I dropped by there around the March Break. I found nobody & things were not quite in shape. Are you sure it is all setfor business now?

passmore

Why did you just drop-by and won't come in?

It is ready for playing , but not for "business" as you said.

That's why the rate is extremely low now: $5 flat for drop-ins and $10 for court booking!

Once all set the rate will be $5 for 2 hours drop-ins and $14 for a court booking.

When will the rubber mats by installed for the balance of the courts?
As for lighting, will you change all to white light instead of white halogen in the middle and regular"yellow" bulbs at the sides?
Overall, It's a good setup with high ceiling and generous spacing between courts.
Good pricing, at least for now.

I drop by yesterday and went in to take a look at the place...
One of the court was being used, and ppl were playing, but for the rest of the place
it look very messy and need some cleaning up to be done...

Doesn't seem like is ready to be open for business....

When I went during march break. there was only one court with rubber mats. the remaining were all wood. one court was for single only. Also the ones beside the garage doors. The net were pretty low and cannot be adjusted as it is hung on the garage door and wood stick are used to hold the other side of the net. Also the net was bending to one side of the court. I hope it is going to improve as I find it pretty rudimentary right now. I prefer paying the same and playing in a school gym.

Your observation is fine, but not in-detail.

3 Double courts to 7 garage doors (they are dock doors) have more than 6 feet clearance

There are 2 single courts

7 brand new nets are coming

rubber mats are coming.

player are coming.

Last weekend there was fully occupied.........

Some pictures will be nice - for those who can't travel so far "just to check it out".

Doesn't matter if it's not ready for business either - just an idea as to what we will be seeing if we decide to go try it out.

We look after your knees. So 3 layers floor can secure them-------foam, soft wooden board sub-floor and mat on top

It never looks well, but everybody feels well during playing and afterwards.

Imagine mat on concrete , it's not us. hard wood floor, it's not us. mat on foam, it's not us.

We simply have the best knee-friendly sub-floor in GTA.

Just my little review of the place

I went yesterday to play with 3 of my other friends and when I saw it, like most of you, I was like wow... this place doesn't that that great. The floors seemed a bit weird, it was cold and the more i looked around the more depressing it look. And I am sure yesterday was a holiday...so maybe thats why it was so empty :p

But when I walked in to the place, i was greeted by 3 friendly people that work there that i believe are a family? Correct me if I am wrong passmore. They were EXTREMELY nice and you can tell, they're pretty passionate about their club and badminton as a whole. for instance, there's always a person cleaning the floors on a daily basis, not after their club closes, but maybe every 30 mins or so? I don't see this in other clubs, usually they clean it when they close or you have to do it yourself. The fact that Passmore made it so much more welcoming the experience i got was much more better . I believe it is still not done renovating, so thats probably why it looks gloomy, but i can't wait for place to be fully renovated!

I noticed many people complain about how the place looks... but give them a break, they're still installing more stuff to make the place better. Although some of the stuff may look ghetto, i.e the wood posts and etc, its still the same as having those steel ones. And its true that Passmore takes care of your feet/legs, theres like 3 layers under the floor you play on and even tho the ply wood looks a bit sketchy, it still provides excellent grip.

the washrooms were nice too! like spotless clean!

So guys, please do drop by and play more! I know it may not look THAT great, but please understand they're still renovating and some of the stuff may look ghetto, but it still works! good flooring in my opinion and a high ceiling. (only thing that might bug you is the lights when you clear or lift really high. and honestly, $5 for from 8 PM till 12 AM is a really good deal!

thanks for the good experience Passmore! i'll surely be back, when I get time! :)

When you enter a badminton club, you look at ceiling, floor, lighting, background color(wall), size, court side/end clearance (spaces) and overall cleanliness.

The out-looking is the last thing to look at------you play badminton, not chose a boy/girl to marry to, right?

Somebody mentioned his club has "international" standard courts. That is not. Why? ceiling there is not high enough, clearance is not wide enough, court end to another court side, number of court is 9 instead 2, etc.

Please go to Humber College and have a look when it sets-up for Toronto Open in Jan. every year. That is what we call it an international standard court: 36 feet height, 10 feet court side clearance, dark color back-ground walls, and maximum 2 courts side by side only. The net is fastened with steels string, not nylon. The white line is 1 inch wide, not 1.5-2 inches, etc.

As a matter of fact no club can afford all of these, but they all try hard to meet the minimum requirements and set up something special to attract different group of people:

Passmore works on its multi-layer-floor and clearance for pros (15+ hours a week training time weekly); Flying Dragon works on its out-looking for beginners (once a week play to die), Granite works on its lighting for coaches (coaching 7 days a week), SB works on number of courts for funs (high-end equipped, no skills but happy), etc.

Welcome to give us more professional opinions about how to build a good club. We are listening. Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone:

I too have stopped by to play at Passmore. When I walked in there were 4 people playing already on court 1 (the one with the matt) and we were a little skeptical to play on the plywood but we did anyways. We were suprised that it felt pretty solid and very soft on the knees, ended up playing from 8 - 11:30pm

As stated by JukUx, if clearing really high on court 2/3 the light really gets in your eyes but we got used to it.

Passmore will only get better so just give it a chance.

please suggest more.

Like in this week somebody brings in new ideas about how to implement the lighting:

lights on only on both side of the poles, no lights in the end of the court and above it.

how does it effect your eyes?

One club in Shen-Zhen is equipped in this way.

JukUx
05-08-2011, 08:00 PM
you could get a mesh covering for the lights
when i lift up, it blinds me a bit as in i can't see the bird falls lower
you could try dimming the lights?

passmore

The lights are all on side of court from now on. Hi pressure vapor light keeps in its position and will not be on unless somebody requests it to be on.

