Anyone heard of a new training centre with 8 mat court will be open in Toronto? Any info will be appreciated! I'm planning to take some lessons during the summer but don't know where I should started. Thx in advance!

This is the first I've heard of a new club. I'd like to add my voice to the request for information. Where did you hear of this club? Maybe that would help narrow down the search field.
I am interested in the club too.
Is it going to be a newly built facilty? Or is it going to be in a rented school?
Since it is going to be in Toronto, let's hope that it won't be as expensive as the Badminton and Racquet club...hehe....:D

i am not sure is it or not
but are you guys talking about "Parkway Athletic Club"?
I'm not sure if this news relates to the club. But the other day, I was at Yo's Sports looking a racquets and overheard Koyo's conversation to some guy about the court area. The guy had some blueprints and floor plans about a court. Then Koyo was discussing about the lighting quality and how the ideal environment should be.
You think this is related to that new club?

ditto with lee's, i'd think they'd be dead by now with that attitude, onlything is they produce real good players and i respect the players at least.
oh, who's going to UNofssa, maybe we can meet up?

too bad the new club is gonna to be open in July! I'm hoping they can open before that so I can join the new club. Otherwise, I've to stick with Lee's. By the way, is Suzanna gonna be one of the coaches there? Do you know any other coaches' name?

No. Suzanna left Lee's on march 1, 2003. uhhh, there's cherry, troy (amazingly good coach), stacey (fun, gives good tactics), and uhh jennifer

Plz post more info about this new place as soon as u guys know more!
Btw... I will be playing with someone from nanashi's school.. we'll attempt to UPSET Justin and leslie.. They really arn't that good.. very easy to beat.... once we break their legs... and their racquet arm and cut a string on their racquets... we can beat them easily i bet..... they'll maybe only get 10 points at most!

I also overheard about this club at Yo's in about mid-April. It was a chinese guy wanting to open one. I was there to check out the rackets and look for some grips. But they did talking about what zero said.

I got some new information about this club but I assume most of you know about it. But for those of you who don't...
The new club is called the Mandarin Club. It's on Steeles and Esna Park which is between Steeles and Pharmacy and Steeles and Warden. There's going to be 6 courts I believe and it opens on the first week of July.

lol, yeah, there are pics in the chinese newspaper.... i'm in them... haha.... but fortunately, you can barely see me... score!
anyway, as for coaches, there are:
Susanna (duh), a lady named Leung Fai, another lady named Yang Yu (or Yu Yang or whatever...) and a guy named Alvin (i THINK that's his name...)
oh yeah.. and assistant coaches:
Raymond Wong
Cynthia Cheng
Hin Cheng
Kevin Li
Leslie Tang
(hope i didn't forget anyone...)
i was offered the position, but i turned it down cuz i'm too good for that club.... yeah right.... i turned it down cuz i don't want to ruin their reputation... =)
i went to the place a few weeks ago... they weren't even don building the place yet... but the layout is quite nice.... high ceilings, lots of space.... hopefully they do a little something about the lightning though... kinda uneven... but with all the lights there, it might not make a difference...

I also heard of this new club and I am very interested in joining. I was wondering how much membership is and how long it will last. It seems really close to my home!!thx in advance

So exactly when is the opening day? Is it open to public? May be I go & take a look by then. I still refuse to join their membership without seeing the actual courts. I'm coming all the way from Mississauga. I want to make the trip worthwhile!

i'm not sure about the opening.... i believe however, you cannot go on the actual opening day.... i think it's reserved for people that opened the courts, friends of those ppl and a few others....
but of course, you can go anytime after....

i believe the offical opening is to be the first day of july... like i said however, i believe that day is reserved for certain guests....
if anyone wants the forms for team training and summer camps, just ask me and i can scan them to you..
Like I said, the club is not even ready to open yet! Why would people give away a few hundred bucks to someone who don't even know if there is really a club! Too bad the opening is not for the public, otherwise I'd have make a trip to go there since it's on July 1. Thanks for the info, Nanashi! Btw, are you one of the regular member there? Why did you turn down to be one of the coach assistant? Where are you playing now? There's isn't really a decent club here in Mississauga, that's why I'm looking a club with nice mat & high ceiling. I'm really looking forward to this club. I hope it's not going to disappoint me like those warehouse since this club is associates with Mandarin Golf & Country Club!

c: the pay isn't particularly fantastic... (however, it is better than what lee's pays, lol)

