View Full Version : Badminton "mentioned" in US TV!
so we came back from the SC trip. janet's mom went to pick us up from the airport. while we were driving, we were talking about the tournament and janet mom's mentioned that China lost the final.
and then i was like, "huh?" how does she know about who wins? and turns out that KTSF, a local Chinese TV channel reported the result of the tournament during one of their news coverage. i was pleasantly surprised.

We have an Asian cable channel that probably shows badminton from time to time, but I don't have any idea how to find out when.
TVBi.
TVB is a HongKong channel and the "i" is the international branch of it. i heard they sometimes shows badminton in wee hours of the night. however, TVBi is a subscription only channel and one has to pay. also i heard there is a long long waiting list..

Isn't it unfortunate that badminton has so little popularity right now that fans get excited at mere mentions of it on TV? :(

man, that is a little sad, but one doesn't see Curling, or surfing very often either, so that would actually make badminton better, sort of an "exotic" sport:rolleyes:

No way Sharkboy! I see curling on TV all the time!! Maybe it is just my timing or something but if you check out your sport channels during curling season you will see it for sure.

now that I think of it, I've never seen Squash or Raquetball on TV either,

I saw racketball once a while on ESPN before.
While, tennis US player can do well, while Williams sisters even dominating right now. That's how they attract fans while bringing $$$. However, did u see any US player rank top 10 in any badminton or tabletennis event?
In China, they can broadcast a lot of badminton & tabletennis matches (even some providence matches), but tennis is relatively rare.
So, the fact is 180' away, but the theory is the same. Which one easily generate national pride and more important $$$ profit, which one ranks higher and takes more TV coverage.

I agree that a country has to do well in a sport to generate mor tv coverage.
Surfing allways on the tv and it get a bit boring after a while

speaking of tennis, i was doing my usual fruitless search for badminton on
TSN and not even finding tennis, i found instead a 3 hour coverage of a
dog pageant... what's that doing on a sports network??

Because the owners have to "walk", even sometimes "running" with the dogs during performance. :D

They are probably thinking:
Since rugby is a sport, polo is a sport.
since polo is a sport, equestrian must be a sport.
Since equestrain is a sport, dog shows must be a sport.
also... i used to walk dogs but not anymore... does that make me a retired athlete?