Sorry IT workers ------ your eyes are damaged at screen, not in badminton court. Take a break and have some liver for dinner.

I went there last night (8:00pm-10:00pm). all mats were in place.

Just a few people, you can run drills or play games. This is what I like most!

AC was not on so a little bit humid and warm inside but it was ok.
Lights were fine.

Drop-in is still $5!

better call before going to make sure there are courts available for drop-in.

Overall a very good venue. I'll definitely go again.

Terrible place. While gaming is being play on court for those who has booked the court too many `drop-in' people just hanging/waiting around the court creating a very dangerous situation and causing interference to game play. Several occasions I almost hit and ran into these `drop-ins'.
There is no air conditioning and on hot day it is like an oven!

Dude! Take a chill pill.

This is a forum and people are just sharing their own experiences about the club. Not saying that they are right or wrong - but by sharing, we get an idea of what the place is like through the eyes of people who have gone there.

You yourself said you've never tried out the place - so please let people who have gone there share their thoughts.

If you hate Agincourt so bad, please make a new thread and rant all you want there.

Thank you.

Actually, there is a thread for Agincourt! :D
http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php/81455-Re-New-badminton-club-in-Scarborough

I've been following this thread (passmore) ever since Passmore started it, and I must say it sounds interesting. I would just like to share my opinion here: this is after all a public forum, and I appreciate that Passmore is trying to use the forum to popularise the club. Nothing wrong with that! :)

But then, Passmore must be prepared to accept criticism along with praise, and maybe not be so abrasive at times. There's nothing wrong with people asking for some pics to be posted. It saves a lot of people a lot of commute time. To deride such a request is not a smart thing to do. If a forumer shares a bad experience he has a right to. But Passmore telling the forumer to "stay at home then" or compare badminton with ice hockey is a little over the top IMO.

If a club house charges a nominal or very reasonable fee, then it is likely that you will find some sort of compromise being made in terms of facilities, and sometimes, even management of resources. I think a player should be prepared for that. On the other side, an owner should be prepared to accept some criticism without coming off as arrogant or unresponsive, and maybe act positively on any justified criticism. The correct attitude always helps reputation or business in the long run.

All my opinions. Sorry, I didn't mean to sermonize, either! No offense meant to anyone.

Stay at home then, where it is a safer place.

If you saw my wife's cooking you wouldn't say that.

In your way of thinking Ice-hockey is good and safe.

WTF are you talking about? I grew up playing hockey and I still have all my original teeth! But, what the hell does that have to do with someone stating that there are nonplayers interfering with play on a badminton court? Having these players siting within a foot of the lines is a hazzard and is a hell of alot more dangerous than hockey.

All sports are risks taking. This will offer excitement!

There's a big difference between the risks associated with playing a game and risk coming from outside factors. Colliding with someone who is intruding on the court is fckn dangerous. Are you on drugs?

Badminton offers the least risk taking opportunities.

Less then what? I haven't had any chess injuries. Besides, I thought you just said risk taking will offer excitement? Are you now saying that badminton is boring?

Telling potential customers to stay at home is a pretty stupid business strategy.

After going to Passmore about 10 times during the summer I have a few comments about the club.

The court as you enter the main entrance may be the best court. The two courts to the left of the first court are horrible. One of them is right up against the wall. If someone hit the bird to that corner you win the point because no one will risk their racquet with the high chance of breaking it. They have foam padding incase you run into the wall but you can't even play on that court.

The second of the two courts is alright, the only thing is the net is way too low. All the nets are held up with high-grade plastic tubing attached to a metal base bolted to the ground. The tubes bend to an extent and the net is lowered as a result.

One of the four other courts' rubber mats are not secure to the floor. I experienced and previously watched a player push the mat off the ground by lunging to the side, it could not withstand the force. The part of the court was raised and flopped back into place after the player took his feet off that section of the court.

The lighting is pretty bad. The ceiling lights are bright, covered with a white cloth screen. The light shines through easily but it is way too bright. Some lights are also mounted to the side of the wall above a court. While this may help that one court, if you are at another court facing the lights, it prevents you from clearly seeing the bird.

The receptionist/secretary is a nice lady. I am not sure if there are more than one but this is the one I encountered all 10 times I was there. While nice, there seems to be a huge lack of professionalism and organization. A few friends bought memberships because it was cheap, we could do drills and it got the job done. The way the lady judged if we had to pay or not was by looking at our faces. She never once checked a computer or record to see if we were actually members. One of my friends didn't even have to pay once.

Drop-in is mixed with court rentals. For the first hour that a couple friends and I went to drop-in, five of the seven courts were booked leaving the two crappiest courts that I first described free for drop-in. This was hardly enough to facilitate all the players. It was busy, humid but there was nothing you could do. Eventually the court rentals ended so the drop-in players could disperse but it was very dissapointing.

I have a few comments myself. Most people are honest and that they will pay their way and not try to cheat other people or business that are struggling. It is not a perfect facility but it is a start. If your friend likes to steal well then we know what kind of person he is. If you knew how much it costs to run the business then maybe you will understand why the facilities are they way they are. Lets be fair and reasonable to these clubs.

Jonster
09-05-2011, 01:03 AM
Who said anything about stealing? Infact you have no idea the type of person he is. I never stated whether his not paying was intentional or not. Infact we remembered after we left, this was unintentional.Regardless of the cost to running a business, there should be a certain amount of organization which is not there. The receptionist should be doing a full check to see that the player has paid before entering the court but she has not done this when we played there.Let's be fair and reasonable when judging others.

ibm88
09-05-2011, 05:33 AM
I believe the best policy for anybody is to owe up to paying first then playing. If your friend forgot to pay then he should go back and pay for the use of the courts that would be nice. The owners are very friendly and trusting lets leave it at that.

Thanks for your input
