View Full Version : Place to play for a day in Surrey
Hey folks
I have a conference to go to the weekend of April 11-13th in Vancouver at the Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel but I'm staying in Surrey I believe....
My gf isn't gonna like this (she's coming too) but I was wondering if there's any place I may be able to sneak into to go hit a few birds in the Surrey area?
I'm looking mainly for the Saturday night, maybe even early morning Saturday
Once I get more details on where I'm staying in Surrey, I'll post them
Thanks

Saturday - drop by Guildford Rec Center - on 152 St and 105 Ave. They have a Sat. evening drop-in from 6:15 - 8 pm. Play is quite good, even caliber on Saturday nights. ONly problem - you have to sign up mid-afternoon sometimes to ensure you get your spot reserved.
Early morning, we run the junior practice sessions, but depending on the attendance and gym use we sometimes use the gym until 12. It's hit or miss here on this one.
An idea - why don't you try the VRC on Saturday night? PeteLSD, WWC, Viver, Timeless and others could show up and play there?
Wow...signing up...I haven't done that in forever....
Is there a place where I'm not gonna feel like an outcast and have everyone ignore my presence cause I'm new to the club, even if it is just for one night???
I'll look into the VRC but I'm unsure about the Guilford....
Any other places where I don't have to go through this sign up stuff?? No place where I just show up and relax and have a few competitive games?

Guildford is not bad, just busy and sometimes there is wait list. Just a precaution since you might want to plan ahead for this center. Guldford is quite close, but most players do play plastic there.
VRC allows guests to sign-in with members. Myself, PeteLSD, Timeless and a few others could sign you in. The VRC is 30 or so minutes from Surrey - depending on which part of Surrey you are staying in. Let me know your area, I can pick you up or meet up and go together if you like. I'm in the North Surrey area.
That sounds great...I'll let you know ASAP

The Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel is in Richmond and depending on where you stay in Surrey, you could be looking at 30 minutes or more of commuting.
As for playing, as Badrad eluded to, it's better to play Sat. evening at the VRC. I will booked that Sat to play then. We can play until we drop :D

W00t! :D
Sounds like a lot of fun being planned here! :D
I'll definitely be there (VRC) to play. With this many confirming to be there, it should be no problem getting signed in.
The hotels in Richmond must be really packed for you to be staying way out in Surrey. Even staying in Burnaby could shave off 15-20min+ of commuting. But anyway, we're going to have a blast next Saturday! :D
This is great....so far we have: PeteLSD, WWC, Viver, Timeless, Badrad, Winex West Can, and myself
I expected maybe two people I could meet. Now it's a whole family of players!!!
My gf has given me the ok to play on Saturday :) But, I told her it's cause you guys are all going to bring us out to a really good Chinese Restaurant after and have some great Post badminton Grub
I'm stayin in Surrey because my gf has relatives there....so it's cheaper than staying in a hotel...
I'm gonna need to ask another favor though....
I just sold my TI-10's and don't think I'll be able to pick up another racquet before I leave...anyone have a racquet I may be able to borrow for that night???
I still have a Victor AL-9400 but I don't think it will help me to keep up with you guys.
I'll still bring it anyway :)
I want to thank all of ya for making a fellow badminton forumer welcome in a new place.
i wish i can be there! may be one of these days. :)

Txyu,
Don't worry about racquets. This would be a good opportunity for you to try out the Winex racquets ;)
Dropsmash,
Drop-in fees is $10 for the whole day and you have to supply your own feather shuttles. There are guest passes for $6.50 (in books of ten).
hehehe...Winex...I knew you were going to say that ;)
If I find one that I like, I may buy it since I'm in the market for a new one....
and since I'm new and visiting, I should be able to qualify for a 50% discount right??? :D

Hey Winex - TXYU - why don't you play for the discount? The percentage score difference will be the price TXYU pays? Let's say maybe divide by half, so if max score 15-0 - max discount is 50% (100/2)?

