Thanks for alerting us to this. It is fantastic of Jake Downey to share his experiences with us as player, coach and author. I will take sometime to absorb this valuable information. I hope others who want to excel in badminton will do likewise.

No prob Loh. :)
I agree it's very kind of Jake to publish his books on the net. It's very technical as it explains all the strokes used in the game, how, when and why you should execute it etc. Definately a book for all to read as it will improve your game in some way or another.

Hi guys, nice to see a positive response to Jakes books, the last time that I mentioned them (5/6 months ago) some posters thought that they were out of date and irrelevant........ok badminton has moved on in some areas but the books still stand the test of time IMHO.
I've been on a few courses with JD and I do believe that he knows what he's talking about. He now has 4 books available to download, all worth reading if you're a player or coach.
I think its almost impossible to write a book on technique which will not be outdated by the progress of the top level game. (I'm not talking about JD's books here necessarily) After all you have to teach what the top players are doing right? Likewise if you qualified as a coach even ten years a lot of what you may have been told was "textbook" then has had to be rewritten or discarded.
Anyone intending to improve themselves or coach others at any serious level has to look to the very latest techniques
well, it depends. imho it is not neccessary to write a book to cover to very best of badminton. i say that for two reasons. firstly, as many have said, the very best of badminton is always evolving, it is not possible to catch up with it all the time. secondly, the top players makes up may be what, 1% of all the badminton population, the book audience is the 99% of us, where the skills aren't that different than say, 10-15 yrs ago.
Kwun, what you say is very true. However here in the uk few people see top players in action and some of the ideas about how to play or coach are even more than 15 years old!:p
For instance if you wish to excel in badminton and you are an improving player and you get some outdated information and spend even one season practising something which is incorrect/outdated it may take you another season to change your technique again. As coaches we must be aware that the strokes we teach will often be with players for their whole playing career to some extent.
Can I give an example, many people still get taught to hit the rearcourt backhand with their elbow pointing high up at the shuttle during travel to the stroke and with their thumb on the flat backhand side of the racket even if the shuttle is deep. Now any junior still trying to play with this technique will find themselves hopelessly limited if they try to compete at a good level, yet this stroke is still coached and was in books relatively recently.
A big problem in England is that we have been playing catch up with the asians/danes since the mid eighties , the game has evolved and we were left behind.:(
