flipinese_azn 03-19-2003, 09:12 PM sorry kwun...i closed the other thread accidentally by clicking the button...i was gonna add on to it...sorry >_<...ok back to the topic...
tomorrow is once again another tournament against another team...as some of u remember....the other school was the not so great...almost like playing kids, this time is the challenge something that i should be concernced about, and once again i need advice on how to capture this game...now these are some of my questions...
1.) how do i keep the opponent from pushing the girl to the back (where as my partner is exremely weak in the back)
2.) how do i motivate her to keep her on her feet, to keep her on her train of thought and not let losing get to her...even if its by 14...
3.) how do i make it so that i can force the opponents girl to the back (considering that this team is far more experienced then us)
4.) and lastly...how do we win if they return every single shot we feed em...do we work on their stamina and get them down? do we have them smash every time until they get too tired...i need some help
and once again sorry for making another thread...and help will surely be appreciated! thanks!

1. If you're playing plain front and back, your partner shoudn't even be 2 feet or more behind the service line. If you're playing rotation, and your partner's weak at the back, you should cover for her more than you would in normal rotation (ie u'd be responsible for about ~75% of the rear court instead of the usual ~50%)
2. If it's a 3 game set and you lose the first set 15-0 15-1, that's not a good sign, with 3 game sets u usually want to win the first one, or at least put up a close game to put pressure on the opponent. Morale is usually set within the first game, if not the first 9 points. I find the first 9 points of the game really critical. Motivation wise, if all else fails... show her you guys still have a chance by winning a few points. That should work :p
3. If they play rotation, put up clears to the girl when they're on side side formation. Or if you have a hard smash, smash it at the girl around chest height. If they are also playing full front-back, dont bother with pushing the girl back. Go for the 2 sides between the guy and the girl. There is only one opportunity you can push the girl back in a full front-back formation. The serve.
4. Hit it to their backhands, inbetween them, to the sides... DONT hit AT them!! :D
hope this helps

The admins did that since the thread sort of got out of hand.
flipinese_azn 03-19-2003, 09:53 PM ok...thats excellent advice...i'll be sure to remember that...thanks alot!
Just a brief touch up, when theyre on front back position and they lift it, do a dropshot to the side rectangles just behind the girl but infront of the guy. Dont do a crosscourt one though. I find this shot to be quite devastating cause it can catch both opponent off guard, the male might be thinking its a dropshot so he wont be prepared for it. The female sees it coming fast and leaves it for the guy.
There is two variations to this kind of dropshot. One is you do a slow dropshot motion and punch it with your wrist to give it the extra push it needs to go fast and back behind the girl where you want it.
And the other is you do a fast smash like motion so that the girl moves the other way to cover the cross court or crouch down to avoid getting smashed, with this one you have to place the shuttle closer to the net but still not infront of the girl and you still need to have the shuttle traveling fast.
On the motivation issue... I think I motivate my partner to play the best she can best when I don't tell her to keep trying sternly. What I do is tell her to keep trying cheerfully as if it doesnt matter if we lose. Also, if you're winning, its still important to keep cheerful and praise her all the time as if it doesnt matter even if we lose. You have to keep that coolness at all times, its part of mental toughness. If you're actually too serious about winning, both of you can be affected with over tension and it will affect your performance negatively. Btw, there's an article on mental toughness in the article section of this board, read up on it :) its good.
Well, I think I touched up a lot there :D hope you find some of it to be of help :)

Presuming that your partner agrees with your last sentence and is willing to change until she improves in that area, as Jchen touched on.....play in a basics MxD formation, which is a wedge defence whereby she is further forward and covers the X-court smash, you cover just about everything else, the only time then that your opposition could get your partner anywhere near the rearcourt is with a flick or high serve, then all she has to do is play a straight smash or drop and follow it in to the net which brings you back into the basic attacking formation.
This is just a basics answer to your question but would work.
[2.) how do i motivate her to keep her on her feet, to keep her on her train of thought and not let losing get to her...even if its by 14...
Encourage, encourage and encourage again.....No 1 rule....never criticise during play.
[3.) how do i make it so that i can force the opponents girl to the back (considering that this team is far more experienced then us)
If the girl is weaker then it's a good idea but don't get fixed on that, there's other ways of opening doors in mxdD but maybe you need more experience, if you're determined that you want to get the lady to the rearcourt and they play sides defence, obviously you can punch clear to her and play flick/high serves, play shots to bring the man into the net and if she drops back to cover then push/drive/lift to get her to the rearcourt but then what do you do if she's fast and has a great smash !!!!!!! We might read this in your next posting !! ;-)
[4.) and lastly...how do we win if they return every single shot I think if they return every single shot then the simple answer is....you're going to lose. People can say...do this or do that but if they are better than you and you don't have the answers then sometimes you have to accept that, do your best and then practice harder, a much better coach than I once said; that sport isn't only about winning but more about striving to win.
Hope you do well in your tourney....keep us posted.

1. if ur offensive game is good, try to get them first. Most of the time, try to get the opponent girl, if her return is weak, then, ur partner should be able to finish her off. If possible, ur partner should keep her shot to be as close to the net as possible, this way, kinda "ignore" the opponent's guy.
2. Mental is the tough part of the game. REally hard to tell how to stay positive all the time, while if the game is close, try to encourage her more instead of discouraging (remeber, u said she would give u some kinda of look, if she does not feel good).
3. No necessary really have to push the girl to the back. However, try to attack her weak spot. If her net game is inconsistent, u can drop her in the front, let her make error or weak return, and let ur partner kill her.
4. Here comes again. The only way they can return everyshot, is either ur offensive game is not good enough (bad strategy, way worse skill, etc), or their defense is too good. If possible, try to attack the "middle territory", and create some kinda confusion between the 2 "defensive specialits". Or, attack 1 of the corner, and taking one of them completely out of the game.
flipinese_azn 03-20-2003, 09:10 PM hi all...
thanks for taking ur time to helping me with all strategyies...i have taken them into mind and used them for tonights game...and i have good news...haha we won :D
first set:
15-8
second set:
15-1
and undoubtfully they were not as experienced as others said they were...they stayed in the front back formation at all times...which made our lives easier and just smashed or drop to the side lines...on the 29th is our strathmoure tournament...please tell if u r going to be attending this (note: this is in calgary) and once again thank u for helping me...its done alot :D
LazyBuddy 03-20-2003, 09:19 PM More and more clear, u 2 are simply too good for others.
Congrats!!!
Maybe u should start to give me some advice later on. :D