Hey guys,
We are talking about baddy during the day, right? Otherwise it will have to be a late night for me (10 pm onwards). Father-in-law's birthday so can't really skip out early... :(
Uh oh...
I'm hoping for later as my gf wants to shopping during the day
playin till after 10pm isn't a problem either for me....

Forget playing the day at VRC, juniors have court priority onwards through to 6p and then there are reserved 3 courts for junior high performance to 7:30p. I might suggest 8p or after. We would certainly stay late enough for WWC to get there.
As for father-in-laws, do what I did - piss the hell out of them from the start - never ever have to attend another in-law dinner again! Bwahahahahah!

It's good that you can play late. As badrad says, juniors monopolize the courts for most of the afternoon and so the adults don't show up until after 8pm. Since it's Saturday, everyone generally stays and plays as long as their legs hold up :D.

This will be a real nice group showing. I'll try to convince mrs. badrad to come as well, although she usually has to work early on Sunday.
What time do we all want to meet around there? 15-love - since you've already met txyu in previous tournaments will you be there to greet him, then we'll all find each other as we settle in. 8pm shouldn't be too busy in the club so should be fairly easy to id each other. I think it gets a bit crowded around 9:30 onwards.
I still need to find out where I'm staying....and then I will also need to find my way there....so, once I get my info, i'll post it...otherwise I'm gonna be one very lost badminton player...

:D Surrey is fairly large city, but if you get access onto any of the main highways (#1, 91 or 99), they will lead you into Vancouver straightforward. Any of us here can offer directions to get to the club, once we get your rough whereabouts.

Whatever time works for everyone is fine with me. However, I too suggest we try to start as close to 8PM as possible. It really does get quite busy around 9:30PM, and with this many people coming out on top of the Saturday night regulars, it might be a mad house :D.

Oh I forgot to mention - the vrc does have a dress code.
TXYU - since you are a guest from Kelowna, you will need to wear appropriate gym wear. For identification purposes our club dress code colours require all out of town guests to wear:
1. non-marking court shoes
2. orange only collared shirts
3. green only shorts
4. blue knee-high socks - although white with red stripes is acceptable
5. warm up track suits MUST be blue 70's style nylon Adidas
All the VRC club members - 15-love, timeless, pete_lsd, marky et-al can vouch for this. It is under club rule 5375-63.
TXYU - wearing the above will allow us club members to spot you immediately.
I thought telling you guys I was Chinese would be good enough :D
Here's the info
They live on 30A Avenue 16800 block Surrey

168 St. + 30 Ave is into the white rock/south surrey area. Your best route is just get onto HWY 99 and drive north until you reach Vancouver. From White Rock you are roughly 40-45 minutes from the club, so it's a bit of a long drive.
WWC should be able to give you directions if you are travelling that route, since it passes through Richmond along the way.
Maybe I could meet up with Winex in Richmond and follow him

BTW - make sure you get onto HWY 99 - and not HWY 99A (which becomes King George Hwy and cuts through the center of Surrey). I remember at one of the junctions into White Rock the two hwys 99 and 99A exits are side by side, so just be aware.

WOW~ What a night! :D
4~5 hours of non-stop BF.COM badminton! As badrad already mentioned it was a great turnout. And it wasn't a very busy Saturday night at the club so there was only a few minutes of rest between games at most. By the end of the night we were practically begging eachother to go out and play :D. It was really nice to meet some new BF.COM members such as Txyu and Viver. My games with the BF.COM members were incredibly fun and challenging. The level of intensity of every game was high yet an air of fun over it all. The wealth of skill and experience between some of these members is awesome. After last night, I have a lot to ponder and analyse in my quest to improve. I was personally faced with in-game situations and overall pace that I certainly do not face in my normal games. It was a great educational night and just overall a ton of fun. A bunch of us topped the evening off with a late night snack. We ate and chatted until the restaurant kicked us out at 2AM. We definitely need to do this kind of thing more often! :D