Is the mandarin club just another extension of Lee's badminton? I saw jennifer lee as well as May there. Very similar set up to that off lee's badminton club.

no, the mandarin baddy club is an independent badminton club backed by the mandarin golf club....
it IS open today... i should know, since i was there from 10:30-6....
and honestly, i can quite frankly say these are some of the finest (if not THE finest) courts i have every played on....
-the ceiling is FREAKING high... if you hit the ceiling, you are hitting it too high....
-the ground is TOP-NOTCH... if you liked lees, you'll love mandarin
-there are NO obstructions near or on court... no poles or anything nearby
-there is plenty of space for people to walk by
-the walls are very badminton friendly, you have to be blind to not see the bird
perhaps my only complaint is that on one side of a specific court, the lights can blind you slightly....
other than that... a SUPER atmosphere to play badminton...
oh yeah, there's also a lounge, which is pretty nice... lots of seating, lots of space and 2 TVs...
as for the work out area, kinda small, but they haven't gotten all their equipment yet i believe....
pro shop - not bad... average selection of rackets, nice selection of birds... an on site stringer (duh), food, snacks, drinks
all in all a first rate club.. if you can get there, i TOTALLY recommend it....
if you got any questions, feel free to ask me...
the only other downside is the lounge doesn't have A/C hooked up yet... =(

Nanashi,
You sound like you are so good in badminton. Susanna offering you to become a assistant coach there and you refuse to do it. However, I was informed by someone at lee's that you used to be on their team. And the reason that you left was because Troy KICKED you out of the team. From what I heard was that he said you have NO HOPE in badminton. THERE NO WAY FOR YOU TO IMPROVE IN ANYWAY!! So he gave up on u. My friend told me that troy has never kicked anyone off the team b4, if he did that to you, then I guess you really ain't that good. Do you want to verify with what I just said?? Is it true?? If it is, then there's no way you can or be offered to become an assistant coach at the new club. Looking forward to what you would respond to this.
Excel no offence you're being kind of rude and i doubt Troy Chandra would do that. He comes from a badminton background so i wuoldn't base anything on hearsay. Besides it's irrelevant. Nanashi has been nothing but curtious in this forum so why start something. In anycase try to just chill :)

Excel,
I have no idea why u start something like this.
It's true, I don't know the whole "story" or any relationship between ur 2 and the entire group over there. However, from what I read in the thread, Nanashi basically just provide some useful info for club members. I really don't think there's anything wrong with it.
To me, providing info or being offered (or not) sort of assistant job has nothing to do with skill level or what so ever. It's just a matter of willing to help others or not, but not as a "show off" basis.
Plus, a lot of stuff u talked about are extremely personal issues. I really don't think it's proper to discuss such things in public. I don't think he really need to report / explain anything to anyone of us, regardless whether his skill level.
Please don't start a "war" just on rumors, or under some "temper". So far, this thread is informative for a lot of members, I don't want to see it's been shut down, just for some non-sense.

Excel = Jenn Lee or one of her minions? If so it all makes sense... ROFL
Don't hate Nanashi just because he was offered a job that you really wanted (but could not get... might I add).
"If it is, then there's no way you can or be offered to become an assistant coach at the new club. "
IF IN THE CASE, that Nanashi has been kicked off the Lee's team by TROY which he probably didn't... but i'll let him reply to that. WHY WOULD HE NOT be able to become an assistant coach? IF you are implying that IF he was kicked off Lee's team.. he's probably not skilled enough, then why would susanna get him to assistant coach in the first place. IF he wasn't to the level of Lee's team and got kicked off then what makes you think he couldn't of improved? Or else why would susanna ask him to become an assistant coach and risk ruining the reputation of the Mandarin club.
What am I trying to get at here? Don't get your nose in other people's business and make accusations based on rumors.... instead spend that time on training for badminton. If you do that the chance of YOU being offered a job as assistant coach will be a bit greater. Still don't get my drift? M.Y.O.B
And might I add. Who the hell are you? Don't try to act so tough just because you're hiding behind a screen name.
BTW - Why am i replying to this? Because I have nothing better else to do.... And would just like to add Nanashi can be a pretty good coach.. based on what i've seen. =)

