View Full Version : Essex Champion!!!!!!
Matt Ross 03-15-2003, 11:03 AM Hi all,
Just come back from a tournament and i won the doubles with my partner Andrew Baldwin 21/12 in the finals. It was essex restricted and only the county players could play, so me winning today pretty much means i am now ranked 1st (along with andy) in Essex for doubles. I am over the moon and needed this to get me going. Been a great week so far, was also chosen to represent Essex in the Inter Countis Tournament at Nottingham University. This is competing against 38 different counties and the best in my age group, so my badminton is looking VERY bright now!! :):):)!!
Matt
Yodums 03-15-2003, 11:13 AM Congratulations on your win and good luck on the upcoming tournament.
bigredlemon 03-15-2003, 12:12 PM Congrats MAtt... things are looking on the up and up.
cooler 03-15-2003, 12:36 PM way to go matt, it's a noteworthy accomplishment. Hope u would continue do well in the inter counties ranking as well. After that, we might have to slot you in the Professional Player section ;)
gerry 03-15-2003, 01:09 PM Well done Matt, Winning 21-12 looks as if you had a good day, sounds like quite a convincing win.
I'm taking a team to the ICT in Nottingham on April 14th, so you may end up playing against us, for anonamynity reasons I won't say which county we are but were extremely close to winning it last year, it will be harder this year as our No 1 player is playing in an international tournament abroad and is unavailable.
I'll be keeping an eye on Essex's results and hope that you do well, except against us of course !! ;-)))
Winex West Can 03-15-2003, 01:47 PM Congratulations, Matt. Good showing.
Kevin 03-15-2003, 03:30 PM nice one m8 :) maybe we see eachother over a few months ;)
Cheung 03-15-2003, 05:20 PM
Just a question. Aren't the county restricted tournaments usually played in September? Or is it different times for different counties?
good job man and good luck

Presumably it must be different although ours was in September as you say.
Cheung you seem to know quite a bit about UK badminton, are you sure that you're based in Hong Kong...only joking....how much time did you spend here ?
Matt Ross 03-16-2003, 03:22 AM Cheung,
County restricted yes, we have one in September but thats open to the members of the public, so restricted to people who live in Essex. This tournament was county restricted for those who PLAY for Essex, so i'ts diferent to the one in september.
Matt
coops241180 03-16-2003, 05:48 AM Well done mate, i'm sure it's only a matter of time before u get to the senior squad and what with them being in the Premier A division in the country you will soon be playing against teams what contain the likes of Anthony Clark, Nathan Robertson , Colin Haughton.
Again congrats
Hope to see you on the circuit in the near future
Neil
Great job, Matt! What's your next goal? Hope you will represent England one day and show Joanne and the other young aspirants that they too can do it if they put their mind to it. (Not forgetting the hard work too.)
Of course we'll be watching your progress, so do keep us updated from time to time!
Congrats again.
Slanter 03-17-2003, 11:34 AM What age group are you again, Matt?
edwin 03-17-2003, 11:42 AM Congratulations Matt.
I remember you've onced mentioned that you wish to specialize in singles. Now that you've won this doubles tournament, are you still going to stick with your original plans? Or are you planning on focusing on doubles more often?
Matt Ross 03-17-2003, 12:45 PM Hi,
Slanter: Under 17
I was good at singles a long time ago, but now by doubles has rocketed, and my singles is terrible. In fact, so bad i am goin to leave competitive singles, but doubles i am fantastic at, due to my speed.
Matt
Cheung 03-18-2003, 03:21 AM HK is about to have their Closed Championships. It's stratified into 3 levels. The top group is mainly Internationals, squad players and ex-internationals. In the middle group, I've actually been given a seeded place(5/8) in the doubles! Feel so happy...never been seeded before in such a large tourney. Not sure how they decided what the criteria was for being seeded is though:D:D:D:D
gerry 03-18-2003, 05:32 AM Cheung............very impressive....everything to look forward to........keep us posted as to how it goes for you !!
Just to clarify the adult county restricted is in Sept, the junior (u17) are around now.
I have also taken teams to ict several times, its a pity it often overlaps or follows a euro junior events, still it is an excellent fun tournament.
Congrats Matt!
Cheung 03-18-2003, 10:10 AM So was Matt's win a senior Essex restricted to only county players or a junior one? I'm getting confused.
And are all county finals up to only 21 points? I would have expected three games to 15 for a men's doubles final.
Gerry, although we have a seeded place, I not really sure we can justify it. My partner hasn't been playing much recently and he is less strong at changing pace of the game and forecourt positions. Anyway, it will be nice to see how far we can go. We've only played one game together in about 12 months!! Need a bit more practice.
Matt Ross 03-18-2003, 12:28 PM Cheung,
The essex restricted was the UNDER 17 county players, not seniors, thats in september yes.

Well obviously counties do differ as both of ours were in Sept and October last year.

Couldn't agree more.
dlp, I've heard that this could be the last year of the ICT, do you know any more ?
wow! congrats Matt!
hope to see you in the England team soon, work hard...
Hi Kwun
Surprised to hear from you. Hope you are enjoying the proceedings at the Sudirman Cup in Eindhoven, Holland. Have you managed to meet up with some of our BF members, like Yong?
Anyway, enjoy yourself and hope you have a chance to play a little baddy with some of our BF folks. Sorry you'll have to do some work when you come home for we are all looking forward to reading your report.
Loh, thanks, i did enjoy watching the Sudirman Cup, it was really exciting indeed.
in one evening i stayed in a hotel that has free internet service, i couldn't resist not logging into BF so i came and posted. i sat there in the hotel lobby for near an hour at 5am (jet lag), the hotel clerks must think i am some internet addict although i am just a BF addict.. :)
i am catching up with all the BF posts i missed last week, then i am going to post the reports. stay tuned!