TXYu and Timeless and very good players. TXYu got an aweseome smash. Timeless is very humble here - he possess a very good smash with good power and moves very quickly around the court and fast at the net. Even had a singles game with Frank - my first in x years. It was a very good night of badminton for me as haven't played like this for long. Looking forward for the next gathering. :D
Today all my body muscles are aching. Don't know how long it'll take me to recover!!:(
If there was any reason I could come up with as to why I play badminton, Saturday night at the VRC would be it. Although I had never met anyone there, it was like we knew eachother for years and years.
You guys killed me. I am soooooo sore it's not funny. It hurts to try and sit down and don't even get me started about getting back up.
5 hours of badminton. I was going in thinking I was gonna play 2-3 tops. Well worth it though. I will have to try and do this more often.
Everyone held their own last night and the level of play was fantastic. Definitely no easy games. Although Badrad always seemed so nonchalant on court. Hits everything effortlessly. :D
Winex, thanks for letting me try the demos. Winex racquets are great!!! I even bought one...but alas, no discount...next time right Winex? ;)
As for my great smack....a good racquet and a few freebies at the net can make anyone look good.
And just to note, for some reason, this weekend was unique. I believe that the people that showed up at the VRC usually don't even play there. It was only because their gym was being occupied by something else that brought them to the VRC. Talk about the right time, at the right place.
Till we meet again everyone.

I think MVP of the night definitely goes to the GF for having such amazing zen-like patience.:cool::cool:
LOL My gf loves it....she harasses me about it all the time. She expects me to be bed ridden after tournaments and long bouts of badminton. She thinks it's funny.
She still makes me do everything myself though and just sits there and laughs while I crawl up the stairs.
I'd give her MVP as well for sitting through 5hrs of baddy and still have energy to want to stay up and go out to eat afterwards.
Next time we come up, I'll have her well trained and she'll be the one with the huge smash.

"If" we go, we will be coming down Saturday, attending the conference during the day, doin some shoppin in the afternoon and then playin some baddy at night and then leave Sunday.
I will find out today if I can get the time off.
You guys have 1 1/2 weeks to train before I come down :D
Geez what time would you have to leave in order to arrive in time for the conference on the same day?? Isn't it a really long drive?
If you can't stay at the same place you stayed last time then let me know, I might be able to suggest a "relatively cheap hotel" closer to the club, conference, etc.
1 1/2 weeks! I'd say that's about 4 years too short for me! ;) *LOL*
It's not that far....4hrs 1/2 about given that we have good weather.
We leave early Saturday, since the Conference is from 11-5pm...
we aren't going for the whole thing so it's all good...
Itinerary:
Leave 8am
Arrive 12:30-1pm
Visit the conference 1:30-3pm
Go shopping 3pm-6pm
Go eat 6pm-7pm
Play badminton All night
Leave Sunday
Whatever we don't see on Saturday at the conference, we can see Sunday.
Lotsa time :D
I'll let you know 'bout the hotel.

Timeless, you got some racquet skills too that I'd like to steal from ya :) for a backhand technique -
1. get a number of students.
2. line them up side by side, facing away from you.
3. if you are right handed, go from left to right, and firmly and quickly place the back of your racquet hand onto the side of the head of each student. a proper sound will be a crisp pop followed immediately by an "ouch".
4. repeat and enjoy.
5. after several months of doing this exercise, your backhand will become sufficient strong enough to try with a racquet!
6. by this time you may need to replace the students. fresh student supplies can be ample depending on the school district.
btw: for left handed players do the mirror... like - duh!

