If from your list I would select Heryanto Arbi for power and the ability to send the shuttle in different places from 1 spot. Mag 03-24-2003, 06:04 AM I would definitely cast my vote for Peter Rasmussen. Not today perhaps, but in his hey-days he had such incredible attacks. Just watch the WC semi against Arbi and the final against Sun Jun and you'll see what I mean. I just haven't seen anyone top that... Perfect jump smashes from the very baseline, impossible to retrieve even for one of the best "retrievers" ever -- Sun Jun... And how he varied his smashes too, just fanastic. Probably like 3 out of 5 times, when he uses his smash it results in a point. kwun 03-25-2003, 04:15 PM hm... tough one. fantastic is really hard to define. but i think a combination of effectiveness: power, angle, deception but also style: prettiness. the first 3 are not hard to achieve, but style is hard and comes more naturally. Wong Chong Han has the first 3 characters. but i think his style is too crude. Sun Jun's also, his style is very standard, as in perfect, but lacks the flare. Taufik : definitely has all the character, and his backhand side jump smahes are just...well, fantasic Dong Jiong : another top contender, a different style than most, his racket preparation is different from the "standard". Lee Hyun Il : surprising similar to Dong Jiong's. i wonder if being trained by the same coach has anything to do with it. but lack the flare and angle of Dong's smashes. Gade : nah. although effective, i don't find it smooth enough. Chen Hong : too mechanical. so i think i will vote for Dong Jiong or Taufik. |
