grips for my rackets.. think it looks very professional.....!
(Well if one can't play well - can at least look good !)

and the super grap fixed the slipper part. so with it on, all i have to do now is just replace the super grap if it wears out.
however, even after many months of usage, it still feels very good.

the black knight TUF grip felt a little slippery to me, but i like the ridges on it.
and the super grap fixed the slipper part. so with it on, all i have to do now is just replace the super grap if it wears out.
however, even after many months of usage, it still feels very good.
i think i'm going to cut and peel off the oem grip on each racquet from now on, and put on this combination.

OH MY GOSH:eek:!!! Doesn't the combo tip over your racquet's weight bias:confused:?! Your racquet must be really head-light with those stuff on... unless it's really head heavy in the first place (which might make it slightly balanced).
its not bad actually. just the TUF grip, and the yonex wrap.
295mm balance point now. i'm not too sure what it was before.
i DO notice i have to work a tad harder to get the same amount of power out of my hits - as compared to when i tried my friend's mp - though.

Recently, I broke open the last T.U.F Re-Grip I had on my spare racquet. It reminded me again why I switched to Yonex SuperGrap and other thin overgrips in the first place. I changed my grip too much to feel comfortable with the enlarged grip size, the ridges actually hindered my finger movement and sometimes I couldn't find the face of the racquet w/o looking at the frame during a rally because T.U.F. Re-Grip made the grip rounded rather than hexagonal.

i think its because i started with a small grip size, and only have one TUF re-grip as the base, and one SuperGrap layer on.
i hope you can see it in the following photos, but i think the hexagonal shape is still very prominant. :)
what do you use as your base layer now?
and have you tried the BK competition grip? if so, what do you feel about it?

Actually I moved on to BK Competition grip after BK T.U.F. Re-Grip:p. It's pretty good, but still not thin enough for me after I begin to use fingerpower.
Current combo: base layer is electrical tape to protect the wood followed by a roll of Yonex SuperGrap.

for those towel user out there, you should give a try with white colored synethetic grip. The one that i had tried is yonex grap. I don't know about white grip from other brands.

I am using pacific x grip(rubber with thread) its good but it wears out VERY quick i just changed to grip at late july and hardly playing then and now its rather worn out.. However it absorb sweat and giving a tacky feeling and gives a very good grip...
Here is my 2 cents worth...
Favourite grip of all time...Gripsy original, not sure if anyone knows if it is still available, it isn't here in Canada, not anywhere that I know of. Haven't seen it in 10+ years.
Tried lots of grips, favourite right now is Karakal Peachy in any colour or Klipper overgrips in white only. Even stretched out, it feels soft and spongy.

I've been using Prince Dera-perf for a couple years now. I sweat a terrible amount and I've found this to be the best grip that retains it's stickiness. When I can't get it ( it seems to be harder and harder to find) I use dura-tread, but I find the stickyness of the surface wears down faster.

PArdon my ignorance but I have afew questions that my friends and I are arguing about with regards to the grip:
Over grip and re-grip are 2 different product designed to be used differently?
never remove the original grip that came with the racket, always wrap over it?
remove the orignal grip, then apply new grip over the wooden handle
Over grip are thin, re-grip are thick like tower grips
So which is fact and which is fiction?

Recently, my friend told me that tennis grip on a badminton racket is usually better than badminton grip because it is designed to grip better when u sweat.. any comments?

Everyone wins. No hard and fast rules about the grip. As long as you like it, enjoy it! Many styles and colours comes with it.

hmmm... i think this had been discussed before...
but you got to see...
tennis is played in the open, so if u play during the day, u may perspire more, and therefore a tennis grip may be made to absorb sweat better.
however, a badminton grip also serves its function well if u r in tropical countries and playing under hot and humid conditions.
all in all, u got to try out different grips for different purposes to come up with a conclusion for yourself.
there are good grips, so-so grips, and lousy grips.