Tomorrow morning, bright and early, catch your boss in his office. Close the door, and leaning over his desk look him straight in the eyes and tell him you are going to Vancouver this Saturday. The reason you see is there is this real Bad Old Fellow who has called his boss a wimp! You being the ever loyal employee won't allow this sort of thing to get out of hand, and you MUST go to Vancouver to avenge the wrongs mouthed off about your elustrious boss. YOU are defending his honor...
And after he throws you out of the office, hey - drive on down and party in Vancouver!
LOL Badrad.. that's actually a pretty good idea ^^

Ooooooh that must be that new "Proportional Spectator Fee" I've been hearing about... where the fee is directly proportional to the highest skilled players you're spectating. So since the likes of badrad, txyu, and Winex West Can will be there... it would be certainly be cheaper to play instead of spectate ;) :p :D.

FYI - I had a discussion with one of the badminton directors last night, and there may be a spot check on Saturday night for unpaid guests. Not that anyone in the BF does it when they drop-in at the VRC, but last Saturday apparently was a mess, with too many "guests" taking the liberty of interpreting the Pay First - PLay Later to reverse the 'L' to PLay First - Pay Later.
Also, for those 'guests' who treat the VRC as a community center with unlimited drop-in - don't.

I have played a system where the a fee is paid on the loss of the game. At the end of the night, losers pay proportionately MORE. OK, so who would that include at VRC on Saturday.
This may be classified as an irrelevant post but I need clarification....
So I need to bring $$$ for the gf as well as myself right???

i had a dream last night (actually, i have two dreams, i will post about the other one on another thread).

Just curious since last time, you guys didn't mention it for her. Okay, here's the deal: Since you forgot to pay for her last time, there is a penalty clause which requires you pay double the rate this coming Saturday. So since last time was $10, and her share is $7.50 (the proportional rate), and this Saturdays fee of $5.00) add on that the double rate which makes it $10. So that's $17.50 you owe us - er the VRC this Saturday, payable in advance.
:o Hey guys! Beer's on TXYU's GF!

I don't know why people keep thinking/saying that about VRC. If you keep thinking that then you'll never be ready to play there. Don't you think the players at VRC are improving their skills all the time too? They aren't remaining stagnant while waiting for you to improve yours ;).
The average night is comprised of ALL levels of players from beginner to advanced. The great majority falling in the intermediate spectrum. And it's quite rare to see a court of just advanced players... it's usually mixed up in some way to even both sides out.
Seriously though, as txyu said, just come out and play dammit! :D Afterall, you'll be with your BF.com family!
BTW, I think I read in another thread that you know coach Frank Chen. He came to spectate as well last time but... RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!! He had to go change and ended up playing half the night away :D.

badrad
04-23-2003, 11:33 PM
There are discount coupons when you buy a block of ten passes. But I noticed the discount price has increased to $7 from earlier $6.50. The regular drop-in fee without a pre-purchase pass is $10.
There are a number of regular Saturday members that have bought a book of discount passes, but not sure who they are. In the past WWC signed up through a lady who has some of these passes.
When you submit your envelope for the guest fee, you either put in a $10 bill for each guest, or a pass for each guest. The passes can be purchased in the office or sometimes in the bar, but unfortunately both are closed on Saturday nights.
BTW Gryp - how old are you? Even as a guest, if you are under 19 you can be asked to leave since it is senior priority on Saturday night. Just a caution so you don't get kicked out.

I just re-checked the guest policy for the VRC;
Guest Privileges
Adult members may introduce up to four guests per month, one at a time. The same person may not be a guest more than twice in one month or 6 times in one year. Social guests may be introduced an unlimited number of times at no charge. There are no guest privileges for juniors.
Guest fee is $10.00 per person or purchase Guest Passes: 2 for $16.00, 5 for $37.00, 10 for $65.00 (includes GST).
I don't know how we are going to do this. Txyu is probably okay since he has only been in once this month. As far as VRC members who are also BF regulars, we have Timeless, Badrad, WilloW & 15Love and assuming that Mrs. Timeless & Mrs. Badrad are okay with signing in guest, then we have 6 members who can sign in guests.
As for Marky and Pete LSD, I am not sure how many times they have been to the VRC this month.
So we have the following guests:
a) Myself (WWC);
b) Tyxu;
c) Gryp;
d) Dropsmash;
e) JChen99 (over 19?)

