that's quite the price range... you could get quite a variety of coaches for that price... maybe you should be a little more specific....

You can try contact Yao Ximing at Vancouver Racquets club. He was former China national team member and world doubles champion.
Good luck.

There is a waiting list to get it to the VRC,so.....unless they train people out side of the VRC (private lessons) then i don't think they'd train me

how old are you? there is only waiting list for juniors. however you could still take private lessons at vrc, or if you are a junior you could also take junior group lessons. you don't need membership for these.
group lessons link: http://www.vrc.bc.ca/badmintonjrtraining.html
private lessons: look above (my post with all the details) for phone #'s and phone them.

When I started to play badminton I learned my first steps with 2 gentlemen. They taught me a few things like strokes, footwork, tactics, etc. These 2 gentlemen even won a tournament held in China back in the 80's and held the title of world champions in their category - over 70 years old??. I really thank them for their effort in teaching me and it was also because of them that I started to love badminton.
But it can't be compared with what I've later learn from a top professional coach from China. I had to discard what I've learnt before so I could progress. My strokes, footwork, tactical thinking, everything had to change.
One have to be aware the big difference between an amateur player and a top professional player. You can't possibly compare the level of badminton in Canada with that of China. Yao Ximing was a top badminton player. He represented his country China and won top level honors at international competitions. This kind of experience is not easily obtainable. Especially that 'little' knowledge to guide one to reach the top in badminton.
If I were serious about badminton and looking for a badminton coach for improving my skills I would go to Yao Ximing. Julia Chen or Deng Xian would be good alternatives - according to my knowledge.

I have my level 2, but personally all this certification is garbage. I know a number of badminton coaches that have their level 2 and play worse than beginners (IMHO).
For you my recommendation is go to Frank Chen. He is a good player - singles oriented. I am a doubles player. He charges for training and has a regular gym he has full access to. He also has greater patience than I do.
I am only volunteering at the Guildford rec center, and at little badrad's high school
I coach large groups, and also personally I only have 5 students that I have chosen to take completley under my wing. They are dedicated and come out when I run a practice no questions asked. They compete regularly at various tournaments and nationals.
I'm not looking for high maintenance students...
I had a couple of lessons with Frank before I ran out of money to continue
yes, I think Frank Chen is good and you should definitely give it a try.
Hm...badrad, do u happen to teach Chris Lee then? if you do, then congratulations on the coaching job because he was amazing at the Nationals last week
badrad
04-24-2003, 04:20 AM
No, my friend coaches Chris and my daughter (little badrad). Like myself, he doesn't charge for his services, and he only will train those he want to. As far as I know he is only working on 4 students as well.

Jeez, I hoped that you guys realized that I was kidding about the level 10 of 12, eh?
There is only four levels in the coaching (in Canada). As for what level Frank Chen is at, I don't know and I don't think it matters as Badrad has previously posted. It's the person ability to coach and impart the necessary knowledge to the student.
The first time that I played singles with Frank, I only managed to get a point off him and he wasn't even trying :D :D
Only thing is Frank coaches in Richmond so you will have to factor in the transportation (i.e. can you get down to the church gym easily). I will see him tonight and if he is amiable, I will pass on his contact info.
BTW, SmashingBird took lessons from Frank so can give you a better assessment of how well he coaches.

man..i thought that was for real man..coz i remember frank said he was level 2 or 3 or sumting like that..but when i heard u say out of 12.... i was like.... then there must be coaches that r like 3 or 4 times better than frank?!?.... haha....
newayz..i fink frank is a very patience coach, no pressure , not strict, but u will slowly see improvement in your game after a while, juss even by watching him play or how he plays, u will be able to improve.newayz... if u want more info contact me via icq 47806167 or email msn or wutever..supersayiamekpiccogetalo@hotmail.com

which coach u choose is up to u...but definitely not both...if u go under ximing yao, frank will not teach u no matter how much u pay..n i would think yao wont like his students to be coach by two different coaches either...

i don't know where i can reach Frank Chen
"The first time that I played singles with Frank, I only managed to get a point off him and he wasn't even trying"
Lucky I didn't take up his offer to play some singles....I think he might have wanted some revenge for me and Badrad beating him in doubles :D
Maybe if he's there this Saturday, I'll play him...but only if I beat him first in doubles ;)
SmashingBird
04-24-2003, 07:26 PM
yeah..frank is a good singles player but i think many ppl underestimate his doubles play as well juss because he is so smart in singles.... i think his doubles is on par wif his singles...is juss that usually his partner is not as good as him so he might look weaker in doubles than singles...(eg. 5=5 , but if is (5 + 4)/2= 4.5 so thus he seems weaker)
Hehehe.. Frank is my new coach :D
Already helped me fix some problems but I gotta practice those too..
He's real fun to watch.. cuz he's so relaxed.
He teaches in mandarin.. good thing Im from Singapore.. ehehe.. but anywasy.. he's always like.. "Fang song! Fang song yi dian!"
Translation: Relax.. relax a little!
Hehe which is so true.. he whooped smashingbird and i without even trying really.. i think he was a bit too relaxed.. lol.. he didn't even smash once.. well.. didn't need to.
Anyways.. I like his teaching approach.. drills.. analyzes your play/technique/movements.. and also he encourages you to watch him as he plays in terms of his own technique and movements.. and especially strategy. Because he's so relaxed.. it's hard to tell what he's gonna hit.. quite deceptive with the relaxed approach.. :D
BTW: Frank just won the Masters for this year.. or that's what he just told me last nite :O

Maybe if he's there this Saturday, I'll play him...but only if I beat him first in doubles ;) He was partnered with Paul, who is also my doubles partner sometimes. Paul and Frank are a tough team, but Paul is actually much stronger than Frank in singles and doubles.
Frank has quick response, and TXYU and I had to get used to each others doubles play style, so they got some early points on us the first game. But just by picking up the speed and increasing our attacks, they really got very tired. I think the second game they only managed a couple points...

Hi BadRad,
I know Chris' coach quite well (he teaches my son and we sit on a committee together). If we share the same coach, I surely must know your daughter... What's her name? Does she play in the senior or junior competitive group at Vancouver Lawn?

By now I have trained with Frank Chen for 5 years. I must say, he is really an amazing coach. I went from C level to B level in only 5 years! and you can too!;) Frank's motto is always "try to wear a smile" and I do, everytime I train with him.