1) i don't understand how someone can "sound" good in badminton.... you can only judge a player by well... how he/she plays...and i don't believe i've ever said anything along the lines of "i am god, i can own anyone"... in fact, i believe i've constantly told everyone that i am not a good player
2) i did not refuse the job because i thought i am above it... hell, raymond wong is an assistant coach and he can own me with his left hand.... i refused because:
a) i am volunteering this summer
b) i am learning 3 courses this summer (algeo, chem and bio)
c) i have a part time job
d) whatever spare time i have that i'm not doing the above 3, i would like some time to myself or to hang out with friends...
3) yes i was on their team
4) was i kicked off? i really have no idea.... i left after one month because of conflict with my schedule, so if i was kicked off, whatever, i don't care...
5) if there is no way for me to improve, then that's pretty sad for the other... uh... 100 sumthing ppl on the U19 list, seeing as how they can't beat someone "that can't improve" when i was apparently told this over a year ago... and like i've always said i really "ain't" that good...
6) since when did you have to be a good player to be a good coach?
7) would you like written confirmation that i was offered this position?? how about we make it interesting? if i can prove that i was offered the job, you give me $500 if you're such a disbeliever?

Nanishi,
To be honest, i didn't really mean to put u down or something. I just want to hear what you would respond to such thing that a friend of mine told me. I also went to the Mandarin club to play, I thought it would be a lot better than this though, taking into the consideration that they are backed up by a wealthy golf club. I was expecting something like Granite or at least B&R style. Of course, with the mats aswells.

Excel,
My suggestion is, for "unconfirmed" information like that, if u really want to know, better using email or PM next time. From ur previous post, I feel the wording were very offensive / rude. Also, I think "personal issues" should not be dicussed in public without permission.
So, seems u just want to find the "truth" and not on purpose against any individual? What about a polite apology, and let's have a friendly "hand shake" and back to the real info only topics?

wow, hoong and han are on the team now? interesting.....
anyway, susanna asked me to join the team (she's practically forcing me) but we'll see...
My friend says I can join the team if I go try out, but decided not to since I'm not rich!
Therefore, I have made my own team! Whoever wants to join just PM me...:D
Although we have no place to play, but it's free to join...:p
The requirements to join the team are that you must KNOW how to play and own your own racquet.....:o

Well, susanna forces people to join many things. i.e. that "intensive" training camp that I have to go to...

This thread is losing direction.
How many players in this forum is now part of the Mandarin Club? I'm interested in joining however i don't want to join without knowing anyone and without having anyone to play or train with. I'd like to do some extensive training if there's a player that is or will be a member at the mandarin club please let me know.
Cheers,
Nick

Hmm... for the price we pay for membership, methinks they should have
proper changerooms. Right now there are none. It IS a club after all...
They're washroom is the changeroom, except no lockers or benches....hahaha
But they have showers!

Actually, there is a bench, and even a big mirror too. Well, for the ladies that is...

You're right... I was just there today and to my pleasant surprise, there
was a bench and a row of clothes hooks in the men's room! There was
a sign that said 'Wet Paint' so I figured that they were put in very
recently. They weren't there Fri last week when I was last there. Thanks
for the update though. :)
Sorry to disappoint Cheung about the hen party business. :D

wet paint was in reference to the wet paint around the showers.......the benches have been in since at least sat so.......

the bench was blocking off the shower area, where the wet paint was....cuz if anyone tried to shower, it would have made a mess as well as have made the coat of paint useless :D anywyas when do you usually play ive been trying to figure out whos who ....figured out like nanashi, reaper, jus_nthergirl etc..but...you?...confusesd

I haven't decided on regular days yet. I usually show up once or twice per
week on weekdays after 8pm. I normally go to George Brown on Sundays
but it's closing for a month starting next week, then my membership there
will be expiring shortly after that so I might go to Mandarin on weekends
more often. I'm the guy with the dark green Gosen racquet bag. Stop by
and say hi sometime. :)

Yah, unfortunately I have to be at the office during the day. Gotta earn money
for racquets, feather birdies and club memberships, you know ;) :D. Maybe I
can make some extra cash on the side playing cards too if you'll teach me
(j/k). Perhaps we'll run into each other on a weekend sometime.

About 6 courts. A small lounge and a cashier area with a small change room. But Mandarin runs differently, hard to explain, they have a dedicated clientele. In addition, you have to contemplate going "member" heavy, or focus on training your club team. If you decide to go the latter route, you need some talent. Mandarin had some people defect from other clubs to jump start their talent pool so it depends. Actually, there are several successful recreational clubs in Toronto which run a different business strategy. I would suggest going the route you are most comfortable with.