you could probably pick up a tube from WWC. You won't need too many shuttles, but you should chip some in when you are joining in a game or group. It is customary for a group of 4 players to each chip in one shuttle each at the start of the games. Often the group stays and plays more games together until the shuttles run out, at which time each players chips in evenly. At the end of the games, when you all break to play other people, often you toss the shuttle and see who it points to. Closest person gets that shuttle. makes it quite fair.
The thing worse than a guest who does not pay the drop-in fee, is that same guest mooches on shuttles too, followed closely by one who mooches shuttles and can't hit worth a crap and damages other's shuttles with their poor stroking!
Thank you badrad for the information.

haha... dat's Y i got a whole tube... actually... 2 tubes... but I already tried playing with a few today. Feather feels so much more different than playing with nylon... might need some time to get used to it tomolo especially with the speed you guys prolly play at.
Btw, I know I prolly should post this in the equipment forum, but I think this may not apply to everyone. I got a tube of silver (victor) and it says it's for practice, and I checked the tube and I found most of them aren't that well made... feathers were already flipped different sized feathers etc... so I thought I should bring something better(dun wanna seem lik a cheapass =P) so I got a tube of gold... but I dunno it's just me or wut, but some of them were worst than the silver ones...

From my experience, Victor Gold and Silver are quite similar in quality. They both wear out about as fast... the difference between them seems mostly in their weight and thus flight behaviour. You won't see a noticeable difference in shuttle life until you go up to Victor Blue, their tournament grade I think it is. And Victor Green, their top of the line(?), is even more noticeably resilient. At VRC, I've seen every grade from silver to green being used. The most common, that I've seen, being blue and green.
As long as the shuttles you bring are decent quality (last more than a few hard rallies without miss-hits) it won't matter what brand they are. As badrad says, be more concerned about miss-hitting and destroying perfectly good shuttles. Everyone miss-hits now and then but if you're a walking shuttle killer then people won't be able to AFFORD to play with you hehehe~ :D.
badrad
04-26-2003, 10:32 AM
victors were a low end attempt to stem the battle of inexpensive asian shuttles. the prices for the silver and gold were made competitive to many of the shuttles that players bring back from their shopping trips from China. It was also a brand that coaches or other dealers can sell.
Unfortunately the price matching didn't come close to the quality matching. Many of the low price shuttles from China are of acceptable play quality, while even the gold victor does not come close to matching it's own Victor Tourney (blues).
I bought some tubes of the gold and silvers when they first came out. The worse shuttles I had ever played without even considering their prices. From the local supplies, I'm quite happy with Sosan Black for day to day playing. The Green Yipu is cheaper and accceptable, but does change flight patterns after a few hits.
Serious games still call for Greens or Yonex AS50's.
BTW: there is supposed to be a new series of feather and synthetic shuttle coming out from Victor. There is a contest at the VRC for coming up with a new name for these shuttles.

you could probably pick up a tube from WWC.
Guess I should bring extra tubes of the Winex Tournament this evening ;)

Dayam~ sounds like it's going to be a full house at the club tonight! :D
Hmmm... please tell me there's a Canucks game again tonight. If not, it could be mad packed considering half of the Friday night regulars didn't show last night because of the Canucks game. They'll probably all show up tonight instead . So I hope everyone plans on staying late! :D

Erm... NO .
Hmmm... WinexWestCan is right about juniors...
Might consider sitting this one out so you don't risk not getting to play. Especially if it's really busy the other non-BF.com members might become agitated and boot you out. Although you "could" always watch but you'd still risk losing your guest fee. It's up to you.

