View Full Version : Come join us and play at UCLA!
Virocon 03-10-2003, 11:28 PM The UCLA Badminton Club in Los Angeles, CA, USA is still an adolescent collegiate organization that sprung up a few years ago and is now part of the Southern California Collegiate Badminton League (SCCBL). Just as in high school badminton, SCCBL is an organized congregation of So. Cal. campuses that compete for actual titles. As SCCBL is also an adolescent organization, we at UCLA wish to see the two of us grow and become well recognized figures in the badminton community.
I am sending out this personal invitation to all of UCLA as well as the general badminton community to help in furthering this goal. If you are a UCLA student and also a badminton enthusiast, come and join the club! If you are a company or organization that is financially capable of helping UCLA Badminton, please contact us.
Info:
contact: uclabad@ucla.edu
or visit: www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/UCLABadminton (http://www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/UCLABadminton)
Any type of help that furthers our goal will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Jason
LazyBuddy 03-13-2003, 10:05 PM Maybe u can invite other ur club members to join here. We can all be the part of large badminton community.
By the way, like ur club pics.
Virocon 03-14-2003, 05:39 AM I/We'd love to come over to New York to play. Unfortunately, our funds are limited that I highly doubt we'd be able to travel to NY. It'd be nice if we can get together to play badminton though.
I'm trying to revamp the website and the history records of our club. The pictures are just of recent matches we had against the schools in our league (SCCBL). In fact, I have some of pics of the March 8th match hosted by UCLA.

Joanne 03-14-2003, 09:55 AM Wow... looks like tiles!!! Or is it my imagination? I never knew badminton courts used tiles before......
Virocon 03-14-2003, 04:38 PM Those are plastic tiles/mats. Because we share a gym with volleyball and aerobics classes we have to be able to allow for different types of court set-ups. I personally don't mind playing on them even if the floor literally moves (just a tad) under your feet especially during dynamic matches.

smashharder88 03-14-2003, 06:47 PM Im a former UCLA student and play badminton twice a week at the Mar Vista Rec Center off sawtelle and palms. My question is how much would it cost if you are not a UCLA student?? I could probably get 4-8 people to show up every saturday but if it costs too much, they will not. You did not list the prices for non UCLA students, is this club open to the public or just UCLA students??
Thanks
Virocon 03-14-2003, 07:07 PM smashharder88: I'm going to the club meeting right now. I'll make sure I find the answer to your question and post it when I get back.

You are surely welcome to NY, all of you.
However, what I actually meant in my previous post, was "welcome to join BadmintonCentral". :p :D
I have a friend studying in UCLA, never know, if I have a chance to visit him, hehheheheheh... Let's rock on the court then.
Virocon 03-15-2003, 01:05 AM What's your friend's name? Does he play badminton? If he used to but not anymore encourage him to! :D
By the way, sorry about the misunderstanding. But wouldn't it be great to get the our two teams together? What school (if any) are you from?

Californian 03-15-2003, 01:46 AM It'll be interesting when you come up with the history of UCLA badminton. I remember US national team members playing at UCLA around 1980. There was a rivalry with Arizona State U.
Virocon 03-15-2003, 04:07 AM Oh my god! Thanks Californian for letting me know UCLA had such a strong badminton history! Once Finals are over I will DEFINITELY get working on the badminton history.
Awesome Fact: What I managed to rummage up so far is that Denise Corlett (who is currently the associate head coach of Stanford's women's volleyball team), in 1977, led the Bruin's badminton team (we had a team!) to the National Championship, winning the singles title and won the Broderick Award, as the nation's top badminton player! This is such shocking news! This is perfect for what is happening to the UCLA team right now.
Thanks!!!

Virocon 03-15-2003, 04:13 AM smashharder88: I asked around for you and it seems that in order to get into the Wooden Center gym for badminton for non-students/staff/etc. would require a membership card which will cost I think about $100 something a quarter or $5 for each time you enter the gym. If you are an UCLA SAA (Student Alumni Association) member you might be able to get a discount on the membership. And we don't host club on Saturdays so it'll only be recreational play. I never come out on Saturdays but more than likely it WILL change starting next quarter.
If you have any more questions, let me know.

Yes, UCLA had a team. I can't remember who else was in the league. CSU Dominguez Hills had a team with Jim Poole as the coach. I think Cal State Long Beach and San Diego also had teams. Back then, you could actually get a badminton scholorship.
Virocon 03-15-2003, 04:29 PM Californian: How do you know so much about the history? Are you an UCLA alumnus? badminton alumnus? Would you know of any place where I can get more information on UCLA's past badminton history. I'll be taking a visit to the J.D. Morgan Center later next week to try to get more information but would you be able to tell me what you know about the history, whether it's facts or personal perspectives?
Thanks,
Jason
LazyBuddy 03-16-2003, 05:10 PM Virocon,

Hey, I know those 2 mix players in the dark shirts, they are my good friends from UCSD. hee hee...
Anyway, Jason, will you be coming to the UCSD national collegiate? Hope to see you around. Everyone else around the area is welcome!!
hum...I was gonna go check out UCLA's club just last Tuesday, but decided to meet my Mar Vista friends else where for badminton instead. I'll go check out UCLA's club sometime soon...
national collegiate (http://badminton.ucsd.edu/tournament_national.htm)
Virocon 03-18-2003, 12:26 AM Yup, those two are from UCSD. UCSD came all decked out in their nifty uniforms at the recent UCLA and UCSB vs. UCSD and SDSU match on March 8th.
I desparately want to go to the national collegiate tourney but a) it's quite expensive b) it's quite expensive. :D I'm still looking into it though so don't count me out just yet.
RedDog, come by our gym this week on Thursday and/or Friday. I'll be done with Finals and ready to play all night! I can't wait.

I will be in the area, maybe I'll drop by. But are you open for non-members? Is there a fee? What time does it start?
Virocon 03-18-2003, 04:01 PM Check the website www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/UCLABadminton (http://www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/UCLABadminton) for the hours. For non-members, I believe the fee is $5 to get into the gym.
I hope to see you there. I'll drag Po to go play too.

Californian 03-21-2003, 01:09 AM Virocon,
I've never been associated with UCLA. I've been playing a long time and I remember hearing that some top players from the LA area (who would have been playing at MBBC and/or Pasadena BC) were attending UCLA and played on the team. I think UCLA even offered scholarships.
I dug back through some of my old material in an attempt to find some specific info, but with very little success. The only thing I found of interest for you was in an article from 1981 about Arizona State winning the national title. The ladies' singles winner at the national tournament was UCLA's Barbara Bidderman.
You could try contacting Vicki Toutz through the USAB. Currently the chairperson for the "Walk of Fame" committee, she was one of the top US players and very active in coaching. She might be able to give you some history. (She may have even been the UCLA coach herself at one time.)
Good luck with your project.
Virocon 03-21-2003, 02:18 AM Thanks a lot Californian. I'll definitely check into that.
Jason
