Talking about what's right/wrong with badminton sponsorships

Talking about what's right/wrong with badminton sponsorships...
We need to be thinking for our players. It's the players who make our sport, not the manufacturers of Badminton goods nor the sponsorships.

The BAM has a very strong position re independent players. Its president even said that independents, specifically the Hashim brothers who at one time were independents, were selfish and depriving the backup and other junior players of their opportunities.

Well, I believe that's not INA position with regards to independent players. In fact, its the opposite situation, if Vita Marissa, Hendra A. G./Alvent Yulianto, Taufik Hidayat, Candra Wijaya, Flandy Limpele, and Joko Riyadi do not go independent, young and promising players will not even have the opportunities to be called up to the national team, let alone being sent into overseas tourneys (for non-Djarum players).

BAM did not understand the concept of 'opportunity cost' before. This year BAM proved they finally did by not wasting any more SS on HH.

Well, BAM wanted to look like it takes care of the players, living in hope sometimes that players not performing can be 'coached back to health'.However, it does not work if the players don't want to be coached back to health.

Of course, it eventually becomes a pressure on BAM to change because it is not working. HH was very lucky to have the support, he was definitely carried for a long time.

TH should have been an independent pro long ago. He's wasted enough opportunities which should have gone to Simon Santoso and other strong young INA MS needing international competitive exposure to become champions.Constant conflicts with the INA bosses also wasted his energy and focus and this showed in his unpredictable performance.
TH can only do better and not worse as an independent pro because:
    1) He is using his own money so he has the maximum motivation to win in order to net a profit from his tournaments. He cannot treat them as paid holidays and adventures anymore.Besides,he has to pay his coach. So he has a minimum overhead whether he plays or not.2009 should be a great year because TH is likely to play the maximum no of tournaments. His fitness will go up through tournament participation.
    2) Another source of motivation is he has to prove to former INA bosses that they were wrong to let him go.When in National team, if he plays well, credit would go first to the bosses.Sometimes that's ok,sometimes that's the last gift he wants for them.On his own, TH ex bosses will get no credit. It will be all his and his coach. Why not 'work' for it?
    3) His endorsement deals can only last and get better when he plays better. So why not?
TH as an independent pro has to be the most motivated now because he has a lot to gain.On the other hand,he has a lot to lose if he doesn't get going. The choice is obvious.
2009 may just be the start of an incredible badminton era.

I like to see that. If he can treat it as a business like all pros, this will be a good example for others. And if he is good, I can hear $$$$$'s.

    off topic :
Only Hafiz is now with BAM, Hafiz was with Nusa Mahsuri, then BAM, most probably has to go elsewhere if his performance doesnt pick up. With current budget cuts, BAM has to take tough positions.
Roslin was with BAM, now Nusa for many years. And their twin younger brothers will join Nusa.

But for some players, going independent gives more opportunities for the players to participate in SS or tourneys of their choice. If they were still in BAM, they wouldnt have the chance. Latest example : Gan Teck chai/Tan Bin Shen, aged 26, 24, they're not in retirement age yet.:D

Back to Taufik, he has always had a rebellious streak, he'll be happy he gets to call the shots now. May be a a good thing if he trains hard & listens to his coach, haha.

Malaysia has many independent players outside the national squad. I wonder who is financing them, sending them overseas, and paying their big fat paychecks? And, how are they faring against those in the national squad in both international tournaments and domestic ones?
Can you name any independent player who has won an Olympic gold medal, a World Championship medal, a Continental Championship title? If any, what are their percentages compared with national squad players?
Independent players are players who are not part of the national team, who gets financial support outside, and who do not train with the national squad.

If independents still come back to spar with the national squad then are they really independent or just getting something they couldn't on their own have access to, without paying for it?
Could Tony Gunalan still have won the 2005 WC if he had stayed in the national squad? This is a better comparison.

The time to become independent players is untimely, and I think Taufik and others mistimed this very badly.
We are heading into a very severe finacial crisis or giant storm. Sponsors like Yonex with Japan-based manufacturing gets a double blow from its strong yen and its tumbling exports due to reduced purchasing power for high end racquets. Even non-Japanese sponsors do not know if they will survive in a year's time.
With this I believe sponsors are now tightening their belt and keeping a tight control over those they sponsor. This applies not only to badminton but to all other sports, including F1 racing.
More than a decade ago I had a good investment banker friend who had a very rich Indonesian client, a billionaire, who used to sponsor tournaments in Hong Kong. I was told that he also helped a few top Indonesian players (I think of Chinese descent) finacially. But when the Asian financial crisis hit Asia, and it hit Indonesia and Malaysia particularly severely, this sponsor just disappeared and has since not be heard of. The current crisis is more severe than the Asian crisis.
I wish Taufik the newly independent the best and hope he can be spared any adverse impact of the coming storm.

In times like now the richer you are the harder you have fallen. Many millionsires and billionaires are now paupers, some resorting to suicide. Many companies' assets are perhaps completely worthless.
In fact I will not be surprised if Yonex is heading for a massive loss this year.