Nice piccies. Badrad, you sure are the 'maturer' player in the group:)
No probably about the pic, as seeing i didn't show up untill like 11pm and found the BF.Com guys by accident. I had played w/ TTT before asked what he was doing at VRC and he mentioned BF.com Otherwise i wouldn't have ever found them. :)
Had lots of fun games, didn't make it home till 3am. :/ Maybe next time i can be there earlier. :)
Had quite a few games w/ TTT and Gyrp. Good times, you two gotta come out to VRC more often.
Seot
Hehe it was real fun... took me a few games to get warmed up .. but after that it was just great.. lotsa fun.. good laughs and stuff too :)

Badrad post the other pics you took when we were playing.
It was another great turn out and very fun to play everyone again. This time I got to know who was who under thier alias.
Thanks again txyu for coming, I hope you enjoyed the evening, looking forward to you next trip (next week!!:D )

TTT you said you were looking for private lesson, well if you decide to join VRC you can always come and practise with Timeless and I on Friday evenings. We normally practise for about 4 hours and we do not play any games that night. We concentrate on developing our techique and stroke play. Timeless has had lots of great advice and tips from Darryl and Badrad.
If anyone else is interested in coming plz let us know but remember you have to be a member of VRC first.

Yeah, Badrad, what with the cropped pic of just showing your eyes??? Trying to hide those bruises inflicted by Mrs. and little badrad? I gotta say that was the first time I've seen Badrad running all over the court not by choice :D
It was a great turn-out and thanks to Mr & Mrs. 15Love for helping sign the guests in and actually also getting the guest passes so that we can save a few bucks! ;)
I think we almost got the whole BC BF.com posters out with some exceptions.
Gotta say that the online personality of some of the folks are quite different than in person.

mm... thx for all those people that put up wif me, esp 15-Love and Mr. 15-Love (had to put up wif me for 3 games :p)...
um... appologies to Timeless... cuz I kinda set him up quite a few times during a one singles game :D
EVERYONE ELSE WAS SOOOOO GOOD... felt like a complete beginner there >< I ended up sleeping for like 12 hrs afterwards :p
For some reason I thought VRC was very cold... everytime I get off court I had to put my jacket back on to prevent myself from freezing over

Gotta say that the online personality of some of the folks are quite different than in person. Lot's of games around. The gym was rather busy so didn't get chance to play some of you last night.
mrs and little badrad are a strong team. last night would be a good example of "remove your partner from the equation". mrs. and little badrad are strong enough to control the game on my poor partner.
the action pixs i took unfortunately didn't come out too well in the gym. very dark and even with enhancing does not come out well. at least we have a pix of each - including my enthralling eyes!! hahahahahah!
wow...I get back home and already everyone's posted and the photos have been put up....
You guys are fast!!!
Thanks again for the great time. As busy as it was, we still managed to fit in lots and lots of games.
Everyone there, even the so called beginners had a lot of skill. It was a pleasure to play with them all.
If I end up moving to Vancouver and area, this could become a regular thing.
Although I believe Mrs. Winex wouldn't like it too much :D
Till next time everyone
Thanks again!!!!!!
Last night was like the longest "drop-in" session I ever had and I enjoyed every minute of it! Thanks txyu and timeless for giving valuable tips! To all my partners (JChen99, txyu, timeless, Seot, ...), thanks for covering when I made soo many mistakes...
haha..I was so tired that I almost fell asleep in the comfy chairs at the restaurant afterwards.....
Seot:
haha...ya...I'm looking into getting a membership at VRC...definitely worth the money.
Gryp:
u gonna join vrc?...maybe we can find some other people and join up as a group because I saw on the vrc website that if we join in a group of 5-9 people, we get 25% off the initiation fee!...(10 or more is 50% off)
WilloW:
I'm not looking for private lessons anymore because I don't have that much money to sustain it....if I do join vrc, I'll definitely come and practice with you guys. Thanks for the offer!
WilloW

TTT and Gryp
If you are conceaned about the initiation fee then you should join VRC in June because they have a special promotion on during June, July and August for $200 with no initiation fee and if you decide to stay on for the rest of the season after the offer you wont be charged the initiation fee, just the regular fee.
I'm pretty sure it works that way, can anyone confirm this?
Winex West Can
04-28-2003, 02:07 AM
Has VRC raised the fee for summer? It was $180 for the summer months (June-Aug) last year. Again, wished I could join but not being be make it out for more than once a week on a consistent basis means that I wouldn't be getting value for the fees paid. ;)
Actually I am surprised that you guys remembered who you played with/against last night (there were so many games). I think I didn't get an opportunity to play with Seot & Badrad only and only a game or two with JChen and TTT.
I think Timeless left to play with someone else after he and I clashed our racquets (thankfully, no damage inflicted) :D
badrad
04-28-2003, 02:23 AM
Sorry didn't get chance to play some of you guys. mrs. and little badrad are practicing together for ladies doubles, and we were also trying out different mix doubles combos with lefty Paul.
Besides, this'll give some of you more time to practice up before playing me... :p

Last night playing I was actually pretty amazed at how much people moved around in court... especially timeless... cuz he almost basically didnt! haha
After last night so many non-members wanna become member, but I find VRC a bit too far to drive (40 mins) to play baddy... but it's still tempting. Hope I get another chance to play there during my next semester break, hopefully by then I'll have a few more things figured out so I dun end up setting up the opponent up for smashes too often :p (appologies again for that horrible game Timeless :D)

The 2nd Vancouver BF.com meet was a success. I had a great time, and it was really nice meeting friends, and putting faces to the names of new ones. I wish you were all VRC members so we could do this more often! :D It's cool to hear some of you are seriously considering joining soon. Hmmm... I left to play with the new BF.com guests, not because we clashed hahaha~ :D. And no need to apologize, I was the one that felt bad since it was YOUR brand new demo Winex racquet I was using! Pretty tough for a 4U though, not a scratch on it. BTW, please let me know if you get the 3U version of it strung, I think the 4U may be too light for me and threw my timing off all night :( :o.

Yes VRC has raised the price from $180 to $200 for this season.
The Value in joining VRC is that you get to play whenever you want, you get to play higher skilled players more often, you can practise, there is a gym aswell and you get to meet great ppl like Timeless and Badrad. You shouldn't look at it as value in how many times you can play in a month, it is not the same as playing at a community center. Members are only allowed to bring the same guest only once a month and only 6 times in a year.....
There is a waiting list at the moment but after May 1st it wont really matter since thats when the new season starts and some members dont renew thier membership.

But I don't play at a community centre and paying $200 for 13 weeks for once a week means that I pay $15.40 per session (not including costs of shuttles). Granted that I can play for as long as I want to. Still, I will probably drop in once every so often ;)
I've pretty much decided that I'm gonna join VRC... :)
It might be my second home from now on....hehe

04-29-2003, 04:16 AM
Please - when you consider joining the VRC, you need to take into consideration that it is a lifestyle change. Once you become a member and get acquainted there will be a new wide range of options open to you to enjoy the sport. You cannot really equate it to a per-drop-in rate. If you do still keep that mentality, then really the VRC and other dedicated sport clubs really is not for you. Save your money and spend it on the community center drop-ins.
Not all members that join feel comfortable at the club. Saturday nights are generally more free ranging with more drop-ins. Newbies do often get frustrated with trying to fit in the club culture on other nights. Not all players will enjoy or take advantage of the various evening events and options for playing.
So just be sure to take that into consideration, so that you won't be disappointed and come off with a bad experience...
15Love
04-30-2003, 12:13 AM
I totally agree with Badrad. Many new members do not have good experiences at the club because they expect the same things as they would in a community drop in centre. It is generally more difficult to get games if one just drops in at the VRC on weeknights without pre-arranging the games with others.

thank me by not complaining about the vrc or getting upset with the way things work there. i can almost garantee you will feel some frustration when you first venture into the other playing times during the week.
also, you can do all club members including yourself a big favour when you join by following and helping to enforce the rules. the rules are designed to ensure club members have a safe and equal environment to play in. it's YOUR club.
